Exclusive: In the first of three roundtables featuring this year’s Emmy nominees for Outstanding Casting, Deadline gathered Jeanie Bacharach (The Bear), Linda Lowy (Hacks), Destiny Lilly (Only Murders in the Building), Brett Benner (Shrinking) and Melissa Kostenbauder (The Studio) to talk about self tapes, landing the joke, and the challenges that come with preparing the next generation of casting directors.

The nominees, who each had to submit a 30-minute composition reel from the season to showcase their work, also explained how they judge their peers and what they were most proud of accomplishing on their respective shows.

" I'm always thrilled about it and I’m always trying to do the best work," two-time Emmy-winning production designer Patrick Howe says about scoring his third consecutive nomination for Only Murders in the Building. Howe explains in Gold Derby's Meet the Experts: TV Production Designers panel that the challenge "on an ongoing series, with new material, is trying to keep things fresh and have it feel like the first time for audience; that they can see new content and look at characters in a new way and always approaching it like it's like it's a first season." Only Murders in the Building is coming back for season five with a new mystery to solve, and Hulu announced that the upcoming season will premiere Sept. 9. The first three episodes will air on the premiere date, while new episodes will continue to be added to the streaming service on the following Tuesdays.

Season five, which was renewed in September 2024, will see original stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez and Michael Cyril Creighton reprise their roles, while Meryl Streep, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Richard Kind and Nathan Lane will also return in guest starring roles.

No, we don't know whodunnit just yet, but we do finally have the answer to when we will be able to start solving the newest murder at the Arconia with Mabel, Charles, and Oliver. The dynamic trio will be back with the latest episodes on Hulu this fall, but the release date is a little later than normal.

After Only Murders in the Building season 5 wrapped filming in mid-June, we were keeping our fingers crossed that the new season would hit our watch lists by the show's typical release timeframe in August. However, the cast announced the release date in a video shared on social media on July 23, and there's still a bit more waiting to do in the month ahead.

Hulu said Wednesday that Season 5 of its Emmy-winning comedy Only Murders in the Building will debut on the streamer September 9 with three episodes, with the remainder of the season rolling out with new episodes weekly.

The news comes after the show picked up seven Emmy nominations for Season 4 including its fourth consecutive Outstanding Comedy Series nomination.
