The Masked Singer is back!

A new episode of season 13 of the hit Fox singing competition series aired on Wednesday night (April 9).

The show, which began in South Korea, features celebrities singing songs while wearing costumes and face masks concealing their identities until they’re eliminated. Throughout the season, the contestants provide clues to try and help the judges and fans figure out who is under the mask.

This season includes the new costumed character Detective Lucky Duck, who will help panelists “uncover who’s behind each mask.”

During the episode, Group C contestants Mad Scientist Monster, Nessy, and Yorkie hit the stage for another performance.

While on stage, Nessy performed “Can’t Fight This Feeling” by Reo Speedwagon.

Private Eyes Spinoff Heads West: Private Eyes West Coast Announced...

Jason Priestley and Cindy Sampson will reprise their roles from Canadian procedural Private Eyes in a spinoff series, four years after the original came to an end.

Private Eyes West Coast will see private investigators Matt Shade (Priestley) and Angie Everett (Sampson) solving cases in Victoria, British Columbia. Now leading different lives from their Toronto crime-fighting days, they encounter a world of different cases along with a new group of friends.

Further detail on casting, start of production and storyline will be announced “at a later date.” Fair to say the series will almost certainly retain the comedy-drama tone of the original show.

Lionsgate Canada and Piller/Segan are making it for Corus Entertainment network Global, reuniting the trio four year after the end of Private Eyes, which ran from 2016-2021. Lionsgate Television will handle international sales on West Coast, with the original having been a solid seller for the studio.

Wild Cards season 2 is the next installment in the Canadian police procedural series and news about the upcoming season has been rolling out steadily. Premiering in January 2024, Wild Cards is a Canadian TV show that streams on The CW in America. Starring Giacomo Gianniotti as Cole Ellis and Vanessa Morgan as Max Mitchell, Wild Cards follows a demoted police officer who apprehends a habitual con woman, Max. When Max helps Ellis solve a crime, the pair are made an offer; Max a way out of jail, and Ellis, his detective badge back, if they agree to work together.

Canada’s eOne division is rejigging following the Lionsgate buy, with Orphan Black EP Kerry Appleyard set to replace Tecca Crosby at the creative helm.

From April, Appleyard will take on the SVP Scripted and Unscripted role that Crosby has held for the past 12 years and will direct both genre teams creatively. She joins from Boat Rocker Studios where she was an EP on clone thriller Orphan Black, spin-off series Orphan Black: Echoes (AMC) and World War Two spy drama X Company, amongst others.

John Oates is speaking out amid his ongoing legal battle with bandmate Daryl Hall, saying he has “moved on” from the experience.

Hall sued Oates last month over Oates’ plan to sell his share of their joint venture Whole Oats Enterprises to Primary Wave Music without the other’s permission. Hall was granted a temporary restraining order against Oates as legal proceedings continue.

“You can’t ignore the fact that the Hall & Oates catalog of hits and the 50-year career will always trump almost anything that Daryl does on his own or I do on my own, which is okay because I’m very proud of that music,” Oates said recently on David Yontef’s Behind the Velvet Rope podcast. “I’m really proud of what Daryl and I created together. I think we made music that will stand the test of time.”

Daryl Hall is proving to be a real maneater, as more details of his restraining order and suit against former partner John Oates have come out, with Halls citing any potential music sale as likely causing “imminent irreparable harm.”

Hall’s restraining order, which was filed earlier this month, stems from Oates apparently seeking to move forward with a plan to sell the entirety of his individual rights, title and interest in Whole Oats Enterprises (Woe), a limited liability partnership which also owns the “Hall & Oates” trademark. As per the suit (obtained by People), Oates was going to sell to publisher Primary Wave Music without the consent of Hall. Daryl Hall plans to stop this “so as to maintain the status quo of Woe before there is a change in control of the partnership in violation of the terms of the Agreement.”

John Oates has issued a social media statement calling for empathy, but avoiding the main issue of the moment: why he and longtime collaborator Daryl Hall are engaged in litigation.

The 75-year-old posted a Thanksgiving selfie Thursday, offering a message calling for worldwide understanding.

“During this time of communal reflection and connection with loved ones, let’s not forget those experiencing challenges globally,” Oates wrote. He asked for a “more compassionate and supportive world.”

The 77-year-old Hall is suing Oates and has been granted a restraining order against his longtime bandmate. Although the legal documents are sealed, reports indicate their dispute is over which songs Oates will be allowed to sing during his solo appearances, an apparent sore point for Hall, who was the chief songwriter on most of the duo’s hits.

The Spencer Sisters Season 1 Episode 1 introduced both Darby and Victoria Spencer and hinted at why they had been estranged.

As an introductory chapter, the series did a decent job previewing the issues our leading ladies may have and what motivated them to go into the private investigation business together.

The Spencer Sisters was similar to many of Canada's other breezy procedurals, where private investigators solve crimes, typically bloodless ones, with plenty of humor sprinkled in. It reminded me of Private Eyes, which made sense since Alan McCullough created and produced both series.

The CW was fortunate to pick this series up since programming was lacking this fall during the strike. It fits right in with their programming, and both actresses have a massive fanbase.

The film written by Amir Ohebsion and Arash Homampour, which starts production in L.A. mid-May, is billed as an emotionally charged, character-driven drama following disaffected teen Ava and her estranged filmmaker father Greyson (Priestley) as they try to reconnect in the aftermath of a tragic incident prompted by his latest movie. The company is working with executive producer Caitlin D. Fryers to turn A Cosmology of Monsters into an ongoing one-hour TV series, with the first season to consist of eight episodes.

Fryers previously worked on the shows Wynonna Earp, Endlings, and Private Eyes. She is developing A Cosmology of Monsters with Saloon’s SVP of Scripted Content, Melissa Williamson. Hamill and Saloon’s Michael Kot are executive producing the show with Fryers.

“The Afterparty” was originally written and announced as a film a decade ago, but Christopher Miller is happy the movie never got made. “I don’t think it would’ve been as good as the series version,” he tells Gold Derby (watch above). “One thing about it was it was something I wrote 10, 11 years ago now, and it was a fun script doing a ‘Rashomon’ murder mystery. But the issue was when we looked at it again, each person’s story only gets seven minutes in a movie version when you need to be under two hours. There wasn’t time to really dig deep into the characters and get to empathize with them and have fun with how they tell the stories.”

Alternative streaming service Arrow, the home for all things cult, art, horror and world cinema, has snapped up Mark O’Brien’s debut feature “The Righteous.”

Having acquired the film’s U.K., Eire and U.S. rights and Canadian home entertainment rights, Arrow will roll out a digital release in the U.K. U.S. and Eire this summer as well as a deluxe collector’s edition Blu-ray in the U.K., U.S., Canada and Eire under the Arrow Video brand.

The film will be released theatrically and on digital in Canada this summer by Vortex Media.

Studio Babelsberg, the historic German studio that recently hosted “The Matrix Resurrections” production, has been acquired by Tpg Real Estate Partners.

The company, which is part of global alternative asset firm Tpg, first revealed plans to acquire a stake in the studio in September via Trep’s acquisition of Babelsberg’s main shareholder, Filmbetriebe Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (Fbb), which was controlled by Carl L. Woebcken and Christoph Fisser. As part of that deal, Fbb launched a public tender offer to acquire a majority of the shares in Studio Babelsberg, which went through in October.

All closing conditions of the transaction have now been fulfilled, the companies have said, with Woebcken and Fisser continuing to hold a minority stake in the studio.

Ally Pankiw will make her feature directing debut with “Brooke & Sam,” an upcoming comedic drama featuring “Shiva Baby” breakout Rachel Sennott.

The film, which quietly wrapped production, follows Sam, a young stand-up comedian and au pair struggling with Ptsd, who is weighing whether or not to join the search for Brooke, a missing girl she used to nanny. The story exists between the present, where Sam tries to recover from her trauma with the help of her friends in the comedy community, and the past, where memories of Brooke make it harder and harder to ignore the teen’s disappearance; and harder and harder to get back on stage.

Pankiw, who wrote the script along with directing the film, has established herself in the television and streaming world. Her directing and executive producing credits include the entire first season of Netflix’s series, “Feel Good,” which was created by and stars comedian Mae Martin.

Muse Entertainment Enterprises has tapped film and TV vet Alex Jordan to serve as its new senior VP of production. Jordan, who starts on January 1, will be based in Toronto and focus on producing programming for the international market.

Jordan most recently served as a producer on Paramount Plus’ “Mayor of Kingstown.” He also worked on feature “Between Waves,” which was released this summer. His other credits include working on series such as “Nikita,” “Transporter,” “Rogue” and “Private Eyes.”

“Alex has a track record of producing great shows, and I look forward to having such a respected and talented leader in our Toronto operation,” said Irene Litinsky, Muse Entertainment’s president of production.

Jordan will work closely with Litinsky, as well as with Muse’s development teams in Montreal, Toronto and Los Angeles to produce scripted programming across all genres and formats for the global market.
