Synopsis

  • Peter (Levi Miller) is a young boy who is left as a baby on the steps of an orphanage with a mysterious pan flute pendant in London by his mother Mary (Amanda Seyfried), an establishment under the care of Mother Barnabas (Kathy Burke). The Orphanage is called the Lambeth Home for Boys at Kensington Gardens. Before leaving Mary puts a letter with baby Peter. Mother Barnabas is not cruel but runs a tight ship and uses the boys to perform chores across the orphanage and gives them very little food in exchange.

Several years later, during World War II, upon learning that she is hoarding food for herself, Peter and his best friend Nibs (Lewis MacDougall) try to steal it to distribute among themselves and the other orphans. They reckon that the food is kept in Mother Barnabas' office as nobody has ever been there and go there after nighttime. In the office, they find a ship inside a bottle. Barnabas realizes that Peter is missing at the evening roll call, which was done due to the sudden air raid siren going off. The boys find a basement in her office and find a treasure trove of food and the records of all the orphans.

In the process of going through the files, Nibs finds Peter's file. In the file, Peter finds a letter written by his mother, declaring her love and assuring Peter they will meet again "in this world or another". Peter has dyslexia and hence could not read the letter himself and asks Nibs to read it for him.

In retaliation for the boys' mischief, Mother Barnabas summons pirates who kidnap Nibs and several others. Nibs managed to jump off the pirate ship and escape, but Peter did not. Following an aerial battle with several Spitfires, the ship reaches Neverland. Neverland is a magical realm beyond space and time, where Peter is forced to become a slave laborer and mine for fairy dust on behalf of the ruthless pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) who uses it to keep himself young. Peter befriends another miner, James Hook (Garrett Hedlund). After insulting Blackbeard's men, Peter is forced to walk the plank but survives by flying above the water. Blackbeard then confides with him about an old prophecy that a boy who could fly would one day kill him, but Peter refuses to believe he is the said boy.

Peter joins Hook and his accomplice, Sam "Smee" Smiegel (Adeel Akhtar), stealing one of Blackbeard's flying ships and escaping into the forest, where they are found and nearly executed by the natives led by Chief Great Little Panther (Jack Charles), before his daughter, Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara), notices Peter's pan flute pendant, left to him by Mary, and said to belong to their people's greatest hero, the legendary Pan.

Tiger Lily reveals Blackbeard had waged war upon the native lands in search of Pixum, crystallized Fairy Dust. That's when the then chief made a pact with the fairies to unite against Blackbeard. Peter's father was the Fairy Prince, who flew to Blackbeard's ship & fell in love with Mary, who was the love of Blackbeard's life. Blackbeard discovered them, so the prince took human form to rescue Mary.

The prince could only live for one day in his human form, so he sacrificed his life to save Mary. Mary had to abandon Peter (as he was not safe in shadow of Blackbeard's wrath) and seek shelter in the Fairy Kingdom. Before he was sent to the orphanage, he was given the flute pendant, so that he could be recognized, if he ever returned. As part of his heritage as a half-fairy, Peter has the ability to fly but is unable to do so because of his lack of faith. Tiger Lily also lies to Peter by telling him his mother is alive so that he stays in Neverland.

Tiger Lily says that as Blackbeard was winning the war, the fairies retreated to a hidden location on the island, so that they could fight another day. Tiger Lily says that Mary is in that location. Fearful of Blackbeard's punishment, Smee betrays the natives' location to him, and in the ensuing battle, Chief Great Little Panther is murdered by Blackbeard, who also reveals he killed Peter's mother. Peter is hurt to learn that Tiger Lily lied to him that his mother was still alive, but she explains that he would have walked away from his destiny if he knew the truth.

Peter, Hook, and Tiger Lily escape in a raft and head to the Fairy Kingdom to enlist their help in defeating the pirates. Along the way, Peter falls into the river and is nearly eaten by a crocodile before being rescued by the mermaids, after which he has a vision of Blackbeard accidentally killing Mary as she defended the Fairy Kingdom from his offensive, revealing she was a great warrior who trained Tiger Lily herself.

Hook leaves on an abandoned ship to find home while Peter and Tiger Lily arrive at the Fairy Kingdom, only to be ambushed by Blackbeard. Planning to use the fairies' vast amount of Pixum to live forever, Blackbeard takes Peter's pendant, the key to the Fairy Kingdom, and opens their gates, launching an attack.

Peter escapes and befriends one of the fairies, Tinker Bell. Together, they rally the fairies to fight the pirates, and are joined by Hook, who has returned and fights Blackbeard's right-hand man Bishop (Nonso Anozie) aboard the stolen ship, which tips over, sending both falling to their deaths. Peter conquers his fears and flies to save Hook, while Blackbeard and his men are overpowered by the fairies. Forced into an abyss, they subsequently fall to their deaths. Smee is the sole survivor having fled during the battle. Peter then has a vision of Mary, who reaffirms him to be Neverland's savior, Peter Pan.

Shortly afterwards, Peter and Hook, now the captain of the Jolly Roger, return to London to rescue Nibs and the other orphans, who become part of Peter's crew, the Lost Boys. Hook and Tiger Lily fall somewhat in love, and Peter and Hook reaffirm their friendship, certain nothing will ever go wrong between them.
