The B-Side – Jordan Harper on She Rides Shotgun
Image
Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars, movie directors, and sometimes––sometimes––movie writers! Today, we speak with author and screenwriter Jordan Harper, whose novel She Rides Shotgun got made into a movie of the same name, directed by Nick Rowland and starring Taron Egerton and Ana Sophia Heger. The film is in theaters this Friday, August 1, 2025.

We spoke with Harper about adapting his novel for the big screen, his reaction to watching the final cut of the film, and those superb lead performances from Egerton and Heger. There’s mention of his other books The Last King of California and Everybody Knows, as well as B-Sides that reminded us of She Rides Shotgun, which include One False Move, Flesh & Bone, A Perfect World, and Lone Star. Harper mentions Freeway as well, which is a great call.

Harper brings up his new novel due out next year: A Violent Masterpiece.

Image
A new biography by Amy Odell offers an unflinching look at Gwyneth Paltrow’s life and career, from Hollywood royalty to wellness mogul. “Gwyneth: The Biography,” out now, traces the Oscar-winning actor’s journey from childhood — as the daughter of actor Blythe Danner and director-producer Bruce Paltrow — to addressing the infamous allegation that she stole the “Shakespeare in Love” script from Winona Ryder. Odell draws on more than 200 interviews with people who know or have worked with Paltrow. Notably, Paltrow herself did not participate in the interviews.

Variety has reached out to Paltrow’s rep for comment.

Read on for 11 of the biggest revelations from “Gwyneth: The Biography.”

1. Paltrow’s father, director-producer Bruce Paltrow, was furious when she signed with her first manager, Joanne Horowitz, who, at the time, repped a then-unknown Kevin Spacey.

Shortly after graduating from high school in 1990, Paltrow appeared in a stage production of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,...

The full first trailer for the 10-part international series debuted on May 5 after the finale of NCIS Season 22.

It was recently revealed that NCIS: Tony & Ziva will be set in an entirely different timeline from the original series. Dennis Quaid Knows Why Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp Flopped
Image
Dennis Quaid is the movie star who inexplicably never was. The Houston-born hellraiser with the devil-may-care grin flashed palpable leading man potential with his portrayal of the former star quarterback who finds a measure of redemption astride a bicycle in Peter Yates' wonderful coming-of-age sports flick "Breaking Away." This potential turned into a veritable guarantee of future A-list dominance when he swaggered his way through "The Right Stuff" as Project Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper. Who's the best actor you ever saw? You might just be looking at him.

Quaid was almost always great, but the films that were supposed to launch him to superstardom kept underperforming. Wolfgang Petersen's "Enemy Mine," an underrated sci-fi riff on "The Defiant Ones," was horribly mis-marketed by 20th Century Fox, Joe Dante's brilliant "Innerspace" got hung out to dry by Warner Bros. over the 1987 July 4th holiday, and Jim McBride's wild-sexy New Orleans noir "The Big Easy,...

The B-Side – Gwyneth Paltrow (with Cory Everett)
Image
Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.

Today we gush (and hush) over Gwyneth Paltrow with our past, present, and future guest Cory Everett, creator of Cinephile: A Card Game and the ever-expanding My First Movie books!

Our B-Sides today are: Flesh and Bone, Hard Eight, Hush, and Sliding Doors. The main focus revolves around her banner year of 1998. Paltrow had Five films released in ‘98, including Shakespeare in Love, which won her an Oscar.

We talk about her superb SNL opening monologue from 1999 (and her cameo in Ben Affleck’s monologue the next year), her deep cultural resonance at the time (some credit her for bringing the color pink back into fashion), the films she made before and after Emma, and her waning movie star era after...

Leonard Engelman, Makeup Artist on ‘Rocky IV,’ ‘Moonstruck’ and Much More, Dies at 83
Image
Leonard Engelman, the esteemed makeup artist who worked on films including Rocky IV, The Princess Diaries, Batman & Robin and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and did Cher’s makeup for more than 30 years, has died. He was 83.

Engelman died Thursday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, his wife of 42 years, artist Esther Engelman, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unclear, she said.

The son of a Hollywood makeup artist, Engelman labored for a long time to convince the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to install a makeup branch, as those artisans had always been “at-large” members. And when it did so in 2006, he was elected its first governor. Later, he worked to have hairstylists added.

He also served as an Academy vice president and board member for many years.

Engelman received Emmy nominations in 1972 for an episode of Night Gallery and in 2001 for the miniseries Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis,...

I'm Way More Confident In Amazon's Fourth Wing TV Show Thanks To This TV Episode That's 10/10 On IMDb
Image
Fourth Wing Amazon series in expert hands, with renowned showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett leading the TV adaptation. Fourth Wing boasts 2 million book sales worldwide, with a huge fan base eagerly awaiting the upcoming TV series release. Show's massive budget, experienced production team, and popular source material set it up to be a major success in late 2025.

Now that the Fourth Wing Amazon series is in exceptional development hands, I feel much more confident about how it will come to be. Based on the incredibly successful Empyrean fantasy book series written by Rebecca Yarros, which also includes 2023's Iron Flame and the upcoming Onyx Storm, Fourth Wing is one of the most hotly anticipated new series in development at Amazon, right up there with HBO's upcoming Harry Potter adaptation. Fourth Wing has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has been on the New York Times Best Sellers List for nine months straight.

Image
Prime Video's television adaptation of the popular fantasy book Fourth Wing just got some heat behind it as Moira Walley-Beckett, best known as the creator of Anne with an E and a writer on Breaking Bad, has been tapped as the showrunner. Violet is enrolled by her mother to become a dragon rider in a story that could be pitched as Top Gun meets How to Train Your Dragon, with a lot of romance.

According to Variety, Moira Walley-Beckett has joined Prime Video's Fourth Wing television adaptation as series showrunner. The series, produced by Amazon MGM and Michael B. Jordans Outlier Society, entered development in October 2023. Walley-Beckett will also serve...

Amazons Fourth Wing Series Just Found Its Showrunner
Image
Finally, theres an update on the series adaptation of Rebecca Yarros romantasy novel, Fourth Wing, as Variety reveals that Moira Walley-Beckett has been added to the creative team as its showrunner. Perhaps best known as the creator of Netflix and CBCs Anne With an E, Walley-Becketts list of credits is an incredibly impressive one that puts her as an excellent choice to take on the daunting task of winning over so many book lovers. Also in her repertoire, Walley-Beckett worked with Starz as the creator and showrunner of the networks limited series Flesh and Bone, and also stepped into the writers room and as a co-executive producer for six years on AMCs Breaking Bad, the latter of which made her a three-time Emmy Award winner.

The Gritty Neo-Noir Western That Shows a Different Side of Meg Ryan
Image
In the late '80s and throughout the '90s, Meg Ryan absolutely owned the rom-com genre. From unforgettable roles in When Harry Met Sally to collaborations with Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail, she cornered the market as "the girl next door" who was just so likable. When she stepped out of her comfort zone in 1993 with the neo-noir Western drama Flesh and Bone, it was risky considering the niche she had already carved out for herself in Hollywood. And even though it didn't pay off at the box office, Ryan delivered a performance that made audiences take note that she was far more versatile than we were giving her credit for. Flesh and Bone is a slow burn, and Ryan shines in the part of Kay Davies. At the peak of her powers, how did Ryan not draw a larger crowd alongside a cast that included Dennis Quaid,...

The Cult Share New Songs “Flesh and Bone” and “C.O.T.A.” Under Death Cult Moniker: Stream
Image
The Cult have shared two new songs under their Death Cult moniker, “Flesh and Bone” and “C.O.T.A.”

The tracks come after The Cult’s Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy revived the early incarnation of the band for a recent tour. Death Cult originally emerged from Asbury’s first band Southern Death Cult in 1983 once the singer joined forces with Duffy (eventually morphing into The Cult in 1984).

Described as post-punk/deathrock, Death Cult’s sound is a bit murkier and more cryptic than the big stadium-ready bombast Astbury and company injected into The Cult. As heard on “Flesh and Bone,” the band balances subdued instrumentation with harsher crescendos and a feeling of unease, which is even more palpable on the sparse, drum-machine-based “C.O.T.A.” (an acronym for “communion of the animals”).

The new songs are available digitally and on a 7″ vinyl single titled “Death Cult – 8323” that’s included as...

Meg Ryan's New Movie Continues A Horrible 25-Year Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
Meg Ryan's new movie What Happens Later receives negative reviews, continuing her 25-year streak of poorly-reviewed films. Critics find the plot and construction of the movie problematic, with reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes stating that it lacks humor and has more serious overtones than expected. Although Meg Ryan's comedic timing and conversational style shine in the film, David Duchovny's performance falls short in matching her charisma.

Once thought of as "America's Sweetheart" because of her endearing roles in a series of romantic comedies and heartwarming films, Meg Ryan's new movie What Happens Later continues a 25-year Rotten Tomatoes streak of negative reviews. Ryan became one of the most beloved actresses in the world after moves like You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, and When Harry Met Sally. Since the early 2000s, however, her career has been more defined by a long run of flops and poorly reviewed films. After taking a break from acting,...

What Happened to Gwyneth Paltrow?
Image
Gwyneth Paltrow had a sensational start to her career in the late '90s, starring in hit movies like Shakespeare in Love and Se7en. Paltrow continued to be a popular leading lady in the 2000s, starring in diverse films like Shallow Hal and The Royal Tenenbaums. Recently, Paltrow has taken a step back from acting to focus on her wellness brand Goop, but fans can still enjoy her acclaimed performances in films like Iron Man and the MCU.

Gwyneth Paltrow skyrocketed to superstardom in the late ‘90s when she delivered her Oscar-winning performance as Viola in Shakespeare in Love. Paltrow comes from a decorated Hollywood family — her parents are actress Blythe Danner and movie director-producer Bruce Paltrow, and she found immense success on the big screen with sensational roles in Se7en, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Royal Tenenbaums, and of course the aforementioned historical romance picture.

Titanic: This Oscar-Winning Actress Was Almost Cast as Rose Bukater
Image
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet's on-screen chemistry in Titanic is fundamental to the film's success, but they weren't the first choices for the roles. Gwyneth Paltrow turned down the role of Rose in Titanic, jokingly stating that she chose other films with "great characters and stories" instead of a movie about a ship. Despite missing out on Titanic, Paltrow's career remained successful, and she went on to win an Oscar for her lead role in Shakespeare in Love just two years later.

We know an actor has nailed the role perfectly when their performance is deemed "iconic" and forever imprinted in our minds in such a way that we can't possibly picture someone else playing the character. Of course, an occupational hazard in filmmaking, actors do turn down or are rejected from famous roles in Hollywood. In the case of Titanic, James Cameron's original casting choices didn't materialize,...

The second season of Foundation, Apple TV+’s expansive adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s eponymous book series, could be subtitled “Flesh and Bone.” God-like figures become vulnerable, ideas take on a physical form, and people’s desires are on full display (the fullest; more on that in a bit). The more abstract notions from Asimov’s books — like psychohistory, a kind of math that predicts human behavior on a massive scale — are made more tangible in Season 2, as series creators David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman put new faces to this battle for the future of humanity, and give them all distinct motivations for joining the fight.

What Happened to Meg Ryan's Career?
Image
At one point, Meg Ryan was one of Hollywood's most bankable names. With classics such as When Harry Met Sally... and Sleepless in Seattle, the actor garnered wide critical acclaim for her performances and a significant fan base. From the 1980s until the early 2000s, the decades in which the popularity of romantic comedies was at its peak, Meg Ryan was one of the many actors who at one time reigned as the queen of the genre.

Update May 4, 2023: This article has been updated with further information regarding Meg Ryan, including details on her upcoming film What Happens Later.

While her name is primarily still synonymous with romantic comedies, her body of work encompasses a wide range of projects that exhibit her capacity as an actor. Regardless, her career has somewhat faded into a relative lull, at least by the measure of online buzz and discussion. Does this reflect...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: March 2023
Image
With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.

We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.

Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

Everything Coming to Prime Video in March 2023
Image
March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.

For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

Animanía (2020)
Hulu New Releases: November 2021
Animanía (2020)
As the Hollywood blockbuster machine continues to dust itself off and release some early winter hits, Hulu is going in a bit of a different direction with its list of new releases for November 2021.

There are no big Hulu original films of note this month. Instead there’s a whole host of original series. The TV parade starts on Nov. 5 with the release of Animaniacs season 2. Also getting a second season this month is monarchal comedy The Great on Nov. 19. The most intriguing series, however, is animated Marvel comedy Marvel’s Hit Monkey. As its name so graciously implies, this is a show about a hit monkey…as in monkey assassin. Naturally the hit monkey is haunted by the ghost of Jason Sudeikis because it’s important that everything make sense.

Though Hulu doesn’t have any original movies in November, its list of library movie titles is quite vast.

With her quirky personality and perky smile, Meg Ryan reigned as queen of romantic comedies for over two decades after stumbling onto an acting career during her college years. Over the past 30 years, the blond-haired, blue-eyed actress has carved out a diverse and successful career, making her one of the most popular actresses of her time.

Ryan was born November 19, 1961, in Fairfield, Connecticut. After graduating high school, she majored in journalism at New York University, and began acting to earn extra money, adopting the name Meg Ryan (taken from her grandmother’s maiden name). Following appearances in TV commercials and her film debut in George Cukor‘s final film “Rich and Famous,” Ryan gained fame as half of one of the most popular soap opera super couples with her portrayal of Betsy Stewart Montgomery on “As the World Turns” from 1982-1984. Her successes led her to drop out of college...

New York’s Movie-Famous Strand Bookstore Says Funds Depleted, Makes Customer Plea
Image
The Strand, New York City’s 93-year-old independent bookstore so familiar as an East Village literary signifier that it’s long been a go-to for filmmakers and location scouts, is in danger of closing, its owner says.

The three-story shop and its “18 miles” of new and used books has appeared in such movies and TV shows as Remember Me, The Romanoffs, Absolutely Fabulous, Sex and the City, Six Degrees of Separation, Julie & Julia, Flesh and Bone, Master of None, the 2011 Arthur remake and the 2020 doc The Booksellers, but has seen a devastating decline in revenue since the start of the Covid-19 shutdown.

“Our revenue has dropped nearly 70% compared to last year, and the loans and cash reserves that have kept us afloat these past months are depleted,” says Nancy Bass Wyden, the third generation owner of the Strand, in an Instagram and Twitter message posted Friday. The granddaughter of...

NOS4A2 Season 2: Jami O’Brien On Humanizing Charlie Manx
Image
The following contains spoilers for NOS4A2 season 2 episode 7.

Despite having significant experience in the world of television, NOS4A2 showrunner Jami O’Brien, like the rest of us, isn’t quite sure where the industry is going to go. She’s as in the dark as anyone during the time of Covid-19 and a growing rift between online streaming services and traditional cable and broadcast television. However, rather than being intimidated, she’s game for the challenge.

“Every day it changes and I think it’s still changing. It may change again into something that we have no idea about, you know what I mean? But all that said, I mean any opportunity to make something, I embrace,” O’Brien told Den of Geek during a San Diego Comic-Con At Home interview.

That game-for-anything mentality is certainly on display when considering her accomplishments as a writer and producer on cult favorites like Flesh and Bone,...

Toby Stephens in Black Sails (2014)
Starz Offers Free Streaming of Select Series Without a Subscription
Toby Stephens in Black Sails (2014)
Starz is offering free streaming to non-members for the rest of March. The network will allow people to stream select titles from their library as everybody attempts to stay indoors. The coronavirus is continuing to spread throughout the world, which has found some people in mandatory quarantine. While most of North America has not gotten to that point, it could happen, which means there's going to be even more streaming going on in the next few weeks.

Starz is allowing non-subscribers to stream the first full seasons of Black Sails and Vida, along with the pilots of a number of their original shows. At this time, the free deal will last until the end of March, though it could very well be extended and even add in more titles at the same time. As of this writing, America To Me, American Gods, Wrong Man, Magic City, Party Down, Ash vs Evil Dead,...

Quaid Pro Quo: The Best of Dennis Quaid
Today sees the DVD release of The Intruder, a new film in which Dennis Quaid plays the ex-owner of a house who doesn’t take too kindly to the new owners when he is forced to sell it. The psychological thriller was directed by Deon Taylor and written by David Loughery and gives Quaid the opportunity to terrify audiences with an intensity which marked out much of his best work. To that end Cai Ross looks back at some of his greatest roles.

For about 20 years, Dennis Quaid was Hollywood’s nearly-man. Following a break-out performance in Peter Yates’s wonderful cycling drama Breaking Away in 1979, it seemed that the world might just have found its new James Dean. Impressive performances in Walter Hill’s familial Western The Long Riders (alongside elder sibling Randy and a host of Keach and Carradine brothers) and Philip Kaufman’s epic space drama The Right Stuff,...
