In hybrid documentary “Broken English,” which premieres in Venice Film Festival’s Out of Competition section, filmmakers Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth deliver an innovative and playful portrait of the singer-songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull. Variety debuts a first-look clip from the film, and speaks to the directors, who were BAFTA nominated for their Sundance award-winning “20,000 Days on Earth.”

The directors took inspiration for the film from Samuel Beckett’s play “Krapp’s Last Tape,” in which an old man sifts through recordings of his younger self. Pollard tells Variety, “We have, for a long time, had a bit of a yearning to make a portrait of somebody near the end of their life, looking all the way back. While all timers like One Piece have performed great, other newer series have also made it to the list. On the other hand, anime like Bleach, Dragon Ball, or even Naruto have not made it to the top ranks.

A-1 Pictures, the animation studio behind Solo Leveling, has reported a significant financial downturn. The company recorded its largest net loss in a decade for the fiscal year ending in March 2025, despite the global popularity of the anime, among others under its belt.

A-1 Pictures' latest financial results were made public in Japan's Official Gazette on June 30, 2025, as reported by Gamebiz, revealing a net loss of 178 million yen (approximately US$1.1 million). In contrast, the studio posted a net profit of 24 million yen in the previous fiscal year ending in March 2024. This is the most significant loss the Aniplex subsidiary has faced in the last 10 years -- a period during which the studio consistently reported profits, with the exception of a minor loss in the fiscal year ending March 2020. March 2016 was the studio’s most profitable year, when it reported a profit of around 350 million yen.

Immortal characters are thus less like characters and more like plot devices.

Yuto Tsukuda, the creator of Weekly Shonen Jump's hit culinary comedyFood Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, recently promoted an up-and-coming fellow Shonen Jump IP. The manga in question is Shinobi Undercover, a zany action-comedy revolving around a ninja and a high school girl.

Tsukuda's new recommendation was shared by @WSJmanga, an unofficial Shonen Jump news hub on X (formerly Twitter). Shinobi Undercover, which was created by Ippon Takegushi (story) and Santa Mitarashi (art), revolves around a ninja named Todaka who lives and works in modern-day Japan. One day, he is ordered to protect a cheerful but klutzy high school student named Aoi. In order to be a proper guard, he masquerades as Aoi's fellow classmate. According to the X post, Tsukuda is particularly fond of the "moe" (cute and/or innocent) attributes of the lead character.

However, one thing worse than an excellent series never getting a follow-up is a poorly executed sequel that leaves fans disheartened and disappointed. Failing to live up to their predecessor’s greatness, the worst anime sequels, at times, are nothing but a letdown, featuring none of the virtues that made fans fall in love with the original. The upcoming anime based on Yūshi Ukai and Nekometal’s Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table light novel series revealed its main staff and a 2026 release window. Fans also got a look at the character design for Yuuki, who’s seen wearing a maid outfit.

The anime will be directed by Takehiro Ueno, known for Days With My Stepsister, with Studio Deen handling the production. The script will be written by Rintarou Ikeda, who worked on The Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon’s Judgement. Eri Osada will design the characters, and Noriyoshi Konuma will oversee the sound direction.

Yen Press has licensed the light novel series and is releasing its third volume on February 18. The story follows Yuuki, who wakes up in a strange manor wearing a maid’s uniform.

She soon meets five other girls in the same outfit, and together they learn that the mansion is filled with dangerous traps and weapons.

Via Ann, Chalkbeat reported this week that Rutherford County district has instructed its librarians to remove over 150 books from schools pending an investigation about whether they violate Tennessee's Hb 843. Hb 843 mandates that books in school libraries "must be suitable for the age and maturity levels of the students." It would ban books that contain "whole or in part nudity, descriptions or depictions of sexual excitement, sexual conduct, excess violence, or sadomasochistic abuse," are "patently offensive" or "appeal to the prurient interest" for students in kindergarten through K-12. The books currently banned while under review largely span LGBTQ+ topics, books featuring drugs, sex and violence, graphic novels, and action and Bl manga. The Tower of God anime debuted in 2020 as one of the first Webtoon original anime series and quickly garnered praise from the anime community for its stunning visuals and animation. While nothing particular stands out from season one, the animation itself was crisp and the pacing for fights was tight, given the broad number of character abilities and flashy set pieces that were featured in the anime's first season.

The same cannot be said about the shonen's second season, however. Season 2 of Tower of God started out fine, but as the episodes progressed, the quality of each episode's animation and visuals fell to such a degree that most major fight sequences or moments of quick action have been ruined, which makes the overall viewing experience unwatchable at times, even immersion breaking.
