Ryan Reynolds set the world on fire last year with his performance as Wade Wilson in Deadpool & Wolverine, but before he ever suited up as the Merc With a Mouth, he starred in a sci-fi thriller that just got an important streaming update. Reynolds stars alongside Ben Kingsley in Self/less, the 2015 sci-fi film following a man who transfers his consciousness into a younger body, only to realize that the procedure didn’t quite go according to plan. Self/less is not currently streaming anywhere, but Peacock has swooped in to save the day, confirming that the film will begin streaming on the platform tomorrow, July 1. Self/less was maligned by critics and audiences, earning an 18% from the former and a 46% from the latter on Rotten Tomatoes. It also grossed only $31 million at the box office against a $26 million budget.

Àlex and David Pastor wrote the script for Self/less, and Tarsem Singh directed the film.

Chris Pine will always be known for his roles in the Star Trek and Wonder Woman franchises, but 16 years ago, he starred in a sci-fi horror thriller that’s infecting a new streamer’s top 10. Pine stars alongside Emily VanCamp (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Svu) in Carriers, the 2009 film following four friends who seek haven after a lethal virus spreads globally, leaving dangerous infected and humans all over the world. Carriers is currently streaming on Paramount+, and it’s one of the most popular movies on the platform in America, sitting at #9 at the time of writing. The film earned a 62% score from critics and a 39% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes after grossing only $5 million at the box office.

However, the film bombed at the box office and was plagued with negative reviews. 10 years later, Self/less has a new opportunity to find a new life on streaming, as it's officially heading to Peacock on July 1.

Self/less followed Damian Hale (Ben Kingsley), a business tycoon and billionaire, who is diagnosed with a terminal illness. However, he wasn't ready to give up life, so he managed to transfer his consciousness into a younger body, Ryan Reynolds' Mark Bitwell. After the procedure, Damian takes on a new name, Edward, and starts a new life in New Orleans. However, he gets plagued with disturbing images.

Self/less was originally set for release on Sept.

Released in 2018, John Krasinski's A Quiet Place went on to become a box office sensation that took in more than $340 million dollars. Paradigm has hired Kyle Jensen as a Literary Content Agent and Jamie Kaye-Phillips as a Theatre Literary Content Agent, upping Matthew Nutty from Coordinator to Agent in the Talent department.

Additionally, Napoli Management Group, a division of Paradigm Media Entertainment, has tapped Brian Neal as an agent. A 23-year veteran of the television news industry, he’ll in his new role rep all levels of on-air talent in the national broadcast news space.

Jensen and Nutty will be based out of the agency’s Los Angeles office, with Kaye-Phillips working out of New York. Where Neal will be based is not yet clear.

The hirings follow December’s announcement that Todd Eisner, a 30-year veteran talent agent, had joined Paradigm from the now-folded A3. Over the past year, Paradigm has been staffing up with the hires of Chris Till and Neil A. Cohen, as well as internal promotions, having elevated 14 agents to Partner.

Netflix struck gold with Bird Box in 2018, when it became one of the most streamed films, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. This massive success was primarily led by Sandra Bullock's star power and the extensive marketing campaigns Netflix did for the film in the form of blindfold challenges. This Susanne Bier-directed movie also had an interesting story, as it was based on the hit novel of the same name by Josh Malerman. A common criticism of Bird Box was that it had a thin screenplay.

Nevertheless, the criticism did not stop Netflix from expanding the Bird Box franchise, with Bird Box Barcelona being the first of the many planned local-language Bird Box spinoffs. It is a Spanish spin-off sequel to the original film, directed by Alex and David Pastor. The film stars Mario Casas as Sebastián, Alejandra Howard as Anna, and Georgina Campbell as Claire, among others.

David Pastor reveals whether a Sandra Bullock cameo was considered for Bird Box Barcelona. The spinoff, co-written and co-directed by Pastor, was released on July 14 and broadened the scope of Netflix's 2018 hit, Bird Box, by tracking survivors in other parts of the world. It follows Sebastián (Mario Casas) and his daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard), who seek refuge from the same hostile entity that, when viewed, prompts individuals to take their own lives.

Bullock, whose character was still alive at the end of the first movie, was not included in Bird Box Barcelona's cast, and during a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Pastor explained why. The co-director revealed there were no plans to feature Bullock, noting that he and Álex Pastor had the opportunity to create a new story. Much to some viewers delight (and others’ annoyance), Netflix’s buzzy horror saga, which has grown out of a 2018 zeitgeist-y hit into a bonafide franchise via this weekend’s Bird Box: Barcelona, continues to take its cues from The Blair Witch Project. That is to say, they never show us the damn monster! Or in Bird Box’s case, monsters or creatures, plural.

This is of course thematically sound. The characters of both Bird Box (directed by Susanne Bier) and Bird Box: Barcelona (from writer-directors David Pastor and Alex Pastor) cannot gaze upon the creatures terrorizing them without being driven to suicide. So why would the movie show us? Netflix can’t have 45 million dead viewers on its hands after all!

But just because we never see the creatures, doesn’t mean we don’t learn anything about them.

Bird Box Barcelona is the long-awaited revisitation of the world established in 2018’s Bird Box. Not necessarily a direct Bird Box sequel, Bird Box Barcelona leaves behind the locations and characters of the first film to explore what was, before the arrival of the franchise’s society-destroying creatures, one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations. So, it wasn't long before Netflix decided to make more movies set in the Bird Box universe. With no time at all, directors Alex and David Pastor stepped up to offer a unique introspective look into the Bird Box post-apocalyptic world and creatures with Bird Box: Barcelona. The Spanish directors and screenwriters recently sat down with MovieWeb to discuss their latest project, and their take on the Bird Box apocalypse.

How the Pair of Directors Came to Direct the Next Bird Box Movie

Revisit the world of Bird Box with Bird Box Barcelona, the follow-up to Netflix’s 2018 hit. As its title suggests, Bird Box Barcelona is set in Barcelona, Spain, and nearly all the film’s dialogue is in Spanish; it’s a less obvious move than doing a direct continuation of the story of the first Bird Box, but it pays off. While not necessarily a direct Bird Box sequel, Bird Box Barcelona takes the world of the first film and explores and expands it in truly exciting new ways.

Although set in Barcelona, Bird Box Barcelona features a cast representing a number of different countries. Two examples of this are Diego Calva’s Octavio who, like the actor, is from Mexico, and Georgina Campbell’s UK-raised Claire. Five years ago seems aeons in an era so disrupted by Covid. Five years after the original "Bird Box" became an absolute sensation on Netflix, we're finally getting a follow-up. While it's not a proper sequel, it is more of a spin-off taking place elsewhere in the world. In this case, Spain, which is why the forthcoming movie is aptly titled "Bird Box Barcelona." That also has a nice alliterative ring to it. But that's about the only thing about this movie that looks nice, as it seems absolutely chaotic and tense.

This appears to be going with a very similar conceit as the original film, with survivors trying to avoid eye contact with the mysterious beings at the center of this disaster at all costs. The Spanish-language spinoff movie has a blindfolded father, Sebastian, played by Mario Casas, protecting his daughter and joined by Barbarian breakout star Georgina Campbell as they look to escape from demonic entities in the desolate streets of Barcelona in a dark, sightless world.

“Wear blindfolds. Any means necessary to cover your eyes, and avoid visual contact with these beings,” terror-filled people are warned at one point during the teaser trailer for the film written and directed by Álex Pastor and David Pastor.

That’s because anyone who looks at the evil force will be compelled to violently kill themselves.

"Those things, they take our fears, and they twist them," explains Georgina Campbell's undisclosed character in the opening moments of the Netflix teaser. The upcoming Spanish-language spinoff takes the terror and action from the original film and places it thousands of miles away in Spain. Similar to the 2018 film, which starred Sandra Bullock, Barcelona follows a family as they try and survive while avoiding visual contact with the mysterious creatures that are causing mass suicides across the globe. However, according to an unseen individual in the trailer, the monsters are evolving, suggesting that the protagonists in the upcoming spinoff may be in for a tough road ahead.

Entertainment Weekly has debuted a brand new teaser trailer this morning, while also confirming that Bird Box Barcelona is not a prequel. Rather, the events of the film are unfolding at the very same time as the original Bird Box movie… in a very different part of the world.

Producer Dylan Clark tells EW, “The events that we see Malorie/Sandra Bullock endure in the original Bird Box are happening at the same time that Sebastian/Mario Casas is going through his journey. Being in Barcelona gave us a chance to see how surviving this intense threat in an iconic city poses different challenges.”

You read that right, we're getting another "Bird Box" film, but seemingly one that is simply adjacent to, and not a continuation of, the events of the original. Interesting.

Remember a few years back, when the world was briefly obsessed with Bird Box? Netflix and adapted from Josh Malerman’s novel, received solid reviews and was a huge hit on the streaming service. Bird Box, one of Netflix’s most-watched movies ever, has finally spawned a follow-up — some four-and-a-half years after the Sandra Bullock-led original broke streaming records.

Released back in December 2018, the original Bird Box followed a mother (played by Bullock) as she and her children embark on a two-day journey whilst blindfolded, to avoid eye contact with a mysterious force that is decimating the world’s population. This first spinoff movie will be a Spanish-language thriller set in Barcelona. The Occupant and The Head filmmakers Alex and David Pastor wrote and directed the film.

Mario Casas, Georgina Campbell, Diego Calva, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Patrick Criado, Celia Freijeiro with Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner and Leonardo Sbaraglia star in Bird Box Barcelona.

“After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population by causing all who see it to take their lives, Sebastian and his young daughter Anna must navigate their own journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona. But as they form an uneasy alliance with other survivors and make their way toward a safe haven, a threat more sinister than the unseen creatures grows.

Netflix has said it will clock more than 30 Spanish-language projects across film, series, and non-fiction documentaries by the year’s end. The news was unveiled by Verónica Fernández, Director of Series for Spain and Portugal at an event to mark the expansion of the streamer’s production hub in Tres Cantos, Madrid.

Netflix has been available in Spain since 2015. The streamer’s Tres Cantos campus opened in 2019 and has since doubled its stage capacity and now features ten sets and a multi-purpose space that includes the company’s first in-house post-production facility.

Fernández said the new facilities “guarantee” that creatives in Spain will have the “means to continue to tell their stories.”

“No one thought we would have so much ongoing production and Spanish content,” she said at a Q&a session during the opening event. “We are 500 million Spanish speakers, but this content has gone beyond.”
