I was 9 at the time this movie came out, so you may want to call this a parent fail but things were different back in the 1980's. This movie was the scariest thing I ever saw at the time and stuck with me for years after yet Ive rewatched it time and time again. Looking back now some of the effects arent as good obviously but in the eye of a 9yr old it was disturbing. Craig T Nelson and JoBeth Williams are excellent in this as their family slowly goes crazy by the evil forces. I would have to say its a must watch for any haunted house/supernatural horror fan. Part 2 is actually pretty good although a little cheesey and definitely dont waste your time with part 3 imo.
Ive never ever written a review before but I felt like I had to after watching this movie. I guess this is what would be considered an artsy movie for the 1980's. Imbd has this listed under "supernatural horror" but it clearly has nothing to do with that for the most part. It focuses on the "horrors" of divorce and what it does to a family. Sam Neil(who is a great actor) and the female lead are actually horrible in this with both actors completely over acting to the point its almost comical(maybe thats what the director wanted). For the first hour its a confusing mess with both actors(especially the female lead) just constantly yelling to the point that I had a headache. The scenes were constantly filmed where the camera was rotating around the actors- again im sure it was done on purpose by the director but it just came out bad and cheesy. Im not a movie critic but to the average film viewer who is looking for a scary supernatural or psychological movie this is not it.
Probably the worst, most uncomfortable show I've ever watched but yet I kept coming back because I couldn't believe I was actually watching such an unbelievable disaster. Love the old Chevy but talk show host was not for him. Chevy had absolutely no idea what to do or say at any point. I remember being completely boxed back in my early 20's and coming home and watching this with my jaw down to the floor in absolute amazement. Definitely check out the episode where Goldie Hawn sings Happy Birthday to Chevy. I could feel myself sweating because I was so uncomfortable for him. So bad, so very very bad.
