Canadian actor Graham Greene, who died Monday, is being remembered by a wide range of his acting and filmmaking colleagues. Kevin Costner, who directed him to a supporting actor Oscar nomination and co-starred with him in “Dances With Wolves,” paid tribute on Instagram Tuesday.
“A few things come to mind when I think of Graham Greene and our time together on ‘Dances With Wolves,'” he wrote.
“I think of how willing he was to learn the Lakota language. I think of my joy when I heard that his work on the film was recognized with an @theacademy Awards nomination. And I think of this scene in particular, when he was able to establish so much about the relationship between Dunbar and the natives with so few words. He was a master at work and a wonderful human being.”

Late summer breakout Weapons from New Line/Warner Bros added an estimated $12.4m from 3,416 locations and returned to the top after four weekends as a muted Labor Day holiday session closed out the season.
Zach Cregger’s missing schoolchildren horror stands at$134.6m in North America and more than $230m worldwide. It hasbeen a late-arriving star of a season that for a moment some thought would cross $4bn for the first time since Barbie and Oppenheimer powered the summer of 2023.

The Toxic Avenger has been a long time coming…almost to the point it seemed that Macon Blair’s new take on the classic Troma flag-bearer would be buried out in the wilderness, never to be seen again. It was not just fans who worried that this could be the outcome of Toxie’s revival, as Blair recently agreed that it had been an “anxious” wait to see if the movie would become another unjustified tax write-off.
While there is now talk of possible sequels and more adventures for Toxie, Blair explained to Variety that there was a time when he really just had to have faith that the movie...

On Sept. 21, 2023, in Austin, Texas, “The Toxic Avenger” had its big debut.
A remake of the 1984 film from schlock pioneers Troma Entertainment, this new version felt like an elevated take – the social commentary and environmentalism of the original was there, along with the gross-out gags, but the filmmaking (by writer/director Macon Blair) was more competent, and the cast was full of recognizable performers like Peter Dinklage, Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon. The crowd for “The Toxic Avenger,” which screened as part of Fantastic Fest, appreciated this latest incarnation – there were applause breaks and laughter throughout. The movie hit. And it hit big.

Legendary Entertainment may be looking to acquire Lionsgate Studios, which has just spun off on its own ticker on Wall Street.
It’s very early days. Lionsgate just split in half last month with Starz going one way, Lionsgate Studios the other, precisely so that either, or both, could be primed for M&a.
What’s clear is that Lionsgate and Legendary are at a minimum having conversations around a couple of feature co-productions that could be a litmus test in regards to seeing how the two companies jam together, and where to take it from there.
Bloomberg was first to report the feelers from Legendary. Deadline hears that other parties have also reached out to Lionsgate, which, again, should not be surprising as the media industry appears on the cusp of a new era of dealmaking and Lionsgate Studios is now flying solo. There had been interest in the mini-major before the split,...

Denis Villeneuve hasn’t made the trip to shoot on the Mediterranean islands of Malta yet. But if Malta’s film commissioner has anything to say about it, he hopes Villeneuve could follow filmmakers like Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg to shoot the next James Bond film among the country’s atmospheric ancient villages and stunning sea locations.

Dune 3 has an official title. In a surprising turn of events, the third installment in Legendary and Denis Villeneuve's Dune franchise will not share the same name as Frank Herbert's 1969 sequel novel, Dune: Messiah.
According to Variety, Dune 3 has been officially titled Dune: Part Three, continuing the naming convention the previous two installments used. The first movie was released and marketed as Dune, but titled on-screen as Dune: Part One, while its sequel carried the title Dune: Part Two. Until now, it had not been expected that Part Three would be used as the title, considering that the first two movies were a two-part adaptation of Herbert's original 1965 novel, simply titled Dune. With Herbert's sequel bearing the title Dune Messiah, many expected Villeneuve's adaptation to follow suit.

The DNA in this new round of dinosaurs is so good that it’s leading Universal/Amblin’s Jurassic World Rebirth to a higher worldwide opening than previously reported, that being $322.5M worldwide (instead of $318M+) with $147.8M domestic over five days and $174.7M foreign take. As we already told you, it’s the second-biggest opening for a Jurassic movie in the franchise behind 2015’s Jurassic World with $525.5M.

A lot of people were disappointed with the horrible sequel to Pacific Rim. While Uprising failed, there were a slew of ideas from the original creative team that could have made for a prequel that could have been a box office juggernaut in recent years.
If only we had Guillermo del Toro and his team had gotten their way, we could have had another mecha monster hit to enjoy in theaters. However, the original writer of the film, Travis Beacham, had a fantastic idea for a prequel, despite not being very keen on them as a concept.
Pacific Rim || Credit: Legendary
If this film were developed by the production company, it would have delved deep into the history of the post-apocalyptic world created by Guillermo del Toro. The prequel film would have looked into how the tradition of giant monsters being punched by giant robots became humanity’s favorite pastime.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament has returned, and as you’ll see from the most profitable films of 2024 that we’re about to disclose, a movie’s game doesn’t end at the box office. Rather, its downstream revenues and subsequent home windows must be taken into account. Streaming continues to be a wildcard: While traditional motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount and Universal rely on lucrative pay two and pay three streamer deals to catapult their slates into the black, those streamers who’ve embraced theatrical (specifically Amazon MGM Studios and Apple Original Films) have a clandestine metric as to how they evaluate a movie’s post-cinema success. By traditional studio P&l standards, some of those releases would be considered flops. Given that, Apple and Amazon are excluded from this year’s survey. The Most Valuable Blockbuster series runs later rather than sooner as...

Disney has just gotten the “Snow White” controversy to die down (thanks to “Minecraft”), and already they have a new kerfuffle to deal with. With a domestic box office year now lagging behind last year’s by 6% (it was -11% as of last Sunday), the motion picture industry needed CinemaCon this week like a pop of Viagra. Here are the takeaways from Las Vegas:
There’s Still A Belief That Theatrical Can Work

However, what was clear coming away from the studio-exhibitor love-in at Caesars Palace was that the studios aren’t bailing on theatrical: they delivered the stars, they delivered stunts (we’ll get into that) with a robust lineup of product including Avatar: Fire & Ash, Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth, Ballerina, Lilo & Stich, Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning to indicate that better days are ahead. The new Minecraft movie is minting gold at the box office.
The family-friendly movie earned a huge $58 million on Friday — including a record $10.6 million in previews — putting it on course for a domestic debut of $135 million or more.
Not only would that mark the biggest opening of the year to date, but it would also mark one of the top starts ever for a video game adaptation. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in early April 2023, presently wears the domestic crown with $146.4 million. (Some rival studios show Minecraft doing as much as $150 million.)
The high-wattage ensemble pic is coming in well ahead of expectations and couldn’t have come at a better time. The 2025 box office has seen its fortunes fall off dramatically in recent weeks. Minecraft could prove to be the shot of confidence Hollywood studios and cinema owners need after recent films, including Disney’s Snow White, transformed into major disappointments.

We’ve confirmed that VFX-less copies of Warner Bros/Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie has been leaked online. Who the hell wants to watch that? The situation is under control with the studios Whac-a-Mole-ing them out. We’re told that it appears most of the links have been expunged.
There were screenshots and footage from the Jared Hess-directed title shared on social media platforms. This is par for the course when a popular movie opens: piracy ensues. Note this wasn’t a situation of a movie being shot in a movie theater, then seeped online, rather a security breach in a cut of the pic getting out to the public.
At the same time, online piracy amped up during the pandemic, and was a chief reason why the studios backed away from their “brilliant” (I say that sarcastically) idea to go theatrical day-and-date with movies; Disney’s Black Widow...

A Minecraft Movie yearns to win the weekend after a $10.55 million launch at the Thursday box office
Update: Warner Bros. and Legendary are increasing the ticket sales total for A Minecraft Movie‘s Thursday preview from $7 million to an astounding $10.55 million. The new total leaves the $10.3M launch for Universal and Blunhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s in the rearview, making Minecraft‘s total the all-time preview record holder for a movie based on a video game.

Updated: As Hollywood begins to descend upon Las Vegas ahead of the start of CinemaCon tomorrow, it was a mixed bag at the international box office this weekend. Jason Statham-starrer A Working Man muscled in with a $30.2M global bow, including $15M from overseas markets, while Snow White saw a 48% drop in the offshore sophomore session.
At the same time, Gower Street Analytics has increased its global 2025 forecast to $34.1B. Though that revision is largely down to the overperformance of Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2, there’s plenty to look forward to on the horizon – much of which we’ll get a glimpse at and be reporting on from here in Las Vegas this week.
Looking for now at this weekend overseas, Disney’s Snow White was the top studio movie of the session, adding $22.1M from 51 offshore markets. That takes the running international total to $76.3M and global to $143.1M.

Looking for now at this weekend overseas, Disney’s Snow White was the top studio movie of the session, adding $22.1M from 51 offshore markets. That takes the running international total to $76.3M and global to $143.1M.

Several major movies have suffered release date delays, including Oscar-winner and Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio’s upcoming mysterious crime thriller. Set to be helmed by Academy Award nominee Paul Thomas Anderson, the project has now been pushed back from August 8 to September 26, while Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein musical The Bride! faces an even greater delay, moving from September to March 6, 2026.
But, in some good news, while DiCaprio’s latest venture and The Bride! have been pushed back, Barbarian director Zach Cregger’s upcoming horror epic Weapons starring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner has been pulled forward. Originally set for release in January 2026, Weapons will now take the August 8, 2025, slot left by DiCaprio.

Godzilla and King Kong are enjoying the kind of success in recent years that's almost unprecedented in the United States. Now, Legendary Comics is bringing fans Monsterverse Declassified, a new anthology coming to comic shops and bookstores this spring. There are not many details on the creative team or direction yet, but Declassified will feature Abaddon, Tiamat, Behemoth, and even more Titans.
Hot on the heels of the announcement that Kong will return to Skull Island in a graphic novel by Simon Furman and Christopher Jones, the Declassified graphic novel will be in stores on May 13, 2025. And yes, we can confirm this anthology will offer a day in the life of Doug, "the tiniest Titan of them all," bound to make for a pretty delightful story for fans of the franchise. Sadly, it doesn't look like Doug's story will be told by Art Baltazar and Franco, in spite of that slogan.

Magic: The Gathering is a collectible trading card game that's been popular since the early 1990s, where players take on the roles of powerful Planeswalker wizards and do battle against each other. The game currently has 50 million players around the world. And now, Hollywood wants to make a Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This is a joint venture between Hasbro Entertainment, which owns Magic: The Gathering; and Legendary Entertainment, which is behind the new swath of Dune movies and TV shows, as well as the newer Godzilla/Kong movies and the upcoming Minecraft movie. They know their way around a franchise.
Per THR, the plan is to start with a Magic: The Gathering movie before expanding to TV. Adapting Magic to the screen is different from adapting, say, Dune, which is based on a book that has a story with a beginning, middle and end.
