Today, we speak with author and screenwriter Jordan Harper, whose novel She Rides Shotgun got made into a movie of the same name, directed by Nick Rowland and starring Taron Egerton and Ana Sophia Heger. The film is in theaters this Friday, August 1, 2025.

We spoke with Harper about adapting his novel for the big screen, his reaction to watching the final cut of the film, and those superb lead performances from Egerton and Heger. There’s mention of his other books The Last King of California and Everybody Knows, as well as B-Sides that reminded us of She Rides Shotgun, which include One False Move, Flesh & Bone, A Perfect World, and Lone Star. Harper mentions Freeway as well, which is a great call.

A new biography by Amy Odell offers an unflinching look at Gwyneth Paltrow’s life and career, from Hollywood royalty to wellness mogul. “Gwyneth: The Biography,” out now, traces the Oscar-winning actor’s journey from childhood — as the daughter of actor Blythe Danner and director-producer Bruce Paltrow — to addressing the infamous allegation that she stole the “Shakespeare in Love” script from Winona Ryder. Odell draws on more than 200 interviews with people who know or have worked with Paltrow. Notably, Paltrow herself did not participate in the interviews.

Variety has reached out to Paltrow’s rep for comment.

Moira Walley-Beckett is out as showrunner of Amazon’s planned Fourth Wing adaptation, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

WandaVision and Agatha All Along creator Jac Schaeffer has signed a deal with Amazon MGM Studios, and is being eyed to replace Walley-Beckett as Fourth Wing showrunner. The Fourth Wing TV project hails from Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society.

Schaeffer also wrote the Black Widow movie.

Walley-Beckett was a Breaking Bad writer and producer — she wrote “Ozymandias,” as well as a bunch of other episodes — and she created the series Anne With an E. She also wrote the Flesh and Bone miniseries and penned three episodes of NBC’s highly anticipated flameout Pan Am. Walley-Beckett signed on to showrun Amazon’s Fourth Wing last summer; Fourth Wing has not yet been ordered to series and does not yet have a cast attached.

Fox Entertainment has unveiled plans for an upcoming drama series called “Billionaire Apocalypse.” The show will explore themes of wealth inequality and social responsibility. It was created by Jay Carson, known for his work on “The Morning Show.”

“Billionaire Apocalypse” will follow the richest man in the world after a financial crisis causes his wealth to disappear. With his money gone, he loses power and control over his employees and family. The series looks at how this affects the relationships of those who relied on his wealth.

Carson will write and produce the show. He has experience in both politics and entertainment. Previously, Carson worked as a spokesperson in the U.S. Senate and for President Bill Clinton. Later he produced “House of Cards” for Netflix and created “The Morning Show” for Apple TV+.

Hollywood star Hugh Jackman and veterans Lawrence Bender and Kevin Brown will also serve as executive producers.

Fox is developing a drama series about the richest man in the world having to flee his private island after a global financial collapse.

Billionaire Apocalypse (w/t) comes from The Morning Show creator Jay Carson, who will write, and exec producers including Hugh Jackman, Pulp Fiction producer Lawrence Bender and Kevin Brown, exec producer of Starz’ Flesh and Bone.

The network is unveiling the project at Mipcom, where it is hunting for international partners.

Fox Entertainment Studios is producing and it will be distributed internationally by Fox Entertainment Global.

The series follows the richest man on the planet, 200 of his employees, and his family as they are forced to flee to his private island in the wake of a global financial collapse, where the employees and family members — who he’s treated as afterthoughts for decades — quickly realize he’s no longer rich and thus no longer in charge.

Fox said late Sunday night that it is developing a drama series tentatively titled Billionaire Apocalypse that hails from The Morning Show creator Jay Carson and counts Hugh Jackman among its executive producers.

The drama, from Fox Entertainment Studios for the Fox network, is written and executive produced by Carson, creator and writer of Apple+’s Emmy-nominated Morning Show. Also serving as exec producers are Lawrence Bender (Flesh and Bone, Pulp Fiction) and Kevin Brown (Flesh and Bone, Trumbo).

The logline for the drama: “The richest man on the planet, 200 of his employees, and his family are forced to flee to his private island in the wake of a global financial collapse, where the employees and family members — who he’s treated as afterthoughts for decades — quickly realize he’s no longer rich and thus no longer in charge.”

The project, which has received a script commitment, is being distributed worldwide by Fox Entertainment Global.

Leonard Engelman, the esteemed makeup artist who worked on films including Rocky IV, The Princess Diaries, Batman & Robin and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and did Cher’s makeup for more than 30 years, has died. He was 83.

Engelman died Thursday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, his wife of 42 years, artist Esther Engelman, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unclear, she said.

The son of a Hollywood makeup artist, Engelman labored for a long time to convince the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to install a makeup branch, as those artisans had always been “at-large” members. And when it did so in 2006, he was elected its first governor. Later, he worked to have hairstylists added.

He also served as an Academy vice president and board member for many years.

Weinstein died at her home in New York, her daughter, Hannah Rosenberg, told The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death was revealed.

“The world is a lesser place without my mother,” Rosenberg said in a statement. “She was a masterful producer and a force of nature for the things she believed in, including the many projects that spanned her illustrious career, the stories she fought to tell and the social justice causes she championed.”

In September, Weinstein exited Tribeca Enterprises, which she joined as executive vp in 2013, to work on political campaigns. She earlier was a vp at Warner Bros., an executive vp at 20th Century Fox and president of United Artists.

The Cult have shared two new songs under their Death Cult moniker, “Flesh and Bone” and “C.O.T.A.”

The tracks come after The Cult’s Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy revived the early incarnation of the band for a recent tour. Death Cult originally emerged from Asbury’s first band Southern Death Cult in 1983 once the singer joined forces with Duffy (eventually morphing into The Cult in 1984).

Described as post-punk/deathrock, Death Cult’s sound is a bit murkier and more cryptic than the big stadium-ready bombast Astbury and company injected into The Cult. As heard on “Flesh and Bone,” the band balances subdued instrumentation with harsher crescendos and a feeling of unease, which is even more palpable on the sparse, drum-machine-based “C.O.T.A.” (an acronym for “communion of the animals”).

The second season of Foundation, Apple TV+’s expansive adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s eponymous book series, could be subtitled “Flesh and Bone.” God-like figures become vulnerable, ideas take on a physical form, and people’s desires are on full display (the fullest; more on that in a bit). The more abstract notions from Asimov’s books — like psychohistory, a kind of math that predicts human behavior on a massive scale — are made more tangible in Season 2, as series creators David S. Amazon Prime Video has popped off with plenty of new content for March 2023 with original shows and some great catches for films to stream. “Top Gun: Maverick” will arrive March 24, and Jordan Peele’s “Nope” before that on March 21. With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.

We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.

Exclusive: Broadway playwright and American Rust TV writer Adam Rapp has signed with CAA in all areas.

Rapp, whose many plays have been staged at regional and Off Broadway venues, made his Broadway debut in 2019 with The Sound Inside starring Mary-Louise Parker. The drama was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play, and Parker won the Best Actress award for her performance. Rapp’s play Red Light Winter was a a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2006.

His television writing credits The L Word, In Treatment, Flesh and Bone, Vinyl, The Looming Tower and, most recently, American Rust.

Rapp has directed films including Winter Passing, Blackbird and Loitering With Intent.

In addition to numerous plays, Rapp is the author of the novel The Year of Endless Sorrows and several YA novels, including Under the Wolf, Under the Dog, which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

Paramount+ has already greenlit a second season of “Halo” over a month before the series premiere. David Wiener will join the series as showrunner and executive producer.

Based on the popular Xbox video game franchise, the first season of “Halo” doesn’t premiere at the streamer until March 24.

As the Hollywood blockbuster machine continues to dust itself off and release some early winter hits, Hulu is going in a bit of a different direction with its list of new releases for November 2021.

There are no big Hulu original films of note this month. Instead there’s a whole host of original series. The TV parade starts on Nov. 5 with the release of Animaniacs season 2. Also getting a second season this month is monarchal comedy The Great on Nov. 19. The most intriguing series, however, is animated Marvel comedy Marvel’s Hit Monkey. As its name so graciously implies, this is a show about a hit monkey…as in monkey assassin. Naturally the hit monkey is haunted by the ghost of Jason Sudeikis because it’s important that everything make sense.

Though Hulu doesn’t have any original movies in November, its list of library movie titles is quite vast.

Moira Walley-Beckett's Flesh and Bone mini-series isn't just for ballet enthusiasts because its themes run much deeper than the elegant sport. Exclusive: Nicole Beharie (Miss Juneteenth), Corey Stoll (House of Cards) and Tovah Feldshuh (Broadway’s Yentl) have been cast in supporting roles in HBO’s Scenes from a Marriage, a limited series adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s classic miniseries. Starring and executive produced by Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac, it comes from Our Boys and The Affair co-creator Hagai Levi, Michael Ellenberg’s Media Res and Endeavor Content.

Written and directed by Levi, the series adaptation re-examines the show’s iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple.

Levi executive produces with Ellenberg via Media Res, Lars Blomgren (The Bridge), Chastain, Isaac, Daniel Bergman, Blair Breard and Amy Herzog. The series is a co-production with Media Res and Endeavor Content.

In addition to Chastain and Isaac, Beharie, Stoll and Feldshuh join previously announced Sunita Mani, who also is cast in a supporting role.

“The Jude Problem” by Amy Guyler has topped The Brit List, an annual showcase of unproduced screenplays out of the U.K.

The list was compiled from recommendations by British production companies, talent agencies, financiers and broadcasters.

Guyler, represented by The Agency, received 12 recommendations for “The Jude Problem,” a comedy drama to which producer Headline Pictures (“The Man in the High Castle”) is attached. Guyler has also written the well regarded plays “Digging Deep” and “The Nobodies.”

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to The Place of No Words, the fantasy-reality drama written and directed by Mark Webber and starring Webber, his real-life wife Teresa Palmer and their son Bodhi Palmer.

The pic, which originally premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, will now be released in theaters and on demand on October 23.

Continuing Webber’s aesthetic of using elements from his real life to enhance his storytelling, he again has cast his own family members. The pic begins as Bodhi, age 3, asks “Where do we go when we die?” It launches his real family on an adventure that moves between the real world and a fantasy realm filled with mythical creatures to explore how we cope with dying, and the love, laughter and pain we can find within it.
