Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to the nation’s capital and forcing a federal law enforcement takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department is not only terrorizing residents and workers, it’s also harming local businesses. Washington, D.C., restaurants are experiencing significant drops in reservations, and bars are seeing fewer customers.
Online reservations for D.C. restaurants plunged more than 25 percent in the days immediately after Trump announced the takeover of D.C. police for the first time in the country’s history, according to OpenTable data, Wusa 9’s Jordan Fischer reported.

National Guard troops that President Donald Trump has sent to Washington, D.C., “may be armed” a White House official told CBS News on Saturday, a departure from a previous statement.
Officials said earlier this week that the troops would not be armed, and that weapons would not be in their vehicles, either. “Weapons are available if needed but will remain in the armory,” the Army said in a press release on Thursday.
On Saturday, the Trump administration changed course, according to reports.

Alec Baldwin reacted with alarm to President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of the Washington, D.C., police department and his deployment of troops to the city — saying they are examples of Trump’s “insane moves” to “deflect from his inadequacy.”
“This idea of federalizing the D.C. police department, it’s of such grave concern to me,” Baldwin said in a TikTok video posted Thursday.
The White House on Thursday said it would install an “emergency commissioner” overseeing the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and revoked policies that limited officers’ cooperation with federal immigration enforcement officials. On Friday, the attorney general of D.C. sued the Trump administration over the “unlawful” moves.
In the TikTok video, Baldwin wondered what the D.C. police situation would presage. “What’s gonna happen next? Is Trump going to federalize the New York City Police Department?” he said. “What’s after that? Chicago, L.

A new directive signed last week by President Donald Trump gives the Pentagon authorization to use military force against Latin American drug cartels designated as terrorist organizations, according to administration sources.
A U.S. official familiar with the matter confirmed to Rolling Stone certain details regarding the Trump-signed directive, which was first reported by The New York Times. Other knowledgeable sources, working in or close to this iteration of the Trump White House, say that unless Mexico gives Trump what he wants, this administration is serious about attacking its neighbor to the south.

The Justice Department has fired one of its own and charged him with felony assault after he threw a sub sandwich at a federal officer.
A video of Sean Charles Dunn throwing a sandwich at the chest of an officer amid President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of law enforcement in Washington, D.C., went viral earlier this week. Dunn, at point blank range, hurled the sandwich at the officers chest before attempting to sprint away. Dunn reportedly told cops: “I did it. I threw a sandwich.”

The Trump administration appears to have hit another dead end in its desperate efforts to provide some semblance of closure in the years-long saga of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
On Monday, U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer of the Southern District of New York denied the Justice Department’s order to unseal grand jury records related to the prosecution of Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence on sex trafficking charges. On Monday, a federal judge denied a request from the Trump administration to unseal grand jury materials used to charge late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime procurer Ghislaine Maxwell, on the basis that there is nothing in the grand jury record that would provide further information on the case.
On July 18, Attorney General Pam Bondi petitioned for the release amid the ongoing controversy over the Epstein case.
Justice Department lawyers argued in court filings that the Maxwell case warranted the release of the typically sealed grand jury transcripts and exhibits, a request that New York Judge Paul Engelmayer denied.
Englemayer, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, wrote, “The government’s invocation of special circumstances, however, fails at the threshold.”
“Its entire premise — that the Maxwell grand jury materials would bring to light meaningful new information about Epstein’s and Maxwell’s crimes, or the Government’s investigation into them — is demonstrably false.

Updated: Donald Trump said Monday that he was deploying the National Guard in Washington, D.C. and placing the city’s Metropolitan Police under federal control.
Portraying the capital city as a crime-ridden hellhole, Trump told reporters that the city “is becoming a situation of complete and total lawlessness.”
“We’re taking our capital back,” Trump said.
Attorney General Pam Bondi will oversee the city’s police department. She was present along with Jeanine Pirro, the former Fox News host, FBI director Kash Patel, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
While there is a crime problem in D.C., and while stats are meaningless to victims, the rate actual fell last year, per the Metropolitan Police, with violent crime down 26%. Back in April, Ed Martin, then serving as Trump’s acting U.S. attorney in the district, trumpeted the decrease.

The visit marks an escalation in his battle with California Gov. Now, he’s going for the jugular.

“If you tell the base of people, who support you, of deep state treasonous crimes, election interference, blackmail, and rich, powerful elite evil cabals, then you must take down every enemy of The People,” Greene told Trump, who had close ties with Epstein, in an X post on Monday. “If not. The base will turn, and there’s no going back. Dangling bits of red meat no longer satisfies. They want the whole steak dinner and will accept nothing else.”
Greene’s post comes as the president directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek an order to unseal the grand jury transcripts in Epstein’s criminal case.

President Donald Trump appears to be growing increasingly desperate to turn the national conversation away from his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He spent the weekend suggesting prominent Democrats should be prosecuted over bogus right-wing conspiracy theories, and today he said it outright.
“Whether it’s right or wrong, it’s time to go after people,” he told reporters in the Oval Office.

Maria Farmer twice reported Donald Trump’s connection with sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein to the FBI, shining light on how the president may be mentioned in the Epstein files held by the Justice Department.
Farmer, who worked for Epstein and recently spoke to The New York Times, first went to law enforcement in 1996 to tell them that Epstein and his longtime partner, Ghislaine Maxwell, sexually assaulted her. At the time, Farmer said, she had recently learned that her sister, then a teenager, had a disturbing interaction at Epstein’s New Mexico ranch.

On the morning of May 2, 2025, supporters of Washington Senate Bill 5375 were ushered through the massive concrete arches and up the grand staircases of the Washington state Capitol — the veins of Alaskan Tokeen marble guiding them past oil portraits and century-old busts — to the governor’s conference room on the second floor.
Inside, amid the dark wood paneling and gleaming seal of the state, Bob Ferguson, Washington’s new governor and former attorney general, addressed the small crowd of advocates, lawmakers, and child-abuse survivors who had gathered behind him.

Donald Trump is sick of fielding questions about Jeffrey Epstein. But his efforts to quash lingering interest in the case of the late sex offender by downplaying it as some kind of “hoax” perpetrated by political enemies including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have failed to satisfy Maga diehards who want the White House to release bombshell materials implicating powerful elites in Epstein’s crimes, or evidence that he was killed in his jail cell in 2019 to protect those same people.
It’s a crisis of the administration’s own making.

Update: Just over a day after the top prosecutor in the Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jeffrey Epstein cases was unceremoniously fired by Donald Trump’s Justice Department, Maurene Comey had a warning for America.
“If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain,” the now former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York said in a statement about the despotic shift occurring under the ex-Celebrity Apprentice host’s latest White House regime. “Do not let that happen. Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought.”
While never mentioning Potus by name, the daughter of longtime Trump foil and former FBI Director James Comey made it very clear what her verdict was on her pink slipping – justice in America is in big trouble.

Updated, with additional Trump comment: Donald Trump said that he planned to sue Rupert Murdoch’s “ass off” after The Wall Street Journal published a story about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The Journal reported earlier on Thursday on a birthday album that was given to Epstein in 2003, featured collected letters from some of his friends. Among the letters was one bearing Trump’s name that “contains several lines of typewritten text framed by the outline of a naked woman, which appears to be hand-drawn with a heavy marker,” the Journal reported, adding that a “pair of small arcs denotes the woman’s breasts, and the future president’s signature is a squiggly ‘Donald’ below her waist, mimicking pubic hair.”
Informed of the letter, Trump denied writing it, and told the Journal that he would sue them if they went forward with the story.

Stephen Colbert weighed in on the conspiracy theories surrounding Jeffrey Epstein on the Wednesday, July 16, episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. To kick off his monologue, he said, “I don’t know what you all are talking about, but everybody I talk to is talking about what Donald Trump doesn’t want to talk about. So let’s talk about it.” He, of course, was referring to “the conspiracy surrounding” Epstein following the recent claim made by Attorney General Pam Bondi that the “Epstein Files” don’t actually exist. Epstein died in prison by apparent suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial. Colbert pointed out, “For years before [Trump] was re-elected and recently since [the Republicans] all got in office, a bunch of high-ranking people in Trump’s administration have kept promising to release the files surrounding Jeffrey Epstein, his mysterious clients, and his suspicious death, but now, recently, for reasons that I legally cannot think of,...

House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republicans broke with the Trump administration’s decision to keep the lid shut on the government’s files investigating convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Johnson called on the Department of Justice to release documents and information related to the probe into the disgraced financier, who was found dead in his jail cell in 2019, and said that Attorney General Pam Bondi needs to explain previous remarks she made on the issue. This is the first time Johnson, a close Trump ally, has spoken so publicly in opposition to the president.

President Donald Trump is now making some major claims.
The 79-year-old President of the United States said that the Justice Department’s files on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were “made up” by former President Barack Obama, ex-fbi director James Comey and Joe Biden‘s administration.
Amid backlash from supporters demanding to know what’s in the files after the Justice Department and FBI claimed that there was no evidence of an Epstein “client list,” Trump was asked whether U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi had told him that he was cited in the Epstein docs.
“No, no,” he said, adding that the Attorney General provided “us just a very quick briefing” in terms of “the credibility of the different things that they’ve seen.”

Kevin Spacey, who walked away from a cloud of sexual assault allegations and a surprising number of dead bodies with his freedom, if not his fortune, is calling for the release of “the Epstein files,” because oh that’s right, his name also appeared in the Epstein flight logs.

You might think this whole thing couldn’t get any more absurd, but we’re just getting started. Kevin Spacey is calling for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, over a year after his name appeared alongside other major Hollywood stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Cate Blanchett in Epstein’s unsealed court documents. None of the stars mentioned in the court documents were accused of facilitating Epstein’s sex trafficking ring in any capacity. But speculation persisted on social media, especially about Spacey given the sexual misconduct allegations against him.

Jon Stewart said on the Monday night episode of “The Daily Show” that Maga is in “open revolt” against Donald Trump over his failure to deliver the long-awaited Jeffrey Epstein files. The FBI and the Department of Justice issued a statement earlier this month saying the Epstein files do not exist despite Pam Bondi, Trump’s attorney general, declaring in February that she had been given Epstein’s client list from the FBI. Bondi said at the time that “Americans have a right to know” about the files.
“MAGAworld, for the first time in memory, isn’t just slavishly acquiescing to Trump’s reality distortion field,” Stewart noted about the rare Maga backlash against Trump.

One major news story was conspicuously absent: Jeffrey Epstein and the growing fallout over the Trump administration’s handling of the case. The previous week, an FBI memo was released that effectively brought the case to an inconclusive close. The report stated that the “systematic review revealed no incriminating ‘client list,'” and that there was “no credible evidence” Epstein had blackmailed prominent individuals. “We did not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties,” the memo concluded, essentially declaring there was nothing more to pursue in the Epstein case. Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino is reportedly considering resigning amid internal tensions within the Trump administration following the release of a controversial Department of Justice memo related to the Jeffrey Epstein case investigation.
Bongino, a former right-wing podcaster, frequently floated conspiracy theories about Epstein on his show. In 2022, he was banned by YouTube for spreading misinformation about Covid-19.
Bongino, Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles were involved in a heated confrontation at the White House in a meeting earlier this week.
