Gerard Butler's Critically Mauled 18% Rt Disaster Movie Gets Second Chance on Streaming
Image
Gerard Butler kicked off the year on the big screen with Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, but the year before his first outing as Big Nick, he headlined a sci-fi disaster movie that critics tore apart — and that film has just secured a fresh streaming home. Released in 2017, Geostorm tells the story of a scientist racing to stop a system of climate-control satellites when they suddenly turn against Earth. Geostorm is currently available on Tubi, but Paramount+ has confirmed it will join the platform beginning September 1.

Despite earning a meager 18% from critics and 35% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, the film managed to pull in $221 million worldwide on a $120 million budget.

Gerard Butler’s Infamous 18% Rotten Tomatoes Sci-Fi Thriller Returns to Streaming Soon
Image
Gerard Butler began the year in movies with Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, but one year before he played the famous Big Nick for the first time, he starred in a critically panned sci-fi film that just landed a new streaming home. 2017 brought on the release of Geostorm, the sci-fi disaster thriller following a scientist who must stop a network of climate change satellites that begin to attack Earth unexpectedly. Geostorm is currently only streaming on Tubi, but Paramount+ has announced that it will begin streaming on the platform starting next month, on September 1. Geostorm earned “Rotten” scores of 18% from critics and 35% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but it still grossed $221 million at the global box office against a $120 million budget.

It’s been reported that Jerry Bruckheimer was brought on to produce the film during its final leg of post-production, and it was in such bad shape that Warner Bros....

Watch Gerard Butler’s $221 Million Disaster Thriller He Called “A Cautionary Tale” Before It Leaves Streaming Soon
Image
Gerard Butler’s new movie, the live-action How to Train Your Dragon film, is now playing in theaters everywhere, but one of his more unique flicks approaching its tenth anniversary just got a disappointing streaming update. Butler stars alongside Landman’s Andy Garcia in Geostorm, the 2017 disaster thriller following two estranged scientist brothers who have to solve a global climate catastrophe. Geostorm has been streaming on Netflix since April, and the film even settled into an extraordinary run of success shortly after its debut, but Netflix has since announced that it will leave the platform at the end of the month on June 30. During a 2013 interview on Good Morning America to promote the film, Butler described Geostorm as “a cautionary tale” and “a little bit scary,” but he maintains that its message is still largely positive.

While Geostorm gained momentum ahead of its release, the film was poorly received by...

Gerard Butler’s 18% Rotten Tomatoes Sci-Fi Thriller Is a Surprise Hit on Netflix
Image
One of Gerard Butler’s most forgotten movies is stirring up a storm on Netflix nearly 10 years after being released. Butler stars alongside Andy Garcia and Ed Harris in Geostorm, the 2017 sci-fi/disaster thriller that tells the story of a team of scientists led by Jake Lawson (Butler) who race against the clock to save Earth from a dangerous geostorm that is capable of wiping out the entire planet. Geostorm recently made its streaming debut on Netflix to kick off April and has found major success on the platform, climbing to the #4 spot in the streamer’s top 10. Geostorm earned “rotten” scores of 18% from critics and 35% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but the film grossed over $220 million at the global box office, including $187 million in international markets.

Dean Devlin wrote and directed Geostorm, with Paul Guyot also contributing to the script. Geostorm was Devlin’s directorial debut, and he followed...

I Came By Trailer: Babak Anvari's Latest Is Ready To Thrill You On Netflix Today
Image
Netflix may be undervaluing their latest original thriller from Babak Anvari by unceremoniously dropping it on the streaming platform today, but we at /Film know a solid thriller when we see it and will happily pick up the mantle to sing its praises. Directed by Anvari from a script he co-wrote with Namsi Khan, "I Came By" is a twisty thriller about a young graffiti artist named Toby Nealey (George MacKay) who intentionally tags the homes of the elite, but gets more than he bargained for after breaking into the home of a high-profile judge Hector Blake (Hugh Bonneville) and discovering the truth of his hidden basement.

Now, Tobey has put himself and his loved ones in harm's way, as Blake will do anything to keep his secret under wraps. Netflix describes the film with the tagline "Privilege hides the darkest secrets," which sounds like a no-brainer hit for the streaming juggernaut.

Young Justice: Phantoms – Zod, Klarion, and Darkseid
Lacey Chabert, Danica McKellar, Jesse McCartney, Nolan North, Stephanie Lemelin, Khary Payton, and Denise Boutte in Justicia Joven (2010)
This Young Justice: Phantoms review contains spoilers.

Young Justice: Phantoms Season 4 Episode 24

It’s not possible for the Young Justice: Phantoms team to be reading what’s published on this little ol’ site and responding to it in almost real time. The lead time on animation is usually massive: what we see on HBO Max was probably written a year or more ago. That said, it certainly feels like the writers were thinking the same thing I was after last week: holy cats there’s a lot left to do.

And this week they started crossing stuff off their list.

General Zod

By my count, we’ve got three episodes left, and three villains that the story is orbiting around. The first is General Zod, who along with a Phantom Zone-brainwashed Conner Kent, spends much of the episode kicking the asses of the original team minus M’gann.

M’gann,...

"But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare."

“No Good Deed was inspired by my many late nights during the early pandemic maniacally searching Zillow listings for a way out of my house,” said Feldman.

Oscars: Will Packer Set To Produce 2022 Academy Awards
Image
Will Packer has been named Producer of the 94th Annual Academy Awards, set for March 27.

This will be the first Oscar show to be produced by Packer, a prolific producer of numerous films and TV projects including Straight Outta Compton, Ride Along, Girls Trip, the Think Like a Man films and the television remake of Roots, for which he received an Emmy nomination. But his credits do not include a lot of live TV projects, so taking on the Oscars will be a relatively new experience. His wide-ranging credits in comedy give hope that he also will be creating a fun Academy Awards.

The Academy clearly is looking for fresh ideas and new directions after the pandemic-affected, critically derided and record-low-rated 2021 telecast produced by the trio of Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins. Of course the ratings collapse of that show, which was delayed to April 25, was not entirely...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: September 2021
Image
Though the summer movie season is winding down (if it ever really started this year), Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for September 2021 is chock full of worthwhile movie options.

For starters, Amazon’s library movie titles are quite good this month. September 1 sees the arrivals of heavyweights such as Apollo 13, Arachnophobia, Romeo + Juliet, The Descent, and The Social Network. And if that weren’t enough, the streamer is trying out some intriguing original movies as well. Cinderella, a modern update on the classic fairy tale, premieres on September 3. That will be followed by “exotic thriller” The Voyeurs (Sept. 10), musical adaptation Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (Sept. 17), and French thriller The Mad Woman’s Ball (Sept. 17).

Will Packer & EbonyLife Acquire Rights To Bloomberg Article About Fall Of “Billionaire Gucci Master” Ramon Abbas; Action Thriller Set Up At Universal
Image
Will Packer Productions and Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Studios are teaming to develop an untitled project based on Evan Ratliff’s Bloomberg article, “The Fall of the Billionaire Gucci Master.”

The companies won the rights in a highly competitive situation and have set up the project at Universal Pictures.

Ratliff’s article digs into the story of Nigerian Instagram influencer Ramon Abbas. The figure otherwise known as Hushpuppi, or the Billionaire Gucci Master, is alleged to have perfected a simple internet scam that allowed him to launder millions of dollars.

Packer and Abu’s project is described as a globetrotting action thriller — a hybrid of Catch Me If You Can and The Usual Suspects.

Writer discussions are said to be progressing quickly.

Will Packer and James Lopez will produce through their Will Packer Productions, with Abudu producing for EbonyLife.

“EbonyLife is uniquely positioned to ensure the depth and authenticity of this film,...

Only this time, we're going to follow a group of people who have already had to survive a similar deadly game and escaped with their lives.

Escape Room 2 Scares Up New, Earlier Than Expected Summer Release Date
Image
Escape Room 2 is coming to a movie theater near you much sooner than expected. Sony Pictures has opted to bump up the release of the upcoming horror sequel by a full six months. It will now arrive smack dab in the middle of July, putting it right in the heart of the summer movie season, something that was virtually nonexistent in 2020. But that looks to change this year and Sony is trying to get a possible hit on the books sooner rather than later.

Sony will now release Escape Room 2 in theaters on July 16. It was originally slated to hit theaters in August of last year. But theater closures and uncertainty at the box office prevented that from happening, as was the case with many movies from various studios in 2020. Sony had previously delayed the sequel to 2019's Escape Room until January 7, 2022, seemingly content to wait until the time was right.

Taraji P. Henson Making Feature Film Directorial Debut With Bron Studios’ ‘Two-Faced’
Image
Oscar nominated and Golden Globe winning actress Taraji P. Henson is making her feature directorial debut the Bron Studios’ drama Two-Faced in which she’ll also star.

Two-Faced, written by Cat Wilkins, follows Joy, a Black high school senior whose chances to attend the college of her dreams are threatened by her wildly popular and charismatic school principal, Jerald, after she confronts him with evidence of his racist past. With the help of her friends, Joy sets out to expose Jerald for who he truly is but quickly learns that he is not above waging all-out-war against the students trying to take him down. Henson will play Gina Robinson, Joy’s mother.

Wilkins recently graduated from the Mfa Screenwriting Program at UCLA. Her Two-Faced screenplay won first place in the feature comedy category at the 2020 UCLA Screenwriters Showcase. Henson and her Tph Entertainment will produce with Aaron L. Gilbert on behalf of Bron, Tim Story on behalf of The Story Company and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett. EPs are Wilkins, Christine Conley and Trent Hubbard.

Said Henson: “After two decades spent in front of the camera, I’m thrilled to finally jump behind it for my feature directorial debut! What first attracted me to this project was Joy – she is the character I needed to see in films growing up, but never had. It’s important that stories be told from a woman’s point of view and partnering with Bron Studios and the amazingly talented Tim Story – both who use their platforms to help elevate women and people of color – feels like the perfect match. I can’t wait to bring this hilariously heartfelt script by Cat Wilkins to life!”

Added Gilbert: “Taraji is an important voice in the world and Bron is thrilled to support her directorial debut, of a script from Cat Wilkins, that through its comedic elements examines race and culture in America. We also look forward to working with Taraji’s long-time collaborator Tim Story and the rest of the team behind the film.”

Said Story: “I could not be more excited to support one of the most talented people I have ever known. Taraji and I have done three movies together and I knew it was only a matter of time before she would make this leap to directing and I am honored to produce this film along with Bron Studios. Taraji is like family to me and I cannot wait for everyone to see her directorial vision of this hilarious script by Cat Wilkins brought to the screen.”

Bron Releasing and UTA Independent Film Group will oversee film sales and distribution.

Henson won a Golden Globe in 2016 in the Best Actress TV Series Drama category for her turn on Fox’s Empire. She was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars in 2009 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. She’s also a 2017 SAG Ensemble winner for the feature Hidden Figures. Henson directed the 2020 episode “Come Undone” of Empire. Her Executive Producer feature credits include No Good Deed, Proud Mary and What Men Want.

She is represented by M88, UTA, Ziffren Brittenham and The Lede Company. Wilkins is represented by UTA and Echo Lake Entertainment. Story and The Story Company are repped by UTA, Ziffren Brittenham and The Collins Jackson Agency.

In July, Henson’s production company Tph Entertainment signed a first-look deal with Twentieth Century Fox TV. The first project in development out of the gate is — you guessed it — a Cookie Lyon spinoff series. The agreement with Fox will also include other projects for multiple platforms.

The Will Packer Interview: Why the Billion-Dollar Producer Is Still Hollywood’s Greatest Underdog
Will Packer
Will Packer’s movies have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, with 10 films that opened at number one. However, “a lot of people think I just popped up with Will Packer Productions,” Packer said. “They don’t know about the grind years and years and years before that.”

Packer made his first film, “Chocolate City,” when he was an engineering undergrad at Florida A&m University in 1994. Scrappy indies led to direct-to-video “urban” features to low-budget genre titles like Beyonce’s fatal-attraction drama “Obsessed” (2009) and the Taraji P. Henson thriller “No Good Deed” (2014). The reviews were often unimpressive, but all were made for a price, all featured black casts, and all made money.

Today he leads his eponymous production company, with credits that include the “Ride Along” franchise as well as critically acclaimed titles like “Girls Trip,” “Straight Outta Compton,” and most recently “The Photograph” starring Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield.
