Synopsis

  • The First Order is plotting to seize military control of the galaxy. A team of Resistance fighters led by General Leia Organa are planning an evacuation from their main base as Supreme Leader Snoke's forces are coming for them. The Resistance holds out hope that Luke Skywalker will return to help them.

Shortly after the Battle of Starkiller Base, resistance fighters led by General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) evacuate their main base when a First Order fleet reaches the planet. Commander Poe Dameron executes a daring plan to distract the First Order dreadnoughts, allowing enough time for the resistance to evacuate the planet. However, he pushes hard in his attack on the dreadnought, which leads to the loss of the entire resistance bomber fleet and also leads to the destruction of the dread-naught.

After the fight, the Resistance vessels jump into hyperspace to escape. Organa reprimands Commander Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) for a successful but costly counter-strike. Meanwhile, former storm trooper Finn wakes up from his coma after his light-saber battle with Kylo. Poe finds him and is happy to see him. The first thing Finn asks is for Rey.

While Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) of the First Order reprimands General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) for his failure to block the evacuation. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) enters the meeting. Snoke notes that, in spite of Kylo killing his father, Han Solo, he may still turn to the light side of the Force. Although Kylo protests, Snoke doesn't have faith in him. On his way down the elevator, Kylo smashes his helmet to pieces in rage.

Hux tracks the Resistance, even though their hyperspace flight which was earlier technically impossible, and a long pursuit begins. Leia demotes Poe as a result of his actions with the dreadnought. Moments later, the First Order ship catches up to the Resistance after tracking their hyper-speed.

The resistance figures that jumping again into hyperspace would waste more fuel, and accomplish nothing, and thus the strategy is to keep out of range of the First Order destroyers and keep shields at the back of the ships, with the Resistance relying on their spaceships' mobility and shields to survive while their fuel supplies dwindle.

During one battle, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) born Ben Solo, son of Leia and Hans, hesitates to attack the lead Resistance ship after sensing the presence of his mother Leia on-board. TIE fighters destroy the bridge of the ship, killing many Resistance leaders. Leia is dragged into space but survives by using the Force. Leia is incapacitated, leaving Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) in command.

Disapproving of their leaders' passive strategy, Poe, Finn (John Boyega), BB-8 and mechanic Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) embark on a secret plan to disable the First Order fleet's tracking device. They then get acquainted and figure out how the First Order was able to track a hyperspace flight. They conceive a plan to disable the tracker which will give the resistance ships to escape to an unknown location. But for that they need a Master code-breaker to get them undetected inside the First Order tracking ship.

Rose met Finn when she stopped him from escaping from the resistance cruiser, on an escape pod. Rose is a big fan of Finn, seeing him as a Resistance hero. However, she zaps him with her taser when she realizes he's trying to escape. Finn notes that the First Order is tracking them through hyper-speed, and they can't make another jump because they are dangerously low on fuel, and the First Order will find them anyway. With Poe's help, they contact Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o) for assistance, but she is in the middle of a fierce battle.

Maz Kanata directs them to the casino town of Canto Bight. She does tell them that she knows a code-breaker on Canto Bight that can help them, and they need to find him: he will be wearing a particular symbol.

Rey (Daisy Ridley) meets Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on the water-world Ahch-To, having traveled there with Chewbacca and R2-D2 aboard the Millennium Falcon, but Luke declines to teach her as a Jedi Master. Under self-imposed exile, Luke refuses to help, believing that the Jedi should end. With Luke still not wanting to have anything to do with the Force or the Jedi, R2-D2 plays him Leia's original message to Obi-Wan Kenobi to persuade Luke to help. After encouragement from R2-D2, he agrees to give Rey three lessons in the ways of the Force.

Rey and Kylo secretly have visions of each other and initiate a dialogue. After learning of Han Solo's death, Luke eventually agrees to give basic initiation to Rey, explaining the Force and his failure as a Jedi Master. However, she soon sees a vision of herself being pulled toward a dark pit, with Luke trying to break her out of it. The pit spews water and snaps Rey out of the vision. Luke says she saw the dark side of the Force, and she didn't even try to stop herself. He tells her he has seen something like this once before, and it didn't scare him then as it does now. This is why he considers the ways of the Jedi to be a failure.

Luke and Kylo give Rey different accounts of the incident that swayed Kylo toward the First Order and Luke to his hermit life. Kylo claims that Luke tried to kill him when he saw that he was becoming powerful, while Luke claims that he saw the darkness in Kylo and for a brief moment wanted to kill him in his sleep, but then gave up the idea and by then it was too late as Kylo woke up and saw Luke standing over him with a light saber in his hands. Unable to convince Luke to join the Resistance, Rey leaves the planet without him to confront Kylo. Luke prepares to burn the Jedi library but hesitates. The spirit of Luke's master Yoda appears and destroys the library by summoning a bolt of lightning. He encourages Luke to learn from his failure. Yoda's spirit tells Luke to help Rey before she is also lost to the dark side. Convinced that Kylo can be redeemed, Rey leaves Ahch-To.

Holdo reveals her plan to discreetly evacuate the remaining Resistance members to a nearby old Rebel Alliance stronghold on planet Crait, using small transports. Believing her actions to be cowardly and risky, Poe instigates a mutiny. Having recovered, Leia neutralizes Poe and allows the evacuation to begin. Holdo remains aboard the ship as a decoy to mislead Snoke's fleet as the others flee to an abandoned base on Crait.

The trio finds the Master Codebreaker (Justin Theroux) playing at a table, but the heroes get captured and thrown into a jail cell for illegally parking their ship. In their cell, Finn and Rose meet a stuttering scoundrel named DJ. He overhears the two of them needing a code-breaker, and he offers his services. DJ manages to open their cell and helps them escape.

Finn, Rose, and BB-8 recruit the computer pirate DJ (Benicio Del Toro) at a casino on Canto Bight, believing that he will be able to help them get inside the First order tracking ship. They fight guards on the way out with the help of BB-8 and ride the Fathiers as they stampede through the casino to get away.

Pursued by the local security, they escape Canto Bight with the help of stable hand children and racing animals they set free. Finn and Rose's ship is destroyed but BB-8 and DJ bring them another one to make their escape. Finn, Rose, and DJ infiltrate Snoke's flagship but are captured by Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), captain of the first order storm troopers. BB-8 manages to escape.

Meanwhile, Rey lands on the same ship and is seized by Kylo. During a confrontation with Snoke, she urges Kylo to rebel. Snoke explains that he controlled the mental connection between Kylo and her as part of a plan to discover Luke's whereabouts. Ordered to kill Rey, Kylo instead kills Snoke. Rey and Kylo work together to kill Snoke's guards. Rey hopes that Kylo has abandoned the dark side, but he instead asks her to rule the galaxy with him. Rey refuses and asks him to join the Resistance. She battles him for control of Luke's light-saber, bisecting the weapon. They struggle through the Force, resulting in Rey escaping. Kylo declares himself the new Supreme Leader.

However, DJ buys his freedom by revealing the Resistance's plan to General Hux, and the First Order fleet begins firing on the evacuation transports, destroying many. Seeing no other option, Holdo sacrifices herself and rams the command ship at light-speed into the First Order ship, splitting it in two and destroying other nearby ships.

BB-8, having escaped the villains' clutches, commandeers a AT-ST walker to fire upon the First Order soldiers. BB-8 frees Rose and Finn, who escape after defeating Captain Phasma, and join the survivors of the evacuation who eventually land on the rebel base on the planet Crait. The surviving Resistance fighters have dwindled to a few dozen or so.

When the First Order, led by Kylo Ren, arrives at the Rebel base, Poe, Finn, and Rose lead a charge with old speeders but are heavily fired upon by dozens of walkers and TIE fighters.

The First Order attacks the Resistance fortress using a siege cannon. The Falcon arrives and draws the TIEs away, while Finn narrowly fails to destroy the main enemy cannon, letting the weapon blast a hole into the fortress' defense. He nearly flies head on until Rose crashes her ship into his to stop him. Finn goes to her and asks why she did it. She tells him they always fight for what they love. She kisses him and then passes out. Finn grabs her and rushes back to the stronghold to get Rose medical attention.

Luke appears and confronts the First Order, allowing the surviving Resistance to escape. Luke's appearance gives hope to the Resistance. He confronts Kylo alone, giving the surviving Resistance fighters time to escape. He then engages Luke in a light-saber duel; upon striking Luke, Kylo realizes that Luke is not physically present but projecting his image through the Force. Luke tells Kylo that he will not be the last Jedi. At that moment, Rey uses the Force to clear the rock pile away for the fighters. Rey helps the remaining Resistance escape on the Falcon. She and Finn embrace. Kylo screams in rage at his defeat as the heroes' board the Falcon and escape.

Exhausted following his distraction of Kylo, Luke dies peacefully on Ahch-To, becoming one with the Force in a homage to the sunset on Tatooine. Rey and Leia sense his death, with Rey claiming that there were no feelings of sadness or pain, only peacefulness and purpose.

The remaining Resistance fighters escape aboard the Falcon. Rey looks at the small numbers hopelessly and turns to Leia. Leia, looking at Rey, states that the rebellion now has all that is needed to rise again.

At Canto Bight, the stable hands recount the story of Luke Skywalker until they are shouted at by one of their owners. Afterward, one of them moves a broom with the Force and gazes into space. On his hand, he wears the ring of the Resistance, as seen earlier in the story worn by Rose.
