A young couple inherits a farm. Hoping that the rural location might help to patch up their strained marriage, they move into it, only to be confronted by the supernatural forces that inhabit it.

An aura of mystery and tales of supernatural activity surrounds Crowhaven Farm, when it comes into the possession of Ben and Maggie Porter, a couple moving to the farm to try for a chance to save their troubled marriage. Ben and Maggie Porter inherit an old farmhouse called Crowhaven Farm. Almost from the beginning, Maggie senses there is something strange about the house. She can't understand why she feels as if she's been there before.

The Porters are hoping that a change might help their strained marriage. Ben sets up his art studio in the barn and Maggie gets a job in town. They begin to make friends in the community and learn that their house was once occupied by Margaret "Meg" Carey, who was killed for practicing witchcraft. She was placed under a board and heavy stones were heaped on it until she was dead. Maggie begins to have nightmares that she is Meg Carey. An elderly neighbor, Mr. Cheever, tells her that witchcraft is still practiced in the community. Maggie asks her new friends about this and they laugh at the very idea.

One night after working late, Maggie's car won't start. Her boss, Kevin Pierce, gives her a ride home. He is obviously interested in Maggie but she rebuffs him. Ben is furious that she accepted a ride from Kevin. Far from healing, the Porters' marriage seems to be getting worse.

Dr. Terminer, the local physician, has a favor to ask of the Porters. He has an elderly patient, Mercy Lewis, who is terminally ill. She is leaving behind a ten-year-old niece, Jennifer, and needs someone to take her in. Since the Porters have no children, Dr. Terminer thinks they are the perfect couple. But Ben and Maggie are reluctant. Before they can give the doctor a definite answer, word comes that Mercy has committed suicide. The Porters agree to let Jennifer come to live with them.

Jennifer seems unusually mature for a ten year old and Maggie becomes uneasy around her. Mr. Cheever visits while Ben and Maggie are gone. He has come to tell them something very important about their house. Jennifer steals his cane and the next day he dies from a fall. The Porters wonder what Mr. Cheever had wanted to tell them and Maggie feels they could be in danger.

Another night of Maggie working late results in Jennifer climbing in bed next to Ben. But he rebuffs her advances and realizes that they will have to find her another home.

To Maggie's delight, she becomes pregnant. Ben's career is taking off; his paintings are selling and he is approached about having a showing of his work in Boston. Despite Jennifer's inappropriate behavior, she continues to live with the Porters. By now Maggie is repulsed by her.

One night, Maggie feels restless and decides to take a walk. She hears voices and singing in a remote part of the woods. In a clearing she finds many of her new friends participating in a strange ceremony. The shock of seeing this brings on premature labor. Dr. Terminer delivers her of a healthy son. He warns Maggie that she must stay in bed and avoid excitement.

Ben's art show is scheduled and Maggie begs him not to leave her alone. He promises to return the next day. But Maggie has another dream about Meg Carey. Convinced that she and her baby are in danger, she takes him and tries to leave the house. But Jennifer and her aunt (who is not dead after all) are waiting in the living room, wearing Puritan costumes. Coldly they inform her that she is really Meg Carey reincarnated. Maggie runs from the house and hitches a ride with her friend Felicia. But then she notices that Felicia is also wearing a costume. Maggie is driven to a field and told to get out. All of her new friends are witches and warlocks, and mean to destroy her. She begs them not to hurt her baby and is told they have no quarrel with him.

A heavy board is laid across Maggie and stones are brought. Jennifer tells her if she will give up Ben's wedding ring, she will live. In a previous life, Jennifer was in love with Ben. At first Meg refuses but finally agrees after the weight of the stones is crushing her. Jennifer takes the ring and smiles. Later, Maggie regains consciousness. Every one is gone, the board and stones are gone, and her baby is lying next to her, unharmed.

Ben returns to Crowhaven Farm late that night, having left his showing early because he was so worried about Maggie. No one is home but Jennifer. She tells him that Maggie is having an affair with Kevin Pierce. An enraged Ben goes to Kevin's apartment and shoots him. On the way home, he comes across the coven and is killed after falling from a rock. The next day, his body is discovered. The coroner remarks on an oddly shaped mark on Ben's back, saying it looks almost like a tiny hoof print, a sign of witchcraft. Dr. Terminer smiles broadly and says he has never heard of any witches in the area.

Maggie and her son move back to New York. Several months later, while she is wheeling his stroller through Central Park, she meets a police officer on horseback. He smiles at her and gets off his horse to tie the baby's shoe. Suddenly Maggie notices that he ties the bow in exactly the same way as Ben. The officer gets back on his horse and leaves, calling to Maggie that he will see her again. Maggie is left to wonder if the officer could possibly be a reincarnation of Ben.
