Few films seem to effectively handle spiritual matters without seeming preachy or muddled. This gem emerges as an easy paced story of sacrifice and service, replete with appropriate Christ symbolism (wine/ blood, Last Supper etc.). The production is plain, and acting is very quiet. But these people are real, though how often do we take an interest in people like them?
I can't help but feel that this type of film would embody the apex of truly accomplishing something significant in film-making. This film allows you to be moved rather than forcing it with all manner of tricks and unbearable sentimentality. A wonderful film for Christmas.

The film is enjoyable enough with its lush visuals and proven premise. However, where this family film falls short is with the use of the children. After an entertaining bout with the king's son and Anna's son, they children seem only token to plot points. They are simply rarely used. Jodie Foster seemed too earnest with her constant criticisms that her relationship rarely seemed convincing. The King was simply too tolerant of her obstinate intrusions. Thus any true chemistry dissipates before it has begun. Since this is where the focus of drama is centered, the film tends to feel long and uneventful. When the eventful parts do come, they are refreshing and sensitively portrayed though.
This short is a fine example of people with something crucial to say, having to bend to commercial whims of entertainment in order to hold the audience's attention span long enough to get the message across. It is remarkably witty, and runs at a fanatical pace. The jokes cause a smile, but when the holocaust clips arise, we get the clue that there are weighty matters at stake here. People need to see films like this. Remarkably effective.
