The heavens opened over London’s Leicester Square on Wednesday evening as “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” had its world premiere, with pouring rain drenching the media line and fans who waited for hours to glimpse the beloved cast. It was a quintessentially British franchise finale marked by quintessentially British weather, with the skies relenting only briefly for the ensemble to walk the red carpet before the storm returned — a suitably dramatic backdrop for the farewell to one of Britain’s most enduring screen sagas.
Outside the Odeon Luxe, producer Gareth Neame said the show’s global success came from its “expressly British” mix of class structure, family drama, comedy and romance. “I think first and foremost is hoping that the fans love this movie and feel it’s the final button on the whole thing,” he noted. While stressing there are “no real plans” for more, Neame acknowledged that...

“Sometimes I feel that the past is a more comfortable place than the future,” muses one of the characters in the presumably final Downton Abbey film. That sentiment probably rings very true for the devoted fans of the long-running franchise that has included six television seasons and three theatrical films. While societal change is very much afoot in this installment set in 1930, Downton aficionados will be relieved to learn that nearly all of the familiar characters return (save, of course, for the deceased ones, and even they show up in one form or another) for this swan song reprising the familiar themes, subtle humor and elegant dramatics.
It’s a new character, however, that gives Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale its comedic juice, and he’s a real-life one at that: Noel Coward (wonderfully played by Arty Froushan), who swoops in to provide the sort of barbed witticisms that Maggie Smith...

The title says it all.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is the end of the beloved tale of the Crawley family over several years, first as a limited and then regular TV drama series, and then as major motion pictures, with this the third and apparently last of them. Writer-producer Julian Fellowes has created such a memorable group of characters it is hard to finally say goodbye to them, but in this witty and wise finale it is nice to report it is a goodbye worth saying, with somehow each of the members of this massive ensemble cast getting their moment in the sunset. Even though the absence of the great late Maggie Smith as the inimitable Violet is felt, it really isn’t because she is often mentioned and there is a wonderful and touching dedication to her at the end. This is all about a changing of the guard at Downton Abbey,...

It would not be insulting or inaccurate to describe the trilogy of “Downton Abbey” features as the most expensive fan films ever made. While it is not uncommon for there to be theatrical releases inspired by recent hit shows, the “Downton Abbey” films are a direct continuation of Julian Fellowes’ acclaimed PBS drama, and largely conform to the same style. Beyond their expanded running time and more robust ensemble of guest stars, the “Downton Abbey” films are extended episodes of the show, and would be largely incomprehensible to those who aren’t familiar with the source material. “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” may not reach the psychological depths of its two predecessors,...

Heading into the summer, Hollywood was bullish that several promising blockbusters would be able to propel ticket sales above $4 billion for only the second time since the pandemic. But as the season winds to a close, it’s clear the domestic box office will fall short of that lofty benchmark.
Overall revenues from May 1 to Aug. 24 have reached $3.53 billion, according to Comscore. Popcorn season is typically the most profitable period for the movie business, with revenues regularly accounting for around 40% of the annual box office. But domestic ticket sales have only surpassed the $4 billion figure once since Covid lockdowns, during the glory days of “Barbenheimer” in 2023.
Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” is the highest-grossing film of the summer with $421 million in North America and $1.03 billion globally. It’s the only 2025 release from a Hollywood studio to cross $1 billion. Other bright spots were “Jurassic World Rebirth” with $844 million, “How to Train Your Dragon” with $626 million,...

Sony Crunchyroll’s anime title Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle hit three week tracking yesterday and the outlook for the Sept. 12 theatrical release stands between a solid $20M-$29M.
The news comes at a time as Sony Pictures Animation/Netflix’s Kpop Demon Hunters Singalong is expected to post a surprise $15M+ opening, potentially unseating New Line’s third weekend of Weapons for No. 1.
Unaided awareness and first choice are strong on Infinity Castle with men under 25. If the pic hits anything north of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train‘s $21.2M opening from 2021, it’s arguably a record start for an anime movie stateside.
We already told you that after tickets went on sale a week ago for Infinity Castle, the top three chains were already reaping around $10M in presales, which in Fandango’s books, is an anime movie advance tickets sales record.

Elizabeth McGovern doesn’t feel like Downton Abbey is missing one of its most iconic figures. The actress, who has played Cora Crawley since the show first premiered in 2010, recently reflected on filming Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale without her late costar, Dame Maggie Smith — and her perspective might surprise fans.
“She’s still very much in the atmosphere,” McGovern said in an interview, insisting that Smith’s presence continues to permeate the franchise even after her passing in September 2024. Smith’s Dowager Countess, Violet Crawley, died at the conclusion of 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era, which meant that the third (and reportedly final) film was already positioned to move on without her.
“I don’t feel there’s a big hole,” McGovern said. “In fact, in some ways, it sort of freed up the rest of the narrative to have a flow, because it’s not stopping for her moments.

Now that Season 3 of The Gilded Age is over, the time is ripe to start speculating about Season 4. There are several threads that need to be picked up when the HBO series returns, but there's one particular character whose future is giving off major Downton Abbey vibes. Gladys (Taissa Farmiga), is now the wife of Hector (Ben Lamb), the Duke of Buckingham. With the show now closer than ever to its British counterpart, we can't help but wonder: is a crossover in the works for Season 4?
The Gilded Age and Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes himself spoke about it during an interview with TV Line. The writer and showrunner addressed the timing and location of The Gilded Age, which would certainly make a crossover possible. However, this is as far as Fellowes is willing to go for now. He stated:
“Well, obviously there’s an opportunity to [stage a crossover], because they are both in England.

The writer and showrunner addressed the timing and location of The Gilded Age, which would certainly make a crossover possible. However, this is as far as Fellowes is willing to go for now. He stated:

Peacock is offering a place to stay for a Hostel series project from filmmaker Eli Roth and star Paul Giamatti.
The NBCUniversal streamer will develop the project, which is based on Roth’s mid-2000s horror movies about an underground network of wealthy people who kidnap and torture young tourists staying in hostels. The show, which THR reported was in the works in 2024 (but without a home), comes from Fifth Season.
Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Giamatti, an avowed horror fan, is set to star in the show, though details of his role are being kept under wraps. The Hostel series project is described as a present-day take on the concept.
Roth, who wrote and directed 2005’s Hostel and 2007’s Hostel: Part II, is set to write, direct and executive produce the Peacock project. The films’ producers, Mike Fleiss and Chris Briggs, are also EPs. (A third Hostel film, made without Roth’s involvement,...

Elizabeth McGovernis one of the finest actors to have graced the beloved television series turned box office blockbuster, Downton Abbey. As Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham, McGovern's strong yet utterly heartwarming presence wholly resonates with the mission statement of Julian Fellowes'period drama, and will do so one final time later this year in The Grand Finale, scheduled to premiere on September 12.
Ahead of the movie scheduled to be the last in the series, McGovern spoke to Deadline about her character's journey, her time as an actress, and, perhaps most intriguingly, what the future might look like for Downton Abbey. It is expected that the doors will close for good on the iconic countryside manor in The Grand Finale, but it will surely be all too tempting for higher-ups to find a way to turn Downton Abbey into its next money-spinning era. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale star Elizabeth McGovern has teased a way in which Julian Fellowes' ever-popular period drama franchise could continue. For 15 years, Downton Abbey has delighted, awed, and surprised us all, leaving behind a few broken hearts and plenty of love in its wake. Now, it seems the story of the Crawley family is finally coming to an end – or is it?
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is slated to be the third and final movie in the Downton Abbey franchise, as the Crawley family is thrust into the political and financial turmoil of the 1930s. It might not just be the audience saying goodbye to Downton, however; the Crawleys might just be forced to say a final farewell to the estate they've called home for generations, too.
Of course, in this age of remakes, reboots, and endless sequels, the question on everyone's minds is whether The Grand...

Exclusive: Elizabeth McGovern is fired up when she talks about sensuous silver screen goddess Ava Gardner, whom the Downton Abbey star portrays in a stage show that hits New York next week. Gardner, she argues, endured the “objectification of the female body, which is the basis of the entire movie business.”
Being a movie star in the 1940s, 1950s and into the ’60s took its toll on Gardner, who escaped her mink-lined cage in California to spend her final years in England residing in a grand apartment close to Harrods’ department store.
Ava: The Secret Conversations, beginning at New York’s City Center on July 29, is based on a series of tapes the writer Peter Evans recorded with the one-time screen siren in London over a four-year period beginning in 1988 which he then had published in 2013, more than two decades after Gardner’s death in 1990.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I cry and get emotional over fictional characters and their stories. So, with that being said, I can openly admit that the Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale trailer made me emotional. But not just because it’s the last ride with the Crawley family. It’s because I really miss Maggie Smith. Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, wasn’t just a character—she was Downton.
With her sharp tongue, clever comebacks, and that regal stare, Maggie Smith brought a kind of magic to every single scene she was in. But now, she’s no longer with us, and that makes it hard for me to watch Downton Abbey’s final chapter. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still excited for the last installment, because Lady Mary is giving chaos, drama, and elegance. But much like the Earl of Grantham, even I found myself asking,...
