Scott Adkins' 'Take Cover' Is a Streaming Hit on Tubi After Being Panned on Release
Image
Scott Adkins has carved himself an impressive niche as a go-to action star, landing roles in franchises such as John Wick, The Expendables, and Universal Soldier. Now, one of his most non-stop brutal movies of the last few years has found its way to the top of the Hulu Top 10. Take Cover was one of several Adkins-led movies released in 2024, and it was also one of his best reviewed of the year.

Directed by Nick McKinless, the British action movie features Alice Eve, Jack Parr, and Madalina Bellariu Ion alongside Adkins. The synopsis of the film reads:

“Scott Adkins has got no cover, no back-up, and no way out in this claustrophobic action thriller. Sam Lorde has spent a lifetime killing people. After a hit gone wrong, he finds himself disillusioned and lacking purpose, deciding to retire as a hitman. His final job however, results in him being a target himself.

‘Sunray: Fallen Soldier’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Tip Cullen, Saskia Rose, Daniel Davids, Kevin Golding, Tom Leigh, Luke Solomon, Steven Blades, Karlina Grace-Paseda | Written by James Clarke, Daniel Shepherd, Sam Seeley | Directed by James Clarke, Daniel Shepherd

Back in the 70s and 80s, films like Sunray: Fallen Soldier were a staple of action cinema. Soldiers returning from Vietnam found their neighbourhood or small town overrun by criminals and had to put their combat training to use on the home front. As is the case here, it often had a personal element, such as the family business being threatened or a child overdosing.

The latter was, and continues to be, a common theme in revenge films, even without the military aspect. Of course in these films, nobody ever suggests that maybe if the protagonist had been a better parent they wouldn’t need to be seeking revenge, but that’s another matter.

Andrew “Andy” Coleman came back...

‘Drained’ VOD Review

Stars: Ruaridh Aldington, Angela Dixon, Craig Conway, Madalina Bellarui Ion, Andrew Lyle-Pinnock, Natasha Patel, Andrew Lee Potts | Written by Peter Stylianou | Directed by Peter Stylianou, Sean Cronin

It feels like vampires and vampirism are often used as metaphors as they are as supernatural threats these days. Be it obsession, addiction or undying love, there’s a flock of fanged films that uses them to explore it. Drained, a new film from writer Peter Stylianou who co-directed it with Sean Cronin combines some of these into a story that looks at codependency and toxic relationships.

Thomas is an artist, he may not be a starving artist, but he is an unemployed one who still lives at home with his mother. He’s focused on creating a killer portfolio, but at the expense of getting any actually assignments in the here and now. It doesn’t help that his mother is also...

On Set With Scott Adkins: How Britain’s Best Action Star Keeps Kicking
Image
On a Thursday in North London, Empire finds Scott Adkins conducting a symphony of pain. The blunt thud of bodies slamming into concrete; the wheeze of one criminal henchman, as a spin kick impacts his torso; the groans of the henchmen Adkins has already cooly dispatched, writhing on the floor… these are the sounds in the action star’s orchestra. They’re echoing around the North London underpass where filming is underway on Take Cover, his latest propulsive thriller. “You alright, mate?” the 48-year-old asks one stuntman who he sent spinning through the air like a rag doll, the second director Nick McKinless calls cut. The stuntman smiles and nods, ready to go again – because of course he is. To stuntmen in the action movie-making community in Britain, receiving a blow to the windpipe from Scott Adkins is something of an honour.

With over sixty films under his black belt,...

Take Cover (2024) Movie Ending Explained: Do Snipers Like Sam Ever Truly Leave the Game Behind?
Scott Adkins
Nick McKinless’ “Take Cover” (2024) focuses on the primary outline of a sniper actioner, chucking everything about plot and character development. Those specifics don’t seem to have played into the making of the screenplay, which is largely contrived, frequently conducive to the hammy performances and frantic bouts of all-out action. There is a deception at the center of the thin narrative. It’s designed to be a key turn, a significant revelation but it lands so weak, bogged under the burden of a gimmicky exterior there’s no salvaging it or rendering it remotely plausible.

No thought or logic has gone into the crafting of the screenplay. It seems hurried and unreasonably specious, lacking in the development of the characters, and their motivations. Therefore neither of the extreme realizations nor the delineations of the stunts strike as specifically rooted and grounded in persuasive textures. McKinless inserts a heavy emotional dose...

Take Cover is yet another take on one of, if not the most used plots in film, ready for retirement the protagonist, be they a spy, thief or killer for hire, agrees to one last job only to have it all go sideways. In this case, it’s Sam Lorde who we first see on a roof along with his spotter Ken talking about God as they wait for their target to arrive.

Their target does arrive, and they get their kill, but Sam also kills a woman who seemingly throws herself in front of him trying to save him. He retreats to his cabin in the woods to deal with this, and when their boss Tamara contacts him with his next assignment he tells her it will be his last.

‘Take Cover’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Is Tamara Dead Or Alive?
Image
Stuntman-turned-director Nick McKinless’ debut feature film Take Cover is centered around ace sniper Sam Lorde and his spotter, Ken. They work for a private military agency headed by Tamara, who sends them on covert missions where they are tasked with killing their targets. While Ken doesn’t really care all that much about morality and ethics, Sam does, and he feels that his job is necessary to “save the world.” Sam’s belief dwindles when he and his partner are assigned to take down an international arms trader. Initially, the mission seems to be going fine. Sam and Ken have a good vantage point. The target is out in the open gloating in front of a rally against him because he is involved in the fur trade. But then the terrorist’s girlfriend arrives at the venue, and just when Sam takes the shot, she jumps in front of the target.

Take Cover Review: An Adkins-Driven Tour de Force
Image
As the elevator doors slide open, we’re thrust into an intriguing situation. Two seasoned snipers, Sam and Ken, have just arrived at their luxurious hotel penthouse for what should be a routine assignment. However, something doesn’t feel quite right. Their suspicions are quickly confirmed as bullets start blasting through the windows. An unseen enemy has them pinned down with no way out.

Stranded with no cover in the spacious penthouse, tensions rise as the threat draws nearer. Director Nick McKinless ratchets up the suspense through creative staging within the confined space. With the action hero chops of Scott Adkins leading the way, our protagonists must outwit a chorus of cold-hearted foes. Adkins energetically showcases his amazing martial arts skills, engaging in pulse-pounding fights using anything around them.

We learn these men have faced dangers together for years and share a natural rapport. Yet even their tight bond is tested under the extreme pressure.

Scott Adkins & Alice Eve in Generic Action Thriller 'Take Cover' Trailer
Image
"When I get out of this... I'm coming to get you." Ohh boy, watch out! Brainstorm Media has revealed the official trailer for an action thriller titled Take Cover, yet another film being made by a stuntman shifting into directing. It's set for a VOD release in October, though it doesn't seem good enough to waste any money renting it. "No cover, no backup and no way out." A burned-out professional sniper finds himself trapped in an all-glass penthouse by a lethal competitor and must find a way to survive and somehow escape with little to no cover between him and the killer. Starring Scott Adkins as the aging hitman Sam Lorde, Jack Parr, Alice Eve, Madalina Bellariu Ion, Peter Caulfield, and Billy Clements. Meh... Yet another of these extremely generic, exceptionally derivative action films about a hitman trying to get out but being unable to cleanly leave his past.

Scott Adkins Popular New Action Movie On Netflix Wildly Flips His $1 Billion Franchise Role From Last Year
Image
One More Shot became a hit on Netflix, showcasing Adkins as a Navy Seal facing mercenaries in a high-stakes mission. Adkins' character in One More Shot differs greatly from his previous role as a campy villain in John Wick 4. Adkins' upcoming movie, Take Cover, offers him a chance to play a John Wick-like hero in a similar action-packed role.

Scott Adkins' new action movie has made a big splash since arriving on Netflix, but his character couldn't be more different compared to his 2023 role in a $1 billion franchise. One More Shot made its way into Netflix's top 10 trending movies just days after arriving, proving its popularity despite some mixed reviews. Adkins played a Navy Seal attempting to escort a terrorist suspect to Washington and has to fight off a group of mercenaries in the process. Alongside its high-stakes action, One More Shot reunited Michael Jai White with Adkins after Undisputed II: Last Man Standing.

Scott Adkins Should Have Played James Bond & Batman, Says Undisputed Director
Image
Director Isaac Florentine believes Scott Adkins should have played James Bond and Batman because he can both act and perform incredible stunts without the need for doubles. Adkins auditioned for the role of Batman in Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and has long been a fan-favorite for the role due to his resemblance to the character and his martial arts skills. Adkins has multiple action movies in the pipeline, including The Killing Game with Dave Bautista and various other projects such as Lights Out and Diablo.

Despite roles in the likes of Doctor Strange and John Wick: Chapter 4, Scott Adkins continues to fly largely under the radar as action cinema’s best kept secret. But this should not be the case, declares director Isaac Florentine, in a sentiment that will no doubt echo with fans of the Avengement star. Florentine, who has helmed various movies with...
