Image
The concluding part of season two of Wednesday; the story of Charlie Sheen’s redemption; a clash between the two greatest super middleweights in the world; an A-list crime drama starring Jude Law and Jason Bateman; a lavish period drama from the creator of Peaky Blinders; and the third season of one of the most talked-about Japanese sci-fi shows are among the highlights of the new film and TV projects hitting Netflix in September.

Starting the month off strong is part two of season two of Wednesday, that hits Netflix on Sept. 3. There’s no need to introduce this absolute monster hit for the streamer, as seemingly everyone is watching — the first half of Wednesday season two delivered 50 million views worldwide, the most views for an English-language show’s opening week on the streamer since season one of Wednesday. Part two kicks off with “Hide and Woe Seek,” the 13th...

Jude Law and Jason Bateman are in deep in the trailer for the Netflix limited series Black Rabbit
Image
Funnily enough, I had recently binged through classic episodes of Arrested Development and seeing Jason Bateman in this trailer reminds me of how he can bounce back and forth from comedy to drama pretty easily. Netflix has just dropped the trailer to Black Rabbit, which sees Bateman get mixed up with the worst kind of people and his brother, played here by Jude Law, is attempting to help square things. The 8-episode limited series is also executive produced by Law and Bateman, and is set to stream on Netflix on September 18.

The official synopsis from Netflix reads,

“Set against the backdrop of New York City’s high-pressure nightlife scene, Black Rabbit centers around two brothers who learn just how far family, and the pursuit of success, can push them to the edge. Time Is Running Out To Watch 'Slow Horses' Star's Ultimate Thriller Series
Image
In the action thriller Gangs of London, the city is ripe for the taking, and the gangs will do anything to get a piece of it — or the entire thing. Sope Dirisu is known for his performance in the spy thriller Slow Horses, but he's also the gritty lead of Gangs of London, where he's starred since the show debuted in 2020. It is one of the most brutally action-packed dramas out there, and viewers have been enjoying the first two seasons on Netflix. A co-production of the UK's Sky and the US's AMC+, the show was added to Netflix to put it in front of more viewers. The bad news is that UK subscribers will soon lose access to the first two seasons, as they are set to leave Netflix. If you're one of them, you'd be wise to lock in.

Three seasons of the show have aired so far,...

12 Horror Movies Like ‘Weapons’ You Have to Watch at Least Once
Image
Zach Cregger’s mind-bending, mystery-horror Weapons isn’t just another scary movie; it’s the kind that crawls under your skin and refuses to leave. Written, directed, and co-produced by Cregger, the movie brings together an A-list ensemble of Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Benedict Wong, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, and Amy Madigan.

Weapons kick off when seventeen kids from the same third-grade class vanish at exactly 2:17 am in a quiet Pennsylvania town. What follows is a tense, slow-burn descent into witchcraft, hypnosis, and a finale so wildly unhinged you’ll definitely question every neighbor you’ve ever trusted.

Released by Warner Bros. on August 8, 2025, and backed by a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score, the movie has already raked in $70 million at the box office, proving Cregger knows how to keep audiences hooked, horrified, and a bit paranoid. If you have watched Weapons and want to chase the same thrill, or are...

No, but seriously, Netflix is definitely doing its big one with its slate of horror flicks this month. They’ve got one of the most iconic films from O.G. horror filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock, as well as the Philippou brothers’ freakishly scary “Talk to Me” and Parker Finn’s grinny goodie “Smile.” But then you add Jordan Peele’s history-making “Us?”

Monte-Carlo Television Festival Chief Laurent Puons on Why the 64th Edition Stands Out
Image
The 64th edition of the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, the world’s oldest TV festival, opened Friday. Variety spoke to Laurent Puons, the festival’s general manager, about what he has planned.

The festival, which Puons says exists to “celebrate excellence in global television,” is a triple threat: first, it’s a public festival and encourages a high level of engagement with the fans; second, it is a gathering point for European press, where TV companies can promote their shows; and third, it provides an opportunity for members of the industry to meet each other and attend topical panels as part of the Business Content program.

The festival has a trump card up its sleeve: its patron is Prince Albert II of Monaco, who attends both the opening and closing ceremonies. Among the festival guests he will welcome at the Grimaldi Forum this year are Robin Wright, Judith Light, Rachel Griffiths,...

Prince Albert said: “For more than six decades, the Monte-Carlo Television Festival has accompanied the evolution of audiovisual production. This 64th edition reflects that legacy, with a demanding international lineup and a strong presence of talent from around the world.

“Today more than ever, access to what makes this industry so rich — its content — is essential. Our festival remains a privileged venue to highlight innovation, creativity, and the remarkable talent of television’s artists and professionals.”

The ceremony host, Genie Godula, had kicked off the evening by introducing the juries of the Golden Nymph Awards. The fiction jury,...

Stars and the Sea: THR’s Cannes Film Festival Portfolio With Scarlett Johansson, Harris Dickinson and Zoey Deutch
Image
“Cinema is magic.” So said veteran filmmaker Richard Linklater when the lights came up inside the Grand Lumiére Theatre and he was handed a microphone following an electric 10-minute standing ovation for his Nouvelle Vague, Linklater’s love letter to French moviemaking. But the phrase works when applied to the events of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, which once again displayed the big-screen’s spellbinding charms. While this year may have delivered the most politically charged festival in recent memory, the glamour glittered just the same. To capture the stars off the red carpet, The Hollywood Reporter once again partnered with award-winning visual storyteller Julian Ungano for an exclusive festival portfolio. The veteran lensman worked up his own special blend of magic thanks to intimate portraits of Scarlett Johansson and her Eleanor the Great team of June Squibb and Erin Kellyman, Linklater’s French-speaking star Zoey Deutch, Harris Dickinson and his Urchin collaborator Frank Dillane,...

‘My Father’s Shadow’ Review: First-Ever Nigerian Film at Cannes Is an Elegant and Stirring Ode to Lagos
Image
Akinola Davies Jr.’s gorgeous debut My Father’s Shadow takes place during a consequential day in Nigerian politics. It’s June 12, 1993, and the country is holding its first election since a coup in the early 80s. One president represents a new hope for the postcolonial nation, while the other would maintain the incumbent military rule. While the frenzied, anxious energy of history in the making permeates the air, two young boys attempt to stave off boredom.

For Akin (Godwin Chimerie Egbo) and Remi (Chibuike Marvellous Egbo), brothers living on the outskirts of Lagos, this day, at first, feels like any other. When we meet the brothers, they are lounging in front of their home, bickering about sharing toys and trying to keep cool in the punishing heat.

There is a familiar lyricism to the way that Davies Jr., working with cinematographer Jermaine Edwards, opens his film. The shots are intimate...

‘My Father’s Shadow’ Review: A Mournful Miracle Of A Film Evokes Heartbreak Similar To ‘Aftersun’ But 1990s Lagos, Nigeria [Cannes]
Image
No matter how surreptitiously Folarin (Sope Dirisu) thinks he’s acting, his perceptive young sons Remi (Chibuike Marvellous Egbo) and Akin (Godwin Egbo) pick up on the nuances of his behavior. A flirtatious smile with a woman who’s not their mother cues in their suspicions, for example. That observant childhood gaze, exploring every space and instance with wide-eyed curiosity, defines “My Father’s Shadow,” filmmaker Akinola Davies’ strikingly affecting semiautobiographical first feature co-written with his brother Wale Davies.

My Father’s Shadow Review: Childhood Innocence Meets Political Upheaval
Der Bestatter (2013)
June 24, 1993, Nigeria teeters on the edge of hope and upheaval as citizens await the results of an election that promises a return to civilian rule. Eleven-year-old Remi and his eight-year-old brother Akin find themselves whisked away from their quiet village to the roar of Lagos streets by their father, Folarin, a man they barely know.

What begins as a promise to collect overdue wages for his work soon takes on greater significance when they learn the ballots favor the people’s candidate, Mko Abiola—only to have those hopes dashed by a sudden military annulment.

The boys’ wide-eyed excitement collides with growing tension as they witness both the city’s bright promise and its darker undercurrents, setting the stage for an emotionally charged exploration of family bonds, political turmoil, and a father’s attempt to share a pivotal moment with his children.

My Father’s Shadow review – subtle and intelligent coming-of-age tale set in 1993 Nigeria
Akinola Davies
Cannes film festival

British-Nigerian film-maker Akinola Davies Jr makes a strong directorial debut with this deft and intriguing tale of an absent father briefly reunited with his two young sons

Once upon a time in Lagos might be an alternative title for this fervent and vividly intense child’s-eye-view movie from first-time film-maker Akinola Davies Jr. It’s a transparently personal project and a coming-of-age film in its (traumatised) way, a moving account of how, just for one day, two young boys glimpse the real life and real history of their father who has been mostly absent for much of their lives – and how they come to love and understand him just at the moment when they come to see his flaws and his weaknesses.

It is 1993 in Nigeria, a tense time with the country on the edge of disorder due to the imminent presidential election, the first since a military takeover 10 years previously.

Akinola Davies Jr. Directs the First Nigerian Film in Cannes’ Official Selection, ‘My Father’s Shadow’ — Watch Clip
Image
In 78 years of the Cannes Film Festival, it’s hard to believe a Nigerian film has never been part of the Official Selection before. Enter Akinola Davies Jr. to correct that history with his feature debut “My Father’s Shadow,” premiering this weekend as part of Un Certain Regard. Set over the course of a single day in Lagos during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis, the film is a semiautobiographical tale from Davies. IndieWire shares a first look clip below.

The story follows a father, estranged from his two young sons, as they travel through the massive city while political unrest threatens their journey home.

Davies is a visual artist who writes the film with his brother Wale Davies — they both lost their father when they were young — and directs star Sopé Dìrísù in a haunting thriller about political unrest encroaching on a family’s personal journey.

As Wale said in a press statement,...

Cannes One To Watch: How ‘My Father’s Shadow’ Filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr. Crafted A Nigerian Family Story In Buzzed-About Debut
Image
Akinola Davies Jr. initially declined BBC Film head Eva Yates’ suggestion that he make a feature film. Instead, he shot the 18-minute Lizard, which won the 2021 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Grand Jury Prize.

However, Yates got her wish eventually, and the result is My Father’s Shadow — Davies’ feature directorial debut that is premiering at Cannes in Un Certain Regard. Davies co-wrote the film with his brother Wale Davies, who came up with the story before they collaborated on Lizard.

Shot in Lagos, Nigeria, it stars stage and screen actor Sopé Dìrísù as a dad who takes his two young sons into the bustling metropolis as unrest erupts over the country’s controversial June 12th, 1993 presidential election.

Davies started out as a runner, then self-financed music videos for others, before attending the New York Film Academy and shooting commercials and music videos. He realized that if he were to...

Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy in The Gorge (2025)
The Gorge (2025) Ending Explained: Who are Levi and Drasa’s Employers?
Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy in The Gorge (2025)
The Gorge (2025), directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Zach Dean, feels like a rare breed in today’s Hollywood — the kind of bold, high-concept B-movie that major studios have largely abandoned in favor of safer IP-driven projects. It’s a genre mash-up that blends action, romance, and horror, channeling the spirit of old-school thrillers while still feeling distinctly modern. Think of it as a video game fever dream brought to life, but with heart, style, and a surprisingly sharp emotional edge.

What sets The Gorge apart is its willingness to embrace extremes — operatic love, kinetic violence, eerie atmosphere — without ever winking too hard at the audience. Instead of parodying genre tropes, it uses them earnestly, creating a heightened reality where intense feelings and life-or-death stakes collide. Derrickson brings his horror sensibilities to the fore with striking visuals and suspenseful set pieces, while Dean’s script leans into pulpy storytelling with unexpected tenderness.

Tom Hardy's New Savage Action Thriller Debuts With a Divisive Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Tom Hardy has recently been making headlines for his gritty performance in MobLand, the latest crime thriller series from Guy Ritchie, but he’s got a new movie that just debuted on Netflix. Hardy stars alongside Jessie Mei Li and Justin Cornwell in Havoc, the new conspiracy thriller following a bruised detective who must fight his way out of a drug deal gone wrong. The film began playing on Netflix last night, and now enough reviews for the film have come in that it has finally earned a Rotten Tomatoes score. Havoc currently sits at 67% from critics on the aggregate site, which avoids the infamous “rotten” tag but also isn’t high enough to land inside the top 15 for Hardy’s career. The film has yet to be given a rating by general audiences.

Havoc was written and directed by Gareth Evans, who first made his directorial debut nearly 20 years ago on Footsteps,...

Aaron Pierre Secured Lanterns Role On The Merits Of His Audition Not Rebel Ridge Buzz
Image
The casting of Aaron Pierre as John Stewart in HBO's forthcoming Lanterns series has prompted speculation regarding the decisive factors influencing the network's choice, specifically what carries more weight- previous performances or audition dynamics?

When questioned about whether Rebel Ridge played a pivotal role in Pierre landing the role of John Stewart, James Hawes, director of the pilot and second episode, offered a nuanced perspective.

During the casting period last September, Pierre was reportedly considered alongside a competitive field of talent, including Damson Idris (F1), Stephan James (21 Bridges), Sope Dirisu (Slow Horses), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Chevalier), and Toheeb Jimoh (Ted Lasso).

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Hawes indicated that Pierre's audition ultimately proved compelling, securing the consensus of the entire casting team.

"I honestly think he did it totally individually in the room. With some chemistry castings and the like, it just felt like he would inhabit the role.

10 Shocking Horror Movie Twists We’ll Remember Forever
Image
Horror is an incredibly versatile genre, including everything from gory slasher B-movies to taut psychological thrillers. But whether these stories are about supernatural ghouls or bloodthirsty psychopaths, they're equally likely to pack a shocking reveal in their final act. In fact, many even save the beat for the very last scene, sending their shell-shocked audience out to process what they've just witnessed.

A shocking ending isn't an ironclad requirement for horror movies, some films relish showing brutality in full view. But the genre does lend itself to a twist, as a sense of confusion and uncertainty feeds directly into fear and anxiety. When done properly, an amazing twist can completely recontextualize a film and linger with the viewers for years.

Stars: Anya Taylor-Joy, Miles Teller, Sigourney Weaver, Sope Dirisu | Written by Zach Dean | Directed by Scott Derrickson

Drasa is a sniper for hire and business has been good. At least until she finds out her identity has been compromised. Needing to drop out of site for a while she accepts a year-long assignment operating a watchtower overlooking a mysterious gorge that doesn’t exist on any maps.

Directly across from it is another tower, this one manned by Levi a former Marine sniper. He’s been recruited by Bartholomew who tells him its a chance for him to pull himself out of the bottle and get his life back together.

Why are the towers there? That has something to do with what’s in the gorge, creatures referred to as The Hollow Men, after a poem by T.S. Eliot. Nobody knows what they are, but they wiped out a force...

The Gorge recently premiered on Apple TV+, and the romantic action flick follows two elite snipers who fall in love while protecting the world against an unseen evil that lurks in the expansive chasm below them. Tasked with guarding either side of a gorge over the course of a year, Levi (Miles Teller) and Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy) each reside in their respective towers and are barred from any communication with the other side. Levi guards the west side, while Drasa guards the east side. However, they aren’t meant to keep people from getting in. Rather, they must prevent anything inside the gorge from getting out.

After months of keeping to themselves, the pair find a way to get to know one another despite the 600 meters between them.

Review: The Gorge is a Surprisingly Sweet Creature Feature
Image
What do T.S. Eliot, Annihilation, and romantic undead tales have in common? Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge. A threatening brand of military meet-cute makes for any genre fan’s Valentine’s Day treat—more love stories should have feral creatures and desperate stakes. Derrickson’s vision for Zach Dean’s multifaceted screenplay brings supernatural desolation and warm smiles in equal scoops, although the two-hour-plus duration is challenging. It’s a film with lofty ambitions meant to excite, scare, and woo that succeeds across the board, but a balancing act that honors all intentions can feel wobbly.

Overlooking a mist-cloaked gorge are two concrete outposts—one Eastern, one Western—with only a single patrol personnel assigned for one-year rotations. Ex-Marine private contractor Levi (Miles Teller) and a Lithuanian sniper working for Russia named Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy) are the latest crew, taking their respective duties in opposite towers. The catch? They don’t know each other exists,...

The Gorge – Review
Image
Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller in The Gorge. Courtesy of Apple TV+

Two elite sharpshooters-turned-assassins are hired separately for a secret mission to guard either side of a gorge that contains a mysterious threat in remote, secret location. On one side of the gorge is ex-Marine Levi (Miles Teller), hired by the U.S. Army, and on the other is Lithuanian assassin Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy), hired by the Russians, in a secret agreement between the West and the East that has persisted since the early years of the Cold War. This unlikely agreement was made to contain a threat so deadly that both sides want it confined to this remote gorge, and this decades-long arrangement is so secret, even the U.S. Presidents were unaware of it. Each year, countries in the West and nations in the East send a new guard to man the tower on their side of the gorge.

Miles Teller at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
The Gorge review – guarding hellish monsters is aphrodisiac in silly horror
Miles Teller at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy flirt over an abyss full of creatures in a slickly made but increasingly dumb Apple mockbuster

On a Valentine’s Day when studios and streamers are steering clear of traditional romance, Apple TV’s The Gorge feels weirdly traditional in comparison. In any other year a film about two snipers holding guard over an abyss filled with monsters wouldn’t feel like standard date night fare but there are more traditional romcom beats here than one would expect and ultimately want.

When the film, from The Black Phone and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, starts off in genre territory, there’s some low-level fun to be had. The setup has a non-triggering Covid-era feel to it, as Miles Teller’s soldier-for-hire Levi finds himself an unlikely new gig, spending the next year alone in a watchtower. In a brief handover from an underused Sope Dirisu,...

‘The Gorge’ Review: So Close, Yet So Far
Image
Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge does well for itself upfront with its setup, with a top-tier mercenary named Levi (Miles Teller) accepting a mission to be the sole protector of a secluded mini-fortress in an unknown country, nestled at the edge of the titular gorge. The gist of the rules is that he must remain on watch for a single year, he’s to have no communication with the outside world aside from a monthly check-in from his higher-ups, he must eliminate anything that climbs out of the gorge with extreme prejudice, and there’s to be no contact with his counterpart on the other side of the gorge.

That last rule proves a bit difficult for Levi to follow when he finds out that the fortress on the other side is occupied by Drasa (Anya-Taylor Joy), an attractive Lithuanian assassin tasked with roughly the same mandate as him. Soon,...

'The Gorge' Review: Mediocre Sci-Fi Blends Every Genre
Image
The Gorgeis kinda like that old saying often attributed to the writer Mark Twain, “If you don't like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes.” This multi-genre tale begins by establishing a tantalizing sci-fi premise, then setting it aside for a low-flame romance between top-billed Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, then ditching that for a final hour of increasingly mindless action. It’s a genre mashup where each component never quite makes it over the hump, although there are pleasures to be gleaned in a straight-to-streaming sort of way.

The film's central mystery — namely what evil lurks at the bottom of a fog-shrouded gorge — keeps us engaged until the mystery is solved, at which point the film becomes less credible and less interesting. Directed with flair if not distinction by Scott Derrickson, The Gorge maintains interest but does not reward it. In the annals of recent...

The Gorge Director Reveals Which Video Games Inspired The Anya Taylor-Joy Movie
Image
The Gorge director Scott Derrickson opened up about his newest sci-fi action horror movie, which will feature Golden Globe winner Anya Taylor-Joy as an elite sniper tasked with guarding the gateway to hell. This marks Derrickson’s first high-profile action movie in a while, after directing Doctor Strange in 2016.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Derrickson confirmed that he was inspired by several popular horror video games like Silent Hill and Until Dawn, during the development and production of The Gorge. "I love those games, and I do think that gaming has sort of set the bar for gun-play action, especially if you're really with a single character or two characters, you kind of can't beat it," he shared. "I think that the challenge of the movie was not letting it fall into just the straight, chaotic stimulus of gaming-type action. The challenge was to have that kind of stimulus and power and really utilize that.

'Sinister' Director Reveals Video Games That Inspired Horror Movie 'The Gorge'
Image
There's just something about Valentine's Day and horror movies that go well together, and this Feb. 14, Sinister director Scott Derrickson is unleashing his latest on Apple TV+ subscribers: The Gorge. Now, ahead of the movie's release, Derrickson is breaking down how his new horror flick took a few cues from a couple of hit video games.

Speaking with GamesRadar+, The Black Phone director was asked if The Gorge was intentionally mimicking the aesthetic of video games like Silent Hill and Until Dawn, two classics that have been a favorite of fans for years. Early reviews for the film have already made the same comparison, and Derrickson wasn't shy about letting folks know that, yes, The Gorge is modeled somewhat on those games, especially when it comes to its action.

I love those games, and I do think that gaming has sort of set the bar for gunplay action, especially if...

Sope Dirisu to Lead Akinola Davies Jr.’s ‘My Father’s Shadow’ for Element Pictures, BBC Film, Mubi
Image
Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù has landed a leading film role.

The fast-rising British actor — best-known for “Gangs of London” but recently seen in the third season of “Slow Horses” — will appear in “My Father’s Shadow,” the feature directorial debut of British-Nigerian filmmaker Akinola Davies, whose Sundance-winning short film “Lizard” was BAFTA nominated.

The film, co-written by Davies and his brother Wale Davies (who also co-wrote “Lizard”), is a co-production between “Normal People” and “Poor Things” banner Element Pictures, alongside BBC Film and the British Film Institute, and last year wrapped production in Nigeria, where it shot on location in Lagos. Rachel Dargavel, who produced “Lizard,” produces for Element. Mubi has already acquired the film for multiple territories, including North America, U.K., Ireland, and Turkey.

Variety understands that the film is semi-autobiographical and is about the relationship between a father and his two young boys over the course of a day in the Nigerian city.
