Disney’s 11 Year Old Masterpiece Is Ripe for Live-Action Remake After Lilo & Stitch Success
Image
Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake emerged as a major box office hit, and its success means that 2014’s Big Hero Six could be perfect for the studio’s next live-action adaptation. Following the success of the 2025 movie, Disney must be looking for another beloved animated IP to remake, and the 11-year-old masterpiece could be a strong choice.

Lilo & Stitch grossed $1.032 billion globally (via The Numbers), proving that Disney’s formula of turning popular animated movies into live-action blockbusters had not gone stale. As a result, Big Hero 6 would be the perfect choice for a live-action remake, and here’s how it can shake up Disney’s formula...

Elevate Management Rebrands As Elev8on, Signs Jamie Chung & Creates AI Tool That Assesses American Talent’s Chances In Europe
Image
Exclusive: France’s Elevate Management is making some serious moves as the Venice Film Festival gets underway today.

The Paris-based company is rebranding as Elev8on Management and has signed Lovecraft Country and Dexter: New Blood actress Jamie Chung for European representation at the same time. Perhaps most intriguingly, though, it has also launched an AI-powered talent assessment tool that will look to redefine how American talent is likely to fare in Europe.

The rebrand to Elev8on is a “transformation towards sharper, more global and visionary positioning at the intersection of talent management, packaging, and strategic innovation,” according to company CEO Florence Lamy and President Daniel Blanc. They told us the ‘8’ stands for “continuous growth, the transatlantic bridge we operate on, and the infinite potential of the talents we represent.”

Chung, meanwhile, has joined Elev8on’s roster, which represents the likes of Megan Fox,...

Alan Tudyk confirms he won’t be voicing this popular character in Disney’s live-action ‘Moana’
Image
Here's some fowl news: Disney's beloved Moana franchise is making the leap from animation to live action next year, but Alan Tudyk won't be coming along for the ride. The actor and Mouse House voiceover star provided the clucks and crows for the title character's trusty rooster sidekick Heihei in the Oscar-nominated 2016 original and its box-office-record-breaking 2024 sequel. But the feathery baton will pass to another performer in the live-action Moana, due in theaters on July 10, 2026.

"Heihei will be played by someone else," Tudyk confirms to Gold Derby during a conversation about his Emmy-nominated voiceover role in the Disney+ series Andor. The actor adds that the "someone else" will be a female performer whose casting has yet to be revealed. "Everybody calls Heihei a chicken, even though he's a rooster," Tudyk jokes. "So it's about time they got an actress to put a little more 'chick' in the chicken."

The live-action...

Zootopia 2 Trailer Puts the Buddy Cop Duo in Counselling

The trailer starts with Quinta Brunson’s Dr. Fuzzby welcoming Judy and Nick, who don’t seem to be the best of partners. While the two did become police partners by the time the first movie concluded, from the trailer,...

Will Smith’s Sci-Fi Action Film With a 57% Rotten Tomatoes Score Will Upload Its Way to Streaming Next Month
Image
Will Smithhas starred in plenty of science-fiction movies throughout his career, and one of them will find a new streaming home next month. The 2004 feature I, Robot will make its way to Hulu in July. I, Robot was generally well-received by fans and even got a handful of awards recognition, including an Academy Award nomination.

Based on the 1950s book of the same name by Isaac Asimov, I, Robot stars Smith as Del Spooner, a Chicago detective biased against robots; he suffers from survivor's guilt because the robot who rescued him didn't rescue a young girl in an accident. This movie takes place in the year 2035, in a world where humanoid robots serve humanity, but that changes following the murder of Dr. Alfred Lanning. Spooner suspects that a robot is behind the crime, but he eventually finds out that the case is tied to a bigger conspiracy.

‘Heartwarming’ yet ‘bloated’: Film critics are mixed on ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ live-action remake
Image
Film critics are mixed on the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, which hits theaters on Friday. This retelling of the 2010 animated hit has an 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 67 score on Metacritic, with reviews singling out its "heartwarming" story, while also accusing it of too much "bloating" with a runtime 27 minutes longer than its predecessor.

Dean DeBlois returns to direct and write this fourth film in the franchise, following the animated installments released in 2010, 2014, and 2019. The movies are based on the book series of the same name by Cressida Cowell. In the live-action version, Mason Thames stars as Hiccup, a young boy who defies centuries of traditional dragon-fighting rules when he befriends a Night Fury named Toothless. Gerard Butler reprises his role as Stoick, Hiccup's father, from the first three movies.

Brian Truitt (USA Today) raves about the project, "Fortunately, the new How to Train Your Dragon does no harm.

The Perfect Wall-e Replacement Is Dominating Netflix After $334 Million Box Office Run In 2024
Image
Wall-Enever got a sequel, but another charming animated movie with a robot protagonist is currently dominating Netflix. Wall-e is one of the best Pixar movies, and it perfectly captures the studio's ability to create deep emotional connections between its audience and its characters, even if those characters are toys, monsters or, in this case, robots. With an impressive visual scope, Wall-e pushes the boundaries of animation to new heights, which is part of the reason why it's still regarded as a masterpiece of animated cinema.

Even before Wall-e, there were plenty of great animated movies with robot characters. The Iron Giant, Big Hero 6 and other movies often use robots to provide an outsider's perspective on human society. In Wall-e's case, it takes a trash-compacting robot to reconnect humanity with the Earth, in more ways than one. Robots tend to work well in animated movies because they offer the...

Walt Disney Animation Studios World Premieres Whimsy & Wonder Exhibition at 20th Animayo Gran Canaria Festival (Exclusive)
Image
Walt Disney Animation Studios is paying tribute to female talent in art and animation at a one-of-a-kind exhibition during the Gran Canaria-based Animayo. From May 7-10, the exhibition Whimsy & Wonder will be exclusively on display during the fest.

Disney, an official sponsor this year, will celebrate the female artists who helped shape Disney’s visual storytelling for more than a hundred years. These include the trailblazing Mary Blair, who transformed the use of color in the 1950s, and the visionary women behind modern favorites like “Frozen,” “Encanto” and “Moana 2.” The exhibition is a homage to the women who have shaped the past—and are defining the future—of animation.

In the 1940s and ’50s, Blair, a celebrated color stylist and art director, brought a bold new vision to Disney animation. Her imaginative use of vibrant colors and whimsical shapes sparked a transformative shift...

Inside the Unlikely Return of the Animated Short Film | Analysis
Image
When Netflix released its “engagement report,” a chart that details the streaming giant’s top performing content from July to December 2024, on the film list, just past word-of-mouth sensations like “Carry-On” and “Rebel Ridge” and a couple of spots below heavily hyped sequel “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” the sixth most-watched thing on Netflix was “Sing: Thriller,” a short film set in Illumination’s “Sing” universe that features Michael Jackson’s beloved smash. This 10-minute “Sing” short performed better than animated features like DreamWorks’ “Trolls Band Together” and Netflix’s own original animated movies “That Christmas” and “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” a “SpongeBob SquarePants” project licensed from Paramount. “Sing: Thriller” racked up a staggering 77,000,000 views.

The short, which features an odd ooze turning the animal denizens of the “Sing” universe into zombie-like creatures, captures the colorful, brightly choreographed charm of the “Sing” movies and distills that charm into an easily digestible,...

5 Best Oscar-Nominated Anime Movies, Ranked
Image
The 2025 Academy Awards have come and gone, and the anime community once more finds itself disappointed with no nominations within the field. The Oscars have had a long history of overlooking anime, but to be snubbed for another year—especially when Kiyotaka Oshiyama’s Look Back was more than eligible for the running—had anime fans everywhere shaking their heads.

Previous anime productions have snagged an Oscar in the past, however. Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away became the first anime feature to win an Academy Award in 2001, followed by The Boy and The Heron in 2024. In recent years, other Studio Ghibli productions and anime films have also contended for the entertainment industry's most coveted award, with some close to winning.

T.J. Miller at an event for El oso Yogi (2010)
T.J. Miller has signed on to star in the upcoming independent techno-thriller A.I. Heart U, written and directed by Jason Cook. The film, which explores artificial intelligence and its impact on human relationships, features an ensemble cast that includes Zach Gilford, Heather Morris, Kayla Compton, and Jonathan Kite.

Miller will portray Marco, an eccentric AI tech partner, in what the filmmaker describes as a cautionary tale about artificial intelligence. “This is a cautionary tale about AI, but framing it as a tool, not an inherent evil. This is a story about a bad guy enabled by AI, kinda like Faust,” Cook said.

The project is being produced by Cook alongside Trent Garret under their newly formed Blue Collar Productions. A.I. Heart U is the first of four planned films in a fully funded slate from the company. The production has been underway in Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon.

Disney+ 'Tiana' Series Canceled as Animation Studio Moves Away From Streaming Content
Image
Despite announcing plans for a Princess and the Frog series, titled Tiana, back in 2020, Disney has pulled the plug on the animated follow-up. In addition, Walt Disney Animation is scrapping all development plans for content on Disney+. Walt Disney Animation joins Pixar Animation, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm as divisions of the Walt Disney Company that are focusing less on streaming projects and reinvesting their energy in theatrical films, a far cry from where the studio was just five years ago.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that plans for Tiana have now been scrapped entirely, along with a planned feature-length film for Disney+ which had not been announced. A spokesperson for Disney confirmed there would be some layoffs in its Vancouver studio due to this shift from developing original content for Disney+ to focusing on feature film animation. Sources close to Tiana told The Hollywood Reporter that despite their best efforts to save the series,...

‘Tiana’ Disney+ Series Shelved as Walt Disney Animation Abandons Longform Streaming Content (Exclusive)
Image
Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially pulled the plug on its Tiana princess series as it abandons making original longform content for streaming, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

A spokesperson confirmed there will be some layoffs in its Vancouver studio as a result of this shift in business strategy. In addition to the Tiana series, the studio is also scrapping an unannounced feature-length project that was set to go straight to Disney+.

Tiana was first announced in December 2020, and was envisioned as a musical featuring Anika Noni Rose reprising her role as Tiana from the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog, the film centering on Disney’s first Black princess.

Sources close to the streaming series say that despite best efforts, including several changes to the creative team, Tiana ultimately could not get to where it needed to be given production costs.

Still, The Princess and the Frog remains a key property for the company,...

13 Times Oscars Got It Horribly Wrong Including That Time When Austin Butler Lost Best Actor to Brendan Fraser
Image
The Oscars are coming up on March 3, and while Hollywood is buzzing with predictions, let’s take a moment to address the elephant in the Dolby Theatre, the Academy doesn’t always get it right. In fact, sometimes they get it so spectacularly wrong that fans are left questioning reality.

Remember when Austin Butler lost Best Actor to Brendan Fraser? Nothing against Fraser, but Butler became Elvis, and yet, the Academy said, “Nope, let’s give it to the guy in a fat suit.”

And don’t even get us started on Crash winning Best Picture over Brokeback Mountain, a decision so controversial that even Academy voters have admitted they messed up.

Roberto Benigni in Life Is Beautiful and Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain (Credits- Miramax and Paramount)

It’s not just about bad choices; it’s about the politics, the campaigning, and sometimes, just plain old favoritism.

Every Oscar Winner For Best Animated Feature, Ranked
Image
The Academy Awards have been honoring animation since 1932 when Walt Disney began a near decade-long reign over the then-newly minted best cartoon short subject category. However, in 2001, the ceremony inaugurated the best animated feature category, beginning a now-storied tradition that has helped the medium skyrocket in popularity and prestige. Sure, some folks still sideline it as children's entertainment -- including at the ceremony itself -- but so long as based god Guillermo Del Toro proclaims it as cinema, animation will live on as such.

Thanks to the category's relative infancy, not to mention its smaller pool of competitors, the majority of the now over 100 nominees are some of the best the medium has to offer. However, not every winner is a winner, if you know what we mean. Here is our definitive ranking of every best animated feature at the Oscars, from the times the Academy got it wrong to...

The DreamWorks toon came in with 10 nominations across nine categories, and it won all of them: Best Feature, Best FX, Best Character Animation, Best Character Design, Best Direction, Best Music, Best Production Design, Best Voice Acting (Lupita Nyong’o), and Best Editorial.

The Annies win capped a momentous weekend for The Wild Robot, which also took the animated feature prizes at the Producers Guild of America Awards and Critics Choice Awards, cementing its position as the favorite going into the Academy Awards on March 2.

The film’s chief rival for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, Flow, also had a successful day, taking Best Feature — Independent and Best Writing, two races where it didn’t have to face The Wild Robot.

But do the Annie results make The Wild Robot unbeatable for the Oscar? Not necessarily. The link between...

“I’ve been telling everybody I started out in the hand-drawn days when I poured my heart and soul into a sequence when Beast turned back into a man when three words broke a spell locked in a rose,” Sanders reminisced about...

Rumor: Two Groups Of Characters Marvel Studios Is Considering For Upcoming Animated Movie Have Been Revealed
Image
When Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009 for a massive $4 billion, fans immediately started speculating about the possibility of Marvel Studios teaming up with Pixar for an animated movie.

That hasn't happened, and the closest we've come to a crossover like that is Disney Animation's very loose adaptation of Big Hero 6. However, with Marvel Animation releasing various TV shows on Disney+, we've been hearing rumblings about a big screen animated movie from Marvel Studios for a while now.

Today, scooper Daniel Richtman brings word that Power Pack and Kid Kaiju are among the characters Kevin Feige is looking to put front and centre in this long-rumoured animated feature.

For those of you who aren't aware, Power Pack is a superhero team composed of four siblings: Alex, Julie, Jack, and Katie Power. The children gain superpowers after encountering an alien named Whitey, a Kymellian scientist who transferred one of his four...

The Animated Sequel I've Wanted For 11 Years Should Finally Happen After Disney's 2024 Success
Image
Disney's success in 2024 has been monumental when it comes to animated films, and I can't help but feel like they may finally revisit one of their best films after a decade has already passed by. Disney has always had a presence in the animation space. Evidently, that is where they started, and while the initial growth was slow and steady, recent decades have seen the company advance from being a notable presence, to pretty much dominating the market.

With entire franchises like the MCU, Star Wars, and plenty of other IPs under their belt, there are plenty of projects to keep the Disney cash flowing. But 2024 in particular saw their animated features racking up some impressive figures. And with both of the biggest hits, it was a sequel to a property that Disney launched years earlier.

We’re Grateful for One Disney Masterpiece Escaping the Worst Hollywood Trend That Ruined The Lion King
Image
Disney has been on a roll of remaking their older classics. Be it Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast, The Little Mermaid, Rapunzel, The Jungle Book, or most famously The Lion King. With multiple prequels, sequels, live-action, and different animated versions, The Lion King has become one of Disney’s most profitable franchises.

So, it is no wonder that they keep reprising the same content over and over. However, for many, multiple variations of the same story time and again has completely dissolved whatever charm the movie held initially.

However, there is one Disney movie that touched the hearts of fans across the globe yet somehow managed to skip this trend for the most part. That is, Big Hero 6, and the fans couldn’t be happier about it.

Disney’s Lion King franchise got ruined because of the studio...

15 Most Powerful Animated Disney Characters, Ranked
Image
Disney's animated canon includes all manner of characters. There are many ordinary everyday humans and animals that stand alongside far more fantastical beings. Some Disney films even go as far as to include gods or demigods of immense power. Part of what makes Disney movies so enduring is their ability to humanize even the most inhuman of characters.

Few films involve these powerful beings going up against one another so that a direct comparison can be difficult. The abilities of Disney characters span a wide variety, and the meaning of what can be considered powerful is hard to quantify. Nevertheless, some characters display feats of power that others can't match, allowing them to stand out.

Updated on January 12, 2025 by Lauren Younkin: Given Disney's extensive catalog covering a wide range of stories across cultures, there is no shortage of powerful characters in their films. As such, this list has been updated...

‘Big Hero 6’ Producer Reveals the Key to a Sequel: “We’ll see what happens”
Image
‘Big Hero 6’ was the first Marvel Comics animated theatrical release. It was a highly successful release thanks to an engaging mix of action, humor, and heart. Audiences loved the lovable character Baymax, who brought warmth and compassion to the film. The animation, fast pace, and emotional depth made it enjoyable for both kids and adults, earning it strong reviews and a high approval rating.

The movie was released more than 10 years ago and although a sequel was discussed a lot of times the movie is still a single release. After all, why shouldn’t the movie get a sequel, it was a great origin story.

Co-director Chris Williams said that a great movie starts with a great story. He believes the crew and the audience, who love Disney animation, both deserve a good story and that was one of the necessary things for the sequel – an equally good story as the first installment.

Big Hero 6 Producer Reveals The One Condition For A Sequel Getting Made
Image
Big Hero 6 producer Roy Conli has revealed what it will take for a sequel to happen. Loosely based on the Marvel superhero of the same name, Disney’s 2014 animated adaptation proved a box office boon for the studio, bringing in over $657 million in worldwide box office. Not only would the movie go on to spawn two spinoff television shows, 2017’s Big Hero 6: The Series and 2022’s Baymax!, but it would also inspire a manga adaptation and multiple video games.

Ahead of Disneynature’s upcoming documentary movie Tiger, Screen Rant spoke with Conli and asked whether there were any plans for another big screen follow-up to his 2014 animated hit. While no plans for a Big Hero Six sequel exist, Conli revealed that he “always secretly urge[s]” original co-director Don Hall to return to the property. However, he suggested any such move would rely on Hall’s involvement, given he...

Will Marvel Ever Release an Animated Theatrical Movie? Maybe, Says Boss
Image
Marvel Animation isn't ruling out a feature film, according to Brad Winderbaum — but it needs to be the right project. Following the critical success of X-Men '97, Marvel Animation has become one of Marvel's most vital assets, and a newer sub-division of the larger Marvel Studios universe, starting with the acclaimed animated series, What If...?. Marvel Animation is going strong in 2025, as they will release three different shows during the year: Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Eyes of Wakanda, and Marvel Zombies. While Marvel Animation is investing heavily in animated series for Disney+, they have yet to dip their toes into a feature film, but it isn't off the table.

Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios' Head of streaming, television, and animation, spoke to Geekcentric (via ComingSoon.net) about the potential for a Marvel Studios-produced animated film, and he had a lot to say. "We talk about it. I think it's just about...

Fans Think 'Big Hero 6' Ripped Off 'How To Train Your Dragon'
Image
With '80s classics Gremlins and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and more modern flicks like The Iron Giant and Underdog, the ever-heartwarming "a boy and his [insert unlikely companion]" premise has become a story told and retold across generations and genres. Whether the sidekick is a dog, robot, alien, or any magical creature, audiences and critics alike adore each iteration (and their lead's unique companions), regardless of the familiar plot structure.

However, as studios produce more and more of these formulaically touching films and, as a result, run out of new ways to tell the story, it isn't surprising when viewers start to notice (and complain about) it. Fan suspicions about the similarities between the characters and their journeys in Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon franchise and Disney's Big Hero 6 reveal the studios' lack of fresh ideas and the beginning of viewer disinterest. So, is that long-time adoration turning into boredom?...

2024’s Batman Beyond Fan Movie Already Brought Us A Perfect Dcu’s Casting I Didn't Know I Needed
Image
2024's Batman Beyond fan movie has provided a perfect Dcu casting I didn't know I needed. Inspired by the classic animated Batman Beyond series that ran for three seasons between 1999-2001, Lumis Entertainment has created a short film imagining what a live-action movie could look like starring DC's Terry McGinnis as The Dark Knight of the future in Neo Gotham However, the actor chosen to play Terry couldn't be better and deserves to be Batman Beyond one day in an official project from DC Studios and Warner Bros.

Lumis Entertainment's Batman Beyond: Year One is written and directed by Michael Yu. In the short film, Terry McGinnis balances meeting someone new with his secret life as Batman protecting New Gotham and receiving guidance from his mentor Bruce Wayne. To that end, this younger Batman of the future is played by Ryan Potter, whom I now absolutely want to see...

Moana 2's Villain Subverts A Modern Disney Animation Trend
Image
The following contains spoilers for Moana 2, now playing in theatersMoana 2's villain twist is a surprisingly subversive approach to a modern Disney animation trend. Moana 2 is the latest entry to the Walt Disney Animated canon, expanding the adventures of the titular hero and challenging her with a mission to break a godly curse on the ocean. Standing in her way are two of Moana 2's most dangerous characters, the god Nalo and his servant Matangi.

However, the movie features an unexpected twist surrounding Matangi and her actual role in the narrative. This gives the character a subversive aspect compared to other recent animated Disney villains, while also carrying along a trend that's been consistent across over a decade of the franchise. It also sets the stage for Matangi to play a more interesting role in any potential Moana 3.

8 Tropes Modern Disney Movies Keep Repeating Over & Over
Image
Some of Disney's modern films have used the same trope over and over again. The iconic studio has been churning out animated classics for over a century now, with new ones coming out every year. From Disney's timeless classics like Peter Pan and Cinderella to modern hits like Frozen and Moana, Disney movies have covered a vast assortment of topics and stories as they continue to entertain their audiences.

However, in recent years, it does feel as though the studio has become a bit more repetitive in its storytelling. It has become noticeable that several tropes seem to appear in just about every movie Disney has produced in the last decade or two. While these elements are likely included because they generally appeal to audiences, they can certainly cause the films to feel redundant if used too frequently. Whether viewers like them or not, these common tropes have come to...
