All American Will See Major Casting Changes as the Series Comes to an End
Image
Quick Links It Is Bitter Sweet That All American Will Enter Its Final Season, But It Is the Right Move The Future of All American Remains Bright

All American has given fans six seasons of pristine coming-of-age drama, which established itself among the best. Basing itself (loosely) off NFL player Spencer Paysinger's own struggles for coming up through South Central LA to attend Beverly Hills High on a football scholarship, The CW original tackled modern social issues like racial inequality, mental health, and LGBTQ+ representation, weaved compelling character struggles and relationships throughout, and acted as a consistent inspiration of finding your dreams against any challenges. All American is the perfect teen drama.

This has led to the fandom feeling a bit bummed that the series is set to conclude with its seventh and final season, set for an undetermined 2025 release date. However, the more shocking news came recently when...

Hollywood Underestimates Nicole Holofcener: ‘Can Somebody Give Me More Than $6 Million to Make’ a Movie?
Image
When Nicole Holofcener was coming up in the ’90s, she was celebrated as that rare thing: a female writer-director. Today, she’s no longer a rarity, and she’s still delivering sharp, funny observational comedies about flawed middle-class New York women. But somehow, the breadth and potential of her talent remains elusive.

Hollywood gives her scripts to write and rewrite and polish (for the big bucks). She wrote, with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, “The Last Duel” for Ridley Scott, crafting the Jodie Comer character, and the Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh roles in Marvel’s “Black Widow.” She made more on that three-week assignment than three of her movies combined, she said at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which tributed her this year, playing three of her films for an audience unfamiliar with her work. She’s currently writing for Gillian Anderson and Greta Lee in Disney’s latest iteration of “Tron.

Composer Laura Karpman received her first Oscar nomination on Tuesday for Amazon MGM Studios’ American Fiction in Music (Original Score).

In a call with Deadline on Tuesday morning, Karpman is giddy to claim that she might have possessed a little foresight that led to this Oscar reigning moment as the film picked up a total of four other Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Jeffrey Wright for Actor in a Leading Role, Sterling K. It’s been going on for a while, and it’s been even worse post-pandemic, but the Oscar halo effect for Best Picture nominees has diminished greatly.

For some studios, playing off the heat of Oscar nominations is still a business.

Poor Things is currently playing in 1,400 theaters, the widest it has been following its Dec. 8 release, which notched the third best first weekend theater average ($73K) of 2023. Rockstar, the star-studded rock’n’roll album by our November cover star, Dolly Parton, has arrived. Stream it below.

Inspired by her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, Rockstar is the 49th full-length release from Parton, and features a variety of new originals and classic rock covers, as well as a heap of guest appearances by artists like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Ringo Starr, Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, Debbie Harry, Nikki Sixx, and many more.

Speaking with Paramore’s Hayley Williams for Consequence’s most recent cover story, Parton explained that when she found out she was voted into the Rock Hall, she “didn’t feel like [she’d] earned it.” To make up for that, she got into the studio and cut a proper rock album, without cutting any corners. “That was important to me: not to half-ass do a record that’s a country girl singing some rock,...

‘The Creator’ Ending Explained: Director Gareth Edwards Calls It ‘Bittersweet’
Gareth Edwards
Gareth Edwards has many thoughts on the ending of “The Creator,” but he’s even more interested in what audiences think about how the sci-fi film — which depicts a war between mankind and AI — concludes.

In any war, the director notes, sacrifices are made. And in “The Creator’s” case, the ending is “bittersweet,” Edwards noted.

TheWrap asked him to elaborate on the final scenes and their implications (find out if there’s a post-credit here). Obviously, major spoilers from “The Creator” lie ahead, so you’ve been warned.

Spoiler alert: Read on for major plot reveals from “The Creator”

How does “The Creator” end?

In the final act, Joshua (John David Washington) rescues the AI child Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) from the U.S. Army.

Using Alphie’s ability to control machines, the two commandeer a commercial flight into space and fly to the orbital defense platform Nomad, just as the U.

Ananth Narayan Mahadavan Wraps ‘Phule,’ Film About India’s First Mahatma (Exclusive)
Image
Eminent filmmaker Ananth Narayan Mahadevan is in post-production on “Phule,” about the pioneers of women’s education in India.

Jyotirao Govindrao Phule and his wife Savitribai were social reformers known for their efforts against India’s endemic caste system. Phule’s first school for girls was founded in Pune, western India, in 1848. In 1873, Jyotirao Phule and his followers began the Satyashodhak Samaj (Truth-seekers’ Society) to campaign for increased rights for the underprivileged. In 1888, the honorific Mahatma (great soul), a term later used to describe Gandhi, was accorded to Phule.

“The two of them are lethal, the husband and wife, because at a time when the girl child was being refused education and just pushed into marriage, Jyotirao chose to actually educate his little wife – she was just 11 at that time, he was 17 when they got married, because it was the time of child marriage,” Mahadevan told Variety.

Many of the...

Zoe Saldana Reveals Which Co-Stars Made Her Laugh the Most
Image
Zoe Saldana, known for playing Lt. Uhura in the rebooted Star Trek movies, revealed which of her co-stars was best at making her laugh.

The subject came up in an interview with BBC Radio 1, with critic Ali Plumb suggesting Saldana's Guardians of the Galaxy love interest Chris Pratt. "Chris is really good at improvising, so it makes it really hard for you to stay in character, for sure," she answered. "But I also remember, because of the three Star Trek movies that I've done, that being in the same room with Simon Pegg, John Cho or Anton Yelchin... sometimes Chris Pine, whenever he wanted to jump in. Zachary Quinto was hysterical. Because these are very educated individuals, and they're masters of words, and they would whip out little jokes here and there. That was really hard, to stay in character and improvise with them, but I don't improvise. I...

Billie Eilish Gets Bullish, Karol G Makes History, and More of the Best Things We Saw on Lollapalooza 2023’s First Day
Image
Lollapalooza 2023‘s opening day kicked off on Thursday in Chicago’s Grant Park, and it was a scorcher, thanks to artists bringing the heat and the sweltering humidity. The festival inked a 10-year contract with the city last year, and it came with the expansion in capacity, up from 100,000 people to 115,000.

The increase in numbers was apparent during Billie Eilish’s headlining appearance. “There isn’t any place where there aren’t people,” she said, surveying the sea of heads during her show. The festival also marked the first time...

‘Physical’ Star Rose Byrne Breaks Down Her ‘Bittersweet’ and ‘Life-Changing’ Final Season
Image
“Physical” on Apple TV+ was always going to end after Season 3. But even with that plan in place, star and executive producer Rose Byrne felt bringing the series to a close felt “insurmountable.”

She told TheWrap it’s because of the love she has for both the series and creator Annie Weisman’s storytelling that she feels “bittersweet” about this final outing, which began its 10-episode run Wednesday. The series finale is scheduled to premiere Sept. 27.

“It’s an incredible role and an incredible part,” Byrne said in an interview conducted ahead of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. “I’ve never read anything like this. It’s been a really creatively life-changing experience. I feel very protective of the show and Sheila.”

From the first meeting for Season 3, Byrne and Weisman were already discussing how they wanted to “close out” the story of Shelia Rubin, an ’80s housewife-turned-fitness idol. It...

“To Be in Hollywood Is to Be Gaslit”: Justin Simien Levels Up With Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ at a Fraught Time
Image
Filmmaker Justin Simien was the main attraction at the July 15 red carpet premiere of his latest effort, The Haunted Mansion. But it wasn’t because he arrived in a floor-length cape, his tribute to the movie’s costume designer. It was because the hours-old SAG-AFTRA strike prevented his starry cast — Lakeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish and Jamie Lee Curtis among them — from joining. “‘Bittersweet’ is probably the best word for it,” the 40-year-old director explains two days later in his modest Los Angeles office. “I’m glad we got to show the movie [out July 28] — but with the strike and the Bob Iger comments, I feel like I crash-landed into [the event].”

Simien, like so many in Hollywood, is playing professional Whac-a-Mole this summer. Paramount TV suspended his Culture Machine shingle’s overall deal in May because of the stalemate between the studios and the WGA. He launched a GoFundMe to keep the lights...

Kathryn Hahn On “Bittersweet” ‘Tiny Beautiful Things’ Emmy Nomination Amid SAG-AFTRA talks and WGA Strike; ‘Agatha: Coven Of Chaos’ Will Be “Juicy”
Image
In Hulu’s Tiny Beautiful Things, Kathryn Hahn plays Clare, a reimagined version of Cheryl Strayed from Strayed’s memoir of the same name. Working on the story, which examines grief and family close-up, has left Hahn “forever changed” she said on Tuesday morning, shortly after receiving an Emmy nomination for her role.

However, as SAG-AFTRA talks continue, with a possible actors’ strike on the horizon in addition to the ongoing writers’ strike, Hahn said, “Everything feels very bittersweet, doesn’t it?” She recalled her love for the writers’ room on Tiny Beautiful Things and writer-EPs Liz Tigelaar and Cheryl Strayed, adding, “You know, no matter what, we’re all 100 percent behind the writers, and I am filled with gratitude. And we’ll continue to shout their names since they are unable to for a bit.”

And as for whether there will be a Season 2 of the limited series, Hahn said,...

Dolly Parton has often been described as a rock star, but now she’s making that designation a literal one with the upcoming release of her first album of rock music.

Dolly Parton’s ‘Rockstar’ Has a Feature by Literally Every Rock Star
Image
It’s probably safe to say that Dolly Parton will be the only artist this year (and possibly ever) whose new album will include features by Lizzo, Rob Halford, Paul McCartney, and Stevie Nicks. The dual Country Music and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member’s long-awaited rock project Rockstar will bow Nov. 17 and includes more than 40 guests across its 30 tracks.

Largely a covers project, Rockstar includes Parton’s versions of 21 classics along with nine originals. The tracklist announced on Tuesday shows that she reprises many songs with their original performers,...

The Tracklist for Dolly Parton’s Rock Album is a Sight to Behold
Image
Upon her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year, Dolly Parton announced her intention to record a rock album. “If I’m gonna be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I’m gonna have to earn it,” she said at the time.

Parton has spent the last year making good on that promise by enlisting some of the biggest names in music to join her in recording a mix of rock ‘n’ roll originals and covers. The end result, aptly titled Rockstar, will arrive on November 17th via her own Butterfly Records in conjunction with Big Machine Label Group.

When Dolly calls, everyone answer. Just look at the massive 30-song tracklist for Rockstar: there’s literally a Beatles reunion! Steve Perry sings a Journey song! Lizzo plays jazz flute on “Stairway to Heaven”!

Among the notable covers, Sting accompanies Parton on The Police’s “Every Breath You Take,...

Christina Applegate Says She’s ‘Probably Not Going to Work On-Camera Again’ After Filming Final Season of ‘Dead to Me’
Christina Applegate
Christina Applegate says the final season fo “Dead to Me” may be her last on-camera appearance – and that she was glad to share it with dear friend and co-star Linda Cardellini.

“I’m probably not going to work on-camera again, but I’m so glad that I went out with someone who is by far the greatest actress I’ve ever worked with in my entire life, if not the greatest human I’ve ever known,” she said in an interview with Vanity Fair.

After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis while filming Season 3 of the Netflix dark comedy, Applegate continued through to the show’s conclusion, making her first public appearance since her diagnosis last November to receive her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

She spoke of her special connection to Cardellini

“Linda and I, from day one, were in love with each other and trusted each other and supported each other,...

Robin Thicke on Cutting His Hair After First Radio Single, Turning a Bank Robbery Into a Song and Writing for Michael Jackson
Image
Thirty years ago when Robin Thicke was 16, he recorded his first album with R&b star Brian McKnight. But the music wasn’t epic.

“[The label] was willing to put it out, but there wasn’t going to be a lot of promotion money behind it, so I said, ‘Let’s shelve it,’” he recalls.

While still recording his own music, he went on to develop his musicality by writing and producing for others, including Michael Jackson, Usher, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Jordan Knight, Brandy, Raven-Symoné, 98 Degrees, Marc Anthony, Mya, Color Me Badd, Guy Sebastian, Brownstone, Will Young, Kevon Edmonds, Ron Keating, Chante Moore and others.

But he needed to get back to making music for himself, so the early twentysomething decided he wouldn’t cut his hair until he heard his song on the radio.

“My hair grew down to my shoulders, and I ended up meeting Andre Harrell, who changed...

Kevin Morby Revisits ‘This is a Photograph’ With ‘More Photographs (A Continuum)’
Image
Kevin Morby hasn’t completely closed the door on This is a Photograph, the introspective seventh studio album he released last year. On it, he walked a thin line between autobiographical and fictional storytelling while exploring the way childhood memories change with age. But even those 12 songs weren’t enough for him to feel at peace with it all, so he’s going back for more on More Photographs (A Continuum), set for release on May 26.

“If This Is a Photograph is a house that you have been living inside of,...

Theater Camp Review: Heart & Humor Collide In Sunny Showbiz Parody [Sundance]
Image
There's no business like show business, and no group more self-flagellating than theater geeks, as Theater Camp so cheekily discovers. The Sundance Film Festival selection was quickly snapped up by Searchlight Pictures for a cool 8 million, which should serve as a testament to its entertainment value. Directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman, who collaborated on the script with star Ben Platt and his partner Noah Galvin, the film was clearly crafted by artists with a strong investment in stage performance. Theater Camp won't be for everyone, but thespians and drama geeks will find themselves right at home, and even laymen may find more than a few laughs.

Platt plays Amos, "a performer who is a full-time acting teacher" and one among many characters inexplicably dedicated their lives to the Adirond-acts summer camp for Broadway hopefuls. Rather than encourage and inspire, however, each teacher in Theater Camp seems determined to...

There Was a Little Part of David Crosby in All of Us, Whether We Knew It or Not
Image
In my many years of seeing live music, few sights were as dispiriting as the first time I saw David Crosby up close. In the early Eighties, he played a solo show at New York’s Town Hall. Walking onstage, looking a little overweight, unkempt and shaggy in an untucked shirt and baggy pants, he plopped down on a wooden chair. His voice was a bit raspier than we’d heard on his records, and the blissed-out smiles and stage patter he was known for were Mia. At one point,...
