When Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered in 1987, fans of The Original Series were not sure what to expect. Previews seemed exciting, and with a whole new cast of characters aboard the newly designed Enterprise-d, surely new adventures awaited!

During the show’s 7-year run, The Next Generation explored a variety of themes and tones and created several episodes that viewers still discuss today, so let’s look back at three of the most impactful (and memorable) episodes from this franchise favorite!

1. “The Measure of a Man”

In “The Measure of a Man” (S02E09), the Enterprise visits Starbase 173, where Bruce Maddox, a Starfleet cyberneticist, approaches Data while on a tour of the ship. Data tells Picard that Maddox voted against him entering Starfleet Academy and does not consider him a sentient life form. Maddox reveals that he’s there to disassemble and examine Data, which may permanently affect his memories.

I recently found myself pulled into Offspring, an Australian dramedy about an obstetrician named Nina Proudman.

It’s the kind of show that sneaks up on you — equal parts messy, funny, raw, romantic, and emotionally devastating. But what struck me most wasn’t the characters or the love triangles or even Nina’s tangled family.

It was the birth stories.

The season two trailer for Black Snow teases that dark secrets run deep. AMC+ unveiled the official trailer along with announcing the much-anticipated second season will premiere on April 24, 2025. The season will kick off with the release of the first two episodes, with new episodes streaming on Thursdays.

Travis Fimmel reprises his starring role as Detective Cormack. Jana McKinnon (Bad Behaviour) returns as Zoe Jacobs. Season two also stars Megan Smart (Class of ’07), Alana Mansour (Erotic Stories), Dan Spielman (The Newsreader), Victoria Haralabidou (The Tourist), and Kat Stewart (Offspring).

“In season two, Fimmel reprises his role as Detective Cormack as he tackles two separate missing persons cases. One of Alien: Romulus' shocking reveals happened behind the scenes, when it was confirmed the Offspring sequence was filmed with a real actor wearing prosthetics. However, that creature's introduction was replaced with CGI after the film first screened with a test audience.

Alien: Romulus was a return to form for the franchise with its reliance on practical effects, and it showed in the visceral scenes of Xenomorphs and facehuggers. The Offspring blindsided fans in the final act, however; many suspected Kay (played by Isabela Merced) would birth an abomination but no one expected That. The creature has been compared to the Newborn from Alien: Resurrection, which used animatronics to flesh out the hybrid. A VFX head told Screen Rant that the Offspring was filmed using a real actor wearing prosthetics, save for two sequences.

Commenters under Netflix’s Apple Cider Vinegar trailer seem to think the teaser gives off real Inventing Anna vibes. Both shows focus on women who draw unsuspecting victims into their web of lies. In Apple Cider Vinegar, the liar at the series’ heart is an Australian influencer who lures followers in with claims she’s found a new way to battle cancer.

Sony Pictures (with some help from the film's leading men) have announced a Christmas 2025 release date for their upcoming Anaconda reboot, which may officially be titled The Anaconda.

Fan-favorites Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda 4; Tropic Thunder; School of Rock) and Paul Rudd ( Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania; Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire; Avengers: Endgame) have been enlisted to headline the feature, with Daniela Melchior (Fast X; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3; The Suicide Squad) co-starring. Alien: Romulus promised to bring the franchise back to its roots, and while it delivered on that, it still had time to reference Ridley Scott’s prequels thanks to a major Prometheus connection. With Romulus being the first Alien movie in seven years as well as the first Alien film to be produced following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, it only made sense for it to be the start of a new story rather than a direct sequel to Alien: Covenant. Set between the first and second movies in the Alien timeline, Romulus was very much a standalone film.

While there are plenty of Alien Easter eggs in Romulus, the movie works just fine for those who never watched any of the Alien movies. The fact that Alien: Romulus is getting a sequel only confirms that it was meant to be the start of a new chapter in the series...

The Offspring from Alien: Romulus is one of the most unique horror movie creations of the year but how much of that creation was CGI and how much was practical effects? Right up to its third act, Alien: Romulus is a really solid Alien movie with engaging characters, exhilarating action sequences, and terrifying jump scares. But in its final act, it goes to a whole other level of awesomeness with the reveal of the Offspring. After pregnant Kay injects herself with the Prometheus goo and the other survivors get back to the ship, she gives birth to a horrifying hybrid.

This years horror offerings have brought both underwhelming monster designs, like the glittery disco-ball demon from Apartment 7A, and unforgettably unholy creations, like Monstro Elisasue from The Substance. Alien: Romulus Offspring falls into the latter category; its one of the horror genres most frightening sights of the decade so far.

Kaitlyn Dever, who plays the much-hated Abby in season 2 of HBO's much-loved video game adaptation The Last of Us, will also appear in an upcoming Netflix series titled Apple Cider Vinegar, the streaming platform announced via press release. Dever is also listed as an executive producer of the project, which is expected to hit Netflix sometime in 2025.

Alien: Romulus has been reviewed quite well, hitting with both critics and audiences, on top of becoming the second highest-grossing film in the Alien franchise. The film is a certified hit, and has been seen as a return to form for the franchise after the divisiveness of the two prequel films.

One of the main points of discussion about the Alien films is naturally how they handle the titular alien creatures. Alien: Romulus introduced The Offspring to the franchise, a terrifying new monster with its own set of powers and abilities. By the time of Alien: Romulus' ending, the installment solidified it as one of the best in the series. Not only did it feature plenty of classic Xenomorph-based action-horror, but it also tied to the Alien prequel movies by expanding the lore of the franchise. This was done via the inclusion of the Prometheus Fire, a pathogen that led to the creation of The Offspring.

The Offspring is a new type of Xenomorph variant in the Alien franchise and provided a terrifying final obstacle for Rain to overcome in Alien: Romulus. However, The Offspring is very different from the final monsters of the past Alien movies. The reason for this links to its placement on the Alien movie timeline, as alluded to via the film's connections to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

The Offspring's reveal in Alien: Romulus is arguably one of its mind-blowing (if not divisive) moments. One concept artist revealed alternate designs for the creature, which looked nothing like the Engineers from Prometheus.

User Col Price shared photos of four mockups on X. "During Alien: Romulus, [Fede lvarez] encouraged us all to have a go at the hybrid. i dont really do creatures but had a go in nomad sculpt," it wrote. "I know fede actually loved these. great fun to do." The images revealed different versions of the Offspring, but all had definitive Xenomorph features; they stood almost upright, and one version brandished a tail. The designs were unmistakably Xenomorphs apart from their human nipples and chests.

Every entry in the Alien franchise features a special variation of the iconic Xenomorph, whether it be the warrior variant in James Cameron’s Aliens or the ‘protomorph’ created by David in Alien: Covenant.

Naturally, Alien: Romulus also shares its variant of a xenomorph dubbed the Alien Offspring, and to everyone’s surprise, he’s played by an internet celebrity.

Who Plays the Final Monster in Alien: Romulus?

For context, when Alien: Romulus hit theaters, the internet was immediately flooded with reactions and memes. One joke was that the final alien in the movie—which had some disturbing human features—looked a lot like Robert Bobroczky, an internet personality who had become a meme for being the tallest teenager in the world.

Composed by Benjamin Wallfisch, the music for the Fede Álvarez film — which takes place between the events of Ridley Scott’s 1979 “Alien” and James Cameron’s 1986 “Aliens” — arrives digitally on August 16. Golden Globe and Grammy-nominated Wallfisch drew upon the well-known scores for those two films from Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner, as well as Marc Streitenfeld’s music for Scott’s 2012 prequel “Prometheus.”

This month’s offerings are a perfect blend of black comedy, extreme horror, and martial arts action, all available through the expertly curated streaming service that has become a go-to for fans of alternative and cult classics.

This month exclusively on Arrow comes Offspring—a brutal and chilling adaptation of Jack Ketchum’s cult horror novel, directed by Andrew van den Houten. Offspring is a visceral exploration of primal fear, following a deadly clan of feral cannibals that have terrorised the North-east Coast since 1858. This harrowing tale centers on an unsuspecting family and their innocent baby girl, who become the target of these savages.

Director George Miller decided to continue the Mad Max franchise with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga… and while the movie got good reviews (like the 9/10 review from JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray), the worldwide box office numbers just barely passed the $168 million budget, so the Furiosa story was not something a lot of movie-goers were exceptionally eager to see on the big screen. It has been on VOD for a while now, and now we know when it’s going to start streaming: SuperHeroHype reports that Furiosa will be available to watch on the Max streaming service as of August 16th.

Directed by Miller from a screenplay he wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa has the following synopsis: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus.

Binge’s record-setting drama series Strife has begun shooting its second season.

The Asher Keddie-starring show became Australian streamer Binge’s biggest original series premiere last year, prompting execs to set up a writers’ room for Season 2, as we revealed in January. Production is now underway in Sydney.

The comedic drama follows Evelyn Jones (Keddie), a modern, imperfect woman and publisher, on her journey from lounge room blogger to becoming a force in women’s media. It was inspired by Australian media personality and journalist Mia Freedman’s memoir Work, Strife, Balance, and is written by Australian screenwriter Sarah Scheller (The Letdown).

Director George Miller decided to continue the Mad Max franchise with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga… but to tell the story, he had to recast the role of Furiosa. While the character was played by Charlize Theron, who wanted to return for Furiosa, in Fury Road, Miller felt de-aging technology isn’t convincing enough just yet for Theron to play a much younger version of the character, so he cast Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role for Furiosa. Theron has said that being left out of Furiosa was “a little heartbreaking” – but that hasn’t kept her from seeing or praising the finished film.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron confirmed that she has seen Furiosa and, “It’s amazing, it’s a beautiful film.“

Unfortunately, Theron and Taylor-Joy still haven’t had an opportunity to meet up and discuss their experiences playing the same character.

My knee-jerk reaction to the CGI-enhanced War Boy is one of apprehension. How large of a role does this character play in the film, and will their cartoonishness offset an otherwise incredible-looking film? I hope not. One of the more thrilling elements of Miller’s Mad Max series is the visual spectacle, and I worry the CGI-enhanced War Boy could be an “arrow to the knee.” I could be entirely off base, and I’m simply being paranoid for no good reason.

Sundance Now and AMC+ have released the first photos of Travis Fimmel (Vikings) and Jana McKinnon (Bad Behaviour) in the upcoming season of the Sundance Now Original Series Black Snow, currently filming in Queensland, Australia.

The new season of the six-part mystery-drama produced by Goalpost Pictures and set in the Glasshouse Mountains sees Travis Fimmel reprise his role as Detective Cormack.

AMC+ and Sundance Now released the first two photos from the upcoming second season of Black Snow as shooting is underway in Queensland. The photos feature returning series star Travis Fimmel (Vikings) as Detective Cormack and series newcomer Jana McKinnon (Bad Behaviour) as Zoe Jacobs.

Season one premiered in December 2022. Sundance Now hasn’t announced a launch date for the six-episode second season.
