The Divisive Doctor Who Episode That Captures Everything Great About the Russell T Davies Era

“You dabbled with aliens,” declares creature that had been posing as an alien hunter named Victor Kennedy. “Now meet the genuine article.”

It’s hard to put into words just how upsetting that genuine article is. Unsightly grey flesh drips from his shoulders and head, so that he resembles more a sentient glob of moldy yogurt than an actual person. Comedian Peter Kay makes his character even more upsetting by bearing his teeth and sticking out his tongue. And that’s before revealing that the faces of his victims protrude from his body still screaming for help, including a character noted for her sweetness stuck to his bottom.

Somehow, the worst part of the monster, dubbed the Abzorbaloff, is his behind-the-scenes origin. The Abzorbaloff design came from a child who won a contest through the long-running kid’s show Blue Peter.

10 Doctor Who Characters Who Deserved Better Fates
Image
In the British sci-fi series Doctor Who, the Doctor meets many people on their adventures throughout time and space. Unfortunately, not all of them survive the enemies they encounter whenever they step out of the Tardis. After all, Daleks and Cybermen and the Master don't care who ends up collateral damage. Still, many fan-favorite characters have died senseless deaths at their hands, or at the hands of things even worse.

Doctor Who has a habit of giving viewers very sympathetic and likeable characters and then killing them off just as audiences have fully embraced them. This raises the stakes for Doctor Who fans, but it sometimes results in characters (particularly female characters) being killed in order to further the Doctor's storyline and make them sad. Many of these characters got meaningful deaths, but there's no denying that too often their deaths were more about the Doctor, or his companions or enemies,...

The show ran for three series between 2003 and 2005 and has become a cult classic.

Now, BBC Three have commissioned its first original animation in over 20 years.

Galaxy Dance is set amid Eurovision 2989, with the interstellar dance competition seeing a myriad of alien groups and Earth’s human band competing for a prize fund so gigantic it could save the planet from extinction. The only issue...

Aardman are looking to bring back Wallace and Gromit, but not in feature films
Author: Jon Lyus

Fans of incorrect lower limb attire, facial decortication and enormous Lycan-Lapine crossbreeds will be pleased this morning. Aardman’s Co-founder Peter Lord (and Master) has told a German VFX conference that he ‘absolutely assumes’ that Nick Park will bring back Wallace and Gromit to your screens soon.

According to THR Lord told the Fmx VFX and animation audience in Stuttgart, Germany recently,

“When Nick’s not drawing cavemen, he’s drawing Wallace & Gromit…I absolutely assume he will do another, but not a feature. I think he found it was too much. I think he liked the half-hour format.”

The Curse of the Were-Rabbit was a stretch for our old pals W&C, though the relentless invention and visual accuity was as mesmerising as ever. That we’ll see more Wallace and Gromit on the small screen is a reassuring sign that Aardman, no matter how far they travel,...

Newzoids: Why ITV's new show is 'spikier, edgier' than Spitting Image
Jon Culshaw and Debra Stephenson have made their names with their impressions of the famous faces all around us - and now they're back to provide more familiar voices in ITV's new satirical, topical puppet show Newzoids.

And it just sort of reflects the whole coalition, social media generation. Nowadays, the puppets have got more of a spikiness, more of an edgy exaggeration to them. And of course, the comedy...

The movie is based on the Alan Partridge character made famous by Steve Coogan, and finds the radio and TV personality having a nervous breakdown in Dundee. Hit the jump to watch the trailer and to check out the domestic poster. The film also stars Felicity Montagu, Simon Greenall, Colm Meaney, and Tim Key. Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa behind-the-scenes featurette released - watch
Steve Coogan in Alan Partridge (2013)
A new Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa behind-the-scenes character featurette has been unveiled.

The three-minute video, which focuses on Alan's Pa Lynn Benfield (Felicity Montagu) and friend Michael (Simon Greenall), is part of the bonus content included on the film's DVD release.

It includes interviews with creator Steve Coogan and writer Armando Iannucci, who can be seen discussing the unspoken "affection" Alan and long-suffering assistant Lynn have for each other.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa is out now on DVD in the UK and will receive a Us theatrical release in early 2014.

Coogan recently admitted that he may "re-animate" Alan Partridge for an Alpha Papa sequel.

"There's definitely some possibility of Alan having another outing, and what it is I don't know," the comedian told Digital Spy.

"He's not dead, we've not killed him. We deliberately didn't kill him - he's like a vampire, we put him in a coffin, he's kept...

‘Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa’ Review
Stars: Steve Coogan, Colm Meaney, Anna Maxwell Martin, Sean Pertwee, Jessica Knappett, Darren Boyd, Monica Dolan, Nigel Lindsay | Written by Neil Gibbons, Rob Gibbons, Peter Baynham, Steve Coogan, Armando Iannucci | Directed by Declan Lowney

When it comes to British television if you were to mention Steve Coogan even the most cynical of fan would smile, he is just that type of man. He is a man who will give his all for comedy, and maybe even take a moment to be dramatic if the moment calls for it (think Philomena). The fact is though there will always be a few characters that we will all remember, and no this time it’s not Paul Calf it is in fact Alan Partridge who has his moment to shine in Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa.

The safest story for Alan to make a return would probably be him trying to get back onto the BBC yet again,...

Aileen Quinn in Annie (1982)
A sports broadcaster, chatshow host, radio DJ and best-selling author, Alan Partridge switched gears to feature films earlier this year with the release of his first movie Alpha Papa.

To mark the DVD and Blu-ray release of his big screen smash hit, Digital Spy asked Norfolk's finest to tell us his favourite movies. He gave us four, and assured us at the time of writing he was about to watch Pacific Rim...

Annie (1982)

"The 1982 musical Annie reads like a Who's Who of the cast of Annie, but for me it's all about one performance: flame-headed ingénue Aileen Quinn played the title role, and like Daddy Warbucks himself, I was quite quite taken by her. On the advice of family and friends and myself, I waited until she turned 18 in 1989 before I even attempted to become pen pals with her. I wrote to her three times, but left it there."

Alan Partridge lights up the Norwich skies for Christmas
Laserbeams, a Roachford CD and massive dancing Alans illuminate an East Anglian crowd for 'the biggest turning-on of lights since the end of the three-day week'

A giant image of Alan Partridge's face that shoots 25m dancing Alans into the sky is the highlight of this year's Norwich Christmas lights display.

Hundreds of people – a crowd that might have rather disappointed Steve Coogan's famously egocentric radio jock, sport presenter and chat show host – turned out to see the festive display switched on by BT Sport frontman Jake Humphrey last night. Christmas Alan also "performs" a version of the song Cuddly Toy by 90s pop-funk band Roachford, in a nod to his lip-synch scene at the beginning of Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, in which he drives to his hometown of Norwich.

Mark Benton and Robson Green in Christmas Lights (2004)
The face of Alan Partridge has been used for this year's Norwich Christmas lights display.

Steve Coogan's fictional radio DJ appears in an eight-metre-high light sculpture, which sings Roachford's 'Cuddly Toy' and features a laser projection.

Hundreds of people turned out to see Jake Humphrey switch on the Christmas lights in Norwich.

The lasers shot from Alan's eyes projected 80ft giant dancing Alans across the town centre and into the skies.

Partridge was unable to attend the event, but his friend Michael (Simon Greenall) read out a note from the star, saying: "Dear people of Norwich, and to a lesser extent anyone here from Suffolk - welcome!

"I'm genuinely heart-broken not to be there with you, but it's quiz night at the Rose & Crown and I'm the designated driver. You're about to witness the biggest turning on of lights since the end of the three-day week.

Alan Partridge: Simon Greenall's 5 favourite moments
One of the many joys of Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa was seeing old favourites from the TV show crop up again. Alongside Partridge's long-suffering assistant Lynn and DJ nemesis Dave Clifton, Simon Greenall returned to steal scenes as 'Geordie' Michael.

We last saw Michael launching himself off Cromer Pier to provide a distraction in Alpha Papa's tense stand-off, and although the end credits told us his body was never found, Greenall insisted that there's a good chance he could "emerge from the sea" to reunite with Partridge.

Discussing the lasting appeal of Partridge, Greenall said: "We all know our local TV presenter, that's what he is, we've grown up with him in our living rooms. He's also an eternal loser, which we love. He's never really going to come out on top.

"At the end of Alpha Papa he achieved some kind of happiness, there's a kind of contented moment at the end.

Review: Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa
Comfortably broadcasting at North Norfolk Digital alongside Sidekick Simon (Tim Key), former chatshow host, Bond enthusiast and Bouncing Back author Alan Partridge is one of the leading lights of North Norfolk Digital. But when media conglomerate Glendale Media (their emptiness exemplified by meaningless motto ‘The way you want it to be’), takes over the station and instigates a revamp, Alan’s job is in jeopardy. Driving gloves in tow, the hero of the ‘Wales of the East’ convinces the new board that dinosaur DJ Pat Farrell (an excellent Colm Meaney) is the best culprit for redundancy, with a succinct argument – ‘Just Sack Pat’, scrawled in red marker pen on a flip chart.

Later, Pat reacts violently and besieges the radio station, demanding that Alan’s appointed as chief hostage negotiator. It’s time for Norfolk’s favourite son to forget about his Nandos Efficiency System, Roachford sing-alongs and radio discussions...

Film Review: 'Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa'
★★★★☆ British comedian Steve Coogan's beloved Norwich-based media whore Alan Partridge has bounced back numerous times over his 21-year career, first appearing on Radio 4 before moving on to star in a plethora of TV and internet debacles. The self-proclaimed king of chat now makes his big screen debut in Declan Lowney's faithful and hilarious Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa (2013). A permanent fixture at North Norfolk Digital ("North Norfolk's best music mix"), Alan couldn't be happier. That is until corporate big boys Gordale Media buy up the station, with the specific aim of appealing to a younger, hipper audience.

Now firmly in the firing line, Alan decides to put forward his colleague, Pat (Colm Meaney), for redundancy. Unfortunately, Pat takes the news badly and decides to hold the staff of the station hostage. Yet, where many see disaster, Alan sees opportunity. Neatly expanding the character from its TV and radio roots,...

Alpha Papa Review, Trailer, Pictures & News
TV's former King of Chat Alan Partridge (Steve Coogan) is now comfortably installed as a daytime DJ in broadcasting backwater North Norfolk Digital. However, he's thrust back into the media spotlight when sacked colleague Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney) takes twelve hostages in a desperate protest at the station being taken over by a corporate conglomerate. British TV's finest comedy creation sublimely makes the transition to the big screen in a hilarious outing that sees the return of put-upon Pa Lynn (Felicity Montagu), clueless Geordie Michael (Simon Greenall) and long suffering sidekick Simon (Tim Key).

'Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa' review: Steve Coogan's DJ is under siege
Director: Declan Lowney; Screenwriters: Armando Iannucci, Steve Coogan, Rob Gibbons, Neil Gibbons; Starring: Steve Coogan, Colm Meaney, Felicity Montagu, Sean Pertwee, Simon Greenall; Running time: 90 mins; Certificate: 15

Alan Partridge has shown himself to be nothing if not versatile in his two-decade broadcasting career. Steve Coogan's iconic comedy creation has cropped up as sports reporter on The Day Today, chatshow host on the short-lived Knowing Me, Knowing You) and down-and-out TV star in I'm Alan Partridge.

The character has returned with renewed vigour in recent years, spearheaded by fresh writers - twins Neil Gibbons and Rob Gibbons - who were the driving force behind the gutbustingly-funny autobiography I, Partridge, webcam series Mid Morning Matters and Norfolk documentary Welcome to the Places of My Life. First Clip from Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa
Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa is just a few weeks from hitting the big screen on our shores, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it’s received when it does.

The full-length trailer that launched last month has been received with mixed reactions amongst people I’ve been talking to, and I have a feeling that the long-awaited film will have the same response in a few weeks’ time.

Following that recent new trailer, the first clip from the film has launched, via Yahoo Movies UK, giving us a look at Steve Coogan reprising his iconic role.
