The Oscars will honor the best movie of the year this Sunday, but the infamous Razzie Awards have crowned the “worst” of 2024’s films.
Sony’s much-derided superhero film “Madame Web” has the (dis)honor of winning three Razzies, including worst picture, actress for Dakota Johnson and screenplay. “Joker: Folie à Deux,” another divisive superhero entry,” led with seven nominations and took home screen combo for Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel.
Francis Ford Coppola won for directing his big-budget epic “Megalopolis,” and star Jon Voight won supporting actor for the film — shared with his turns in “Reagan,” “Shadow Land” and “Strangers.” Coppola’s “Megalopolis” received six nominations, which was tied for second-most nods with “Madame Web,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan.”
The famed filmmaker responded to his Razzies on Instagram, saying “box office is only about money, and like war, stupidity and politics has no true place in our future.

Zachary Levi believes that endorsing Donald Trump’s bid to become the President of the United States again “was more important than saving” his own 25-year-old acting career. The Chuck and Shazam! star’s political beliefs “trumped” — obvious pun intended — any worries he had about losing job opportunities in Hollywood, and he continues to act today, even after jumping aboard the "Trump Train" for all to witness. Levi said on The Megyn Kelly Show, while doing the press tour for his new film The Unbreakable Boy:
"I felt peace because I knew that this was more important than saving my career. I think we too often fall into these paradigms, these thought processes of self-preservation, and it is not good. We need to be wise, and we want to survive, and we want to live and flourish and all those things, but we can’t merely make decisions off of,...

Zachary Levi is no stranger to changing gears, from superhero adventures in Shazam! to recently starring as an alcoholic man trying to connect with his autistic son in The Unbreakable Boy. Among the other projects on his upcoming slate is another shift in tone for him, the thriller Hotel Tehran. He will star alongside Liam Neeson, who Levi refers to as "an icon... a legend." The script comes from Guy Moshe based on an idea by Bazzel Baz, a former CIA Intelligence Special Operations Group Officer. Levi was clear about how there are aspects of Neeson's aura that are larger than life, but the man himself is much more:
"He definitely has that aspect that we've all come to know and love in his character work, right? Like that steeliness, you know, "I'll find you," that whole 'Taken' type of character, but he's a sweetheart of a guy. Like, he...

Get ready, PaddiSTANS: our furry king is about to return to the big screens of the United States with Paddington in Peru, and he's bringing with him a fairly decent Rotten Tomatoes score (and hopefully a marmalade sandwich or two). Everyone's favorite stuffed bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) may have debuted in the United Kingdom back in November, but he's finally set to debut his latest adventure here on February 14, 2025 (after being pushed from an original release date of January 17). And while the crticial consensus points to a slightly-less-enjoyable thrill ride than its predecessors, it's still one of the most favorably reviewed movies of the year thus far according to the aforementioned, tomato-based website.
At the time of the film's initial international release, the Rotten Tomatoes score was 91%, but in the intervening weeks leading up to its American debut, the film's score has actually risen slightly to 93%. And while that...

This year’s Academy Award nominations are set to be announced Thursday, after being delayed due to the devastating Los Angeles fires. As such, the annual Golden Raspberry Awards got to get ahead of the Oscars on Tuesday with their own crop of nominees, highlighting what its members believe to be the worst in film for 2024. “Joker: Folie à Deux” leads the field with seven nominations, while “Madame Web,” “Megalopolis,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan” are close behind with six nods apiece.
For “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the musical sequel to Todd Phillips’ Oscar-nominated DC Comics crime film “Joker,” landed nods in worst picture, director, screenplay and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are both up for worst actress and worst actor, respectively, as well as worst screen combo. There are an assortment of reasons leading up to a film's release that make it obvious to audiences it's destined to fail at the box office. Many of the biggest box office flops in the previous year were from celebrated directors and featured a stacked cast full of beloved actors, and yet, it wasn't much of a surprise to see their box office numbers were less than ideal. Films like Megalopolis and Joker: Folie à Deux were once highly anticipated by critics and audiences as a director's passion project and promising sequel, respectively.
However, the closer it came to the films being released, the more obvious it became that they wouldn't be well-received. Many of the other box office failures that were no surprise were surrounded by discouraging conversations detailing messy productions and constantly delayed release dates. Early reviews of such films were also mostly negative and were a telltale...

"Oppenheimer" taking home Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars ceremony was more unusual than you might realize. As much as a WWII-era biopic about a bunch of white guys talking solemnly about Very Important Things qualifies as the ultimate dad movie, Christopher Nolan's film was also the first dyed-in-the-wool blockbuster to win Best Picture in two decades. Just as notably (but more relevant to our purposes here), "Oppenheimer" marked only the second time in that same period that Universal snagged the top prize at the Academy's annual awards show.
Take a step back and you'll notice that the biggest and oldest Hollywood studios, in general, began to win fewer and fewer Best Picture Oscars as the first quarter of the 21st century rolled along. Rather, this was the era in which the likes of indie-style producers and distributors such as Searchlight Pictures, A24, and Neon emerged as major players in the sometimes fun,...

Brazilian writer, director and animator Carlos Saldanha has boarded Carla Melo Gampert’s Oscar-qualified Colombian animated short “La Perra” to accompany the film through its upcoming awards season run.
“La Perra” is largely inspired by Melo’s own life and tells the story of a young woman who leaves her family home in Bogota, a domineering mother and her beloved childhood dog to explore her sexuality in a wider world that often pushes Latina women to transition from cute little girls into traditional mothers, or labels them as sluts – “perras” in Spanish, hence the film’s title – if they don’t conform.

Has Zachary Levi been “canceled” for his politics?
While millions of Americans brace themselves for the horrors of these next several years, not everyone is unhappy with the 2024 election’s grim results.
Actor Zachary Levi is a Trump fan. He’s also an Rfk Jr. fan. Yeah.
But has the entertainment industry “canceled” him for this?

There is a certain type of person who spends a lot of time complaining about things that they dislike and wish to cancel, yet seems convinced that “cancel culture” is a very real societal menace. One of those people is the notorious Bill Maher.
During a recent episode of Maher’s Club Random podcast, Zachary Levi joined him as a guest.

After a week off the charts, Netflix’s Outer Banks returned to the streaming rankings — shooting to No. 1 overall with the release of its latest batch of episodes.

A James Cameron-produced $405 million action movie has landed on Netflix's global chart five years later. Cameron is one of the most commercially successful filmmakers of all time, having written and directed Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic three of the top five highest-grossing films of all time. Collectively, James Cameron's movies have made over $8 billion worldwide, making him the second-highest-grossing director of all time behind Steven Spielberg, though Cameron has only directed 13 movies to Spielberg's 34.

A Zachary Levi movie that flopped at the box office has now become a global hit on Netflix. Overall, 2024 has been up and down in terms of box office performance. The year kicked off with the February release that would become one of the biggest blockbuster flops of the year: Argylle. Argylle was not only panned by critics, but it lost millions of dollars as it grossed $96.2 million on an estimated $200 million budget. This was not a great start to the year, leaving a lukewarm box office in an early 2024 weekend.
Since then, the box office has picked up quite a bit in 2024. Family movies have been a big part of this year's box office wins, with the critically-acclaimed Inside Out 2 taking the no. 1 spot at the box office overall. Other family-friend hits in the global box office top 10 this year include Despicable Me 4, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

For the second time in two weeks, a previous #1 VOD release, still at premium price, returned to #1 after a week in a lower position.
“The Wild Robot” (Universal), still #4 in theaters this weekend parallel to home availability, repeats the move “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros. Discovery) managed last week.
The rise comes for two reasons. First, a lack of competitive new releases, including disinterest in “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Wbd). Second is likely its rental price reduction from an initial premium at $24.99 to the more standard $19.99 PVOD cost.
After over three weeks where five different original movies took the top daily spot, Will Smith, whose “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” was his last studio #1, returned with his 2015 mid-level success “Focus.” But for most of the week, “Meet Me Next Christmas” led their list.

Zachary Levi found worldwide success with the first installment of his superhero film, Shazam!, and less with its sequel. In 2024, he starred in Harold and the Purple Crayon, whose reception was worse than anyone expected, and among his lowest-rated projects.
Although Harold and the Purple Crayon had a less than favorable run at the box office, it found success on Netflix, reaching no. 8 in the U.S. for the week between Oct. 28 and Nov. 3. The fantasy comedy starring Levi adapted Crockett Johnson's 1995 children's book of the same name, and it combined live-action and animation. Even the deal with Netflix was problematic, but the children's film drew enough interest to make it into the top 10.

Netflix continues to be a place where initially poorly-received movies go to thrive. A number of 2024 releases, including the critically panned horror pic "Tarot" and the family film (and box office bust) "Harold and the Purple Crayon," have quickly climbed the streaming charts after hitting the streamer this year. Now, an already-forgotten 2016 biopic is getting the Netflix treatment.
The movie in question is called "The Infiltrator," and it just dropped on the streamer on November 1, 2024. It's worth noting that the film is also available on tons of other free and paid subscription services right now, including Paramount+, The Roku Channel, Hoopla, and Plex. But Netflix is still a massive, culturally dominant streamer, and its viewership data is now easily available thanks to sites like FlixPatrol. According to the data site, the movie was the sixth most-watched feature film title on Netflix as of November 5, 2024, ranking higher than recent Netflix Original...

Harold and the Purple Crayon sees the iconic storybook character come to the real world to find his "Old Man" and discover why he was ever created. The 2024 movie puts a fresh twist on the 1955 picture book of the same name by Crockett Johnson, first detailing how the familiar little boy in a onesie grew up in his world of imagination. However, when the narrator of Harold's world, whom he had dubbed his Old Man, seemed to have vanished, Harold (Zachary Levi) went on an adventure with his friends Moose (Lil Rel Howery) and Porcupine (Tanya Reynolds) to the real world to discover what had become of him.
While maneuvering the real world and its characters in Harold and the Purple Crayon, Harold ran into the mother-son duo Terri (Zooey Deschanel) and Mel (Benjamin Bottani). With the help of a local librarian, Gary (Jemaine Clement), Harold discovers the children's book...

This year has been plagued by some pretty big box office bombs, from "Joker: Folie à Deux" utterly failing to meet the expectations set up by its predecessor to "Borderlands" flopping harder than a middle-aged gamer playing against 12-year-olds on "Fortnite." Now, at least one of the biggest box office flops of the year is getting a second life on Netflix.
"Harold and the Purple Crayon" is currently holding the number 5 spot on Netflix's top 10 streaming charts. Directed by Carlos Saldanha, the film is a live-action sequel to Crockett Johnson's beloved children's book of the same name that centers on Harold (Zachary Levi), a man who can make anything come to life simply by drawing it, who had drawn himself in his favorite book as a kid. Sony's film adaptation of the popular children's picture book, Harold and the Purple Crayon, brings together an impressive cast of talented performances. Released in theaters on August 2, 2024, Harold and the Purple Crayon broke into Netflixs top 10 after an October 31 streaming release. The Oscar-nominated director Carlos Saldanha utilizes the actors expertly, ensuring that their background experiences fit perfectly with their Harold and the Purple Crayon characters.
Although there are some crucial differences, Harold and the Purple Crayon shares the same basic premise as the book. When Harold and his friends draw a portal into the real world, they must seek help to return to their magic homeworld. While waiting for the portal to open back up, Harold, Moose, and Porcupine set out to draw magic in the life of a family of two. ‘The Substance’ Does Equal to ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ on PVOD, but ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Is Bigger
Warner Bros.’ woes with “Joker: Folie à Deux” continue with a weak debut on PVOD. The disastrous around $300 million investment for them left theaters after four weeks with under $60 million in domestic gross. Now, it is falling flat in initial PVOD response.
It placed fourth on both iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (revenue-counting) after its release last Tuesday. “The Substance” (Mubi), released on Thursday (and also streaming at their site for subscribers), is third at iTunes, sixth at Fandango, debuts at #1.

Netflix has become somewhat infamous for picking up, to put it gently, lesser movies from other studios and throwing them into the ever-growing pile that is their streaming library. Well, it turns out that not even Netflix wanted to buy this particular critical and box office failure, as the streaming giant reportedly declined to purchase the fantastical comedy Harold and the Purple Crayon starring Zachary Levi.
News of Netflixs rejection comes courtesy of a report by Bloomberg, who state that, in the months before Sony planned to release the movie, studio executives called their peers at Netflix to see if the streaming service wanted to buy the movie. While the report does say that Sony executives liked the film just fine, which is not exactly a ringing endorsement, they worried it would fail to break through competing against two other blockbuster animated films, Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4,...

Netflix refused to buy Sony's new animated film Harold and the Purple Crayon as part of a new content strategy. Based on the children's book of the same name and directed by Carlos Saldanha, the movie stars Zachary Levi as the titular character, who lives in an animated world where he can create anything by simply drawing it. His adventure begins when he enters the real world and discovers there's a lot he doesn't know. Ahead of its release, Harold and the Purple Crayon prompted baffled reactions online, particularly because Levi's character is typically depicted as a child.
According to Bloomberg, prior to Sony's planned release of Harold and the Purple Crayon on August 2, studio executives inquired about Netflix's interest in acquiring the film for its streaming platform in fear that it'd fall short with the competition from Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4, which both had the same release window.

For many readers, Zachary Levi is most recognized for his recent role as Shazam in the Dceu. The first film was a notable success, resonating with both audiences and critics while achieving profitability despite centering on a relatively lesser-known character.
In contrast, the sequel received significant backlash from both critics and viewers, leading to considerable financial losses for the studios. Various factors may have contributed to this failure, including the understanding that the film was not setting up any future narratives, especially in light of the Dceu’s decline during that period.
Following the release of Shazam 2, Levi made headlines again by accusing James Gunn of nepotism, highlighting his frequent hiring of his brother, Sean Gunn, for various projects.

For many of our readers, Zachary Levi is best known for his recent portrayal of Shazam in the Dceu. The first film was a significant success, sitting well with both audiences and critics while proving profitable despite its focus on a relatively obscure character.
However, the sequel faced harsh criticism from both audiences and critics alike, resulting in substantial financial losses for the studios. Several factors may have contributed to this downfall, including the widespread knowledge that the film was not paving the way for future stories, given the Dceu’s decline at that time.
After the release of ‘Shazam 2,’ Levi generated headlines again by suggesting that James Gunn is a nepotist, pointing out his tendency to hire his brother, Sean Gunn, for various projects.
It’s likely that Levi’s frustration stems from the fact that he probably won’t be reprising his role in the newly established Dcu.

Actors often long for the one big role that propels them into superstardom, and, as it turns out, Zachary Levi hoped it would be Shazam! The actor, who endeared himself to nerds everywhere by playing Chuck Bartowski on the cult action-comedy series Chuck, wanted to transition to big screen projects that would likely lead to even bigger big screen projects, and it appeared he was on his way. Shazam! Star Commits “Career Suicide” — Or Does He?
When Zachary Levi stood onstage at a Sept. 28 rally in Michigan and endorsed Donald Trump, he declared it an act of “career suicide” that would end his chances of working again in “very, very liberal” Hollywood. The crowd ate it up, applauding the 44-year-old Shazam! star for his sacrifice to the Maga cause. But in L.A., there was more than a little head-scratching. Not because Levi was endorsing a convicted felon and adjudicated sex offender — the anti-vaxxer actor has done weirder things than that, like supporting Robert Kennedy Jr. for president — but because lots of folks here had assumed Levi’s mainstream career already was all but dead. His latest big-screen venture, Harold and the Purple Crayon, was one of the year’s biggest box office duds, and his 2023 superhero movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, had one of the worst...

The U.K. and Ireland box office reached £120.2 million ($158.2 million) in August, marking the highest monthly total since July 2023’s £160 million ($210.5 million) “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, per numbers from Comscore. Year-to-date figures now trail 2023 by 12%, an improvement from the 15% deficit at the month’s start.
Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” dominated with £29.7 million, pushing its total to £55.3 million. The sequel now ranks as the third-highest grossing 15-rated release, behind only Warner Bros.’ “Joker” (£58.2 million) and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” (£59.7 million).
Sony’s “It Ends With Us” secured the second spot with £19.4 million, becoming 2024’s seventh-highest grosser. The romantic drama marks Blake Lively’s biggest U.K. release to date. Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” claimed third place, adding £16.9 million for a £45.2 million cume. The animated sequel is tracking close to its predecessors’ lifetime totals.
Disney’s “Alien: Romulus” debuted at fourth with £11.5 million, becoming director Fede Alvarez’s top-grossing film and 2024’s highest-earning horror release.

“Twisters” (Universal) wasn’t the biggest film of the summer. But it is becoming the comeback kid among the group, both theatrically and at home.
The tornado-focused special effects disaster film just had a very rare weekend in theaters. In its seventh weekend, losing 200 screens, its gross increased 17 percent. That comes in its third week at home on PVOD. And right at the same time, “Twisters” returned to #1 at iTunes, edging out the second weekend of “Inside Out 2” (Disney), 2024’s biggest hit.
The Pixar film retains its top spot at Fandango, with the advantage that its $24.99 rental cost gives it with that site listing by revenue earned, not transactions like iTunes does. In any event, the split decision this week continues a now multi-month trend of no film placing #1 at both for two consecutive weeks.
After a rare repeat at Netflix, where Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry’s...
