When we last left the Return of the Living Dead franchise, Part 2 had just flopped badly, satisfying neither critics nor fans of the first one. Making only $9 million worldwide after a $6 million budget, what was once thought to be a burgeoning series of movies in the mold of Friday the 13th looked deader than a week-old corpse. But as we all know, you can’t keep a good zombie down, and after the man who held the rights to the Living Dead name, Tom Fox, decided he didn’t want to be in the ghoul business any longer, he sold the rights, which eventually ended up at Trimark Pictures, a small studio specializing in horror pictures like Warlock, Leprechaun and Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive. Trimark saw there was potential still pumping in the Living Dead’s veins and decided to make a third entry, although this one would be...

A new meta-project tied to the popular horror franchise Return of the Living Dead will bring two of the original film's stars back from the beyond. The film, titled Trash's Revenge, will see the, well, return of Return of the Living Dead actors Linnea Quigley, Beverly Randolph, Thom Mathews, Miguel Nunez, John Philbin, and, "through the magic of CGI," deceased actors James Karen and Don Calfa, Bloody Disgusting reports. Karen and Calfa, both veteran character actors with long careers in movies and TV, famously played Frank and Ernie, respectively, in the first film in the comedy horror series. Karen passed away in 2018, and Calfa in 2016. It isn't clear how extensive their appearances in Trash's Revenge will be, but no doubt the use of CGI to bring them back to screens will be deeply controversial.

August of 1985 saw the release of one of the great zombie movies of all time. And we’re not talking about George Romero’s Day of the Dead, though some will argue that particular sequel deserves to be in the conversation. We’re talking about Dan O’Bannon’s punk-rock horror-comedy The Return of the Living Dead, which introduced the world to speedy, brain-craving zombies – who also have a thing or two to say when they’re feeling chatty. The movie was by no means a blockbuster, but it did very respectable business, making around $30 million worldwide off of a budget in the low single digits. Naturally, a follow-up would be necessary in the eyes of that film’s producer Tom Fox, who assumed the Living Dead title was due for the franchise treatment in the vein of Friday the 13th. It would take three years, but we did eventually get...

Robot zombies? It could happen, and often did in "Transformers: Prime."
Since "Transformers" has been remade so many times over the past 40 years, new cartoons will sometimes use a central gimmick to set themselves apart from the crowd. "Beast Wars" had robots that transformed into animals instead of vehicles. The 2003 anime series "Transformers: Armada" cashed in on the "Pokémon" craze and had the Autobots and Decepticons fighting over "Mini-Cons," human-sized Transformers that could unlock great powers in the larger ones. The currently airing "Transformers: Earthspark" has introduced a new batch of characters called the "Terrans," who are Transformers created on Earth instead of the metal planet Cybertron.
For the 2010-2013 cartoon "Transformers: Prime," the gimmick was Dark Energon. "Energon" is the Transformers' primary fuel source, and the literal lifeblood of their creator, Primus. Dark Energon (which glows a sickly purple instead of crystal blue) is the blood of Primus' shadow self,...

Brains! That's what it takes to make a good zombie movie these days. While the horror genre had a renaissance in the early 2000s, the leg-dragging flesh feasters have waned in popularity recently. Writer/Director Steve Wolsh of Living Dead Media is hoping to turn that around with a holiday twist on the Return of The Living Dead franchise. While details on the production are scant, Wolsh is getting some interesting pieces in order.
Wolsh spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and said that the film won't be a reboot but a sequel to the 1985 original, directed by Dan O’Bannon, and called the installment "a brand new adventure." He also confirmed that this film will use practical effects and real locations instead of greenscreen, which some may argue has robbed the potency and visceral power of the zombie genre in this century. It is not often that the best B-horror movies are complimented for their performances, despite the fact that they are often made or broken by them. An actor unable to commit fully to the project they are a part of can leave an otherwise enjoyable movie unremarkable. It does not even necessarily have to be a typically good performance, just one able to sell the viewer on the atmosphere and tone of a movie.
Horror movies in general struggle to garner enough attention for the hard work their performances require. Year after year, horror actors find themselves passed up for higher acknowledgments because of the genre they excel in. Achieving the right tone and energy in their performances can make a cheap horror into a fantastic cheap horror. We talk a lot about the top of the pile when discussing horror novels and novelists. Obviously, the top of that pile is a certain man by the name of Stephen King. However, if you were going to have a Mount Rushmore of authors with him, I’m throwing the great Michael Crichton up there with him in one of the other 3 spots. Yeah, I know he’s not known as a hardcore horror guy, or even really a horror guy at all, I know for a fact his most well-known work Jurassic Park scared the bejesus out of a whole generation of kids. For that matter, I showed that movie to my kids as their first entryway into horror. White died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles of melanoma, his All My Children castmate Kathleen Noone (Ellen Shepherd Dalton on the show) told The Hollywood Reporter.
White also played Arthur Cates, the attorney for Sable Colby (Stephanie Beacham), on the first two seasons of the ABC primetime soap The Colbys in 1985-86, and he recurred as the deceased doctor dad of the characters played by Swoosie Kurtz, Sela Ward, Patricia Kalember and Julianne Phillips on the 1991-96 NBC drama Sisters.
White first portrayed Lincoln Tyler, son of stern Pine Valley matriarch Phoebe Tyler (Ruth Warrick), from 1974-80 — he was the third actor in the role, starting with James Karen — then returned...

Last year, Amazon closed an $8.5 billion acquisition of the film studio MGM, giving them ownership of the studio’s thousands of films and TV shows. Earlier this year, we heard that Poltergeist was one of the six MGM properties Amazon was most interested in doing something with… and now Variety has discovered that a Poltergeist TV series is in early development at Amazon MGM Studios! There are no plot details to share at this time, but Variety has been told “the show will be set within the world of the film”.
Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey are set to executive produce the series for Amblin Television.
Tobe Hooper, who had previously made The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Eaten Alive, Salem’s Lot, and The Funhouse, directed Poltergeist from a screenplay Steven Spielberg wrote with Michael Grais and Mark Victor. Spielberg also crafted the initial story. The film has the following synopsis: Strange...

Almost forty years ago, writer/director Dan O’Bannon delivered one of the most highly entertaining zombie movies of all time with The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here)… and in the process, spawned a franchise. There was the goofy comedy of The Return of the Living Dead Part II, the “Romeo and Juliet with zombies” love story Return of the Living Dead ///, and a couple sequels nobody paid much attention to, Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave. The franchise has been dormant for eighteen years – but it may be revived very soon. It has come to our attention that Muck and Kill Her Goats director Steve Wolsh, who also happens to be the CEO of the company Living Dead Media, is developing a reboot of The Return of the Living Dead.

The 1985 zombie horror comedy The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here) has some awesome poster art, featuring green-skinned zombies that are “back from the dead and ready to party”. Now the folks at Super7, a company that’s described as being “the premier pop-culture design house and producer of lifestyle-oriented collectibles, toys and apparel”, have taken to social media to reveal that they have turned a couple of those poster zombies into ReAction Figures! These figures will be available for purchase sometime this summer, but for now you can take a look at a picture of them at the bottom of this article.
Written and directed by Dan O’Bannon, The Return of the Living Dead has the following synopsis: When foreman Frank shows new employee Freddy a secret military experiment in a supply warehouse, the two klutzes accidentally release a gas that reanimates corpses into flesh-eating zombies. As the epidemic spreads throughout Louisville,...

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.
Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.
Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. With the banner “Roger Corman Presents,” Corman and company...

The 1985 zombie horror comedy The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here) is one of my all-time favorite movies, and every now and then I like to look up the filming locations of my favorites to see what they look like these days. By watching a Sean Clark video on the locations used to bring The Return of the Living Dead to the screen, I learned that the building that stood in for the Uneeda medical supply warehouse in the movie has been converted into a private residence. So I looked up this address – 698 Moulton Avenue in Los Angeles, California – and learned that the Uneeda-building-turned-private-residence is now on the market! The property is listed on Zillow, with plenty of pictures showing off what the place looks like now that it’s a home with three bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a private pool. And if any die hard fan of...

Most people question the intention behind doing a remake; is it for money (always), or so an IP won’t revert back to original ownership (sometimes), or is it to improve on an interesting concept but poor delivery (it’s happened before)? These are the normal scenarios. But then you have a legend like Tobe Hooper, who decides as the middle flick in a three-picture deal with Cannon Films, to do a sincere remake of Invaders from Mars (1986), the 1953 minor cult classic. Why? Because you can tell he genuinely loves the original, and he leaves enough Dr. Pepper fingerprints so you know you’re in Hooper Town.
Released in early June, Invaders lost money and wasn’t a critical success. Surprise! Unfortunately, most Hoopers’ aren’t built for the era they occupy; it’s not often his work was appreciated in his time.

This one delivers the 4K ‘experience’ — and David Lynch’s mesmerizing visuals and Angelo Badalamenti’s seductive music once again pull us into a different dimension. Four or five viewings down the line, the ‘storyline’ of this TV show-become-feature film is if anything less understandable. But it’s no less pleasantly weird — we can’t keep our eyes off of Naomi Watts and Laura Harring. My ‘quality’ section debates a question I’m getting more often: are 4K discs worth the upgrade?

It’s a Larry Blamire film, and it’s composed of entirely New and Unique elements: a lonely mansion, strange servants, the reading of the will, weird heirs, death threats, snoopy reporters, a midnight seance, mysterious locked rooms, the clutching hands of a phantom menace, and the ultimate terror, Kogar the mighty ape. All new, right? This ‘nothing you’ve ever seen before’ is performed by Blamire’s nimble acting clan, all competing to immortalize some of the silliest dialogue ever written. Two versions of the screwball-nostalgic farce are present on this special edition disc, along with the usual disturbingly offbeat selection of Blamire extras.

Cult nonsense filmmaking finds its Ultimate in Larry Blamire’s pair of monster-rally comedies, that parody classic cheapo sci-fi thrillers. The spot-on spoofery nails the genre’s hyper-earnest characterizations and affectionately stilted acting. The only disconnect are the high production values lavished on these personal films: remastered for reissue, they look and sound almost too good for authenticity’s sake. Separate purchases, each with bounteous extras, including Larry Blamire’s weird ‘reanimated movie classics.’

Return Of The Living Dead (1984) was a spin-off of the Living Dead series that resulted from the sharing of copyright between George Romero and Night Fo The Living Dead co-writer John Russo. While Romero went to continue the narrative with Dawn Of The Dead and Day Of The Dead, both bleak social satire/horrors, Russo undertook a humorous and far more chaotic reprise of the original story. For Sunday’s Oscars 2019 ceremony, producers had a difficult decision of which film industry people would make the cut and who would be left out of the “In Memoriam.” For the segment, Gustavo Dudamel and the L.A. Philharmonic performed music by Oscar winner John Williams.
