Meyer Gottlieb, who headed Samuel Goldwyn Films and produced films including “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” died Monday in Los Angeles. He was 86.

Tom Rothman, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, said in a statement, “Meyer was a gentleman of the old school. I was fortunate to work for him when he ran the Samuel Goldwyn Company, in the heyday of independent film. I learned an enormous amount from him — most importantly, that it is possible to make a life in Hollywood without sacrificing integrity and honesty, both of which he embodied entirely, along with smarts, wisdom, and kindness. I send my sincere condolences to his loving family during this difficult time.”

Born in Poland just before the Germans invaded, Gottlieb was a Holocaust survivor who lived in Ukraine labor camps during the war and then in a displaced person’s camp in Germany.

Gottlieb worked as a senior manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers before helping Samuel Goldwyn Jr. start Samuel Goldwyn Films in June 1978. He was named president and COO in 1988.

Lee shared a photo of himself with Whitlock on Instagram on Tuesday, writing, “Today I Learned Of The Passing Of My Dear Beloved Brother Isiah Whitlock. God Bless.”

The first lawsuit against Tyler Perry accusing him of leveraging his power in Hollywood to sexually assault aspiring male actors in his orbit was filed in June. Another lawsuit was filed Dec. 26, with the entertainment mogul characterizing claims from both of the accusers as a shakedown. But his legal troubles may just be beginning.

“There’s now two of these lawsuits,” Jonathan Delshad, a lawyer for both Perry accusers, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There may be more coming.”

Whitlock’s manager, Brian Liebman, announced his death Tuesday on Instagram.

Meyer Gottlieb, the Holocaust survivor who helped relaunch Samuel Goldwyn Films, where he produced features including Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and the 2013 remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, has died. He was 86.

Meyer died Monday at his home in Los Angeles, his wife, Pattikay Gottlieb, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Gottlieb was named president and COO of Samuel Goldwyn Co. in 1988, having assisted Samuel Goldwyn Jr., son of the Oscar winner and legendary Hollywood mogul, in reviving the label a decade earlier.

He served as a co-producer on Master and Commander (2003), a co-production with 20th Century Fox, Miramax and Universal that was directed by Peter Weir and starred Russell Crowe as a brash Royal Navy captain doing battle during the Napoleonic Wars.

Disney announced Tuesday that director Joachim Rønning’s sci-fi feature is set to begin streaming Jan. 7 on Disney+. Yvette Nicole Brown is speaking out ahead of the release of CNN’s documentary on Chevy Chase, I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, which reopens old wounds from the set of NBC’s Community involving allegations of racist slurs and harassment.

Brown, who starred as Shirley Bennett on the comedy, posted a statement on Instagram that appeared to address the documentary, though she never referenced it by name.

“These are things I’ve never spoken of publicly and perhaps never will,” Brown wrote. “Anyone currently speaking For or About me with perceived authority is speaking without Ever speaking to me about the things they claim to know about. They actually don’t really know me — at all.”

She continued, “They also have no knowledge of my relationship with anyone I’ve worked with & cannot credibly speak on any current or previous issues. I hate that this all had to be said.

“Tron: Ares” will park its light cycle at Disney+, as the movie arrives on the streamer on Jan. 7.

The science-fiction film is the third in the “Tron” franchise, following the 1982 original and its 2010 sequel, “Tron: Legacy.” It focuses on a powerful AI being called Ares that travels from the eponymous digital program into the real world. Jared Leto stars as the personified AI alongside Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Gillian Anderson and Jeff Bridges, who reprises his role as protagonist Kevin Flynn from the previous two movies. The film was directed by Joachim Rønning.

Disney released “Tron: Ares” in theaters on Oct. 10, 2025. It opened to $60 million at the global box office, toppling its competitor “Roofman,” which opened that same weekend. However, it dropped precipitously in its second week, when its No. 1 spot was usurped by “Black Phone 2.”

“Corey Feldman vs. the World” director Marcie Hume disputed Corey Feldman’s legal team’s claim that he was not aware of the documentary with a new behind-the-scenes clip, showing the musician and actor participating in filming of the new movie.

The documentary, which debuted Dec. 12, sees Feldman allege that he was molested by Corey Haim while filming their 1987 film, “The Lost Boys.”

In response, Feldman’s legal team said in a statement to media that he had “no knowledge of the production of this documentary or its release. He was not involved in the creative choices, characterization or portrayal of his statements or others in the film.”

Michael J. Fox has made his Shrinking debut.

On Tuesday, Apple TV released the trailer for the third season of Shrinking, which stars Jason Segel and Harrison Ford. In the trailer, Fox meets Dr. Paul Rhoades (Ford) in a waiting room.

“What are you in for?” Fox asks Paul. “Parkinson’s. You?” Paul responds, to which Fox jokes, “Just a haircut,” and they both start laughing.

Paul’s had Parkinson’s since season one. However, he initially tried to hide it until he realized he needed to face his disease.

The guest role marks Fox’s return to acting after stepping away in 2020 due to memory and speech issues from Parkinson’s disease.

Shrinking follows Jimmy’s (Segel) grieving therapist, who began breaking the rules by telling his clients exactly what he was thinking — and ignoring his ethics. By doing so, he found himself making changes in people’s lives as well as his own.

There are two things you can count on right now in television: football and “Tracker.” Both once again dominated Variety’s annual look at the most-watched telecasts in primetime.

This year, a full 48 of the top 100 slots went to NFL games — up from 45 in 2024 — and that number actually jumps to 55 if you include six NFL-related studio shows and one weather delay.

“Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary makes his acting debut in A24’s “Marty Supreme” alongside Timothée Chalamet, and one of his standout scenes involves spanking the Oscar-nominated actor with a ping pong paddle.

In the Josh Safdie-directed sports dramedy, O’Leary plays Milton Rockwell, a successful pen entrepreneur who is married to retired actress Kay Stone (Gwyneth Paltrow). After Chalamet’s aspiring ping-pong champion Marty Mauser becomes entangled with Kay, he realizes Milton could be his ticket to the world championship in Tokyo — but it comes with a humiliating price.

In an interview with Variety, O’Leary said that Chalamet had the option to sit out of the scene, but the 30-year-old actor insisted the film feature his real butt.

“When it came time to whack him, there was a stunt ass. There was a double,” O’Leary said. “[Chalamet] wouldn’t do it. He said he’ll do it himself.

No matter what the conservative politicians or any of the other bigots in the world have to say about it, queer people aren’t going anywhere and there were a panoply of great films in 2025 that prove it. Movies that stretched across genres, mediums, and multiple communities to share joy, fear, unity, loneliness, complexity, silliness, sorrow and laughter.

Director Marcie Hume is responding to a claim that Corey Feldman was not aware of footage she shot for her just-released documentary about his life on his rock tour, “Corey Feldman vs. the World.”

Variety broke the news that, in the documentary, Feldman alleges that Corey Haim molested him. Feldman’s lawyers responded that the mention of molestation was not physical, but rather referred to Haim’s advances towards him. Feldman’s legal team also said he had “no knowledge of the production of this documentary or its release. He was not involved in the creative choices, characterization, or portrayal of his statements or others in the film.”

In a newly-released scene from Hume, Feldman grabs the camera and turns it around on the director, saying, “Two shot, here’s the deal: So Marcie’s on the bus with us, because Marcie is the documentarian who is making the film that you’re watching.

Need more toxicity? Hulu is prepared. The streamer is launching the “‘Tell Me Lies’ Official Podcast,” hosted by Stassi Schroeder, Variety can exclusively announce.

There is a recently burgeoning genre of documentaries — usually either celebrity or true crime in focus — driven not by aesthetic or storytelling imperatives but by (self-)promotional machinery. They’re unscripted movies or series that look at the life of your favorite ’80s movie stars or unsolved murders as fodder for breathless online reports titled “10 Things We Learned From …” or “[Insert Famous Person’s Name Here] Finally Reveals …”

The emphasis is on revelation and not introspection or reflection. In a way, then, a documentary like Angus Wall’s Being Eddie, a generally amiable and adulatory 90 minutes streaming on Netflix, fails; with its softly hagiographic approach, the director never pushes Eddie Murphy to any place that feels untapped or confrontational, and therefore newsworthy.
