Avis à la une
I enjoyed this movie even tho it was a bit predictable. Very good story, the music was great BUT her singing was annoying! I could only understand 1/2 the words. Stop trying to be so breathy. Just sing.
I didn't have high expectations for this, but I ended up actually kind of enjoying it. The story itself is sweet, I liked the tension between the main characters. The acting was great and the pacing was pretty good too. It was a little predictable, but nothing too bad.
The two main characters obviously had some differences in opinions and values, but still ended up falling for each other. This is sweet and all, but I just hoped they had explored that more. I mean, their values are in direct conflict, because they're literally the opposite from each other. And they never seemed to find any common ground, there was no chemistry in their conversations. This all made the ending feel a little unbelievable.

First the good things,
I really like that they both had different political views and in the end of the film neither of their political views change. It'd rare to see a story where neither of the main characters change their views for the other but instead come together through it. They understand why the other party thinks that way, sympathize but doesn't mean they just abandon their own belief as well. I love that and my favorite thing in this film. It's a good lesson for people who'll cut away important people in their life due to politics. Of course, doesn't mean if someone is believing in something evil you shouldn't cut them off but in the movie they both had justifiable reasons why they believe what they believe in.
Bad things,
Music was...it wasn't so horrible I need to burn my ears but it was really not good. I've heard Sofia sing before and she IS A GOOD SINGER. Like she really is. So when I hear her singing in the movie I was like...what happened?? Did her voice change or did they ask her to sound that way? Like when she sang Part of your world or rotten to the core she didn't sound that way? She sounded so breathy (more than her norm) and strained. I'm really sad cause she's a good singer
Anyways those are the main points there's more but don't have time. It's good it's cute and don't think too hard or you won't enjoy it. It's a light hearted movie.

I had very low expectations going into this. It had its charming moments, sparks of sincerity that helped make up for the silly tropes about gun-crazy marines and woke bartending musicians. But overall, it was 2 hours of somewhat soulless storytelling.
Also, why on earth do producers feel the need to over-produce vocals? I have no idea what Sofia Carson sounds like in real life because her voice is always so tampered with. It didn't sound pleasant or realistic.

Formulaic? Absolutely.
Did it pioneer new territory? No.
But beyond that did it check the marks for the genre? Yes.
Two leads that devour the camera, have realistic (current) differences and evolve. And most importantly- it doesn't overthink itself. It's a story about two people that find their way. And that's enough for me- and should be for nearly anyone of the genre.
Heck- the soundtrack was great (kudos) as and added bonus.
