Andres and Elias get together one evening for their last summer joint. On his way home, Elias finds a hidden case containing 5 different types of drugs. The next morning, Elias calls Andres to catch up on his discovery. He tells him he wants to gather round with some friends to perform an experiment: each should take a different drug and see what happens. The experiment takes a sudden turn when Andres girlfriend calls him to say her grandma has died.

In 1884, the famous painter Juan Manuel Blanes, from Uruguay, is asked to create a portrait of José Artigas. There is only one drawing of his face, done in his old age so Blanes must imagine what he looked like by reading up on his ideas and learning about his life. Amongst the different materials he is given in order to "discover" Artigas' features, Blanes finds the notes of an old Spanish spy, Aníbal Larra, hired by the Argentine triumvir Manuel de Sarratea, to kill Artigas, the rebel chief who will not succumb to the dominance of Buenos Aires. At the time, Artigas was hiding out in Ayuí, to the north of what is known today as Uruguay.

From then on Pedro, one of his old colleagues, begins an intricate search in order to discover the departed's idea, taking over his place and making use of his original notes and thoughts. En otro plano, tenemos a Nina y Federico, los protagonistas de la obra que Elías esta escribiendo. Ellos, solo buscan amarse, se ven forzados a salir del papel y presionar a Elías para que el les de el final que su historia merece, Este es el punto de partida de "Des-autorizados", una película que transcurre en una ciudad imaginaria, colorida y delirante. En la línea de "Amelie" y "Stranger Than Fiction", nos trae una reflexión sobre el arte, la creación, el amor y el desamor.
