When done right, viral marketing campaigns can do immense favors for an upcoming theatrical release. Some campaigns take clever advantage of coinciding release dates (the "Barbenheimer" double-bill being a really successful example), while others concoct puzzles, websites, and scavenger hunts that tie in with the film's fictional universe to generate hype. Sometimes, these augmented reality marketing tactics take things too far, such as when the fake interviews and police reports to promote "The Blair Witch Project" ended up spooking audiences for real. But whereas a fictional horror story being presented as real-life crime can at least be fact-checked, a science-backed prophecy anticipating the end of the world is somehow trickier to refute. Jurassic World Rebirth Surpasses Jake Gyllenhaal’s The Day After Tomorrow

The movie, since its release on July 4, has collected a total amount of $553 million (per Box Office Mojo), the majority of which has come from international markets.

Former Vice President Al Gore's 2006 documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" helped a lot with opening people's eyes to the realities of climate change, to the point where even the Republican presidential candidate in 2008 campaigned on addressing the issue. It's rare for any documentary to have the reach this one did, especially one about a topic no one really loves to think about. Gore had his doubts about the project too, but a 2004 blockbuster helped assuage them.

Christopher Judge's Teal'c was one of the most important characters in "Stargate Sg-1." Both the actor and his character's inclusion in the series were significant since neither had appeared in Roland Emmerich's 1994 "Stargate" movie, which kicked off the sprawling sci-fi franchise we know today. While "Sg-1" brought back some characters from the movie, the show also introduced new characters, most notably with Amanda Tapper's Samantha Carter and Judge's Teal'c. It's at least in part a testament to the actor's abilities, then, that the show managed to sustain itself outside of the Emmerich film, with both Tapper and Judge proving to be fan-favorite characters that stayed with the series until "Sg-1" was cancelled by the Sci-Fi Channel after ten seasons.

But Judge was integral to "Sg-1" in other ways, too. Though he never directed an "Sg-1" episode, he did write three: season 6's "The Changeling," season 7's "Birthright," and season 8's "Sacrifices.

Stargate has always been unique in that it’s the rare case of a TV franchise that’s become more memorable than the movie that inspired it. Indeed, mention Stargate, and most people will automatically think of the TV show and its spinoffs rather than the 1994 film.

Sadly, the franchise has been pretty dormant since Stargate Universe ended its short run in 2014. There have been numerous talks of a reboot or sequel, but nothing concrete yet. However, longtime writer and executive producer Brad Wright addressed the state of the franchise during a recent stage appearance at FedCon 33 in Bonn, Germany:

In 1994, director Roland Emmerich unwittingly kicked off one of the most expansive and detailed sci-fi franchises of the last few decades with "Stargate." Though the movie was initially supposed to start a "Stargate" film trilogy, those plans were abandoned after the movie debuted, and instead we got multiple TV continuations and spin-offs -- most notably with "Stargate Sg-1," which picked up where Emmerich's movie had left off. Ever since, the "Stargate" franchise has continued to grow, comprising multiple TV series, direct-to-home-media movies, comic books, video games, and novels.

But back in 1994, such a sprawling saga must have seemed like a distant dream to Emmerich, who just wanted to tell a cool sci-fi story. "Stargate" was the result. The movie starred Kurt Russell as Army colonel Jack O'Neill, who, alongside archaeologist and Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader), leads a team of experts through the titular portal to an Egyptian-style alien world.

Despite the historical inaccuracies of Mel Gibson’s The Patriot, this American Revolutionary War epic is a hit on streaming a quarter of a century later. Coming from director Roland Emmerich, The Patriot tells the story of an American colonist (Gibson) who opposed the war and gets swept up in the conflict after his son is murdered by a British officer.

While The Patriot was the subject of some controversy upon release for fictionalizing aspects of the true historical account, this has not stopped it from surging the streaming charts in 2025. As a hit on Paramount+, it seems audiences have once again connected with this story of personal vengeance, sacrifice, and rebellion, even if the movie takes some historical liberties.

Dennis Quaid wasn’t kidding when he called The Day After Tomorrow “the mother of all disaster movies.” Two decades after it first melted box office records, Roland Emmerich’s climate-catastrophe epic is taking the U.S. by storm once again — this time on Hulu. Originally released in 2004, The Day After Tomorrow starred Quaid as climatologist Jack Hall and a young Jake Gyllenhaal as his son Sam. The story? An extreme take on climate change, where melting polar ice triggers a new Ice Age that sweeps the planet with superstorms, flash freezes, and tidal waves the size of Manhattan skyscrapers. Emmerich and screenwriter Jeffrey Nachmanoff didn’t hold back — and neither did audiences.

With a budget of $125 million, the film went on to earn an earth-shaking $555 million globally, including $186 million from U.S. theaters and a further $369 million overseas. The Memorial Day weekend opening alone hauled in $68.7 million, nearly 37% of its final domestic tally.

Starring the Fresh Prince himself as Captain Steven Hiller, Independence Day was one of the most iconic disaster films of the '90s, grossing a massive $817.4 million worldwide off a $75 million budget. Fans of kaiju movies are always on the lookout for new giant monster movies to make their day, and fortunately, this is a great time to follow this genre. When it came time to turn Roland Emmerich's 1994 blockbuster "Stargate" into a TV series, "Stargate Sg-1" creators Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner were faced with recasting every character. Kurt Russell certainly wasn't going to come back as Jack O'Neill, the leader of the intrepid Stargate team, and neither was James Spader as Egyptologist and linguist Daniel Jackson. That meant Wright and Glassner had to start from square one when it came to the cast of their new show — though five actors from the movie actually did come back for one of the three main "Stargate" shows that sprang up in the wake of Emmerich's film. None of them, however, were main cast members.

After securing "Macgyver" star Richard Dean Anderson for the role of O'Neill, Wright and Glassner were evidently impressed with how well Canadian actor Michael Shanks could imitate James Spader, leading them to cast him in the role of Jackson.

It seems as though movie fans in the U.S. are gearing up for the July 4 holiday by watching a classic sci-fi movie that spawned a sequel two decades later. As of July 29, Will Smith’s alien epic Independence Dayis climbing the streaming charts nearly three decades after its theatrical release. According to FlixPatrol, Independence Day has now reached the No. 12 spot among all movies streaming on Hulu as of July 29.

After Roland Emmerich's "Stargate" proved a solid hit back in 1994, a TV series was created to continue the intergalactic adventures. Rather than leave fans hanging with a single movie, "Stargate Sg-1" picked up with the story of the titular crew as they traveled the universe via the Stargate portal, encountering new alien lifeforms and worlds along the way.

Unfortunately, when the series wrapped up, there was nothing to continue the story in the way that "Sg-1" had picked up where the film left off. "Stargate Sg-1" was canceled by the Sci-Fi channel (now SyFy) after 10 seasons back in 2007, and while there was the spin-off show "Stargate Atlantis," and two further spin-offs that arrived in the years that followed, the "Sg-1" story was very much finished.

Ever since, we've heard much about what could have been, including a canceled "Stargate" movie that would have brought the events of all the shows together.

A remake of the 1966 science fiction adventure film Fantastic Voyage has been making its way through development hell for decades now, and for most of that time it has had James Cameron attached as a producer. At one time, Cameron was working with Roland Emmerich to develop the project, and at another time he had chosen Shawn Levy to direct the film. Along the way, David S. Goyer was hired to write the screenplay – and for one stretch of time, Goyer and Cameron were working with director Guillermo del Toro to get the new Fantastic Voyage into production.
