Height of the Sky

The Height of the Sky is a very pleasing experience. It is an interesting story - told with much passion and honesty. The characters are believable as is the setting and costuming. All in all this is a wonderful independent film--the director shows much promise--I look forward to her next feature.

The story of Leola Jones and her family in "The Height of the Sky" kept my attention as her family fought poverty, despair, dominance, and illness. Surprises in the story line are revealed throughout the film. The film quality is outstanding - as is the location/setting. Congratulations for a job well done!

This is a humane and surprisingly subtle film about the secret understandings (and misunderstandings) that bind families and rural communities. Shot with poise and visual elegance (it looks great on a big screen), it offers an uncommonly rich and nuanced view of class and racial distinctions in the old South. While a few of the characters could have been more fully realized, the relationships between them are always strongly felt, and the film builds steadily toward a memorable sweep of longing and forgiveness. This film has lots of rewards for those who watch closely.

I saw this film at the 'Dances with Films' festival, and it was one of the highlights. Clinton shows a very well-developed eye for a first-time director; the film is beautifully shot and composed, and it unfolds in a languid, deliberate pace that's refreshing and perfect for the story being told.

A compelling story, beautifully shot, well paced, well conceived--one of the best small independents to be produced this year. The director, cast, and crew have created an amazing achievement on a tight budget. Looking forward to seeing more work from this director!
