Popular movie franchises nowadays bear hefty price tags with confidence that they would easily churn money at the box office, but Scarlett Johansson’s Jurassic World: Rebirth did not follow suit its predecessor. The cost of making science fiction movies like this usually goes up to more than $200 million due to its extensive use of visual effects. This time, they made efforts to reduce the budget.

One of the biggest titles this year, Jurassic World: Rebirth, follows an entirely new cast and story, distancing from the Chris Pratt-led franchise that received mixed reviews.

Movies like Jurassic World: Rebirth thrive on nostalgia and the classic action-adventure scenes that fans of all ages love to watch. Setting aside the high-definition special effects, it brings back the good old memories of watching Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park back in the ‘90s.

When Saw XI was taken off of the 2025 release calendar, I immediately thought of my friend Kevin Greutert. A longtime horror movie director/editor whose career traces back all the way to the first Saw (2004), Greutert’s oeuvre is inextricably linked to one of horror’s most venerable franchises. His is the vantage point of an editor-turned-director, initially remote from the actors whose narratives he shapes and later charged with being their leader.

Yet Greutert’s career includes much more than the story of John Kramer (Tobin Bell), the so-called Jigsaw Killer, and his disciples. The lineup for the 2025 Punk in the Park Los Angeles festival has been unveiled, featuring headliners Bad Religion, Pennywise, Descendents, and The Interrupters.

The two-day fest is set for October 4th and 5th at Berth 46 at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, California, with more than 40 acts set to play across three stages (pick up tickets here).

Bad Religion and Pennywise will headline the Saturday (October 4th) bill, while Descendents and The Interrupters will top the Sunday (October 5th) lineup.

Chan of State Supreme Court in Manhattan made a crucial ruling in Warner Bros. Discovery’s favor in their protracted conflict with Paramount Global. On Tuesday, Justice Chan ruled that Paramount may have “actively convinced” South Park Digital Studios to breach their massive, half-billion-dollar streaming deal with Warner Bros., opening the door for Wbd to take some of the claims from their 2023 lawsuit to court.

Discovery won a ruling in its lawsuit against Paramount Global, MTV Entertainment, and South Park Digital Studios over the alleged breach of a $500 million licensing deal for the exclusive streaming rights of South Park. What it comes down to is Warner Bros. Discovery alleged that Paramount Global may have worked with the joint venture that produces South Park to violate the terms of the Wbd Deal, per The Hollywood Reporter.

With the summary judgment ruling issued by Justice Margaret A. Chan of the State Supreme Court in Manhattan, there is an opening for discovery as it relates to Paramount Global's understanding of the contract. Additionally, the company may have to turn over evidence such as viewership data and metrics related to subscribers and profitability. If it so wished, Warner Bros. One of South Park's many strengths is its singular voice. Since its inception, South Park has always attempted to steer its own course and not give way to the trends of any other animated TV show, like avoiding making the show about a family (which was popular with The Simpsons and King of the Hill at the time). South Park has always stuck to its lane and attempted to push the bar. The show has never changed hands in leadership, always remaining under original creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who have only committed to making the show bigger and better. That's why it almost comes as a shock that the show once entirely ripped off a College Humor sketch for dialogue in one of its episodes. As wrong as it sounds, it was an honest mistake.

Ever since its inception in 1997, South Park has made little effort to be diplomatic about its portrayal of different cultures and countries — including those of America and mid-sized-town Colorado. As the most iconoclastic comedy series in adult animation, South Park goes out of its way to create international incidents of indecency, mocking different peoples and nations across the world with each passing season. Directors Guild of America (DGA) has announced five all-male nominees for its top theatrical feature award.

Golden Globe winner Brady Corbet is nominated for The Brutalist, alongside Sean Baker, whose Anora won the Cannes Palme d’Or, Edward Berger for Conclave, Jacques Audiard for female-led Emilia Pérez, and James Mangold for A Complete Unknown.

DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter announced the nominees on Wednesday. The roster omits the female leading lights of directing this season, principally Coralie Fargeat with The Substance, and Halina Reijn for Babygirl. Also not in the running are Denis Villeneuve for Dune: Part Two, and Jon M. Chu for Wicked.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a hot-button issue in Hollywood and beyond this year. So it just made sense for the fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival (Rsiff) to put a spotlight on AI in during a Sunday panel at its market, the Red Sea Souk.

“Can AI be a creative partner?” was the title of the session held as part of another full day of activities in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The panel, moderated by Saudi businesswoman and AI expert Fatmah Baothman, featured Chris Jacquemin, partner and head of digital strategy at WME, Diana Williams, CEO and co-founder of Kinetic Energy Entertainment, and Jennifer Howell, chief creative officer at Deep Voodoo, the AI and deepfake video company of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. And it explored the opportunities and challenges of AI, how it may affect creative jobs, and how AI is currently being used in the entertainment industry.

It has been 19 long years between the first Wallace & Gromit feature in 2005 and now the second in 2024, but it is an understatement to say it was well worth the wait. Nick Park’s and Aardman’s delightful buddy movie, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is an animated film noir merged with the dangers of technology running rampant. Park created this franchise with his 1990 short, A Grand Day Out, and has been going strong with shorts and half-hour specials ever since for W & G. The first feature, Wallace & Gromit: Curse Of The Were-Rabbit was one of the earliest Oscar winners when the feature animation category was established, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see history repeat itself again this year. Ghibli Park, an amusement park in Aichi Prefecture themed after the animated films of Studio Ghibli, is commemorating its second anniversary in November 2024, with a special event entitled Ghibli Park no “ ” Sekai (“Ghibli Park's [ ] World”). The event runs from November 2 – 4 and 15 – 17, 2024. The blank space in the event's title has not yet been revealed, but the concept art and video (below) use imagery reminiscent of the 1995 film, Whisper of the Heart , which was directed by Yoshifumi Kondo. One key detail from Jurassic World Rebirth makes me want a crossover with the Halloween franchise. The upcoming movie, which stars Scarlett Johansson and is being directed by Gareth Edwards from a screenplay by David Koepp, will be the seventh installment in the long-running Jurassic Park franchise. Nicole Kidman is easily one of the most talented and beloved A-list actresses of our time, with countless accolades and a lengthy (and fascinating) filmography under her belt, it's hard to imagine that there's anything Kidman hasn't done yet. Except, apparently, there is at least one genre she hasn't had the chance to dabble in as much just yet.

During a recent profile piece for the magazine L'Officiel USA, Kidman revealed that she's a big horror fan. She specifically said that she enjoys watching "hardcore horror," even citing the Australian horror flick Talk to Me as a recent favorite of hers.

Throughout her decades in the business, Kidman has starred in plenty of dark dramas, many of them psychological, but the closest she's come to the horror genre is with thrillers like the (excellent) gothic ghost story The Others, Park Chan-wook's Stoker, and The Killing of the Sacred Deer by director Yorgos Lanthimos.
