Yeah, it is impossible to get over the fact that the two "sons" look as old as Shawnee Smith.
Oh, and the plot is more like a weird ABC midseason replacement about a fake reality show about a loony small town with a charming serial killer that everyone lost track of and now he's back to catch up with friends and family.
Taryn Manning is like a living Rugrats character. The cops are as stupid as that and the plot.
The killer's mask is comically oversized.
It's not even fun bad. Go watch Leslie Vernon instead.

Yeah, it's somewhat slow. And yes, the characters are exceedingly dumb. I mean they figured out how the killer is killing them but not who - which could be gleaned from the exact same information. And even before that, there is a massive clue who the killer is because information that only they would know is tipped to the entire group and audience.
Things the film has going for it. The killer's mask. Yep, I am a fan of that. While it is impractical, it is still a pleasing aesthetic. And some of the character studies are fun. Mona's business phone calls. The addiction subplot. The kills. The theatrical roaches. The VCR aspect. The ending.
Stuff that was meh. The owner is insufferable and his financial woes are lame. The fact that Donnie was not a long-lost Kevin James/Gary Valentine (Knipfing) brother but just some guy named Peter Story - which totally sounds made up.
Anyway, this movie is watchable. Because I apparently had already seen it, rated it, never left a review and then rewatched it, thinking this seems familiar.

It's like if Jules et Jim met the Fly.
I think the best part is the one brother. The brunet one. Not the other one. The one that is not engaged to Catwoman but that has had a history with her. And that is what I like about this movie is the sibling part. It is blended rather well with the lab stuff and goes a long way in explaining the motivations of the one guy who does the things that cost tension.
The effects are pretty good too for the 1950's.
The only thing that can be maddening about this movie is the incessantly upbeat bebop jazz score that plays during every scene whether it is comical, nerdy, dramatic, what have you. Sometimes I would have rather have had silence than Dizzy Gillepsie blaring away just off screen.
Otherwise this movie is good fun.
