Isaac Hayes Didn’t Know What ‘South Park’ Was Until His First Recording Session
Image
Before being written off of the show completely — for reasons that have been recently called into question — the late Isaac Hayes was a massively important contributor to South Park’s early years.

The legendary soul singer famously voiced Chef, South Park Elementary’s resident cook, who has a penchant for crooning highly inappropriate tunes, and was apparently close personal friends with Sir Elton John and Ozzy Osbourne.

As Trey Parker and Matt Stone revealed in a South Park DVD commentary, casting Hayes as Chef was a key part of their original vision for the show. So, naturally, they were thrilled when he agreed to do it — although they were less thrilled when it turned out that he hadn’t actually agreed to do it. “We knew we wanted Chef all along,” Parker explained. “He was a character we talked about even in college, and Isaac Hayes was our first choice.

Martin Scorsese Joins Friends and Colleagues to Honor Jonathan Kaplan: ‘He Was a Very Special Filmmaker’
Image
On August 1, at the age of 77, one of the Hollywood’s most impressive filmmakers died. Reports dropped on several sites, but the news cycle went on, and Jonathan Kaplan’s name faded from the headlines. I believe his work, however, deserves longer reflection.

IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson connected me to Kaplan’s daughter Molly, who in turn directed me to some of Kaplan’s closest friends and colleagues. Thanks to their participation, I was able to stitch together remembrances that better describe Kaplan than a simple obituary or list of credits could accomplish.

We are talking about a resume, though, that includes some buzzy titles — “Unlawful Entry,” “Bad Girls,” and a series you might have heard of called “E.R” among them. He was nominated for five Emmys. He directed Jodie Foster to her first Oscar win in 1988’s “The Accused.” “Love Field,” in 1992, brought Michelle Pfeiffer her third nomination.

Why Isaac Hayes' Chef Left South Park
Image
"South Park" fans still look back fondly at Chef Jerome McElroy, or just Chef as the kids called him. Voiced by Isaac Hayes, Chef was a major presence throughout the first eight seasons. He was there to offer the kids advice and lend a sympathetic ear. But at a certain point, the character's presence in the series dwindled, and in season 10, the show killed him off.

How'd they kill him? Well, they had the wooden bridge he was walking on get struck by lightning. Chef, burning alive from the subsequent fire, fell down a canyon while hitting every jagged rock on the way down. He landed on a sharp tree branch that impaled him, and was then mauled to death by both a mountain lion and a grizzly bear. It's the sort of death that immediately makes you wonder if there was something going on behind the scenes. Why such a sudden,...

Jonathan Kaplan, Director of ‘The Accused’ and ‘ER,’ Dies at 77
Image
Jonathan Kaplan, who directed Jodie Foster to a best actress Oscar in The Accused and received five Emmy nominations for his work as a helmer and producer on ER, has died. He was 77.

Kaplan died Friday at his home in Los Angeles after a battle with liver cancer, his daughter, Molly Kaplan, told The Hollywood Reporter. “He was a loving, supportive father,” she said.

Kaplan, whose parents both worked in show business and whose uncle was Oscar-winning actor Van Heflin, served an apprenticeship with famed B-movie producer Roger Corman and then directed the blaxploitation classic Truck Turner (1974), starring Isaac Hayes, Yaphet Kotto and Nichelle Nichols.

Kaplan also guided Michelle Pfeiffer to a best actress Oscar nomination in the 1960s-set Love Field (1992), and his directing résumé included the Shirley Muldowney biopic Heart Like a Wheel (1983), starring Bonnie Bedelia and Beau Bridges; Bad Girls (1987), the distaff Western starring Madeleine Stowe, Mary Stuart Masterson,...

Isaac Hayes Was Forced by Scientology Leaders to Quit ‘South Park,’ Says Son
Image
It has been almost 20 years since Isaac Hayes left his voice role of Chef in “South Park.” And it has also been 17 years since Hayes died at the age of 65. Now, the legendary performer’s son Isaac Hayes III has addressed the long-held rumor as to why exactly his father Hayes left the popular Comedy Central series.

It should first be noted that Hayes quit following the controversy regarding an episode that skewered Scientology entitled “Trapped in the Closet”, in which Stan joins Scientology after recruiters say he is the reincarnation of church founder L. Ron Hubbard. Scientology has long tentacles in the entertainment industry, even more publicly so in 2005 when the episode aired. Famous members like Tom Cruise and John Travolta were sent up in the episode. Years later, during the podcast “Basic!,” “South Park” co-creator Matt Stone explained why the writers chose to spoof Scientology.

“Everyone knew Scientology was so litigious,...

Son of 'South Park' Actor Isaac Hayes Breaks Silence on Dad's Departure from Show
Image
Isaac Hayes III is opening up about why his late father stopped voicing Chef on South Park.

Singer Isaac Hayes voiced Chef on South Park up until his sudden departure in 2006. According to his son, Isaac Hayes III, his father was not the one who made the decision to leave the animated series.

Keep reading to find out more…

Isaac shared a post on his Facebook account. In the post, he shared that his late father suffered a stroke in 2005 and was left unable to communicate, meaning that he would have had no way to leave the show and no one in their family made the decision for him.

“After the episode Trapped in the Closet aired in 2005, my father suffered a stroke just a few months later that left him unable to speak or make decisions on his own. He was not in any condition to resign from anything.

Why 'South Park's Isaac Hayes Quit as Chef Over Scientology Jokes Revealed
Image
At a time when South Park has been hitting the headlines thanks to some chaotic shuffling at Paramount amid their Skydance merger, one of the biggest misconceptions about the show and one of its stars has continued to be believed despite being cleared up almost a decade ago: why did Isaac Hayes quit his beloved role as Chef? Now, Hayes’ son, also called Isaac, has once again reminded people of the truth behind his father’s departure from the series, which he says was nothing to do with Hayes himself.

In a lengthy post, Isaac Hayes III explained how, after suffering a stroke in 2006, which ultimately led to his death two years later, it was not his father that actually made the decision to quit South Park, but others from his Scientology circle who had been offended by some of the controversial show’s remarks about the religion. He wrote:

‘My Dad Would Have Never Quit That Show’: Isaac Hayes III on what ‘South Park’ Meant to His Father
Image
In South Park’s early days, there was just one adult the boys would turn to when they were in trouble. And even if he was in the middle of making sweet love to a beautiful woman, Chef would always answer their call.

Chef, famously played by soul music legend Isaac Hayes, was a key part of the show’s formula when South Park debuted, and his songs — from “I’m Gonna Make Love to You, Woman” to “Chocolate Salty Balls” — provided the earliest examples of the show’s musicality. Hayes was also the biggest name involved at the start (no one knew who Trey Parker and Matt Stone were back then).

Given Chef’s critical contributions to the show’s early success and how beloved the character was by South Park fans, his death — and Hayes’ controversial departure from the show — were all the more upsetting.

The story behind...

Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained Has A Secret Connection To Another Movie
Image
In addition to being one of the most acclaimed and influential filmmakers of the last 30 years, Quentin Tarantino is also notable for possessing encyclopedic knowledge of overall film history. The two-time Oscar-winning writer/director often uses his films as a canvas not just to express his artistic sensibilities, but also a chance to wax poetic about the major influences that have played an integral role in his development.

Much of Tarantino's filmography is connected within the same shared universe. Most notably, his breakout film "Reservoir Dogs" is set in the same continuity as "Pulp Fiction," given that the former features Victor "Vic" Vega/Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen), while Vic's brother, Vincent Vega (John Travolta), is featured in the latter. Tarantino previously had plans for a Vega Brothers film that never saw the light of day. Interestingly enough, one of Tarantino's most acclaimed films, "Django Unchained," has a secret connection...

A Seinfeld Actor Tried To Pitch His Own Spin-Off (And It Sounds Awful)
Image
It's not uncommon for recurring characters on a popular sitcom to receive successful spin-off shows. For example, "Happy Days" spawned "Laverne & Shirley" and "Mork & Mindy," the latter of which originated from what was first thought of as a "horrible" episode script.  On the other end of the spectrum, you've got shows like "Seinfeld," which drew impressive audiences back in the day but didn't give birth to any sort of spin-off series.

However, it wasn't for a lack of trying that the "show about nothing" has nothing by way of spin-offs. George Costanza actor Jason Alexander pitched a couple of spin-off ideas, one of which would have centered on Cosmo Kramer's (Michael Richards) lawyer, Jackie Chiles (Phil Morris), who was a parody of O.J. Simpson's defense attorney Johnnie Cochran. And as it turns out, Morris made a similar pitch, as he stated at a 1999 press event (via the...

Sitcom Cast Departures That Didn’t Hurt the Show One Bit
Image
When Steve Carell left The Office, the show never recovered. And when Chelsea Peretti left Brooklyn 99, a critical part of its cast’s dynamic was lost, which cost the show some of its edge. Usually, when a sitcom loses a character, no matter the reason, the show suffers. Sometimes, however, a departure is more akin to when a butcher trims the fat; the show is tightened up and, because time is no longer wasted on them, it’s an overall improved result, if anyone even notices at all.

Here are five such times where a character was removed from a sitcom, arguably for the better…

While actor Paul Schneider didn’t do anything wrong as the character Mark Brendanawicz on Parks and Recreation, he was meant to be a love interest for Leslie Knope, yet there was absolutely no chemistry between them. And...

Mel Novak, Bad Guys in ‘Game of Death’ and ‘Black Belt Jones,’ Dies at 90
Image
Mel Novak, the great movie villain known for his slick turns as the sniper Stick in Bruce Lee’s Game of Death, the gangster Blue Eyes in Jim Kelly’s Black Belt Jones and the informant Tony Montoya in Chuck Norris’ An Eye for an Eye, has died. He was 90.

Novak died Wednesday of natural causes at a hospice facility in Granada Hills, his daughter Nikol Conant told The Hollywood Reporter.

In a career that spanned seven decades, the charismatic Novak did lots of his own stunts, as in The Ultimate Warrior (1975), starring Yul Brynner and Max von Sydow. That was one of the four films he made with Enter the Dragon director Robert Clouse.

In his death scene for that post-apocalyptic adventure, “They covered me with peanut butter and sunflower seeds and then put 40 live rats on me,” Novak recalled in a 2018 interview. “I told their trainer, ‘If one of them bites me,...

Escape from New York (1981) Revisited – Sci-fi Action Movie Review
Image
We’ve discussed John Carpenter on this channel as much or more than nearly any other director. Some of his movies, like The Thing, have gotten a different type of show appreciation via discussions on its behind the scenes in a Wtf, a comparison with its novella source material, and a look at what its legacy is in a Deconstructing video, amongst a few others. Looking at his catalogue, there is a wealth of stuff that is firmly in the horror realm from Christine to In the Mouth of Madness, Prince of Darkness to Halloween. While he has some movies that are outside that wheelhouse like the western homage Assault on Precinct 13 or Academy Award winning sci-fi drama Starman, Escape from New York is something special. In addition to being one of my favorite films of all time, full stop, it’s also sneaky in its ability to horrify. While...

He was also featured in the 1988 film Tapeheads, starring John Cusack and Tim Robbins.

Sam Moore's death was confirmed by his wife and manager, Joyce Moore (via Rolling Stone), who revealed the legendary musician passed away on Friday, January 10 at his home in Coral Gables, Florida. Sam Moore Was So Good It Made Otis Redding Nervous
Image
Seated behind his organ at Stax Records’ recording studio in Memphis in the Sixties, Booker T. Jones was a first-hand witness to musical history. As part of Booker T. and the Mg’s, Stax’s house band, Jones played on soul landmarks by Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Carla Thomas and especially Sam & Dave. Two days ago, Jones heard, like most of the world, that Sam Moore had died at the age of 89, depriving American music of another legend. (His on-and-off musical partner Dave Prater died in 1988.)

Once Jones left Stax...

Sam Moore, Legendary Soul Singer and Member of Sam & Dave, Dead at 89
Image
Sam Moore, one-half of the legendary soul group Sam & Dave, known for their iconic hits including “Soul Man” and “Hold On I’m Coming,” has died at the age of 89.

According to Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411, Moore passed away on Friday, January 10th due to complications from a recent surgery.

A native of Miami, Moore began singing in his local church and briefly considered pursuing a career in gospel music. However, he had a change of heart after seeing Jackie Wilson perform in concert and shifted his focus to pop and soul. He met future collaborator, Dave Prater, at a talent show, and together they began recording music as Sam & Dave. By 1965, the duo signed a record contract with Atlantic Records and were subsequently “loaned out” to Stax Records, through which they released their biggest hits. In 1968, Sam & Dave appeared at Martin Luther King, Jr.’s memorial concert at Madison Square Garden.

Learn How to Be More Like Kendrick Lamar in His “squabble up” Video: Watch
Image
Kendrick Lamar has dropped a new music video for “squabble up” from his surprise album, Gnx, released this past Friday. Watch it below.

Directed by Calmatic, the visual treatment was filmed entirely in a room painted a muted green — a nod to The Roots’ “The Next Movement” video. A whole lot is going on in the background, but Kendrick notably sits down with a book called How to Be More Like Kendrick for Dummies and it looks like all the references in the clip serve this exact purpose.

In addition to Menace II Society and Soul Train tributes, the video pays homage to forebears like Ice T and E-40 by echoing their Power and In a Major Way album covers, respectively. There are other references to the likes of Isaac Hayes, Nate Dogg, and Mac Dre as well.

Besides that, there are more overtures to the unity demonstrated at Kendrick’s “Pop Out” concert,...

‘Yellowstone’: This Season’s Most Shocking Drama? Watching Creator Taylor Sheridan Tear Down Kevin Costner’s Legacy
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from the Season 5, Episode 11 episode of “Yellowstone,” “Three Fifty-Three,” which premiered Sunday, Nov. 24 on Paramount Network.

Once it became clear that Kevin Costner wouldn’t return for the second half of Season 5 of “Yellowstone,” fans wondered how series creator Taylor Sheridan would write off his character, John Dutton. The split seemed less than amicable, including Costner saying he was unable to get on the same page with the rest of production about shooting schedules and even mentioning that legal action could come as a result of his departure.

But it’s hard to imagine fans imagining John Dutton’s farewell would go down like it did. Instead of a fitting send-off for the patriarch of the central family, it seems like Sheridan is trying to throw mud on the main character’s in-show legacy, while also needling Costner in real life.

Sheridan has been...

Why South Park's 1999 Feature Film Never Received a Sequel
Image
Quick Links The South Park Movie Pushed Boundaries South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut Was Successful Enough to Warrant a Sequel The South Park Feature-Length Specials

25 years ago, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut was unleashed to the masses during the early phases and height of the TV series' popularity. The movie took the TV series' bawdy satirical humor and amplified it to 100 as it tackled censorship, the MPAA, scapegoating, and many other themes that would become South Park's bread and butter. The movie dealt with its share of issues during production, mostly with creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone's fights with the MPAA over its content, but when it was all said and done, the South Park movie became a critical and financial success, even going on to earn an Academy Award nomination.

That was in 1999, and as it stands in 2024, fans of the series haven't gotten...

‘Save the Children,’ Long-Lost ’70s Concert Film With the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Staple Singers and Other Black Superstars, Gets a Netflix Rebirth
Image
“Save the Children,” an early ’70s concert film featuring many of that era’s biggest names in Black music, was in need of some saving itself. Although the documentary featured iconic stars like the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Bill Withers, the movie disappeared completely off the radar after being briefly released to theaters in 1973 by Paramount Pictures, never getting an authorized home-video release, let alone revival screenings. But salvation has come, with Netflix having picked up the doc to make it available to be seen for the first time in a half-century.

The two-hour film documents a concert that was put on in Chicago in 1972 to support Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Operation Push, with an all-star cast of performers that also included the Staple Singers, Roberta Flack, Isaac Hayes, Gladys Knight, the Tempations, Ramsey Lewis, Wilson Pickett, Sammy Davis Jr., Cannonball Adderley and Jerry Butler. All the Songs in the Tom Hanks Movie ‘Here’
Image
“Here” is here.

And Robert Zemeckis’ latest technologically innovative drama stars his “Forrest Gump” team of Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, this time embodying a couple living in a house. The angle of the shot never changes – it’s inside the living of a stately home, as time unfolds (and sometimes bends) around Hanks and Wright’s characters. It’s sort of like Disney’s Carousel of Progress attraction – we watch as their relationships change, time changes, devices change – all from a fixed vantage point.

And as you can imagine, there’s a ton of music. There are hardly better indicators of where we are than what music is playing in the radio or out of somebody’s personal music player.

There’s also one great Zemeckis Easter egg for the fans – at one point, somebody leaves the television on. What’s playing? The Beatles’ monumental performance on Ed Sullivan’s show.

Rufus Wainwright Slams Trump Use Of ‘Hallelujah’ As “Blasphemy”; Leonard Cohen Estate Sends Campaign A Cease & Desist Letter
Image
Rufus Wainwright was not flattered that former president Donald Trump used his cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” during last night’s strange town hall turned listening party in Pennsylvania. In fact, the singer called the candidate’s music choice “the height of blasphemy.”

“The song ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen has become an anthem dedicated to peace, love and acceptance of the truth,” Wainwright said in a statement posted on Instagram. “I’ve been supremely honored over the years to be connected with this ode to tolerance. Witnessing Trump and his supporters commune with this music last night was the height of blasphemy. Of course, I in no way condone this and was mortified, but the good in me hopes that perhaps in inhabiting and really listening to the lyrics of Cohen’s masterpiece, Donald Trump just might experience a hint of remorse over what he’s caused. I’m not holding my breath.

High-Ranking Scientologist Reveals the Memo the Church Sent Out After ‘South Park’ Poked Fun at Tom Cruise
Image
Scientologists have a series of acronyms and codes to refer to the various threats to their plans for world domination, with the kind of “joking & degrading” featured on shows like South Park shortened to “J&d.” Gotta protect the head Fp somehow.

When Trey Parker and Matt Stone first started taking shots at the aggressively litigious and rapidly growing religious and political organization the Church of Scientology in the classic South Park Season 12 episode “Trapped in the Closet,” they unintentionally sparked one of the show’s most disappointing controversies that led to beloved series regular Isaac Hayes leaving the show for good, shortly before his death. As one of the many celebrities whom Scientologists successfully recruited into their ranks, Hayes supposedly took issue with South Park repeating the official Scientology creation myth verbatim and educating the world on what Scientologists actually believe.

Hayes’ son Isaac Hayes III has long argued that,...

South Park Quietly Retired a Controversial Character
Image
With South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker recently revealing the show's plans to skip the 2024 presidential election, the writing was on the wall for their Donald Trump stand-in version of Mr. Garrison. The beloved teacher-turned-presidential candidate first appeared back in 2016, and he has made appearances here and there since then. Nowadays, he splits time between his teacher persona and his Trump persona, but it doesn't seem like that's going to be the case any longer.

The creators confirmed to Variety that they decided to push the next season until after the election.

Matt Stone: Weve tried to do South Park through four or five presidential elections, and it is such a hard thing to its such a mind scramble, and it seems like it takes outsized importance.

Trey Parker: Obviously, its f---ing important, but it kind of takes over everything and we just have less fun. I dont...

They’re never going to be friends — ever.

The White Stripes rocker Jack White followed through with his recent promise to sue Donald Trump, filing a copyright infringement lawsuit Monday along with bandmate Meg White over Trump’s unauthorized use of the duo’s classic rock anthem “Seven Nation Army” in a campaign video.

According to the complaint obtained by Rolling Stone, Trump and his team engaged in “flagrant misappropriation” of the hit song when they used its “highly-distinctive and immediately recognizable introductory riff” as the soundtrack to a video...

“Tom Cruise won’t come out of the closet”: One South Park Episode Was Forced to Hide All Names in the Credits after Allegedly Making Enemies With Tom Cruise
Image
The animated action series South Park has long been infamous for giving some of the most bizarre episodes of all time, pulling off parody stuff that would seem a bit too risky to most others. In fact, through one episode, the animated series seems to have allegedly made enemies with none other than the king of action and one of the greatest stars of all time, Tom Cruise.

South Park. | Credits: Comedy Central.

This happened in an episode that featured the Church of Scientology, the religion that the renowned Mission: Impossible alum follows, and their alleged practices in the eyes of the people who wrote the script. However, this episode was so bursting with criticism and mocking reactions to the actor and his religion that the episode was reportedly forced to hide all names in the credits!

South Park Creators Share Update on Show's Return, Will Avoid Spoofing 2024 Election
Image
South Park has never shied away from poking fun at politics, having spoofed presidential elections several times in the past. However, fans shouldn't expect Matt Stone and Trey Parker to do the same in 2024.

Per Vanity Fair, Stone and Parker confirmed that they won't be satirizing the U.S. presidential election. Parker explained how it's difficult to spoof such an important election, admitting that he and Stone simply "have less fun" when they've taken on that task previously. With Donald Trump in particular, Parker also believes that South Park has already spent too much time spoofing the former U.S. president, who could potentially reclaim the Oval Office if he wins the election this year.

Donald Trump Ordered by Judge to Stop Using Isaac Hayes-Penned Song at Rallies
Image
At an emergency injunction hearing in Atlanta federal court on Tuesday, Donald Trump and his campaign were ordered to stop using a song written by songwriting legend Isaac Hayes which he has played at over 130 rallies.

U.S. District Court Thomas Thrash Jr. issued an injunction as part of the 9:30 a.m. hearing called by attorneys representing Isaac Hayes III, the executor of his father’s estate. Trump is no longer allowed to use the Grammy-winning soul music legend’s song “Hold On, I’m Comin’” at rallies and events.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better decision,” Hayes said at a press conference following the hearing. “I want this to serve as an opportunity for other artists to come forward that don’t want their music used by Donald Trump or other political entities and continue to fight for music artists’ rights and copyright.”

Hayes told The Hollywood Reporter...
