No Holds Barred: When WWF Tried to Make Hulk Hogan a Movie Star
Image
While the names Vince McMahon and Hulk Hogan have been suplexed by controversy lately, it’s impossible to ignore how popular they had made the WWE, then WWF, back in the ’80s and ’90s. In 1989, the maniacal McMahon had a genius idea to make Hogan, already a megastar and the longtime world champion, even bigger. Let’s make him the biggest Hollywood actor, too! Enter No Holds Barred, Hulk Hogan’s first starring movie role and the first movie/wrestling crossover event ever! Oh, and did I mention it featured Friday favorite Tom “Tiny” Lister as the mega heel? Damn right. Let’s go!

Years before WWE Studios came into existence and gave us…*ahem* gems as The Scorpion King, The Marine, See No Evil, and The Chaperone, all led by WWE superstars, Vince McMahon got into movie-making with its precursor, Shane Distribution. McMahon might’ve played it safe with...

“Roger Corman Presents”: Remember When Corman and Showtime Made Cult Cinema Together in the 1990s?
Image
For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.

Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.

Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. With the banner “Roger Corman Presents,” Corman and company...

Need a laugh? Here's our guide to 25 comedies that are on Netflix UK now, and are well worth your time...

Putting aside all of the chunter about VPNs and rising subscription costs for a moment, there are more hidden gems to be discovered on Netflix UK than you might expect, and we've been combing through the streaming site's current catalogue to find some of the most underappreciated comedies on offer.

We've come up with this fairly broad selection of films that varies on several fronts. We've picked out a mix of belly laughers and dark comedies, with a couple of dramedies thrown in for good measure. They're not all big Hollywood comedies, but neither are they all films that you're hearing about for the first time, though we've tried to order them according to how well known they may or may not be. What they all have...

Miranda Kerr's Rumored Beau James Packer: Five Things to Know
Miranda Kerr
One of Australia's most eligible bachelors may now be off the market ... courtesy of Miranda Kerr. The former Victoria's Secret model - who announced her separation from Orlando Bloom after three years of marriage this fall - is rumored to be dating Aussie billionaire James Packer. Packer, 46, is a casino mogul and an insider tells People he and Kerr, 30, "are definitely seeing each other." (Though a Kerr source says the two are strictly friends.) In September, Packer announced that he had separated from his wife, Erica Baxter. The two were married in 2007 in a lavish ceremony on the French Riviera.

Filmmaker Roger Corman revives the Black Scorpion
Sexy superheroine the Black Scorpion is returning to guard the streets of Angel City, this time in a new comic book series.

Roger Corman's Black Scorpion is being published by Bluewater Productions in a partnership with the director, who is known mainly for his horror movie output.

The crimefighter previously featured in two made-for-cable movies in 1995 and 1997, both starring Joan Severance, and a 2001 Sci Fi Channel series starring Michelle Lintel.

The new comic book, out in November, will reintroduce and reimagine the scantily-clad vigilante who was created by Corman and producer Craig Nevius.

Nevius said: "Roger and I had always intended to create a comic book franchise based on the Black Scorpion movies and TV series.

"And with classic costumed superheroes back in vogue thanks to the success of the Batman and Iron Man movies, the time seemed right to bring back our costumed superheroine."

Written by genre veteran Paul Salamoff (Batman & Robin,...

[DVD Review] Born
Born put me in a unique position. In addition to getting to see Kane Hodder’s face (which is usually hidden behind Jason Vorhees’s trademark hockey mask), the film left me with the odd feeling that something small, yet entirely essential, was missing. I was about halfway through when I realized what it was: the presence of Mike Nelson (or Joel Hodgson), Tom Servo, and Crow T. Robot and their representative silhouettes at the bottom of the screen, simulating the front row of the Mystery Science Theater. For everyone who thought that the good old days of movies like Hobgoblins and Space Mutiny were over, I give you Born, the movie that brings gratuitous nudity and Satanic cults into the twenty-first century.

The film opens with a bearded man (Kane Hodder) coming into the office Dr. Sammael (Joan Severance). He hands her a gun, tells her that she can shoot him at any point,...

Kane Hodder and Vinnie Jones in new Lionsgate DVDs
If you can’t get enough of genre-film bad-asses Kane Hodder and Vinnie Jones, Lionsgate Home Entertainment has your fix this summer. New indie horror features starring the tough-guy actors are slated to hit DVD shelves in June.

Streeting June 23 is writer/director Brendan Foley’s Irish chiller Legend Of The Bog, a.k.a. Bog Bodies, starring The Midnight Meat Train’s Jones, Beyond Re-animator’s Jason Barry and Nora-Jane Noone from the Descent films, Doomsday and the upcoming Day Of The Triffids miniseries. The story centers on a 2,000-year-old murder victim who has been mummified in a peat bog, and is inadvertently awakened to terrorize a group of the living.

In Born, coming June 16, a virginal 21-year-old girl (Parasomnia’s Alison Brie) suddenly finds herself pregnant, with her growing fetus developing an evil influence over her. Hodder co-stars as Asmodeus/the Cardinal, and the cast also includes Joan Severance...
