Four Italian friends have a 15 year graduation reunion and decide to realize their old dream: a trip to California. Finally free of wives and girlfriends, they arrived in the US and rent a large car to take the road in search of adventure.

Four old friends, Lorenzo Colombo, Silvio Morandi, Giovanni and Tonino Sbarigia Castagna, they meet again in a rally for former students of the University of Bologna after fifteen years. Spent a riotous night, the four decide without the knowledge of their families to crown their old dream: the crossing of the United States from coast to coast.

John decides to go with friends unbeknownst to his wife (on holiday in Senegal with the children) and to avoid being discovered part with very little money and with the knowledge that they can use credit cards. Silvio, convinced communist, was initially left for the Crimea, but is dumped by his girlfriend and decides to join the gynecologist Tonino who came up with the idea of the trip (originally thought to a solitary journey).

Lorenzo, the richest of all, decide to finance the trip to his friends with his "hundreds of credit cards", but arrived in Miami he realizes that his housekeeper Filipino instead of credit cards has put in 24 hours cards game still sealed. Thus began a journey through the States made of old or luxury cars, running away from the police through the Grand Canyon, overnight stays in motels in the fourth category, housing by a senator of the right that is not entirely sympathetic to the communist Silvio and above that of many laughs They will rediscover the four friendship of their youth.

Once in Los Angeles three go to a hotel, where the Philippine deliver credit cards to Lorenzo. The 4 so they can live in the luxury of the states. Their grocer Christmas, met by chance in the United States during a show cowboy in the Wild West, has told the wife of John having seen the latter in the United States.
