Splinter (2008) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
As I get older, I find it harder and harder to find horror movies from the 80s and even 90s to qualify for a recommendation towards a best horror movie you never saw. First is the influx of all these great companies like Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, and Severin Films, not to mention Kino and Scream Factory, who pull out all the stops finding the most hidden of hidden gems to clean up and release. Second, we have a ludicrous amount of streaming services, and the free ones typically can find these smaller movies that cost way less to license a streamable version. Between my generation recommending everything under the sun to their coworkers, friends, and family as well as newer generations being willing to stream something if its easy to find, the 80s is well represented, for better and for worse. The 2000s are Chock Full of movies that came...

Top Israeli Director Talya Lavie Sets Drama ‘Seven Eyes,’ About Female Idf Soldiers During Oct. 7 Hamas Attack (Exclusive)
Image
Top Israeli director Talya Lavie is developing “Seven Eyes,” a feature film based on the gripping story of the female lookout soldiers who were based at the Israel-Gaza border on Oct. 7, when Hamas killed more than 1,200 Israeli civilians.

Entirely staffed by women, that Idf “lookout” unit is stationed by the Nahal Oz Outpost in Southern Israel, near the village which was decimated by Hamas. In the months preceding the attack, these female soldiers consistently reported suspicious activities, indicating that Hamas terrorists were preparing for an attack, said Lavie, an alumna of the Sundance Directors and Screenwriters Lab.

Of the 24 lookout soldiers who were stationed in Nahal Oz on Oct. 7, 15 were killed during the attack, seven were abducted by Hamas into Gaza and two survived. Lavie said the film will follow fictional characters but will be based on true events.

In “Zero Motivation,” one of Israel’s biggest B.O. hits of all times,...

Sympathy For The Devil: Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know
Image
2023 is Nicolas Cage’s year of horror movies, as he's already played Count Dracula in Renfield and will star in the upcoming Sympathy for the Devil. While Renfield delved into supernatural elements, Sympathy for the Devil focuses on psychological horror with Cage as an ominous carjacker who bears the actor's trademark over-the-top mannerisms. The movie is helmed by Israeli director Yuval Adler whose previous work includes the internationally co-produced thriller The Operative and the American thriller drama The Secrets We Keep. Newcomer Luke Paradise pens the screenplay for Sympathy for the Devil, which promises to be a roller coaster ride full of road movie genre tropes and bleak humor.

With the potential to offer one of Cage's wildest movie performances, Sympathy for the Devil’s major selling point is its leading star. But beyond the casting, the movie also offers an atmospheric, nerve-inducing journey with its premise of a carjacking...

Sympathy For The Devil Trailer: Nicolas Cage Is A Terrifying Carjacker
Image
Terrifying carjacker Nicolas Cage takes family man Joel Kinnaman on a wild ride in the new trailer for Sympathy for the Devil. Fresh off giving the most meta performance of his career in last year's The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Cage started out 2023 by sinking his teeth into the role of immortal vampire Dracula in the horror-comedy Renfield. Unfortunately, the much-hyped Renfield failed to draw much blood at the box office, grossing just $25 million worldwide.

Following up the relative disappointment of Renfield, Cage returns to more familiar ground for his latest effort, playing a manic carjacker opposite The Suicide Squad star Kinnaman in the thriller Sympathy for the Devil, which just dropped its first trailer via Rlje Films.

In the clip, Kinnaman is seen driving to the hospital to be with his wife as she gives birth, but is suddenly waylaid by a gun-toting Cage, who coldly orders the expectant father to "drive.

The Match Factory will launch sales on the debut film by Ehab Tarabieh, “The Taste of Apples Is Red,” at the Toronto Film Festival, where the film will be premiering in the Discovery section.

The Secrets We Keep Trailer: Noomi Rapace, Chris Messina & Joel Kinnaman Lead Post-wwii Thriller

Following last year’s drama The Operative starring Diane Kruger, director Yuval Adler is back with another nail-biter of a thriller. The Secrets We Keep finds Noomi Rapace is seeking revenge as Maja, a woman adjusting to post-World War II life in the American suburbs with her husband (Chris Messina). Upon arriving, she suspects her neighbor (Joel Kinnaman) of having committed horrific war crimes against her and kidnaps him, drawing herself further into her past and pushing her to her limits.

Also starring She Dies Tomorrow director Amy Seimetz, Bleecker Street will release the film next month and the first trailer and poster have arrived. With the ensemble looking to bring a palpable intensity to the 1950s suburbia setting, hopefully this is a stand-out thriller to kick off the unconventional fall season that is fast approaching.

The Secrets We Keep Trailer Locks Joel Kinnaman & Noomi Rapace in a Tale of Revenge
Image
Bleecker Street has released a new trailer for The Secrets We Keep. The Post-World War II thriller features a cast led by Noomi Rapace and Joel Kimmaman. It promises to be a dark, emotional drama. Even though this is dealing with elements of the war, as we can see from the trailer, this is far from your average war movie.

The trailer quickly lives up to the promise of the title, with Noomi Rapace revealing a big secret to her husband. We then get a sense of some of the horrors her character, along with her family, endured during the war. It then becomes a twist-filled tale of revenge, with a supposed former German soldier being held accountable for his alleged misdoings. Assuming he is indeed the guy he's suspected of being, which is up for debate. It's a tangled web that provides a seemingly unique take on the WWII sub-genre.

Keshet & HBO’s ‘Rise And Kill First’ Sets Yuval Adler To Write/Direct Limited Series On Hunt For Hezbollah Co-Founder Imad Mughniyeh By Mossad & CIA
Exclusive: Rise and Kill First, set up last year to be developed into a limited series by Keshet and HBO based on the bestselling Ronen Bergman book about the secret history of Israel’s targeted assassinations, has set Yuval Adler to write and direct its first season. The focus: an unprecedented joint operation of the CIA and Mossad to assassinate Imad Mughniyeh – a Hezbollah co-founder who, with the exception of Bin Laden, topped the CIA and FBI Most Wanted list.

Mughniyeh was purportedly behind dozens of terrorist operations, including the embassy and barracks bombings in Lebanon, multiple kidnappings of Americans, hijacking of airlines, and attacks in Buenos Aires, including the bombing the Israeli Embassy there. U.S. intelligence officials accused him of killing more United States citizens than any other man prior to the September 11 attacks. He was also a close ally of General Suleimani, working with him to export...

Sherlock Season 5 Might Not Happen For A Few More Years
If one thing’s certain, it’s that the future of BBC’s Sherlock is anything but clear. When it first premiered all the way back in 2010, the series – which stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman – garnered critical acclaim for its writing, visual design, and strong direction from creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, both of whom are well-known for their work on another BBC show: Doctor Who.

But despite a massive fanbase and soaring popularity, the series began to trip over itself. While the first three seasons were praised by most, the fourth didn’t enjoy the same success, thanks in part to a finale which many argue was convoluted, contrived, and poorly written. That being said, despite the most recent season’s stumbles, fans have been clamoring for the show to return. Unfortunately, however, things aren’t as simple as they seem, and the BBC itself still won...

Julianne Moore in The English Teacher (2013)
The Operative Review: Israeli Espionage Thriller Underwhelms
Julianne Moore in The English Teacher (2013)
The Operative is an espionage thriller that strikes at the heart of a brewing global conflict. A detached woman is recruited by the Israeli Mossad to infiltrate Iran's nuclear weapons program. Based on the Hebrew novel "The English Teacher", by former intelligence officer Yiftach Reicher-Atir, the stark narrative shows the dark and conflicted loyalties of spycraft. The Operative is not a testosterone fueled, 007-esque babes and gadgets fantasy. The film is taut and realistic in parts, but oddly uncompelling overall. The pieces were there for a gripping story, but The Operative leaves the viewer cold.

German actress Diane Kruger stars as Rachel Currin, an Israeli spy that mysteriously went rogue. Martin Freeman co-stars as Thomas, her former handler who was ousted by the Mossad. Thomas receives a call from Rachel after a year of no contact. She speaks in code and hangs up abruptly. When Thomas reports her call to his former colleagues,...

Diane Kruger Goes Undercover in the U.S. Trailer for ‘The Operative’
Writer-director Yuval Adler returns to the spy genre that he first visited with his 2013 film Bethlehem, with The Operative starring Diane Kruger and Martin Freeman. Yuval’s newest film, based off the novel The English Teacher by Yiftach Reicher Atir, sees Kruger’s Rachel as a Mossad spy gone rogue while working undercover in Tehran, posing as an English teacher while also looking into Iran’s nuclear program. Freeman co-stars as Rachel’s handler Thomas, who travels from Germany to Tehran attempting to track down Rachel.

While the film didn’t get the best response out of the Berlin Film Festival, where it premiered earlier this year (read our review here), Kruger is a gifted actress and when given the right material, she can be phenomenal (see 2017’s In the Fade). Also co-starring Cas Anvar (Room) as Rachel’s target who she becomes romantically involved with. Watch the trailer below:

The Operative opens on Aug.

Diane Kruger Goes Undercover in Official Trailer for 'The Operative'
"I just decided... I wasn't going to be afraid." Vertical Entertainment has debuted the official Us trailer for the spy thriller The Operative, the latest from Israeli filmmaker Yuval Adler. This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, but hasn't played at any other festivals. In the film, Diane Kruger stars as a woman trained and recruited to work as an undercover spy for Israel's intelligence agency the Mossad. She is sent to work in Tehran, but ends up in a love affair with her target, making everything more complex than it should to be. The cast includes Martin Freeman as her handler, Cas Anvar as her target, along with Rotem Keinan, Yohanan Herson, and Kate Nichols. This seems like it should be a slick spy thriller, alas it's a film without much to say, that meanders most of the time and ends before there's any conclusion. Here's...

Terrence Malick in La Ligne rouge (1998)
Germany Strengthens Foreign Ties
Terrence Malick in La Ligne rouge (1998)
With more international co-productions in cinemas than ever before and a new crop of high-profile titles this year, Germany’s renown as fertile ground for foreign filmmakers continues to soar.

The number of German-backed cross-border titles in local theaters rose 30% last year to 98 — the most ever — and the trend looks set to continue. This year a slew of German co-productions are vying for Cannes’ Palme d’Or, among them Terrence Malick’s historical drama “A Hidden Life”; Jessica Hausner’s sci-fi thriller “Little Joe”; Marco Bellocchio’s mafia pic “The Traitor”; Corneliu Porumboiu’s “The Whistlers”; and Elia Suleiman’s “It Must Be Heaven.”

Key to the country’s filmmaking allure is a generous system of federal and regional funding sources and a dynamic film industry geared toward international co-production.

Leading companies include Pallas Films, whose credits include “It Must Be Heaven” and Sergey Dvortsevoy’s “Ayka”; Pandora Film, co-producer...

Diane Kruger in The Operative (2019)
Berlin Film Review: ‘The Operative’
Diane Kruger in The Operative (2019)
“Operation ‘Business As Usual'” is the name of the undercover mission assigned to Mossad agent Rachel Currin in Tehran: a knowingly ironic label for a challenging undertaking that gets considerably less orthodox the longer it goes on. Less knowingly, it would also be an appropriate title for “The Operative,” a proficient but unsurprising espionage thriller from Israeli writer-director Yuval Adler that offers another well-fitted showcase for Diane Kruger’s stern resolve as a performer. Rather like Fatih Akin’s recent “In the Fade,” it’s an otherwise fairly impersonal genre piece that hangs on its leading lady’s every word, move and steel-eyed glance. Kruger’s presence will secure international interest in this out-of-competition Berlinale premiere, with multi-platform distribution a likely part of its business plan.

A few episodes of the USA Network series “Shooter” aside, this is Adler’s first work as a director since his 2013 debut “Bethlehem,” a taut,...

Diane Kruger Trained With an Israeli Security Force for ‘The Operative’
Diane Kruger
Diane Kruger thought her flair for language would make her a natural fit for the lead role in Israeli helmer Yuval Adler’s spy thriller “The Operative,” which world-premiered out of competition at the Berlin Film Festival on Sunday.

“When I first read [the script], I thought immediately that this is a project that I really want to pursue,” Kruger said at a press conference alongside Adler and co-stars Martin Freeman and Cas Anvar. “The character kind of talked to me. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I could be a Mossad agent.’”

To put that theory to the test, the German actress underwent five days of training with the Israeli security force to prepare for her role as a woman recruited by the Mossad to work undercover in Iran.

But it wasn’t a high-stakes story of international intrigue that drew her to the character of Rachel, a woman seemingly at home everywhere and nowhere at once.

'The Operative': Film Review | Berlin 2019
Diane Kruger
Starring as a woman unraveling while struggling to make sense of the deaths of her husband and son, Diane Kruger showed she could carry a movie in Fatih Akin's In the Fade. But she needs more textured material than she's given in this choppy espionage thriller that casts her as a Westerner making bold moves to disentangle herself and right a wrong after years of undercover Mossad activity, pulling in Martin Freeman as her former handler to help facilitate her exit. Writer-director Yuval Adler connects the dots of the convoluted plot with reasonable clarity, but The Operative only intermittently builds ...
