Regina King did a phenomenal job portraying Shirley's grace and kindness. Shirley's big heart was so heartwarming. She was a strong woman, but she never let herself become hardened by disappointments or betrayals. What a remarkable woman!!
I also loved her friendships in the movie, how they supported her, and she them.
I believe Shirley did what she did because of her love for others. It wasn't about power or pride or politics for Shirley-it was all about love and standing up for people. I may not agree with all her political stances, but I admire her heart.
As a middle-aged, conservative white woman, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie!!

This movie has a beautiful message, and it will for sure make you smile and inspire you to want to get involved in helping your community, and that is awesome...
So why 6 stars? I like the movie, and I hate to give a movie with a positive message only 6 stars, but I don't want to see it again, as it had far too many loud, disturbing scenes that were painful to watch-even loud "music." I was constantly having to adjust the volume up and down. If you're needing a relaxing movie, watch this one another day.
To me, this movie lacked depth. Compare it to "Same Kind of Different as Me," which is one of my favorite "feel good" movies working with the homeless, and you'll see that the characters are not developed like they could have been, and the scenes aren't as meaningful/deep as they could have been. I do realize these two movies had different budgets, but with the 9 & 10 star reviews, being Dove Approved, and receiving a MovieGuide Award for 2023, I wanted to add some balance, as I hate for people to go in with high expectations of a truly feel-good, high quality, Hallmark style movie-this just isn't it.
I also wish it had been better explained how their non-profit suddenly became successful with all the help. It did show them creating a website, putting out signs, and speaking with their church, but suddenly they had their own van with a logo on the side, tons of donations and people helping. More specifics might help others do the same or get started. That's a small gripe and doesn't reflect my rating.
I also thought the acting was very good. The grandmother, mom and little boy were all very likable and believable in their roles.
Is the movie worth watching? Yes! But just be aware that it may not be the Hallmark style, feel-good movie you're hoping for, but there is still an inspiring message and story, and it got me to grab my phone to see what specifics my community is doing with keeping the homeless warm in my area, and that's worth a ton-worth far more than a perfect rating. I definitely applaud the efforts behind this movie and getting the word out!
