Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai, starring Running Point’s Brenda Song as Princess Akemi, will return for Season 2 in 2026. The critically acclaimed animated series holds a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and follows Akemi, a princess in Edo-era Japan, whose path crosses with Mizu, a mixed-race woman disguised as a man on a mission to find and kill the four white men who could be her father.

Executive producer Michael Green told The Direct that more than half of the scripts for Season 2 are finished, with production already underway. The gap between seasons is due to the show’s animation, which contributed to Season 1 earning multiple Emmy Awards. Season 2 will continue the series’ striking visuals, strong storytelling, and Brenda Song’s performance as Akemi.

Annecy — In what looks like one of the biggest announcements at this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, Disney Branded Television has greenlit a new animated series for preschoolers, “Disney Junior’s Ariel,” inspired by the hugely popular story of “The Little Mermaid.”

The announcement is set to be made today by Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, during the Annecy Animation Festival, at a new project and sneak peak picked presentation across the upcoming slate of Disney Branded Television and Disney Emea titles.

The new series follows a young Ariel and features fan-favorite characters, including King Triton, Ursula, Sebastian and Flounder, as well as exciting new additions. “Disney Junior’s Ariel” is set to debut on Disney platforms worldwide in 2024.

Set in the fantastical Caribbean-inspired underwater kingdom of Atlantica, the series turns on Ariel and her fun-filled, action-packed mermaid adventures with her friends.

Mira, Royal Detective – Disney Junior

Bollywood music and dance will be celebrated in the acclaimed animated series Mira, Royal Detective. In four extended-length specials that will begin airing May 2nd and culminating June 20th on Disney Junior, will not only showcases Bollywood but with higher stakes mystery and adventure. The series is also available on Disney+.

Since its premiere in March 2020 and for more than 100 stories, Mira, Royal Detective has highlighted the rich, diverse cultures of India. Each episode centers on the clever heroine Mira and her friends, including her sleuthing mongoose sidekicks Mikku and Chikku, as they help others by solving mysteries in their kingdom community of Jalpur. Latoya Raveneau, director of “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,” has entered an overall deal at Disney to develop and produce animated projects with Disney Television Animation and 20th Television Animation. The deal also includes terms for live-action content development.

Through the new agreement, Raveneau is now developing a pilot at Disney Television Animation under the leadership of Meredith Roberts, the studio’s senior vice president and general manager. Raveneau will also work under Marci Proietto, the executive vice president of 20th Television Animation.

“Latoya is a rare and uniquely talented person who elevates everything she touches, and her creative sensibilities span stories for preschool, kids, families and adults, said Roberts. “She’s one of the most natural, talented storytellers I have ever encountered, and we are proud to be supporting her vision.”

Production has begun on “Mira, Royal Detective,” an animated mystery-adventure series for preschoolers slated to debut on Disney Junior channels and programming blocks around the world in 2020. Set in the magical Indian-inspired land of Jalpur, the series follows the brave and resourceful Mira, a commoner who is appointed to the role of royal detective after solving a mystery that involves saving the kingdom’s young prince. The role of Mira will be voiced by 15-year-old newcomer Leela Ladnier. The announcement was made today by Joe D’Ambrosia, senior vice president, Original Programming, Disney Junior.

November is approaching fast, and though we definitely know there’s something happening that month we’re supposed to remember, we have no idea what it is. It’s some kind of important civic duty we’re supposed to participate in within the first eight days or so, but that doesn’t help much. Oh well, hopefully the new offerings from Hulu will remind us of what it is or keep us distracted long enough that we don’t feel bad about missing it.
