Avis à la une
I was willing to give this a go, due to it having a reasonable rating on imdb and also a very strange premise. Unfortunately i found this movie to be incredibly tedious with a terrible script, amateur acting, incredibly bad sound quality and poor attempts at comedy (cinematography is fine for the most part). A number of characters introduced were completely pointless and the plot was all over the place. The film really seems to completely run out of steam in the.third act; they even 'shot the rodeo' ....Ive seen some great low and even no budget movies in the past, but this is one everyone can safely skip as you will be missing nothing. Wash your car instead.
....and then they got lost. Maybe it played really well in the area where they filmed but meaningless outside GA. Yes, the acting was stiff and wooden, but that's to be expected in a campy movie - several times I saw the string pulling the cap, nice!
At least it didn't look like shot-on-video garbage or 'found film' excrement, film quality was good and the characters were at least partially believable. The downside was all the subplots that go nowhere and hackneyed clichés of red/blue/black/white/hick/city. And why did the hubcap get relegated to a minor side note?
Oh, at least we didn't have to see guys' gluteus which seems to be the the only skin allowed now.

Stumbling upon the 2021 movie "Hubcap" by random chance here in 2024 and immediately taking a liking to the movie's synopsis, of course I had to sit down and watch what writer and director Dick Mays had to offer. Sure, I had never even heard about the movie prior to sitting down to watching it, so I didn't know what I was in for.
The storyline in "Hubcap" was so wonderfully far out there and bizarre that it was actually quite enjoyable and entertaining to watch. I mean, a movie about a killer hubcap, that pretty much says it all. Sure, there was the 2010 movie "Rubber" about a killer tire, and now "Hubcap" in 2021. It should be said that the storyline in "Hubcap" is definitely not something that will find an appeal with just everyone in the audience; I happened to enjoy it, though.
I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list, but it should be said that they definitely had a good cast ensemble put together for the movie. And I do enjoy sitting down to watch a movie with an entirely unfamiliar cast ensemble, as there are no associations to previously portrayed characters from other movies. The acting performances in "Hubcap" were good, and that definitely added a lot to the overall enjoyment of the movie.
The effects in "Hubcap" were actually good. It wasn't an impressive display of effects or CGI, mind you. But whatever effects were being utilized in the movie definitely worked out nicely and added something to the movie.
While "Hubcap" definitely is a watchable and enjoyable movie, then it is hardly a movie that warrants more than just a single viewing, as the storyline just doesn't have the contents for supporting multiple viewings.
My rating of writer and director Dick Mays's 2021 movie "Hubcap" lands on a five out of ten stars.

This kind of off-the-wall comedy is what indie filmmaking is all about. If you want your standard comedy then stick to studio movies but if you're a little tire of the same old, same old then give this crazy flick a shot. It is really far out. I don't know what the writer was on but whatever it was it worked. I don't think you can come up with a half-baked idea like this while sober. The movie is very well shot and the acting is fantastic. It is entertaining throughout, which is more than I can say for lots of studio films, and it is, for the most part, fairly clean. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
"Hubcap" delivers a fun, campy horror experience reminiscent of cult classics like Rubber and Christine. Set in a conservative mountain town, the film follows Rainy Lawson, Georgia's first female sheriff, as she takes on a supernatural killer with an unusual form-a possessed hubcap. Alongside the horror, the film weaves in themes of vengeance, romance, and deep-seated social tensions, making for an engaging watch.
The movie embraces its B-movie aesthetic, leaning into the absurdity of its premise while keeping the audience hooked with its eerie atmosphere and unexpected moments of dark humor. It's a blend of supernatural horror and small-town drama that feels fresh and unpredictable.
That said, there are some technical shortcomings, particularly in the sound design. The dialogue mixing is inconsistent, with moments where background noise fluctuates noticeably between cuts. Some lines also seem to suffer from microphone issues, which can be a bit distracting. However, these flaws don't detract too much from the overall experience.
If you enjoy quirky horror films where everyday objects turn deadly, Hubcap is well worth a watch. It's a creative, revenge-driven horror flick with a unique premise, and despite some technical hiccups, it remains thoroughly entertaining.
