Jessica Kurdali, who has supervised news talent relations for years for NBCUniversal’s news properties, will jump to Versant, the cable-networks operations that parent Comcast is spinning off, where she will oversee talent strategy across all platforms, including news, entertainment and sports.

Kurdali will manage strategic recruitment and on-air development. She will also work across Versant’s businesses to identify new voices, ensure talent can be seen across the company’s various media assets and build a bench of up and coming personalities.

She most recently served as senior vice president of talent and strategy for NBC News and MSNBC. She started at NBCU as an intern in 2002.

Her exit from NBC means NBC News will be without a senior talent executive for an interim period. ABC News also has not filled a similar position within its ranks.

As MSNBC prepares to split off from the Comcast mothership later this year, a new daytime lineup debuts Monday that will look quite similar to the news-driven approach it has had with NBC News as a sister network.

That is the point, as MSNBC for the first time builds out its own news division, a rarity for linear TV these days, while retaining a lineup of primetime progressive hosts.

As part of the daytime changes, Ana Cabrera’s 10 a.m. Et show is expanding to two hours, followed by Chris Jansing Reports at noon Et and then Katy Tur Reports at 2 p.m. Et. A new promo from the soon-to-be-spun-off cable-news outlet features a reading of the First Amendment via voice-overs from Rachel Maddow, Ari Melber, Jen Psaki and Lawrence O’Donnell. A core tenet of the Constitution of the United States, the First Amendment guarantees freedom of religion, speech, the press, assembly, as well as the right to petition the government. MSNBC confirmed plans to overhaul its daytime, primetime and weekend lineup, with Jen Psaki and the three anchors of The Weekend — Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele and Alicia Menendez — getting primetime shows.

Psaki will anchor the Tuesday to Friday 9 p.m. Et primetime hour starting in the spring, when Rachel Maddow returns to a once-a-week Monday schedule. Psaki will succeed Alex Wagner, who will continue at the network as senior political analyst.

The changes were outlined in a memo to staffers from MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler.

MSNBC is canceling Joy Reid’s 7 p.m. Et show ReidOut and she will leave the network this week. Townsend, Menendez and Steele will co-host a weeknight show in that time slot, including a two-hour edition on Mondays. A rotating series of anchors will fill in until the new show is launched.

The network also is making plans for replacements to The Weekend trio.

MSNBC unveiled its new lineup on Monday, with former Biden Press Secretary Jen Psaki seeing her show expand to several nights during the week and outgoing anchor Joy Reid being replaced by a new program.

The changes are being spearheaded by recently-appointed MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler, who is betting on names that are well-liked in Democratic and left-leaning circles to help the cable channel continue its rebound from a post-election viewer exodus.

The big change is that Psaki’s show, “Inside with Jen Psaki,” will now air Tuesday-Friday at 9 p.m. Et. Veteran host Rachel Maddow will return following President Trump’s first 100 days in office to host the 9 p.m. hour on Mondays.

Psaki is replacing Alex Wagner, who has anchored Tuesday-Friday at 9 p.m. since 2022; Wagner will be staying with MSNBC as a senior political analyst.

MSNBC is making its lineup overhaul official, elevating a handful of key talent to the evenings while also making substantial changes to its weekend and dayside hours.

The most notable changes were telegraphed over the weekend, and will see major changes to MSNBC’s evening and primetime lineups.

As expected, when Rachel Maddow returns to her one day per week schedule in April, Jen Psaki will take over the 9 p.m hour on Tuesdays-Fridays. And The Weekend hosts Alicia Menendez, Michael Steele and Symone Sanders-Townsend will shift to the 7 p.m. hour, while hosting a two hour show on Mondays from 7-9 p.m.

As part of the changes, MSNBC’s current 7 p.m. host Joy Reid will leave the channel, with rotating hosts filling in until the new lineup kicks in. Alex Wagner, who had been helming 9 p.m. on Tuesdays-Fridays, will stay with MSNBC as a senior political analyst.

Jen Psaki, the former Biden White House press secretary who has become a favorite at MSNBC since joining in 2023, will get even more screen time in front of viewers in April when she takes over the network’s 9 p.m. slot between Tuesday and Friday.

The move is the latest to be unveiled from MSNBC under new leader Rebecca Kutler, who has wasted little time in tearing up the network’s schedule as it faces seismic pressures. MSNBC is grappling not only with the new Trump administration, to which many of its progressive anchors and analysts are directly opposed, but it also faces a big change in its business operations once it is, along with a group of other cable networks, spun off from Comcast in a transaction slated to be completed later this year.

“CNN This Morning Weekend” co-anchor Amara Walker is leaving the news network after more than a decade.

In a Thursday statement, Walker said she decided to “seize on this moment of change in our industry and take a hiatus from TV news.”

“I’m a journalist at heart, but I have other professional passions as well. The timing couldn’t be better to embark on the next chapter,” she added. “I have other professional goals that I haven’t been able to pursue given my full-time commitment to a breaking news TV schedule. I’m excited about all that is to come and the opportunities that lie ahead.”

“In my 10 years with CNN, I’ve had the privilege of working on nearly all of its platforms, as an anchor for CNN, CNN International and CNN Max, and also as a correspondent,” Walker continued. “Winning an Emmy Award recently was the icing on the cake.

Rashida Jones is stepping down as president of MSNBC, a role she’s held for the last four years. She will remain at the organization for a period described as a few months to support it during this transitional period.

Jones will be replaced by Rebecca Kutler, who has been named as the organization’s interim president effective immediately. The SVP of Content Strategy was recruited to MSNBC by Jones in 2022.

The decision to step down came from Jones. Chairman of NBCUniversal Media Group Mark Lazarus admitted he was “surprised” by Jones’ decision during a meeting with staffers, an insider familar with the matter told TheWrap.

Rashida Jones is stepping down as president of MSNBC as the network prepares to be spun off from Comcast along with other cable channels.

At a staff meeting Tuesday morning, Jones said that she decided it was the “right time for me” to move on from the network and the company, where she has worked for the past 11 years.

“I’m really excited about what we’ve done. I’m excited about what’s next. I’m excited about what you guys are going to do next,” Jones told staffers, per a source. “I’m excited to watch it from afar, but I’m really excited that this is the right time for me, so, I wanted to share that with you guys directly.”

She said that Mark Lazarus, who is leading the spun off cable assets, asked her to stay on during a transition period.

Former President of the United States Jimmy Carter’s funeral service is taking place today.

The late 39th President’s casket arrived in Washington D.C. on Tuesday (January 6), followed by a procession to the U.S. Capitol, the Rotunda service and the start of the lying in state.

The national day of mourning began on Thursday (January 9) as U.S. officials, loved ones and members of the public say their final goodbyes to Jimmy Carter, who will be buried beside his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, at the home they built in Plains, Georgia.

He will be honored with two funeral services: one in Washington, D.C., and one in his small hometown.

Several prominent TV networks quickly reworked their Sunday schedules in the wake of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, with broadcast networks standing up special morning coverage and cable-news outlets wholly reworking their normal weekend programming.

ABC and NBC broadcast special versions of “Good Morning America” and “Today,” while CBS pre-empted its usual offering — “CBS Sunday Morning” — in favor of a bespoke program anchored by John Dickerson. At NBC, Savannah Guthrie, who co-anchors weekday “Today,” joined Willie Geist, who typically leads a Sunday “Today” broadcast. ABC News, meanwhile, convened the three hosts of the weekday broadcast of “Good Morning America” — Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan — for an atypical weekend program.

Exclusive: Jessica Kurdali is expanding her purview at NBC News. Kurdali, who most recently served as Vice President of Talent Development, has been elevated to SVP, Talent Strategy, at NBCU News Group, supporting both NBC News and MSNBC.

The promotion was announced today by Rebecca Blumenstein, NBC News President of Editorial.

A handful of the news anchors at MSNBC recently held a dinner to welcome Ana Cabrera, the former CNN journalist, to the network, where she has taken the reins of its 10 a.m. hour. Chris Jansing and Katy Tur, familiar faces to MSNBC viewers, were holding court, but Andrea Mitchell, a legendary Washington correspondent who has anchored an early afternoon show on MSNBC since 2008, was missing, due to making an appearance at Henry Kissinger’s 100th birthday.

“I thought a 100th birthday party for somebody would end early,” Mitchell confesses. “But it didn’t.”

Cabrera, Jansing, Tur, Mitchell have all found time to get together more frequently in recent weeks. They, along with their colleague, José Díaz-Balart, are playing a more critical role at MSNBC — but not in hours when such significance might be expected.

Entertainment reporter Chloe Melas, who announced her departure from CNN Wednesday on social media, will be joining NBC News as an entertainment correspondent starting Aug. 21.

The entertainment reporter will be contributing to all NBC News platforms, including MSNBC programming and digital to cover the “intersection of entertainment, business and culture.”

Chloe Melas is joining NBC News as an entertainment correspondent based in New York.

Melas has been at CNN, and announced her exit in an Instagram post Wednesday.

“I landed my first job at CNN as a News Assistant right out of college and I loved it so much that I returned 7 years later. Last week, this latest professional chapter came to a close. It has truly been a masterclass in journalism,” she wrote.

Melas will focus on the intersection of entertainment, business and culture and report for all platforms of NBC News, including digital and MSNBC, according to Catherine Kim, senior vice president of NBC News Editorial.

“If you know Chloe by reputation, you know she is a relentless, ambitious, prolific reporter who expands the definition of entertainment reporting,” Kim wrote.

Melas joined CNN in 2016. Before that, she worked at Pmc’s Hollywood Life and as anchor at VH1.

Veteran entertainment journalist Chloe Melas is jumping from CNN to NBC News.

Melas will start as an entertainment correspondent at NBC next week, covering “the intersection of entertainment, business and culture,” according to a memo Thursday morning from Catherine Kim, senior vp NBC News editorial.

The CNN veteran, who has been with the Warner Bros. Discovery network for 24 years as a business correspondent and early-morning anchor, is leaving and likely to land at NBC News in an as-yet-unannounced role, according to two people familiar with the matter. She announced her exit on Friday’s broadcast of “Early Start,” the CNN crack-of-dawn program she has anchors since 2014.

As Warner Bros. Discovery has orchestrated massive changes and cuts to the popular news giant, a stream of producers, anchors and executives have left — some of their own volition, and many of them not. But no matter the case, a growing number of these now-former CNN die-hards are being scooped up by rivals including MSNBC, ABC News and CBS News.

CBS News on Wednesday announced it had lined up Lisa Ling as a contributor. The veteran journalist spent eight years at CNN leading viewers through interesting issues as host of the documentary series, This Is Life,” which was cancelled amid a cutback of original programming that uses outside partners. ABC News on Wednesday announced that Brooke Bower, who had been managing editor of CNN Politics, was joining as executive producer of the Sunday politics show “This Week.”

MSNBC is adding another notable news anchor to its dayside lineup.

Ana Cabrera, who left CNN at the end of last year, will anchor MSNBC’s 10 a.m. hour in a program called Ana Cabrera Reports.

Jose Diaz-Balart most recently anchored the hour for MSNBC, but shifted to 11 a.m. as part of a larger shake-up earlier this year.

MSNBC has reworked its daytime lineup over the last few years under the “Reports” brand name, with news anchors like Diaz-Balart, Katy Tur, Chris Jansing, Andrea Mitchell and others hosting their own versions of the news-driven format. As with the other Reports shows, Cabrera’s program will include in-the-field reporting, interviews with newsmakers and discussions around current events.

Before joining MSNBC Cabrera was an anchor and national correspondent for CNN for nearly 10 years.

Ana Cabrera has been named the new host of MSNBC’s 10 a.m. hour as part of network president Rashida Jones’ ongoing effort to focus on hard news programming.

On April 10, the network will launch “Ana Cabrera Reports,” which will see the award-winning journalist break down the latest news and bring expert in-the-field reporting on the day’s most important stories to viewers, paired with interviews and discussions with newsmakers, journalists, thought leaders and others.

Her move to MSNBC had been expected since she announced in December that she was departing CNN. The hourlong show will air at 10 a.m. Et. Kerrie Wudyka is the executive producer.

Cabrera had been with CNN since 2013, based in Denver, before anchoring CNN Newsroom. At the network, she hosted two presidential town halls, and she has reported on major stories including the protests in Ferguson, Mo. and North Korea prisoner Kenneth Bae’s return to the U.S. She previously was an anchor for Wgmh-tv, the ABC affiliate in Denver, and was an anchor and reporter at NBC and Fox affiliates in Spokane, Wa.

Chris Jansing is accustomed to doing marathon stints in front of the camera for NBC News and MSNBC. In the aftermath of 9/11, she sometimes found herself reporting or anchoring for seven hours or more. “I lived on tater tots for, I think, two months,” she recalls in a recent interview. “It was the one thing that could fill me up and wouldn’t ruin my lipstick.”

CNN isn’t the only cable-news network reworking its daytime schedule.

MSNBC is expanding Chris Jansing’s afternoon perch to two hours from one as the Washington D.C-based Hallie Jackson, who also anchors a late-afternoon program on NBC News Now, leaves the cable outlet to focus on the streaming work. Meanwhile, weekend host Jonathan Capehart, who has held forth on Sundays, will now do an hour on both Saturday and Sunday. All the moves come as NBCUniversal’s new operations refine their efforts under a reorganization unveiled Wednesday.

The moves were revealed to staffers Thursday in memos from Rashida Jones, president of MSNBC, and Janelle Rodriguez, the NBC News executive vice president who oversees NBC News Now. Programming changes at MSNBC will take place February 13 for weekday programs and February 18 for weekend programs, Jones said in her note.

In a statement, she said that “after nearly a decade at CNN, I’m making the personal decision to explore a new professional chapter. Time to embrace new challenges and opportunities.”

Since news broke of her pending departure earlier this month, sources have said that she is eyeing a role at NBCUniversal. The network has declined to comment and Cabrera’s reps did not return requests for comment. Her exit is said to be unrelated to the recent layoffs at the network.

Cabrera anchors CNN Newsroom weekdays at 1 Pm Et. She wrote on Twitter that her final show will be on Dec. 22.

Barbara Starr, the longtime Pentagon correspondent for CNN, is departing the network.

She wrote in a memo to staffers, “To my many colleagues and friends, With the expiration of my contract in the coming days I have made the decision to move on. Let me say this…you never say goodbye to your friends, so I won’t.” CNN’s Oliver Darcy first reported on her exit, and the network confirmed it.

Starr joined CNN in 2001, having joined from ABC News where she worked as a producer.

Her exit follows the layoff of hundreds of employees last week, including veteran correspondent Martin Savage and political analyst Chris Cillizza. Another on-air figure, Ana Cabrera, also is looking to leave the network when her contract expires, according to sources.

The hundreds of layoffs at CNN this week were, as CNN boss Chris Licht predicted, a “gut punch,” but the question for staffers — and viewers — is what will happen next.

For viewers, the changes may be apparent in a number of ways, particularly at Hln, where the Robin Meade-anchored Morning Express is ending and Meade, whose first day on air at Hln was Sept. 11, 2001, is departing along with staffers. Instead, CNN will replace the morning show with a simulcast of CNN This Morning, the relaunched version of New Day. Ana Cabrera, an up-and-coming daytime anchor at CNN, is expected to leave the network and join NBC News, according to three people familiar with the matter — the latest in a series of CNN personnel who have defected to the NBCUniversal news unit.

At present, Cabrera anchors the 1 p.m. hour on CNN, a move she made after working weekend anchor shifts and as a Denver correspondent for the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet, which she joined in 2013. But she is expected to depart and, after waiting out months-long period during which she cannot compete with CNN, join NBC News in an as-yet-undisclosed capacity, these people indicated.

Spokespeople for both CNN and NBC News declined to comment.

There may be a natural roost for Cabrera. MSNBC has yet to install a permanent anchor in its 11 a.m. slot, a space that was previously inhabited by Craig Melvin.

Meet the Press Daily with Chuck Todd will move from MSNBC to the network streaming service NBC News Now.

Starting on June 6, his daily show will stream as Meet the Press Now, marking the latest effort to expand the offerings on the free platform.

Todd’s Meet the Press Daily, also known as Mtp Daily, had aired at 1 Pm Et each day, and will move to 4 Pm Et on NBC News Now. Chris Jansing will take over the 1 Pm hour starting on May 26 with MSNBC Reports.

The network also announced that senior investigative and consumer correspondent Vicky Nguyen would join Morgan Radford, NBC News correspondent, as co-host of NBC News Now Live from 11 Am to 1 Pm. Correspondent Aaron Gilchrist will anchor NBC News Now Live from 2 Pm to 4 Pm.

Updated, with comment from Project Veritas: A federal judge has tossed out a defamation lawsuit filed by Project Veritas against CNN, concluding that an on-air statement made about the conservative group did not rise to the level of an actionable claim.

Last year, Project Veritas, known for its “sting” operations against members of the mainstream media, sued the network, contending that it misrepresented the reasons that it was suspended from Twittter.

In its lawsuit, they cited a Feb. 15, 2021, report in which Ana Cabrera said that its suspension from Twitter was due to “spreading disinformation.” In fact, the group said, it was suspended for “repeated violations of Twitter’s policies prohibiting the sharing—or threats of sharing—of other people’s private information without consent.”

Project Veritas has sued CNN for defamation over a segment in which one of its anchors commented on the group’s suspension from Twitter.

In the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta, the group claims that on Feb. 15, Ana Cabrera said that its suspension from Twitter was due to “spreading disinformation.” In fact, the group said, it was suspended for “repeated violations of Twitter’s policies prohibiting the sharing—or threats of sharing—of other people’s private information without consent.”

In the segment, Cabrera said, “We’re starting to see companies cracking down to try to stop the spread of misinformation and to hold some people who are spreading it accountable, Brian. For example, Twitter has suspended the account of Project Veritas, a conservative activist, uh, activist organization. Donald Trump returned to the spotlight Sunday with a speech before the Conservative Political Action Conference, but the news networks took different approaches to how they covered the event.

Fox News carried the speech live, but CNN and MSNBC did not.

The latter two networks covered Trump’s address: CNN had Jim Acosta and Donie O’Sullivan in Orlando, while MSNBC stuck with Al Sharpton’s regularly scheduled Politics Nation. Sharpton opened his show by blasting the speech, saying that it “proves just how content the Republican Party is to remain in darkness.”

On CNN, anchor Ana Cabrera went to Acosta, who ran clips of Trump’s opening remarks and then took issue with one — that “there has never been a journey more successful than the one we have been on.” Acosta noted that Trump lost the election. CNN’s Biden Town Hall bested MSNBC and Fox News combined in the key adults 25-54 demographic on Tuesday night. While CNN was No. 1 in the time slot in terms of total viewers, it did not beat its two largest rivals on a combined basis by that measurement.

From 9 p.m. to 10:15 p.m., the President Biden Town Hall drew 880,000 adults 25-54, according to Nielsen. MSNBC had 424,000 over that 75 minutes, Fox News Channel managed 392,000. In other words, CNN bested MSNBC by 108%, Fox News by 124% and the combination of the two by 64,000 viewers in they age range.

The advantage among the youngest adults, those 18-34, was even greater. Biden drew 205,000 viewers in that age range, Fox had 64,000 and MSNBC managed 42,000.

In terms of primetime (8 p.m. to 11 p.m.) averages, CNN won comfortably in the key news demo, but Fox News Channel finished first in terms of total viewers.

CNN revealed a shakeup to its daytime schedule Wednesday, with Brianna Keilar set to co-host “New Day” with John Berman from 6 to 9 a.m. on weekdays, while Alisyn Camerota, formerly “New Day” anchor, and Victor Blackwell will take over Brooke Baldwin’s old slot from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Ana Cabrera will anchor CNN Newsroom weekdays from 1 to 2 p.m.

In addition to these changes, Jim Acosta, the network’s new chief domestic correspondent, will anchor “CNN Newsroom” on Saturdays and Sundays from 3-6 p.m. and Boris Sanchez, who previously served as a CNN White House correspondent, will join Christi Paul as co-anchor of “Weekend New Day” on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The changes to CNN’s daytime schedule will take effect in April.

Keilar most recently anchored “CNN Right Now” from 1-3 p.m. weekdays. Prior to that, she was CNN’s White House correspondent during the Obama Administration.

CNN announced changes to its weekday morning and dayside lineup Wednesday, including new assignments for Victor Blackwell, Ana Cabrera, Alisyn Camerota and Brianna Keilar. The news network also unveiled new roles for Jim Acosta and Boris Sanchez on weekends, with all changes effective in April.

The net said Laura Jarrett and Christine Romans will continue to anchor Early Start from 5-6 am.
