Drawn Together R.I.P.

Note: I am legally blind and cannot see 3-D, if you want to read about the 3-D aspects of this film you need to look elsewhere as I will not be commenting on them.

I will begin this review by saying that if you don't know what Drawn Together is, you probably don't care much about this movie. If you are reading this because it popped up on your recommended list then you should go back and watch the series and THEN watch this movie.

Know this though, this show (including the uncensored movie) is raunchy, I mean RAUNCHY! If you have a weak stomach, if you think that South Park is stupid or should be taken off the air, you should avoid this show like the plague. It is not for you. As a matter of fact, If you are not in favor of censorship you may STILL have your convictions pushed to the edge. This is not a show for children or weaklings.

The plot of the series (if it can be said to have one) is simple: The first animated reality show. Cartoon characters of various kinds are brought to live in a Real World style house. The characters are archetypal cartoon types from a Pikachu-type battle monster to a Betty Boop knockoff. The thing that makes this show work (at least to me) is that these are the characters when they aren't being characters. In other words, If you can imagine Daffy Duck finishing a take, going home and indulging in all the debauchery that Hollywood offers, you are starting to see what this show is like. What emerges is a post-modern mix of the real world, The Real World, the cartoon world and a mix of any other cultural reference you can possibly think of.

"So that's the series?" I hear you saying, "You're supposed to be reviewing the movie!" Well yes I am, and That brings me here.

After Futurama showed that Direct to video movies could not only lend vitality to a canceled series but might actually have the ability to drag a show back on the air, it was natural that some of the other good shows that were canceled because of network bottom lines might make it back on the air as well.

Enter Drawn Together: The Movie…The Movie, a perfect example, this series was rated number one on college campuses across the country and was canceled anyhow. It could be said that this is because TV networks don't care about smart people. See? I just said it, so it can be said! This Direct to DVD movie takes the philosophical fight right to the producers. The Drawn Together Gang has to travel to Make-a-point land to get a point, because the racist/gay/violent/sexual humor of the show seems to have no point. Along the way they have a number of interesting moments (including a moment when the cast listens to the DVD commentary to escape a bad situation) and meet some strange (I mean REALLY strange) characters such as a very strange little girl and a giant that craps into his own mouth.

The only questions that really matter here are 1) Does the movie live up to the series 2) Can you sustain a show that usually has 22 minutes of content for an 80 minute movie. The most important question to the fans is "Can this movie bring Drawn Together back on the air?" The answer to the first two questions is a qualified "Yes". If you are a fan of this show you've probably watched Drawn Together episodes back to back on the DVDs, this just saves you from having to do that. As to the latter, the story actually does drag on a bit, however the writers seem perfectly aware of this - one of the characters even asks "Is there a Wrap-this-up-already land??" The answer to the third question is "NO". The movie is done in Flash which alienated some viewers. It needs to be said that the creators of Drawn Together were doing a movie for half the budget of one episode of the series and they did it fairly well. This was obviously done by the network (a network too cheap to provide 3-D glasses for a 3-D movie) to destroy the show forever.

I think they have, 80 minutes of writing on an 11 minute budget shows and the writers should not be blamed for it.

To end on a positive (kinda) note though, fans DO get closure in this movie, there is an end.

R.I.P. Drawn Together.

Good for a few laughs

While not surpassing the original show, the movie was pretty decent. Dave Jesser and Matt Silverstein are great comedic writers and still managed to put together a solid reminder of what Drawn Together once was. There were still plenty of good jokes written from each characters perspective. The animation was almost where it was during the television series. Xander in general as a character seemed to be a bit off, i don't know what the deal was there. I hope this is a beginning to the show getting a re-hash for at least one season. I had also hoped there would be more 10 per center jokes (jokes that only 10% of the people off the street who watch the show understand) but maybe this was them trying to branch out and get a larger audience to possibly rent or buy the film.

All and all I give this film a 7/10. It's not for everyone and never will be... but if you have a sense of a humor and aren't afraid to laugh at what many would consider morally repulsive then you will think watching this was worth your time.

If anything, you'll be impressed by Hero's new fine-ass lady friend.

A Giant Middle Finger To Comedy Central, And The Show's Fans

Not as good as the series, but still worth watching!

This movie mostly received negative reviews, but i don't understand why. It was quite funny, though you can't compare it to the series. The series spoofs several other series and movies, while the movie mainly spoofs "Drawn Together" itself.

The movie is a bad-taste-comedy, that for sure, and people who only laugh about intelligent humor won't find this film funny. But the fans of DT will know the humor.

I know some people think this movie should be rated NC-17, but i think it's an absolute R rating. There is nudity, but it is not represented in a sexual way. And there is sex, but without nudity. This is not a porn movie or something. The violence in this movie is very comical, though bloody, but i think if the movie would have no sexuality and only violence it would have been rated PG-13. There is frequent sexual language and profanity but it is not stronger than in Jay and Silent Bob, which had the R-rating. Actually i think this movie's BBFC rating would be rather 15 than 18.

The animation style may is not as good as the series' animation style, but it is not as terrible as anyone says.

The plot starts with a very good idea - but it gets really weird and strange around half of the movie.

I think the movie is worth watching and i found it good, though i prefer the series.

Not as good as the show

Drawn Together the show is just nonstop twisted fun. This movie however, loses that fun carefree spirit of the show and is pretty much bitter and kind of a buzzkill. The characters have also suffered, they are not used to their fullest potential and are reduced to one note jokes. For example, even though Captain Hero is a necro in the original show, he also has other weird hobbies and crazy characteristics. Here, he just mushes up on a dead chick the whole time. And ironically, this movie is kinda preachy, something the original show has almost never been. Now there are some laughs to be had and a few good jokes, but overall it's just a disappointment and kinda bland from a show where anything goes.

Yeah alright

I mean yeah alright it was fine lol like I think it had some solid jokes but to be honest just not my type of humor like really not and maybe I can get away with a show in episodes but a movie is lowkey a lot. Like I think it's nice like the point isn't having a point cause you don't always need one but aside from that it's just a long episode of the show which isn't for me lol like I can't handle an hour of shock jock humor but I don't regret watching it I suppose. So if you like the show check it otherwise you could probably sit it out. I do think having the improved animation was kinda cool.

Seriously, just watch the series

Let me preface this review by stating the following: As someone who enjoyed Drawn Together back when it was still airing, I cannot, by the life of me, recommend this movie to anybody.

This movie is nothing more than a pathetic attempt from the creators to insult Comedy Central and, most prominently, South Park.

By far, the biggest sin of this movie is that it's just unfunny.

Now, I do consider the first two seasons of Drawn Together to be a great example of "juvenile humor" done right.

This isn't the case, however, because the writers of this movie only wanted to be a "shock show" instead of making jokes that actually land.

At the end of the day, The Drawn Together Movie is simply not funny. It's just petty, and leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth after watching it. Especially if you were a fan of the show.

Funny

The movie was a big FU to comedy central.

This show put South park to shame.

The point of the movie was how south park seems to get away with gross humor so long as they make a point.

Similar to how south park criticizes Family guy for using cutaways.

Drawn together criticizes south parks on it's manic pursuit of current events and politics.

While most people seem to hate on Simpsons and FG primarily because the shows are popular, south park is often given a free pass even though it's quality has gone down in years.

Not very funny

I liked the show a lot, but was disappointed in this movie. I chuckled a couple times but in general found it boring / headache inducing.

If I had to use one word to describe the apparent production attitude, it would be: lazy.

There are no words

I'm fairly indifferent to the show Drawn Together. It did exactly what it wanted to do during it's run: be as raunchy, offensive, and disgusting as a cartoon could be. That being said however, it did have some actually funny moments. But this movie is something else entirely. I've haven't been this disgusted and annoyed by a movie in quite some time. The main idea of this movie is that shows should be allowed to be as gross and shocking as they want to be, as if that's the only reason Drawn Together was cancelled. It also takes time to insult South Park by implying that the only difference between the two shows is that South Park has social commentary. Drawn Together, the difference between you and South Park is South Park is actually genuinely funny and has good writing. South Park has characters that can bring common sense into their crazy world. Drawn Together is a show of jerks being jerks to each other in a world of jerks with no balance to it whatsoever. There is a HUGE difference between you and South Park, and the fact that they even brought them into this train-wreck of a movie is an insult to Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The gross-out and gore in this is downright nauseating. Every minute, something bloody, pussy, and feces-related is being shoved in your face. Needless to say, don't watch this after eating. Or while eating. Or if you ever want to eat again. The animation is also awful. It's another production that thinks that using flash animation is an excuse to be lazy. Flash animation is a great tool. It allows you to animate faster so you can animate more to a degree that it can look better than traditional hand-drawn animation. For an example, look at seasons 4 and 5 of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Here, it's a stilted, uncanny mess that looks like it's going to break down at any second. Everything about this movie just angers me. It angers me that three years after being canceled, the creators of this show think they drop a big giant middle finger on their fans and expect them to like it. It angers me that they would have the audacity to compare themselves to a much better show. It angers me that these talented voice actors like Cree Summer, Jess Harnell, and Tara Strong had a part in this. No words are able to describe how terrible this movie is. It's terrible in every sense of the word. No plot, no effort, no substance, just pain. Plain, unadulterated pain. Avoid this movie like the plague. But seeing most fans of the show seem to hate this, you probably already are.

A bizarre, grotesque and dignified ending to the animated series

This movie gives the animated series a crazy and worthy end to the animated series with its paradoxes and breaking the fourth wall. It follows the humor and satire of the original series while leaving the reality show format aside and focusing more on its reason for existing. A film whose message is that making adult animation is not just social criticism, but part of creative freedom. With a far-fetched, unrealistic plot and pretty smooth animation, this movie is a great sendoff to what was another of the best adult animated series ever made in history. My final rating for this movie is 9/10.

Breaks the cardinal rule of comedy: it's just not funny.

I've never seen the TV series, and, after watching about half of this movie, I don't want to. I had heard of the TV series, but I thought it was some stupid kids' show. Then I heard it was more like an amusingly racist and homophobic show. I thought, "Well, that could be funny." The problem is that it's not.

I don't care if the show is anti-semitic, racist, homophobic, pornographic, misogynist and gross, as long as it has jokes that make me laugh. I never laughed once. It wasn't because I was too offended or I thought they went too far. No. I thought the jokes were very poorly written, like they were copying the most generic, derivative jokes they could find from 4chan and fark. They're cartoons, but they CURSE! Isn't that crazy?! And they sometimes show their GENITALIA! I've never heard of a cartoon like that before! And, get this, one of the characters is named JEW PRODUCER!!!! It's hilarious! Or not.

Unfortunately, that's the entire sum of their wit. The jokes never get any better, and the humor never becomes less generic. I've seen this all before, and I've seen it done better. I've also seen it done more offensively, so don't even try to complain that I was too offended or something.

If this had actually been funny, I'd have given it a higher rating, but the writers are pathetically lame. It's no wonder that their show was actually cancelled.

Probably the worst straight to DVD animated film ever

Wow, it has been a long time since I heard of this series and apparently for good reason. This film is the reason why most shows deserve to get canceled and left to die. I have watched the entire original series and was somewhat amused by it. The show was witty without a message and some points funny with over the top gross out humor. But this film took everything from the show that was somewhat good and screwed it up. I can't believe whoever made this movie was considering that the sales of this film could revive the show. The film contains even more over the top jokes and swearing simply because it is a direct to DVD film and doesn't have to worry about network censorship. This would be fine but all of the jokes in here are either unfunny or just plain disgusting. The show definitely had these kinds of jokes but they were tame considered to the things in here. I will admit that I am not a huge fan of the show and really hated how they ended it. But in my eyes the show had a good run and should have simply gone away in peace. Much better shows have been canceled at a short run and deserve a second chance, but not this show. Now this film is simply moronic in its approach and execution. The film constantly jumps around from scene to scene in a relentless manner and the story keeps getting more and more drawn out (no pun intended) along the way. Now the scene jumping would be fine if it had any sort of flow or order. But in this film they are so random that it becomes very hard to follow what is going on in the film. It does leave some interest as the viewer tries to figure out what is going on. But overall it gets old very fast. The story line in this film is pretty simple but way too convoluted for no reason. I simply didn't enjoy the movie as much as the show and felt that this was truly a half-hearted attempt to make a quick buck. I was really hoping for something more funny and entertaining of a send off in here. But it never came along and when I saw that ending I was really ticked. This film is not for everyone, even if you are a fan of the show. I definitely don't recommend it to people that are unfamiliar with the show as it would simply confuse them. The film gives no explanation at who the main characters are or why we should even care for them. These elements are from the show and only someone familiar with the show would be able to stomach the lame humor and fart jokes sprinkled through this movie.

My final review score is a 2 out of 10. The film simple didn't entertain me on any level and only reinforced all the things I hated about the show. Now if you enjoy lame jokes and over the top fart jokes then this may be a film you would want to RENT. But never buy it since it would only encourage the producers of this film to make another movie or revive the series. Everyone else should just avoid this film entirely.

Ehm, weird. Very weird!

Not being familiar with the "Drawn Together" stuff prior to this animated movie, I had no expectations. I just thought it was going to be some funny cartoon. It was rather funny, and good to see some spoof on cartoons (both old and new).

The story is as expected of such a movie, straight forward and hilarious.

Lots of really funny situations and dialogue in this animated movie. However, it should be said that there are things that might offend some viewers. So if you are of a delicate mind or mentality, perhaps this is not the movie to watch.

Now, for me at least, this was not a movie that I will be watching a second time. Sure it was funny the first time around, but I don't see the potential of additional viewings.

Not much of a brainer here, just in-your-face-and-over-the-edge animated comedy here. Good for an evening of brainless fun and relaxation.
