    Drawn Together R.I.P.

Note: I am legally blind and cannot see 3-D, if you want to read about the 3-D aspects of this film you need to look elsewhere as I will not be commenting on them.

I will begin this review by saying that if you don't know what Drawn Together is, you probably don't care much about this movie. If you are reading this because it popped up on your recommended list then you should go back and watch the series and THEN watch this movie.

Know this though, this show (including the uncensored movie) is raunchy, I mean RAUNCHY! If you have a weak stomach, if you think that South Park is stupid or should be taken off the air, you should avoid this show like the plague. It is not for you. As a matter of fact, If you are not in favor of censorship you may STILL have your convictions pushed to the edge. This is not a show for children or weaklings.

The plot of the series (if it can be said to have one) is simple: The first animated reality show. Cartoon characters of various kinds are brought to live in a Real World style house. The characters are archetypal cartoon types from a Pikachu-type battle monster to a Betty Boop knockoff. The thing that makes this show work (at least to me) is that these are the characters when they aren't being characters. In other words, If you can imagine Daffy Duck finishing a take, going home and indulging in all the debauchery that Hollywood offers, you are starting to see what this show is like. What emerges is a post-modern mix of the real world, The Real World, the cartoon world and a mix of any other cultural reference you can possibly think of.

"So that's the series?" I hear you saying, "You're supposed to be reviewing the movie!" Well yes I am, and That brings me here.

After Futurama showed that Direct to video movies could not only lend vitality to a canceled series but might actually have the ability to drag a show back on the air, it was natural that some of the other good shows that were canceled because of network bottom lines might make it back on the air as well.

Enter Drawn Together: The Movie…The Movie, a perfect example, this series was rated number one on college campuses across the country and was canceled anyhow. It could be said that this is because TV networks don't care about smart people. See? I just said it, so it can be said! This Direct to DVD movie takes the philosophical fight right to the producers. The Drawn Together Gang has to travel to Make-a-point land to get a point, because the racist/gay/violent/sexual humor of the show seems to have no point. Along the way they have a number of interesting moments (including a moment when the cast listens to the DVD commentary to escape a bad situation) and meet some strange (I mean REALLY strange) characters such as a very strange little girl and a giant that craps into his own mouth.

The only questions that really matter here are 1) Does the movie live up to the series 2) Can you sustain a show that usually has 22 minutes of content for an 80 minute movie. The most important question to the fans is "Can this movie bring Drawn Together back on the air?" The answer to the first two questions is a qualified "Yes". If you are a fan of this show you've probably watched Drawn Together episodes back to back on the DVDs, this just saves you from having to do that. As to the latter, the story actually does drag on a bit, however the writers seem perfectly aware of this - one of the characters even asks "Is there a Wrap-this-up-already land??" The answer to the third question is "NO". The movie is done in Flash which alienated some viewers. It needs to be said that the creators of Drawn Together were doing a movie for half the budget of one episode of the series and they did it fairly well. This was obviously done by the network (a network too cheap to provide 3-D glasses for a 3-D movie) to destroy the show forever.

I think they have, 80 minutes of writing on an 11 minute budget shows and the writers should not be blamed for it.

To end on a positive (kinda) note though, fans DO get closure in this movie, there is an end.

    R.I.P. Drawn Together.

    There are no words

I'm fairly indifferent to the show Drawn Together. It did exactly what it wanted to do during it's run: be as raunchy, offensive, and disgusting as a cartoon could be. That being said however, it did have some actually funny moments. But this movie is something else entirely. I've haven't been this disgusted and annoyed by a movie in quite some time. The main idea of this movie is that shows should be allowed to be as gross and shocking as they want to be, as if that's the only reason Drawn Together was cancelled. It also takes time to insult South Park by implying that the only difference between the two shows is that South Park has social commentary. Drawn Together, the difference between you and South Park is South Park is actually genuinely funny and has good writing. South Park has characters that can bring common sense into their crazy world. Drawn Together is a show of jerks being jerks to each other in a world of jerks with no balance to it whatsoever. There is a HUGE difference between you and South Park, and the fact that they even brought them into this train-wreck of a movie is an insult to Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The gross-out and gore in this is downright nauseating. Every minute, something bloody, pussy, and feces-related is being shoved in your face. Needless to say, don't watch this after eating. Or while eating. Or if you ever want to eat again. The animation is also awful. It's another production that thinks that using flash animation is an excuse to be lazy. Flash animation is a great tool. It allows you to animate faster so you can animate more to a degree that it can look better than traditional hand-drawn animation. For an example, look at seasons 4 and 5 of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Here, it's a stilted, uncanny mess that looks like it's going to break down at any second. Everything about this movie just angers me. It angers me that three years after being canceled, the creators of this show think they drop a big giant middle finger on their fans and expect them to like it. It angers me that they would have the audacity to compare themselves to a much better show. It angers me that these talented voice actors like Cree Summer, Jess Harnell, and Tara Strong had a part in this. No words are able to describe how terrible this movie is. It's terrible in every sense of the word. No plot, no effort, no substance, just pain. Plain, unadulterated pain. Avoid this movie like the plague. But seeing most fans of the show seem to hate this, you probably already are.

Not as good as the series, but still worth watching!

This movie mostly received negative reviews, but i don't understand why. It was quite funny, though you can't compare it to the series. The series spoofs several other series and movies, while the movie mainly spoofs "Drawn Together" itself.

The movie is a bad-taste-comedy, that for sure, and people who only laugh about intelligent humor won't find this film funny. But the fans of DT will know the humor.

I know some people think this movie should be rated NC-17, but i think it's an absolute R rating. There is nudity, but it is not represented in a sexual way. And there is sex, but without nudity. This is not a porn movie or something. The violence in this movie is very comical, though bloody, but i think if the movie would have no sexuality and only violence it would have been rated PG-13. There is frequent sexual language and profanity but it is not stronger than in Jay and Silent Bob, which had the R-rating. Actually i think this movie's BBFC rating would be rather 15 than 18.

The animation style may is not as good as the series' animation style, but it is not as terrible as anyone says.

The plot starts with a very good idea - but it gets really weird and strange around half of the movie.

I think the movie is worth watching and i found it good, though i prefer the series.

    Good for a few laughs

While not surpassing the original show, the movie was pretty decent. Dave Jesser and Matt Silverstein are great comedic writers and still managed to put together a solid reminder of what Drawn Together once was. There were still plenty of good jokes written from each characters perspective. The animation was almost where it was during the television series. Xander in general as a character seemed to be a bit off, i don't know what the deal was there. I hope this is a beginning to the show getting a re-hash for at least one season. I had also hoped there would be more 10 per center jokes (jokes that only 10% of the people off the street who watch the show understand) but maybe this was them trying to branch out and get a larger audience to possibly rent or buy the film.

All and all I give this film a 7/10. It's not for everyone and never will be... but if you have a sense of a humor and aren't afraid to laugh at what many would consider morally repulsive then you will think watching this was worth your time.

If anything, you'll be impressed by Hero's new fine-ass lady friend.

    A Fine Conclusion

Drawn Together was full-throttle crudity and crassness, and this concluding movie makes for a satisfying ending. Although very much made on the cheap, with many segments of filler, the movie stays on par with the series, not adding much more or taking much away.

I laughed. In fact, I laughed quite a bit. It makes a nice little argument that "gross for gross' sake" is alright, and takes its time to critique South Park, the show that took its time slot. For the makers of Drawn Together, it seems absurd that a show can only be crude if its making some sort of commentary, crudeness by itself can be just as funny and not so pretentious as South Park. Many of those laughs were "bad laughs", the kind where you feel ashamed afterward. I find those good for my health now and then.

Technically, the movie lacks some of the hand-drawn aesthetic of the show, but the bar wasn't too high to begin with. This was never a serious show, great for when you just wanted to switch your brain off for a half-hour, and the movie provided the same dumb humor, and after three seasons I came to expect occasional lapses in the writing quality. Worth a look for a fan of the show.

In the 3-D version, the viewers are prompted to wear their 3-D glasses before a 3-D sequence begins. Any characters seen wearing 3-D glasses in the movie wear them backwards, with the red lens over the right eye and the blue lens over the left eye.

    • Versions alternatives
Released to DVD with both standard widescreen and 3-D versions. The 3-D is only for certain sequences, preceded by a prompt to the viewers to wear their 3-D glasses, which are not included. There's even a joke on the DVD that Comedy Central was too cheap to include 3-D glasses with the DVD purchase.
