Australia's known for its deadly wildlife, but Dangerous Animals asks-what if the most dangerous predator was serial killer steve irwin? This sunlit survival horror follows Zephyr, an American surfer abducted by a shark-obsessed madman (a delightfully unhinged Jai Courtney) who feeds tourists to great whites as eco-reparations. It's a wild premise, but the relentless tension, grounded action, and unexpectedly emotional beats make it work. With beautiful real shark footage, clever set-ups and payoffs, and one of the gnarliest self-surgery scenes i've seen in a while, the film manages to be scary, ridiculous, and empowering all at once. A brutal, blood-soaked ride that somehow still finds time for a killer dance scene and a touch of heart.
Couldn't take my eyes off the screen! Drama, action, psychologically thrilling, this movie delivers it all. The pacing was great too, it pulls off the perfect balance for a thriller. It draws you in throughout the entirety of the movie without having too much going on at any given time. I loved the ending too, there's so many twists that you just genuinely aren't expecting to happen. I'll definitely be rewatching after it comes out on streaming services & I can't wait to watch it again. This movie is a definite underdog coming up that deserves to be a blockbuster, absolutely great movie & worth the watch!
Fun, sexy... messy at times.. but who cares because it was all-in-all a good time!
While the attacks seemed short lived and minimal, they were extremely effective. Sharks happen to be a huge fear of mine, so it poked at many of my hard to reach itches for jump scares. While in the moment I believed the moments of terror were short-lived, I understand now that the that particular scene will stick with me for the rest of my life. It was truly horrifying for anyone afraid of sharks(even if they weren't really the true villains of the film)
The story had some cheesy romance we could have done without. And some of the escape routes were a tad over the top.
But this was hands down the most realistic and haunting shark attack films I've seen. ALSO Jai's character Tucker was 10/10. He was born for that role. Summers about to be here, and I don't plan on going into the water any time soon. Thanks Sean Byrne!

Last nights Cineworld "Secret Screaming" screening ended up being "Dangerous Animals". The crowd seemed largely happy with that outcome and, as it not always the case with these screenings - pretty much everybody stayed for the whole film.
Zephyr (Hassie Harrison) meets charming Moses (Josh Heuston) and they spend a lovely evening together. To his disappointment, she skips away in the early hours to go surfing. She doesn't make it to the waves though as she's kidnapped by Tucker (Jai Courtney). On his boat, out at sea, she wakes up chained to her bed, with Heather (Ella Newton) in the next one across. Unfortunately for them, Tucker is a killer who likes to use his boats crane to feed women to the sharks that inhabit the Australian coastal waters.
There are certainly elements to like with this film. Jai Courtney is perhaps the films biggest strength. Tucker is certainly a horrible monster, with more than a hint of misogyny in his selection of vulnerable women as his targets. But he's charismatic with it, largely looking like he's having a blast with the role. He's matched by Harrison, the films real lead, and it's her survival story that the film revolves around.
The films budget feels relatively small, but I have to say that the sharks, a mixture of real footage in some early scenes and CGI when required later in the film look good. Actually, the film in general looks good, with attractive shots of the Australian coast and taking some time to explain the geography of the ship to you which is helpful when it becomes relevant later.
There's a lot of tension to the film, but I'm not sure that I'd describe it as being scary. The idea of being lowered into shark infested water is pretty horrible, but in terms of what you actually see, I didn't think it was particularly gory either.
I will say that perhaps this is the sort of film that you only need to see the once and won't require many repeated viewings once you know what's coming and where, but it was fun on this first viewing.

7.5/10 STARS - Dangerous Animals was Regal's Monday mystery movie on May 26. It's about a serial killer who has an obsession with sharks. The opening scene sets up his character, giving us a little hint about why he is the way he is. Jai Courtney's performance in this scene and the entire moving was chilling in its convincing nature. When the switch flipped, revealing him to not be the easygoing, friendly shark tour guide he seemed to be, it was shocking in its swiftness. We are then introduced to the main character in the story, Zephyr, who is a loner living the van life and surfing every chance she can. She meets Moses, and there's an instant attraction between them but she takes off for an early-morning surf and that's when she gets taken (another scene that was startling when the moment happened, even though you KNEW it was coming). The rest of the movie is basically a survival tale and it flowed well. Dangerous Animals is only about an hour and a half, yet it felt SO much longer. I don't say that as a criticism, but to underscore its effectiveness in making the story SO intense that it feels longer than it really is (like my experience with Warfare). As the movie plays out, we find out more about both Zephyr and her captor and the things that make them similar to one another. Yet at the same time, what separates them. Despite some writing issues that happen in various parts (a character not seizing the upper hand fully when they have the chance, characters being able to bounce back too quickly after an significant injury, and sharks conveniently not attacking in certain moments), Dangerous Animals was a solid horror/thriller/suspense movie with an interesting premise and standout performances, especially by Jai Courtney. Video review will be available on my YouTube channel.
