It's about time someone focused on the Southern Classic Bands (half time). Millions of people faithfully support these bands because of their exceptional, explosive performances. I think the movie does a brilliant job of capturing all the power, excitement and zeal of the marching bands. If you have attended the classics, you will appreciate this movie. If you have never attended a classic, this movie can be a great introduction. The movie does an excellent job of capturing the level of competition and the desire to win. The drum line performance in this movie is awesome.
I am a big fan of Anthony Hopkins and I like Chris Rock, although I don't think of him an actor. Still, something about this movie just didn't gel and I really think it was the script. Every once in a while a movie will come out that by all appearances should be a success. Here you have Anthony Hopkins and Chris Rock, true an unlikely duo. Nevertheless, they are two people who I was excited to see together in a movie, but unfortunately, they had a disappointing script. I'm not sure if it was suppose to be comedy or an action movie, perhaps both. However, it didn't come across on either genre for me. The plot was weak, the story line lacked integrity, and it was hard for me to follow. Those things spoiled the movie for me. I was expecting something very different. Despite all of this, there was a lot of action and if you're an action movie fan, and like Chris Rocks' humor, you probably will enjoy this movie.
I listened to the critics about this movie and passed it by a number of times. I finally watched it on HBO and was very surprised. I THOUGHT THE MOVIE WAS VERY GOOD. The story is about a girl who separates from her mother at a young age and struggles to hang on to her self-esteem and dreams of redeveloping the relationship she lost with her mother. In the process of surviving, she finds stardom. This movie is not based on a dream of stardom but a dream of finding love and maintaining relationships. I felt Mariah Carey did a great job for a novice actor. I think the critics were caught up in her real life problems (which is sad for them) and trashed the movie on those bases. There is some superb acting by Terrence Howard, Da Brat, and Tia Texada. The musical score is excellent and Mariah's voice is superb. This was a movie about young people, their hopes, dreams and their never ending search to find themselves and where they fit into society. Stop looking at this movie as a dramatic episode. That is not what it is. I found it entertaining and realistic for it's intended purpose. I plan to add this movie to my collection. I have already brought the musical score. If you like movies such as: Sparkle, The Body Guard, The Temptations, and the Five Heartbeats you will enjoy this movie. It's worth seeing.
