Canada lands at Cannes with a mission to shift the conversation — on the Croisette, at least — from the havoc U.S. tariffs could wreak on the global film industry to the benefits of creative collaboration and co-production with Canadian talent and companies.
As recent successes (Matt Johnson’s SXSW Midnighter audience-award winner “Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie”) and this year’s festival and market titles reveal, Canadian filmmakers are twisting horror and comedy into new shapes and reinforcing the country’s historic strongholds of animation and documentary with new ideas. Over the past decade, holistic, regionally focused companies have been springing up and producing auteur films that are redefining what Canadian cinema is. Indigenous Canadian films, creators and companies are a catalyst in this gradual paradigm shift and have become a regular active presence at major festivals and markets.

On Call not only thrives on realism with its grounded portrayal of police procedures but also on the strength of its strong cast of characters. Reminiscent of gripping cop dramas like David Ayer's End of Watch, Prime Video's On Call has been created by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf. The two showrunners put their experience working on legal thriller shows, like Chicago P.D. and Law & Order: Criminal Justice System, on full display by diving deep into the day-to-day snags and challenges faced by two police officers, Traci Harmon and Alex Diaz.
While following a relatively linear storyline, the Dick Wolf police procedural series unfolds at a quick pace by restricting its episodic runtime to around 30 minutes. Although the series sticks to many conventions of the genre, its performances and compelling side-story beats are enough to keep viewers hooked throughout its runtime. Since On Call's cast members play a...

Based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula as well as an Irish legend, the upcoming vampire movie Feed has begun production ahead of the American Film Market next week, Deadline reports.
From director Marco van Belle (Mercy), the upcoming vampire movie Feed is being shot in Ireland. Fitting, given that the film is inspired by the Irish myth of the Dearg Due.
According to Wikipedia (linked above), “Dearg-due, an Irish name meaning ‘red bloodsucker,’ is a female demon that seduces men and then drains them of their blood.”
“The film follows a group of twenty something social media influencers who spend a weekend at a remote contemporary house in an Irish forest, and must fight for their lives when they awaken the world’s original vampire from her slumber.”
Grace Collender (Fréwaka) stars alongside Clinton Liberty, Daisy Jelley, Niamh Hogan, Rhys Mannion and Oskar Smith.

Mick Mars’ exit from Mötley Crüe and retirement from touring was unceremonious and contentious, resulting in legal drama and a highly publicized back-and-forth spat between the guitarist and his former bandmates.
But it would all be water under the bridge — for Mars at least — if the Crüe still wanted to write songs with their longtime axeman.
In a new interview, Mars was surprisingly forthcoming about the hypothetical opportunity to work with his old band in a creative capacity again.
“Well, it took me 40 years ’cause Mötley was priority… and now that I’m retired, I’m just me,” Mars told Audacy Check In when asked why it took him four decades to make his first solo album. “I mean, if Mötley wanted me to write songs with them again, of course I would… But right now, I’m just me, so I’m writing, and it’s not Mötley, and...

After the massive success of Oppenheimer in 2023, 2024 looks to be a year for the books once again for Florence Pugh. The talented British star will be seen in in the highly anticipated sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s impressive Dune. Pugh will join Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya in the 2nd installment in which she will play one of the iconic characters from the Dune novels, Princess Irulan.
Florence Pugh in Oppenheimer
Ahead of the film’s release in March, the Little Women star sat down for an informal chat with co-star Austin Butler who will play the antagonist in Dune 2. Among the many aspects of the film that they discussed, Pugh elaborated on the absence of Princess Irulan’s prominent face mask and explained the challenges it posed during filming which finally led to Villeneuve scrapping the accessory altogether.

“Everything I drop is a banger,” Kim Petras declares on “Uhoh,” a filter house-influenced track from her long-awaited debut studio album, Feed the Beast. And, for the most part, she delivers on that promise. From the verse to the pre-chorus to the instrumental drop and chopped-up vocal bridge, the song—which was produced by Ian Kirkpatrick, the knob-twirler behind Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now”—is stacked with hooks.
Much of the rest of Feed the Beast follows suit, including the Dr. Luke-helmed “Revelations,” which channels ’80s post-disco, complete with squelchy electric guitar solo, and the breezy “Coconuts,” a cheeky, pun-filled ode to Petras’s “margari-tatas.” Elsewhere, lead single “Alone” is built around a sample of Alice Deejay’s infectious “Better Off Alone,” though it leans too heavily on that late-’90s club hit’s synth hook to make much of a distinct impression of its own.

Pretty Little Liars helped propel many young actors to fame, who have gone on to star on other popular TV shows or explore their film careers. Several main characters were also played by stars with notable roles on their resumes already. From every character who played A on Pretty Little Liars to those wondering who is stalking teenagers in this otherwise perfect small town,...

TrustNordisk has snapped up international sales rights to the new Danish crime thriller “Boundless,” based on fiction guru Jussi Adler-Olsen’s “Den Grænseløse,” his sixth novel in the Department Q series.
Danish helmer Ole Christian Madsen, credited for the HBO series “Banshee” (2013-16) and WWII drama “Flame & Citron” starring Mads Mikkelsen, has taken up the challenge of bringing Adler-Olsen’s suspenseful universe to the silver screens, working from a script by Jakob Weis.
Christian Madsen will reunite with his “Banshee” actor Ulrich Thomsen. The latter reprises the role of detective Carl Mørck, which he played in Nordisk Film Production’s previous Department Q film version, “The Marco Effect”.
The helmer said he has “a profound respect for the world built in Adler-Olsen’s novels, that he finds both “intriguing and fascinating.” “I do believe ‘Boundless’ the movie could expand that world even more,” he asserted.

Erik Poppe’s historical drama “The Emigrants” scored the top Andreas Award at the 50th Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund. Produced by Fredrik Wikström Nicastro, it is distributed by Sf Studios. Poppe is also known for “Utøya: July 22” and “The King’s Choice.”
Based on Vilhelm Moberg’s series of novels about Swedes who decided to leave their country and search for a better future, it “tackles deep questions about cultural and religious identity,” argued the jurors.
“Even though the events in this story are long behind us, the film reminds us of our own present,” they added.
Interestingly enough, in 1971 Jan Troell also took on the story, ending up with four Academy Awards nominations – including one for Liv Ullmann.
“She was able to see our film and she is its biggest ambassador now. She just loves this take and noticed that it’s about the refugees today. It takes place 150 years ago,...
