- Alice (Beecham), a single mother, works as a senior plant breeder at a corporation engaged in developing new species. Against company policy, she secretly takes one home as a gift for her teenage son, Joe (Connor). They christen it 'Little Joe' but as it grows, so too does Alice's suspicion that her new creations may not be as harmless as their nickname suggests.
- Alice Woodard is a passionate scientist and single mother. She works for the biotechnology company Planthouse Technologies, which specializes in the development of new plant species. Alice's latest creation, called "Little Joe", is a purple flower whose scent releases the hormone oxytocin and is supposed to make people happier. In return, the owners must take good care of the plant, give it a warm place, feed it properly and talk to it. Alice and her assistant Chris intend to use the plant as an antidepressant, and they expect Little Joe to be a great success at the next plant fair. However, more and more signs emerge that the plant is not entirely harmless. People and animals who have come into contact with its scent seem to have changed and become estranged from those close to them. Contrary to the company's guidelines, Alice takes one of the plants home as a gift for her son Joe. He soon seems to be infected by the scent of the flower and becomes apathetic towards Alice. When she can no longer tell who is under Little Joe's spell and who is not, Alice has to open up to the truth.—ARD
