In the Taylor Sheridan-created Western series "The Last Cowboy" (which you've probably never heard of), contestants compete for a place in the "Run for a Million" competition. Created by Sheridan and his business partner Amanda Brumley, the official site of the event states that it and the TV show are designed to "celebrate the growth of the Western lifestyle." That growth is arguably almost entirely the result of Sheridan's own efforts. The man has created a sprawling TV empire at the head of which sits "Yellowstone," the popular neo Western series which ended with its fifth and controversial final season in 2024. But while it may have ended, "Yellowstone" leaves...

John Malkovich nearly replaced Clint Eastwood in the best role of his lifetime before even becoming famous in Hollywood. In the early ’80s, the script of Unforgiven (which went by a different name then) had dropped into the lap of Francis Ford Coppola, who held it until 1985.
It was his choice to cast Malkovich as the lead of the Western, although Coppola’s film never came to be after his rights to the movie expired. While a lot of factors contributed to the film not being made in the early ’80s, the waning interest in Westerns was one of the biggest and most primary reasons.

Clint Eastwood has made all kinds of films throughout his career (even a gothic horror movie via Don Siegel's "The Beguiled"), but there might not be a career at all had he not been introduced to audiences worldwide as a star of Westerns. American television viewers got to know him over eight seasons of CBS' "Rawhide" through his steady portrayal of cowboy Rowdy Yates. When Eastwood got tired of television, he went to Spain to make an unusually violent Western called "A Fistful of Dollars" with Italian director Sergio Leone. The low-budget endeavor caught on first with European moviegoers, but, because the movie was so similar to Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo,...

Gene Hackman almost turned down one of the best roles of his career. When Clint Eastwood came to him with an offer to play the tough and cruel sheriff Bill Daggett in Unforgiven, Hackman didn’t jump at the chance.
He was worried. He had promised his family that he wouldn’t keep doing violent movies, and this one looked like it would break that promise.
Hackman’s career had already been filled with thrillers and dramas full of shootings and violence. Films like The French Connection, Uncommon Valor, Target, No Way Out, Mississippi Burning, and The Package all leaned on action and bloodshed.
His family wasn’t too happy about that path.

When Clint Eastwood was getting ready to make Unforgiven, he knew the movie needed a strong villain.
He wanted Gene Hackman to play Bill Daggett, the cruel sheriff who ruled the small town of Big Whiskey through fear and intimidation. Hackman thought it was a great role, but there was a problem. He had promised himself and his family that he wouldn’t take on any more violent roles.

We've written about Clint Eastwood's 1992 masterpiece, "Unforgiven," a lot because you can never talk enough about one of the greatest Westerns ever made. As someone who launched his career by starring in Westerns, Eastwood was ballsy enough to make one as a supposed farewell to the genre in which he deconstructed every single story beat and character trope these movies usually thrived on. "Unforgiven" is no ordinary genre piece, and Eastwood instantly recognized that, both as actor and director, after reading David Webb Peoples' script.
There are no real heroes in "Unforgiven." There are people with flaws, sins, regrets, and power greater than they deserve. Evil has many faces in this film,...

A Western icon if there ever was one, Kevin Costnerhas taken the genre to tremendous new heights, at a time when it was on the endangered list. He continues to put his might behind Westerns, having starred in the landmark series Yellowstone and having directed the Oscar-winning Dances With Wolves. He has invested a large portion of his personal wealth in the epic Horizon: An American Saga franchise. The first installment of the proposed five-film series was released to an underwhelming box office response last year, putting its future in jeopardy. An already-shot second film awaits a release. But Costner could afford to take these risks because of the goodwill that he has built for himself over the years, a goodwill that he first developed with the classic 1985 film Silverado, which is now available to stream for free on Tubi.

To any cinephile over 30, it doesn't feel right to call Clint Eastwood's "A Perfect World" underrated — and yet, if you ask Google, it'll tell you that the 1993 crime drama is considered to be just that. But if you're as familiar with the Hollywood legend's filmography (as a director) as I am, you damn-well know that this Kevin Costner-led gem is a stone-cold classic, easily taking a spot in the actor-director's top 10. But let's not get bogged down by personal rankings/preferences, and put them aside for a bit — there are more important things to talk about when it comes to this movie.
If you grew up as a child of divorce (raised primarily by a single parent) with an absent father like I did, "A Perfect World" speaks to your heart in a way that very few films can. It offers a fantasy that we as shy, abandoned,...

When you've worked as a film journalist for 25 years, you get used to people asking you to name the greatest movie all time. I always inform the inquirer that my default answer is Philip Kaufman's "The Right Stuff." A masterpiece that pretty much destroyed The Ladd Company, it's a soaring, hilarious, uplifting film that celebrates the best parts of the U.S.' cowboy mentality. It's also a brilliant combination of formats, a masterclass in the use of optical visual effects, and the shortest 192 minutes you'll ever spend watching a movie. Once I get this out of the way, I'll add, "But it depends on the day. Catch me walking out of a screening of Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws,' Spike Lee's 'Do the Right Thing,' or Ernst Lubitsch's 'To Be or Not to Be,' and that might be my answer."

Clint Eastwood debuted his final film last year with Juror #2, but nearly 10 years before he hung up his director’s camera for the final time, he helmed a critically acclaimed docudrama that’s returned to streaming charts. In 2016, Eastwood directed Sully, the disaster biopic starring Tom Hanks (Greyhound) and Aaron Eckhart (Olympus Has Fallen) that tells the story of Chesley Sullenberger, the famous pilot who landed his plane on the Hudson River to save the lives of his passengers and crew. Sully is currently streaming on HBO Max in the United States, but globally, it’s become one of the most popular movies on VOD nine years later. Sully earned scores of 85% from critics and 84% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $243 million at the box office against a $60 million budget.

I always loved the classic scene at the end of "A Fistful of Dollars" when Joe (Clint Eastwood) wanders back into town for a final shootout with the chief baddie and his henchmen. Ramón (Gian Maria Volonté) repeatedly guns him down, only to watch with disbelief as he rises again and reveals an improvised bulletproof vest beneath his poncho. That's a neat metaphor for the Western genre as a whole –- every time it gets consigned to Boot Hill, it staggers to its feet and keeps on shooting.

Ari Aster’s “Eddington” is here.
The movie, which pits a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) against his mayor (Pedro Pascal), set during the early days of the global pandemic, is fierce and raw. Considering this is from Aster, the director of “Midsommar,” “Hereditary” and “Beau is Afraid,” it is also confrontational and strange and deeply funny, with the action set at the precipice of the complete breakdown in communication that accompanied lockdown. (Indiewire called it “the first truly modern American Western.”)
And if you come out of “Eddington” looking for more offbeat westerns to watch, we’ve got seven that should fill that void nicely.
Paramount “Bad Company” (1972)
In the 1960s and 1970s, there was a slew of what were referred to as “acid westerns” – westerns that were set in the distant past but that embraced the counterculture of the period, including, of course, recreational drug use. (Hence the “acid” in “acid western.

To quote Roger Ebert, even if Clint Eastwood had never acted a day in his life, he'd still be a Hollywood legend. As a director, Eastwood is one of the industry's more prolific, having made 40 feature films since his debut, "Play Misty for Me" in 1971. His most recent film, "Juror #2," was released in 2024, meaning he was 93 when he completed work on it.
On screen, Eastwood's films tend to be mellow and slow-moving. He prefers a naturalistic aesthetic, paired with cloudy, ethereal photography. He works in all genres, from cop dramas to Westerns to romances to musicals (although few enjoyed his film adaptation of "Jersey Boys"). As an actor, Eastwood is best known for playing gun-toting badasses like The Man With No Name and Dirty Harry. As a director, his films tend to be mellower and more sensitive. What is the greatest three-movie run by an actor? Well, first, let me define what I mean by greatest, and what I mean by three-movie run. For my purposes, “greatest” is measured by an equal consideration of movie quality, performance quality, box office, and pop culture relevance. In other words, the films/performances have to be good and well-known. Now, a three-movie run just means three consecutive films in an actor’s filmography. I’m going based on release date, so sometimes having multiple films in a year removes an actor from contention.
So, a good three-movie run is not easy to pull off.. There are a lot of well-known actors who don’t even sniff this list. Here are a few actors you won’t see in the Top 10: Matt Damon, Ethan Hawke, Nicolas Cage, Matthew McConaughey Bradley Cooper. I tried to get a Jack Nicholson 1970’s run on the list,...

There are few interview subjects more candid, unpredictable, and downright entertaining than Quentin Tarantino. As far as filmmakers go, he exists on a saltily rarified plane with trash-talker supreme Orson Welles. He can be dishy, prickly and outrageously cocky, but as arguably the most influential filmmaker of his generation, he's at least earned the right to sound off on all things cinematic. And while I don't always agree with him, I appreciate that his opinions are coming from a fiercely sincere and deeply knowledgeable place.
While I enjoy Tarantino's brashness, I think he's at his very best when he goes to the mat for underappreciated film artists. Soon after he broke through with "Reservoir Dogs" in 1992 and established himself as an outspoken cinephile, he championed the films of Brian De Palma. You can think about John Cena in many ways, from being a protagonist and the proponent of hustle, loyalty, and respect inside the squared circle to a shadow of his former self. Still, John Cena is undeniably one of the greatest WWE superstars to have stepped into the ring.
John Cena was the face of the company for more than a decade. He was elevated during the Attitude Era and dominated the locker room until modern times. He is known for delivering some of the most remarkable matches in the company, which created a special memory in the hearts of the fans.
However, a series of totally different encounters he had over the years paint a completely different picture of the 17-time World Champion. These matches not only display the poor technical skills of the wrestlers involved but also portray bad storyline writing and complacency in detailing the rivalries Cena had during his career.

Are you a "Dirty Harry" fan or more of a Man With No Name kind of person? Whichever your preference, there's little doubt both are iconic characters in Clint Eastwood's filmography. I personally lean more towards the latter, although his laconic stranger in Sergio Leone's "Dollars Trilogy" is more of a vibe than a three-dimensional character. He's barely two-dimensional -- I mean, what do we know about him that the cool moniker doesn't already tell us? He loves rocking a poncho and prefers long, thin cheroots to cigarettes or pipes. He saves his right hand for shooting, and briefly mentions he's from Illinois in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." That's about as much of a backstory as we get. We don't even get much of an indication what is going on behind that famous squint. As Sergio Leone said of Eastwood's acting style, he had two...

If you're Clint Eastwood and you're thinking of leaving the action genre after decades of being one of the most recognizable and celebrated movie heroes of all time, you better make sure you go out with a bang. Luckily, Eastwood's last action movie role has a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, in fairness, the famed actor would go on to star in movies that had their share of action, but 1993's "In the Line of Fire" felt like the last fully-fledged Clint Eastwood actioner, and it's a doozy.
After winning Best Picture and Best Director at the 1993 Oscars for "Unforgiven," Eastwood returned to the director's chair with "A Perfect World," his highly anticipated directorial follow-up to "Unforgiven" which debuted in November that same year. The Kevin Costner-led crime drama was yet another critical hit for Eastwood, but it wasn't quite the box office success that "In the Line of Fire,...

It's not easy to make a name for yourself in the world of film and television, especially when everyone else is trying to do the same thing. Some talent, whether they be actors, writers, or filmmakers, get lucky in their first few projects, while others won't get to see the fruits of their industry labor until much further down the line. Clint Eastwood technically made his big screen debut in 1955 in an uncredited role in "Revenge of the Creature," yet kept finding himself in bit parts over the next few years. Even "Rawhide," the television western career gig that got his foot in the door, would take up seven and a half years of his life on CBS. But not only would the experience of starring in those eight seasons serve as a testing ground as for his directorial sensibilities, it would also prompt him to travel to Spain, where...

Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" is one of the most highly revered Westerns of all time, a gritty and grounded take on the horrors of surviving the anarchy of the Old West. It's one of Eastwood's best films as both an actor and a director, and there really isn't another film like it that fully digs into its themes. But there is another Western that is just as fantastic, and it stars another Western movie legend.
If there's another actor as tied to the Western genre as Eastwood, it's Kurt Russell, who has starred in a whole bunch of fantastic Westerns over the years. And one of the best of the best is "Tombstone," which stars Russell as real-life lawman Wyatt Earp. It's a terrific drama with absolutely stunning cinematography, featuring views of gorgeous Arizona vistas, and it does deal with some of the same difficult life-or-death brutality as "Unforgiven,...

Clint Eastwood's reputation as a legendary big screen tough guy persists even while he's managed to become one of the most respected directors in Hollywood. When we think of the man who directed "Million Dollar Baby" and "Unforgiven" we also can't help but think of the Man with No Name and "Dirty" Harry Callahan. But the actor played many more diverse characters than he gets credit for and took on several roles that casual fans of the man might not expect.
In 1978, for example, Eastwood made the then-controversial decision to star in "Every Which Way but Loose" opposite a trained orangutan named Manis. The action-comedy saw him and his co-star travel across the United States in search of a woman Eastwood's character has convinced himself is his soulmate — and wouldn't you know it, the movie was a hit, spawning the 1980 sequel "Any Which Way You Can," which saw Eastwood...

Clint Eastwood not watching Brokeback Mountain effectively confirmed that the movie wouldn’t win the Oscar for Best Picture, according to its co-writer Diana Ossana. Brokeback Mountain had been the favorite to scoop the biggest prize of the night at the Academy Awards in 2006, amid criticism from conservative elements of the media and film industry about its portrayal of LGBTQ+ themes.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, the writer who scripted one of Heath Ledger’s best movies alongside Larry McMurtry recounted meeting Eastwood at the Oscar nomination party that year. According to Ossana, director Paul Haggis, whose film Crash ultimately won Best Picture that year, warned her that the legendary Western star hadn’t seen her movie. She recalled:

Happy 50th anniversary Jaws. You are undoubtedly one of not only the greatest summer blockbusters of all time but a landmark horror film that lives on in both its quotable lines and music that nearly everyone will know when heard but also its legacy. While we have covered the series nearly to death in almost every fashion possible, I don’t think we have looked at what it did for the movie world as much as we could. While there are knockoffs that try to directly capitalize on the very name that built the foundation, looking at you Cruel Jaws/Jaws 5, there are so many wonderful copycats that were produced that live on in their own special ways. My plan is to cover a few of them over the next couple months and while there are many to discuss either on the merits of so bad they are good or genuine uniqueness,...

It’s been two decades since Brokeback Mountain first hit our screens, breaking hearts and barriers across the global box office. But sadly, despite being such a hit and winning most best film prizes of the awards season, the film shockingly lost the Academy Award in 2006, to Crash. Well, thanks to co-writer Diana Ossana’s recent revelation, we finally have a clearer picture of when and why its Best Picture hopes slipped away.
On the film’s 20th anniversary, Diana Ossana recalled a gut-punch moment that made her realize the odds had turned. It happened at a party for Oscar nominees, when she learned Clint Eastwood hadn’t even seen Brokeback Mountain before voting ended. For Ossana, the answer was clear: homophobia. Despite packed theaters and audiences leaving in tears, Ossana realized that the film lost because of the biases that lingered beneath the surface of the industry

“Brokeback Mountain’s” Oscar-winning co-writer Diana Ossana recently marked the film’s 20th anniversary with an interview in The New York Times, in which she revealed the exact moment she realized Ang Lee’s acclaimed romance film would not win the Oscar for best picture despite being the far-and-away frontrunner of the 2005-2006 awards season.

MCU star Chris Evans cited Tombstone as one of his top four favorite movies. A Western from director George P. Cosmatos, the 1994 film is a star-studded ensemble movie featuring the likes of Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Bill Paxton, and, of course, Western icon Sam Elliott. In fact, it's widely regarded as one of the best movies for several of the actors involved in the film, such as Russell and Kilmer.
Set in 1879, Tombstone boasts a cast of characters comprised of a slew of historical figures, from notorious outlaws like Johnny Ringo and William “Curly Bill” Brocious to legendary Western heroes like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Despite juggling a massive cast of actors, not to mention surprising appearances from Charlton Heston and Harry Carey Jr., Tombstone succeeds in being an entertaining Western and a longtime favorite of many – including Chris Evans.

Clint Eastwood is one of those Hollywood legends who never fit neatly into a box. Like, take his political ideologies for example—he has certainly supported Republicans before, but then, calling him a hardcore Republican or a Democrat would miss the bigger picture. That’s why he comes off as a self-professed socially liberal, fiscally conservative libertarian.
And somehow, that political mindset shapes his movies too. From Unforgiven to Million Dollar Baby, his films often show messy people in complicated situations, making tough choices that go way beyond party lines. And that’s exactly what we see, once again in Juror No. 2, where his political views help craft an ending that’s morally tangled and undeniably human.

Mads Mikkelsen’s 97% Rated Only Western Is Dominating Streaming That Would Make Clint Eastwood Proud
Mads Mikkelsen is known for his versatility across different genres, which is likely why the actor has only appeared in one Western movie. In 2023, Mikkelsen appeared in the historical drama movie The Promised Land, which is considered a Western despite being set in 18th-century Denmark.
The period drama film with a 97% rating is dominating streaming charts, and its success would only make Clint Eastwood proud, given the myriad similarities between one of his most iconic Westerns and the Mikkelsen-led movie. Here is why The Promised Land is arguably one of the best Western movies you slept on and why you should stream it now.

If there’s one guy in Hollywood who can direct the scene, nail the line, and ride off like it’s just another Tuesday, it’s Clint Eastwood. For over fifty years, he’s been doing double duty, calling the shots behind the camera while stealing scenes in front of it. Most actors try directing once or twice. Clint? He basically built a second (and third) career out of it.
From dusty Westerns to sharp political thrillers to quiet emotional gut-punches, Eastwood has told stories his way. Stripped-down, no-frills, and always a little dangerous. And let’s be real, the man turned grumpy old age into an Oscar-nominated vibe.
So whether you have been following him since Dirty Harry or you are just wondering why your uncle has three Unforgiven DVDs, here is the full list of films where Clint Eastwood did not just star, he ran the whole show.

When director Richard Gray set out to make his first Western, he didn’t just scout a location — he built one. Nestled north of Yellowstone National Park in Montana’s rugged Paradise Valley, Yellowstone Film Ranch is a Western backlot styled after a late-1800s gold rush town, set against the striking backdrop of Emigrant Peak. Like the Old West backlots of the studio era, such as Arizona’s Old Tucson and Colorado’s former Buckskin Joe, Yellowstone Film Ranch was built to bring authenticity to stories of the American West.
Gray emerged as a runner-up in Project Greenlight Australia — the Aussie instalment of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s popular documentary series — and built a steady career helming thrillers like Mine Games and Sugar Mountain. An episode of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, featuring the windswept charm of Livingston, Montana, eventually pointed him toward a new frontier.

Rick and Morty, the animated science fiction sitcom, is exceeding expectations once again as it continues its run, with its eighth season currently airing a new episode every week. But while the alcoholic sociopath-scientist and his grandson persist with their absurd intergalactic adventures, the recently aired episode seems to have deceived us.
While the respective episode in the talk didn’t hesitate to give Clint Eastwood a tribute with its title, it seems to have done more than just that. This is because, while the episode’s title was named after a classic Western from the filmmaker, it appears to have parodied one of his other flicks; notably, the one that inspired Yellowstone: 1992’s Unforgiven.

Clint Eastwood is developing a new movie despite widespread rumors that he would retire from directing. One of the most legendary Hollywood figures of all time, Eastwood started his career starring in several spaghetti Westerns during the 1960s before adding directing to his arsenal, going on to helm movies like 1992's Unforgiven and 2004's Million Dollar Baby, both of which won Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture. At 94 years of age, Juror #2 was rumored to be Clint Eastwood's last movie.
However, it doesn't seem like he will be retiring anytime soon. According to a new interview with the German publication Kurier, Clint Eastwood is "in pre-production for another film project" and has been "seen busily bustling around the Warner Bros. studio lot with a bushy white beard." Eastwood says that aging has made him a better filmmaker because of the experience he has gained, and unlike some directors, he hasn't lost his creative touch.
