Synopsis

  • This film starts with Haruka Nozaki who just recently moved to a new school along with her parents and little sister Shoko. Nozaki is an outcast as she is regularly bullied at school by her classmates and her teacher Kyoko Minami does nothing as she is too timid and cowardly herself.

The group of bullies is led by Taeko Oguro who is idolized by Rumi Sayama, who follows her orders without fail. They tease her and write humiliating words on her desk, although Nozaki doesn't let it get to her. Nozaki herself is shown to have a close relationship with a classmate Mitsuru Aiba and are shown together most of the time. Rumi is revealed to have been following Taeko out of fear of being bullied again as she was spared after Nozaki transferred to their class and became their new target.

Eventually her fears are confirmed as Taeko gives Rumi a forced haircut after Nozaki was home sick, that makes her look ridiculous. Nonetheless, she feigns enjoying it in order to stay on Taeko's good side for the time being. Angered that she was humiliated because Nozaki stayed home that day, she decides to get back at her. Rumi asks Taeko what they should do to get back at Nozaki, she initially doesn't respond but after being annoyed by her constant pestering, Taeko carelessly tells Rumi to burn Nozaki's house down.

But unbeknownst to Taeko, Rumi decides to take this seriously and recruits several of the bullies and other classmates to help her. Meanwhile, Nozaki is shown with Mitsuru, the two decide to hang out after school and deepen their bond with each other. The two are shown walking home together at night when they notice two of their classmates, Risako Kato and Yuri Mishima walking together clearly distressed by something. When they make eye contact with Nozaki they quickly scurry away, Nozaki looks toward the direction of her home and to her shock notices smoke and flames coming from where her house is.

Nozaki and Mitsuru quickly rush to her house and to their shock and horror see her house engulfed in flames. Nozaki distressed and worried about her family, especially her little sister Shoko, attempts to run into the fire to try and save them. She is held back by Mitsuru who goes in instead to try and save her family. The firefighters arrive and at the same time, Mitsuru exits the burning house with Shoko who has been burned beyond all recognition, but is barely alive. Nozaki heartbroken collapses in shock and grief as her whole world has been destroyed in a single instant.

Nozaki is shown at the hospital while her grandfather checks on his son's and daughter-in-law's remains. Nozaki's sister Shoko is shown heavily bandaged and on a ventilator, barely clinging to life, when Nozaki's grandfather arrives and comforts her. The next day, Taeko is shown leaving for school, when her mother tells her about the house fire and is visibly startled but remains calm and heads for school. Some of the bullies at school are shown talking about what happened while laughing about it. Rumi in particular tells Taeko about what they did, only for her to stab Rumi's hand with her pen and tells her to leave.

However, to everyone's surprise Nozaki shows up for school, despite what happened to her family. After class, in the hallway Rumi mocks Nozaki for happened to her and refers to the house fire as a barbecue. However, Nozaki simply glares at her and walks away, leaving Rumi frightened as it is apparent that Nozaki knows that she was responsible for the fire. Rumi knowing how dangerous it would be for Nozaki to expose them, hatches a plan to kill her and recruits three of her classmates to help her.

After school, Rumi lures Nozaki to the garbage pit that is right behind the school, where Risako Kato, Yuri Mishima, and Yoshie Tachibana are waiting. Rumi prepares to kill her as she also brought some gasoline, but is forced to leave as she was called by their teacher Ms. Minami. She tells Yoshie to finish the job and leaves, Yoshie proceeds to taunt Nozaki and shoves her to the ground. But this proves to the last straw for Nozaki, who proceeds to grab a nail and stabs Yoshie in her eye.

This leaves her dumbfounded as Nozaki grabs a lead pipe and proceeds to brutally beat her to death as Risako and Yuri watch in horror. She then turns her attention to the other two girls, Risako frightened tries to calm her down and reveals that Hidetoshi Kuga was responsible for starting the fire that killed her parents and injured her sister. But despite this, Nozaki grabs Yoshie's knife and slashes Risako fingers and Yuri's ankle. Yuri attempts to climb out of the pit and escape, only for her ankle to split open from the cut, causing her to lose her balance and fall on a rock that kills her.

Risako cries out for help before she herself is beaten to death by Nozaki, who leaves their bodies to rot in the snow. Rumi is questioned by Ms. Minami about how she had been bullying Nozaki and the house fire, but she denies any involvement and leaves. A few days later, Risako's, Yuri's, and Yoshie's parents report their daughters missing to the police, who start an investigation into their disappearance. While the other bullies wonder what happened to the three of them, they are initially startled by the police arriving at their school thinking that they were there for them. But Mitsuru assures them that the police are there to search for their missing classmates, he however suspects they are involved with the fire due to their uneasiness.

Hiroaki Mamiya and Tsutomu Ikegawa two of the bullies call Rumi to let her know about their three missing classmates. Rumi at first doesn't think much of it, until the two suggest that Nozaki might have killed the three of them, but she finds that hard to believe. Nonetheless, Hiroaki and Tsutomu warn her to be careful as she might come after her as she was the mastermind behind the house fire.

After school, Hidetoshi is shown walking home alone when suddenly he spots Nozaki walking towards him. He asks what she wants, but when she doesn't respond he proceeds to shove her, but to his horror he sees that he's been stabbed. Nozaki then slices his cheek open and proceeds to chase him down, when he suddenly falls down a hill and badly injures his leg. Hidetoshi claims that he alone wasn't responsible for the fire and that there were others who helped him do it. Nozaki having heard enough, walks away and leaves him to die at the bottom of the hill.

Not long after, Hiroaki and Tsutomu call Rumi and inform her of Hidetoshi's disappearance and deduce that he was most likely killed by Nozaki. Rumi panicked asks what they should do, but the two of them tell her that they will take care of Nozaki. They consummate this by ambushing Nozaki in a forest, however Nozaki manages to severely injure Tsutomu who is accidentally shot by Hiroaki with a crossbow through his head. Tsutomu now deranged attacks Hiroaki, who is forced to kill him, he is then stabbed and killed by Nozaki.

Afterwards, Nozaki is shown walking alone dazed, Mitsuru spots her, he tells her not to be sad and promises to be there for her. He then proceeds to kiss her and in response she embraces him and breaks down. Rumi concerned that she hasn't heard back from the boys, goes to the garbage pit to see if Nozaki is really dead, but to her horror she finds the corpses of her three classmates. Terrified she quickly runs back to her house and locks herself in her room, where she calls Taeko and warns her that Nozaki is after all of them, and has already killed some of them.

But Taeko thinking she is crazy hangs up on her, Taeko proceeds to bite her hand hard enough to draw blood and is left shocked and angered that Rumi had actually taken her words seriously and burned down Nozaki's house. Later on, she is shown walking on the street when she spots Nozaki on a bus and runs to the bus stop where she meets Nozaki and talks with her. Nozaki asks why she had tormented her for so long and Taeko explains that she orchestrated the bullying out of jealousy.

As in the past, some time after Nozaki transferred to Taeko's school, the two grew close and became best friends. But that all changed when Mitsuru came along, Nozaki had started to hang out with him more and as a result she became jealous and decided to bully her, hoping that they could become close again. Taeko apologizes for what happened to her family and begs for her forgiveness, Nozaki seeing how sincere she is, decides to forgive her and the two become friends again.

Meanwhile, Ms. Minami is confronted by the missing student's parents who proceed to hound her over their missing children. Due to being overwhelmed, she ends up vomiting in front of them, embarrassed she runs outside and collapses in front of a snow thrower that ends up shredding her to death, much to the horror of the parents.

Taeko is shown heading home, when suddenly she is confronted by Rumi who asks for her help as Taeko was the one who told her to burn Nozaki's house down. But Taeko having enough of her proceeds to beat her and pulls out a knife to finish her off, but is she overpowered and seemingly killed by Rumi, who leaves her to die in the snow. Later on, Nozaki and Mitsuru are shown walking through a forest when suddenly Rumi appears brandishing a knife, she proceeds to taunt Nozaki about her family and the fire.

Rumi describes what she did and how her family suffered, Nozaki having heard enough, proceeds to charge at Rumi who stabs her in return. Enraged, Mitsuru proceeds to beat Rumi and eventually strangles her to death, during this his bag had spilled its contents, including his photos. Nozaki finds a photograph that shows her father protecting her little sister in the fire, this horrifies her as she realizes that he took a photo of his family suffering instead of helping them right away.

Mitsuru tries to justify this by telling her that he found what her father did inspiring and that's why he took the photo. But Nozaki rejects him and in his rage, Mitsuru proceeds to brutally beat her and attempts to take a photo of her. But luckily for her, the crossbow that was used by Hiroaki was nearby and she uses it to kill him. Nozaki stumbles away badly injured and bleeding out from her stab wound, she collapses and dies peacefully.

A couple of months later, the school is shown holding a graduation ceremony with Taeko who is revealed to be alive. She accepts her diploma and after the ceremony, she walks down the school halls while contemplating everything that had happened. She also reminisces about the good times she had with Nozaki, who looks out a window and the screen fades to black.
