Sarah Michelle Gellar shares ‘Buffy’ reboot hopes: ‘My dream is to bring back everyone who has died’
Image
Sarah Michelle Gellar is offering fresh insight into the long-developing Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. In a new interview with Vanity Fair Italia, the actress shared new details about the upcoming Hulu series and what finally convinced her to reprise the iconic role more than two decades after the original show ended.

“For so many years, I said no to a possible return of the series,” said Gellar, who received a Golden Globe nomination for Buffy but never had an Emmy bid. “I didn’t want to reintroduce something we had already seen. I waited for the right time to come. Then Chloé [Zhao], a big Buffy fan, proposed the project to me, and I accepted.”

The reboot has been in development quietly for several years. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman will be the showrunners and Zhao will direct the pilot and executive produce alongside Gellar, original series producers Fran and Kaz Kuzui,...

Sarah Michelle Gellar Teases ‘Buffy’ Reboot: “My Dream Is To Bring Back Everyone Who Died”
Image
Sarah Michelle Gellar is sharing her thoughts and a few details about the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, which is in the works at Hulu.

“It will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original,” Gellar told Vanity Fair in an interview at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival. “We will try to find a balance between new and old characters. My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.”

Gellar, who led the original series from 1997 to 2003, is returning to reprise her signature role as Buffy Summers. Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, a self-professed lifelong Buffy fan, directs the pilot, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face).

Gellar said she’s “very lucky” she “didn’t feel the pressure that today’s actors feel” with social media during her time on Buffy, and wants...

Sarah Michelle Gellar at an event for 2012 Golden Globe Awards (2012)
New Buffy Slayer Cast Amid Legacy Cameos in Auditions
Sarah Michelle Gellar at an event for 2012 Golden Globe Awards (2012)
Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed during a recent press appearance that the children of several original Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars quietly auditioned for the upcoming reboot, illustrating how the new series is intertwining its storied past with next-generation talent. While Gellar has been both a vocal supporter and an executive producer on the project, she admitted she was taken aback by how many “familiar faces” turned up at casting calls.

According to Gellar, “I know a few people from the show whose children came in” to read for parts, though she did not specify which actors’ offspring applied. This revelation follows discussions among casting directors about the value of legacy ties in reboots: some see it as a respectful nod to original contributors, while others warn it can blur professional boundaries and raise concerns over fairness.

Hulu greenlit the pilot, with Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao at the helm and sisters...

Ryan Kiera Armstrong Joins Buffy Revival as Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Toxic On-Set Past Resurfaces
Image
Ryan Kiera Armstrong is reportedly all ready to take up the mantle from Sarah Michelle Gellar in the upcoming Buffy reboot. Gellar portrayed the titular character in the 1997 show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Her performance not only charmed the audience but also went on to make a lasting impression on popular culture.

As such, news of the iconic show’s revival had millions of fans on edge. This new announcement about Ryan Kiera Armstrong joining Gellar as a castmate has only brought more joy to the fans. There is, however, one concern that has been hounding people who have been following Gellar and her show for years.

That is, the inherently toxic environment she spoke of pervaded the set of the 1997 series. Hence, many people are wondering if, much like the show, the toxicity, too, would make a comeback in the future.

Sarah Michelle Gellar claimed that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer...

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot just got a really exciting update
Image
Buffy Summers might be returning to our television screens in the near future and the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot just got a big update.

In addition to Sarah Michelle Gellar joining the cast to reprise her role as Buffy Summers, the project has landed its first new slayer in actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong (via Deadline). Horror fans might recognize her from the 2022 Firestarter remake or from the tenth season of American Horror Story.

According to the outlet, the 15-year-old actor has been cast "as an introverted high-school student" in the latest Buffyverse project. Since she is also allegedly a slayer, we can assume she might be something of an outcast at school and then find her purpose when she's selected as the next generation's slayer. Buffy is likely to act as a mentor for her.

But keep in mind that, currently, the reboot is only in the pilot stage.

Buffy reboot finds its Chosen One (and revealed all in a heartwarming announcement)
Image
The hunt for the new Chosen One is over, as the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot has found its chosen one. Sarah Michelle Gellar took to a video call to share the great news with the Canadian actress, and it led to a tearful (in a good way!) acceptance.

Ryan Kiera Armstrong will take on the role of the new slayer in the Buffy reboot. She will work along side Gellar, who is returning as Buffy from the original series. There isn’t a reboot without her, and this series was not going to happen without her blessing. Gellar has shared that she wasn’t open to a reboot unless it was done correctly, and now the right people have come together with the right idea!

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy, la cazavampiros (1997)
Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Firestarter’s Ryan Kiera Armstrong to lead the sequel series
Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy, la cazavampiros (1997)
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer legacy sequel series is coming together a lot faster than expected. Indeed, Deadline is reporting that Ryan Kierra Armstrong has landed the coveted role of the new Slayer opposite returning star Sarah Michelle Gellar. The fifteen-year-old Armstrong, despite her young age, is already a Hollywood vet, having played the title role in the Stephen King adaptation, Firestarter, in addition to one of the leads in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew on Disney+.

To note, Armstrong is much younger than Gellar was when she started playing the role back in 1997, which makes me think this reboot is going for a somewhat more realistic depiction of teenage life. Back in the nineties, it was commonplace for adult actors to play teen roles, with the practice still in effect in shows like Euphoria. However, other shows like Stranger Things started the practice of casting age-appropriate actors, to great effect,...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Casts Star Wars Actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong In Lead Role
Image
The reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer has finally found its new lead in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and Stephen King’s Firestarter actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong.

While the new show has yet to receive a title, and Armstrong’s character's name has not yet been revealed, she will appear alongside original vampire slayer Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is reprising her role as Buffy Summers in the new take on the iconic property. Chloé Zhao is directing the pilot episode, which is penned by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. Making the announcement, Gellar said:

"I want to introduce you to [Ryan Kiera Armstrong]. From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. To have that kind of emotional intelligence , and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.

Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy Reboot Finds Its New Vampire Slayer in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Star
Image
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot's development is moving quickly. The highly anticipated project has been in the works for many years, but it wasn't until early this year that the project received an encouraging update.

After years of turning down the idea of returning to Buffy, series star Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed in February that she was working on a Buffy sequel series alongside Chloé Zhao as director and Nora and Lilla Zuckerman as writers. Now, Deadline has officially confirmed that Gellar will reprise her role as Buffy Summers, and the sequel series will star a new slayer: Ryan Kiera Armstrong, as Hulu has officially ordered a pilot for the series.

So far, there are few details about the untitled Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series. Armstrong is set to play the lead, although details of her character are still under wraps, except that she's described...

‘Buffy’ Reboot Finds Its New Slayer: Ryan Kiera Armstrong To Star With Sarah Michelle Gellar In Hulu Pilot
Exclusive: Ryan Kiera Armstrong has landed the lead opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, which has a pilot order at Hulu. Armstrong will play the new slayer in the untitled Buffyverse project, which Gellar executive produces in addition to reprising her signature role as Buffy Summers.

Oscar winner Chloé Zhao is directing the pilot, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. No additional information has been provided about the project, referred to as the next chapter in the Buffyverse, which comes from 20th Television and Searchlight TV. The character played by Armstrong is described in casting materials as an introverted high-school student.

There is some symbolism in Armstong’s casting as Geller’s spiritual successor — the actresses’ names, Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Sarah Michelle Gellar, share the same cadence. But it was Armstong’s acting chops that won her the role,...

Final Destination Bloodlines
Image
You don’t need Esp to know that Final Destination Bloodlines will start with a premonition. And this one’s a belter, eclipsing the plane crash (1), rollercoaster derailment (3), speedway crash (4) and suspension bridge collapse (5) that have previously acted as the franchise’s gory-glory curtain-raisers. Heck, it perhaps even rivals the second instalment’s Route 2 pile-up that made driving behind a logging truck such a no-no for all right-minded motorists.

The precog carnage this time takes place atop a soaring, needle-thin tower not unlike the Stratosphere in Las Vegas, as revellers in the sky-view restaurant stomp their stuff to a band playing ‘Shout’. Iris (Brec Bassinger) is the one being ‘treated’ to a preview, as a rogue coin flung by a bratty kid kickstarts Death’s signature Rube Goldberg routine: champagne corks pop, drums thud, chandeliers tremor, rivets spring, heels scrape, the glass floor cracks, and… well, by the time this...

Class of 1999 (1990) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Sometimes when I make a video on one of my favorite movies, I find something a little extra upon further viewing. Obviously, there is some research that goes into it as I like to look up what else the writer, director, or actors did or even what possible sequels there are. Class of 1984 is one of my favorite horror adjacent titles out there from the script by Tom Holland and great performances from Roddy McDowell, Perry King, and all of the main gang members. It shows the very real fears of what teachers in bad areas could potentially deal with, only with the knob turned all the way to 11 and it’s immensely rewatchable. While I had heard that there were sequels to the movie, I wrote them off as cash-ins, especially since they were quite a bit after, and the movie was fine as a standalone. Then I...

Why Stephen King Wrote Under The Pseudonym Richard Bachman
Image
After Stephen King published "Carrie" in 1973, Brian De Palma's eponymous adaptation brought it to life to stark, harrowing effect. Although King had already amassed a following by then, De Palma's film undoubtedly contributed to the novel's (and the author's) increasing popularity. After four steady years of writing compelling stories, King struck gold with "The Shining," which still remains one of the most popular stories associated with the master of horror. Infused with personal elements from King's life, "The Shining" tackles the cabin fever trope with taut mastery over suspense and pacing, where the psychological and the supernatural meet to form a riveting tale.

A year later, King savored success again with "It," which can be considered a milestone entry in the pulp horror genre that we take for granted today. This is also the juncture when King almost stopped writing more horror, as he was plagued with self...

The Prodigy Start the Fire with Hype Set at Coachella 2025: Watch
Image
The legendary UK electronic band, The Prodigy, returned to Coachella on Friday night for an energizing set that included hits like “Firestarter,” “Omen,” and many more.

The Prodigy’s Mc, Maxim, led the group the 14-song set at the Mojave Tent, showcasing their characteristic intensity right off the bat by opening with their 1997 hit “Breathe,” followed by “Voodoo People.”

As the night progressed, the crowd was reportedly beaming with an upbeat, hyped energy, with mosh pits abound. This came to a head at a poignant moment, when Maxim and producer Liam Howlett paid tribute to the late frontman, Keith Flint, by pairing “Beyond the Deathray” with “Firestarter,” with images of Flint’s iconic, double-mohawk silhouette flashing on the screen.

The Prodigy concluded the main portion of their set 11 songs in with 2009’s “Invaders Must Die,” but came back out for three encores, including their controversial big beat classic,...

Drew Barrymore fans call out ‘crazy’ reveal with Billy Idol
Image
Drew Barrymore had several surprises during a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.

One of those surprises was her guest, as she didn’t know Billy Idol would stop by.

The actress and talk show host welcomed the legendary singer to her show and discussed his past.

That included Billy’s wild days of living life “24/7” and Drew sharing a special moment with him.

Drew rose to fame as a child actress, with many people first seeing her as Gertie in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

Some fans likely didn’t realize that Drew met Billy when she was younger.

Drew and Billy had a surprisingly early encounter

After greeting Billy, Drew Barrymore expressed excitement over his dropping by to see her, then addressed her producers.

“I hope to God, please, control room, tell me you have the picture of me and Billy at Limelight, the club,...

Stephen King's The Running Man reboot speeding to a November 2025 release
Image
Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright has an intriguing new project. He’s finishing up another Stephen King adaptation for fans of cinematic versions of the horror icon’s prose.

The massive success of the first It remake increased interest in rebooting King's past works, including the ones that didn’t do so well. So far, no one appears interested in developing a new version of Maximum Overdrive, but this November, we'll see the second big-screen version of 1987's The Running Man.

The Running Man originally debuted as a novella King wrote under his “Richard Bachman” pen name. The dark dystopian work about a game show where contestants face a life-or-death chase with hunters on their heels had much potential. That’s not how things played out in theaters. While King’s books continued to sell high volumes, films like Firestarter and Creepshow 2, didn’t set critics or fans on fire.

After It, Bill Skarsgard Starred In Another Spooky Stephen King Adaptation
Image
Stephen King superfans, especially those who have read the books in the "Dark Tower" series (currently being adapted by Mike Flanagan), will be able to tell you that many of the author's stories interconnect in unexpected ways. For instance: in the original novel of King's "It," Dick Halloran from "The Shining" appears and interacts with one of the story's child protagonists. There is a scene in "Wizard and Glass," the fourth "Dark Tower" novel, where the characters visit the plague-ridden reality of King's "The Stand." The character of Father Callahan from "Salem's Lot" becomes one of the main characters of the "Dark Tower" series. There are also several King stories that take place in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine. There are many other connections that a deep-cut King reader could add to this list.

In 2018, television honchos Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason decided to take advantage of their...

Blumhouse's first horror movie of 2025 arrives on Peacock this month
Image
This month, Peacock has already dropped several horror titles on its platform, including The Exorcist, Exorcist: The Beginning, Last Night in Soho, The Vatican Tapes and Pulse. Now, the streamer is set to add yet another chilling addition to its platform. A horror film that hit theaters earlier this year! It's the Blumhouse werewolf horror movie Wolf Man. It will reportedly make its way to Peacock on Friday, April 18, 2025.

Wolf Man was actually Blumhouse's first horror flick of the year. Since then, we've seen one other horror movie from the company be released in 2025, which was The Woman in the Yard. The werewolf horror comes from Leigh Whannell, who not only directed the film but also co-wrote the script with his wife Corbett Tuck. Whannell is best known for co-creating the Saw franchise with his friend James Wan. Some of his previous works that you might've watched are the horror movies Saw,...

Universal's New Monster Movie Sets Streaming Release Date on Peacock After Flopping in Theaters
Image
Universal Pictures owns the rights to some of the most iconic villains, which the studio named the "Universal Monsters." However, it has yet to find its rhythm with the recent adaptations.

Universal was planning to launch the Dark Universe, which was set to debut with 2017's The Mummy, and create an McU-like joint universe that would feature characters like Wolf Man, Dracula, The Invisible Man, and more. However, following the release of The Mummy and its poor reception, Universal canceled the universe. Leigh Whannell later revived the plans following the success of his 2020's The Invisible Man, and returned to the universe with 2025's Wolf Man. Following a disappointing box office run, Wolf Man will be heading on streaming on Apr. 18 on Peacock.

Wolf Man had been in development for over a decade by the time it hit theaters early this year. The movie was announced in 2014, and was set...

10 Scariest Stephen King Monsters, Ranked
Image
Stephen King makes no bones about turning humans into the real monsters of his stories wherever necessary. For all that Carrie White is a dangerous telekinetic, it's the banal teenage bully and a fanatic mother that puts her over the edge. "Firestarter" stars a rogue government agency willing to manipulate civilians, and "The Stand" may ultimately come down to cosmic horror and angelic good, but it all begins with our hubris among the natural world of viruses. It's up front stuff, but it's also not the only kind of horror King likes to put into play.

"True" monsters do lurk in King's stories, and while not every one of them is the creepiest thing ever put to page, everyone eventually finds a favorite critter to be horrified by. Some need more time to shine before they become standouts, and a few only serve to move the plot around. But others are truly scary,...

The Forgotten TV Miniseries That Turned A Stephen King Story Into Marvel's X-Men
Image
In Stephen King's "Firestarter," a child develops the ability to harness pyrokinesis. This kid, Charlie, is soon hounded by a government agency known as The Shop, who had conducted drug trials on her parents, Andy and Vicky, when they were young. Nefarious without limits, the Shop kills Vicky and kidnaps Charlie, but Andy is able to use his limited powers (known as The Push) to search for his daughter and flee with her. "Firestarter" fleshes out this perilous journey, honing in on Charlie's inner struggle and how everyone around her wants to control her powers one way or another. It's a novel about cultivating autonomy, which often takes root when one faces the brutality of the world firsthand. Although "Firestarter" isn't as thematically dense as, say, "Carrie" or "The Stand," it examines the making and unmaking of identity, with society forever ready to intrude if someone dares to stray from the norm.

Stephen King’s ‘The Institute’ Is a Grab Bag of Greatest Hits You’d Rather Revisit [The Losers’ Club Podcast]
Ryan Kiera Armstrong in Llamas De Venganza (2022)
A scoop of Firestarter, a dash of It, and just a soupçon of Carrie and The Shining — Stephen King’s novel The Institute is like a bowl brimming with the author’s greatest hits. But does it go down smooth? That’s what the Losers’ Club asks in their episode about the 2019 tome, which takes readers inside the eponymous Institute where a mysterious gaggle of doctors, scientists, and thugs subject psychically-touched children to terrible tests, many of which border on pure torture.

Join Losers Randall Colburn, Ashley Casseday, Justin Gerber, and Dan Pfleegor as they dissect what the story has to say about friendship, U.S. foreign policy, and the youth of today. Questions abound! Can King write modern kids as well as he can those of the ‘50s and ‘60s? How does the paranoia of early books like Firestarter and The Stand factor in here? Drew Barrymore’s Josie Geller In ‘Never Been Kissed’: The Hero We Didn’t Know We Needed
Drew Barrymore at an event for Están todos bien (2009)
Image Source: Amazon For more than forty years, Drew Barrymore has captured hearts on the big screen. She started as a child star in classics like E.T. and Firestarter, then grew into the rom-com queen of the ‘90s, with hits like The Wedding Singer. But there’s one film that fans still hold especially dear—Never Been Kissed. It’s a story that perfectly balances the chaos of high school with the bittersweet yearning for love and acceptance, creating a film that continues to strike a chord. Never Been Kissed follows Josie Geller, a sweet but socially awkward 25-year-old copy editor working for the Chicago Sun-Times. Josie has spent her life on the sidelines—clumsy in love and haunted by a less-than-stellar high school experience. Her life takes an unexpected turn when her tough editor, Gus, assigns her an ambitious undercover story. Her task? To go back to high school,...

Stephen King's Favorite Superhero Is A DC Comics Icon
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Stephen King has a soft spot for comic books and superheroes. "The Dark Tower" series features the Wolves of the Calla, who wear outfits right out of Doctor Doom's closet. King's 1980 novel "Firestarter" features a psychic father on the run with his fire-starting daughter, like "The Fugitive" mixed with "X-Men." (King later wrote the actual X-Men in the 1985 special issue "Heroes for Hope.")

In 2010, King wrote a back-up story in the first five issues of Scott Snyder's horror comic "American Vampire." (These days, Snyder is writing a new "Absolute" take on Batman, a character King also has plenty of affection for.) But in 1986, King penned a foreword for the landmark 400th issue of "Batman" delving into his love for the Caped Crusader.

The actual story, written by Doug Moench, runs a super-sized 60 pages. Presumably to keep production efficient,...

Drew Barrymore movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Drew Barrymore is a child of Hollywood royalty and a Golden Globe winning actress whose career has spanned nearly her entire life, making her first credited screen performance at the age of three. But how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Barrymore was born to a celebrated acting family though she never really knew her famous ancestors. Her grandfather was John Barrymore, star of “Grand Hotel”, “Twentieth Century” and “Dinner at Eight” among others. She is also the great grand niece of Oscar winners Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore. Lionel won one of the earliest Oscars as Best Actor for “A Free Soul” in 1931 but is probably best remembered as the villainous Mr. Potter of the Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.” His sister Ethel won the 1945 Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “None but the Lonely Heart...

Stephen King's Misery Starring Kathy Bates and James Caan Is a Free Streaming Hit
Image
Stephen King's Misery has become a free streaming hit after dropping on Tubi a few weeks ago. Users of the free streaming service are finding the 1990 adaptation to be a worthy psychological horror thriller that just has to be revisited. At the time of writing, Misery sits in third spot on Tubi's list of most popular films. Other titles currently vying for attention on the platform include the Wesley Snipes thriller, Murder at 1600, Patrick Swayze's 80s hit, Road House, and the demonically delightful Megan Fox horror movie, Jennifer's Body.

Written by American playwright William Goldman, and directed by Rob Reiner, Misery is based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Stephen King. The story follows a writer named Paul Sheldon, who's returning from his retreat where he wrote the end of a successful series of romantic novels centering around the fictional character Misery Chastain. Sheldon has...

Drew Barrymore Credits ‘Bad Girls’ With Changing Her Life: “I Can Trace It Back To That Experience”
Image
Drew Barrymore credits 1994’s Western action flick Bad Girls with changing her life at 16 years old.

In a recent episode on The Drew Barrymore Show, the host reunited with co-star Andie MacDowell and the two reminisced about the film (which also featured Madeleine Stowe and Mary Stuart Masterson) about four brothel workers on the lam after a justifiable homicide and who set out in search for a better life in the Wild West.

“When we did Bad Girls, I was 16. I was such a dumbass,” Barrymore said, to which MacDowell responded, “Oh my God, you were so beautiful and so good.”

The Charlie’s Angels star continued, “I always talk about how much it changed my life. If I hadn’t done that film, there’s no way I’d be sitting here right now because it was that film that showed me if you care about something, be involved.

George R.R. Martin: “There would be no literal dragons” on Giving the Targaryens a Crazy Superpower That Would’ve Doomed Game of Thrones
Image
Dragons play a huge role in Game of Thrones—they are the symbol of power and control for the Targaryen bloodline, and anyone who possesses or claims these fire-breathing creatures is feared or respected. Surprisingly, the early drafts of A Song of Ice and Fire had no dragons in it.

George R.R. Martin in The Late Show with Stephen Colbert / Credits: YouTube

George R.R. Martin did not think about bringing these mystical beasts into his fantasy lore. He had a different vision for the Targaryens which, in retrospect, would have been underwhelming and ridiculous, and the franchise might not be as successful as it is today.

Game of Thrones almost had no dragons, according to George R.R. Martin

We’ve seen a lot of movies and shows with dragons in them, but nothing as grand and iconic as Game of Thrones. The feral beasts in the show earned a proper spotlight,...

Razzies 2025: ‘Joker 2’ Leads With Seven Noms, Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga Up for Worst Actors; ‘Madame Web,’ ‘Megalopolis,’ ‘Reagan’ at Six Nods
Image
This year’s Academy Award nominations are set to be announced Thursday, after being delayed due to the devastating Los Angeles fires. As such, the annual Golden Raspberry Awards got to get ahead of the Oscars on Tuesday with their own crop of nominees, highlighting what its members believe to be the worst in film for 2024. “Joker: Folie à Deux” leads the field with seven nominations, while “Madame Web,” “Megalopolis,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan” are close behind with six nods apiece.

For “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the musical sequel to Todd Phillips’ Oscar-nominated DC Comics crime film “Joker,” landed nods in worst picture, director, screenplay and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are both up for worst actress and worst actor, respectively, as well as worst screen combo. The “Joker” sequel was poorly reviewed out of its premiere at the Venice Film Festival and wound up a box office bomb,...

Why Warren Beatty Turned Down A Classic Stephen King Movie
Image
When Jack Nicholson starred in Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of "The Shining," the horror stigma surrounding Stephen King temporarily disappeared in Hollywood. Though he tended to write pulpy, gory fictions, if the A-list team of Kubrick and Nicholson deemed his material worthy of a major motion picture, perhaps there was box office and awards glory to be mined from his other books (which the prolific author was pumping out at an astonishing pace).

This notion would be challenged something fierce throughout the 1980s. While esteemed directors like David Cronenberg and Rob Reiner earned favorable reviews for, respectively, "The Dead Zone" and "Stand by Me," critics had little use for "Cujo," "Firestarter," "Children of the Corn," "Silver Bullet," "Pet Sematary," and the King-directed "Maximum Overdrive." Really, if not for Reiner's "Stand by Me," the prestige-picture potential of a King tale might've been blotted out completely.

This was the Hollywood state...

Stephen King Absolutely Hated One Jack Nicholson Movie
Image
Stephen King is an opinionated fellow. Stroll through the fiction aisles of your local bookstore and examine the covers of newish novels, and you probably won't have to search long to find one bearing praise from Stephen King -- which is touching because, in this age of distracted everything, it's nice to see one of the world's most prominent authors exhorting people to lose themselves in a book.

King isn't always a ray of sunshine though. He's infamous for his dislike of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" film adaptation, and hasn't held back on other cinematic interpretations of his novels. And when Entertainment Weekly started giving King column space in its printed pages back in the mid 2000s to rant and rave about all things pop culture, he was unsparing with his hatred for the latest music by Jewel, Beyoncé, and Celine Dion while also unloading both barrels on prestige...

‘Night Harvest’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Scot Scurlock, Dylan A. Young, Timothy Rogers, Faith McCoy, Garius Kemp, Tanner Bluewolf, Madelyn Hopfensperger, Daniel Considine | Written and Directed by Charlie Steeds

For his third film of the year, writer/director Charlie Steeds delivers Night Harvest, a blend of Firestarter and Dark Night of the Scarecrow, with a dash of Friday the 13th: The New Blood thrown in for good measure. It’s an odd mix to be sure, but it fits in with it actually fits in with Lord of Wolves, which could best be described as Hellraiser with werewolves and the Christmas slasher He Sees You When You’re Sleeping. And Steeds has shown a talent for blending genres and delivering bloody, atmospheric horror with its roots in 80s cinema.

The film begins with a chilling black-and-white prologue set in 1958, centring on a farmer who has an unfortunate run-in with an inbred hillbilly named Judd. This...

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
The following contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, now playing in theatersSonic The Hedgehog 3's soundtrack is a mix of fun rock, new tracks, and deep-cuts to the history of game franchise. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is in many ways a love letter to the game series, especially Sonic Adventure 2. There are lots of little references to the history of the games found throughout the film, ranging from little easter eggs to instrumental themes. This element can also be felt throughout the film's music choices, which perfectly fit Sonic the Hedgehog 3's cast of characters and help lighten up some of the film's darker moments.

Although a formal soundtrack for the film hasn't been released yet, there are many clear song choices made throughout the movie. The best of these embody the spirit of the original games and fit neatly into the film, with one fan-favorite song from...

How To Read Every Stephen King Book In Order
Image
Horror legend Stephen King has written a fair few books over the years. Ever since he burst on the scene with "Carrie" in 1974, he's given fans at least one book nearly every year. Since most of his work has been extremely popular, he's also established himself as a bit of an authority on the horror front -- and isn't shy about commenting about either the genre or his craft as a writer.

Thanks to King's status as a horror luminary and extensive work in many other genres, we've analyzed his work many times before. You may have seen us discuss why King's endings have a reputation for being disappointing, look into his biggest career regret involving (of all things) a forgotten TV commercial, and examine the one Stephen King book that will never get a film adaption due to the author voluntarily scrubbing it from his catalog.

However, in order...

Stephen King's 'The Institute' Gets First Look and Tease From Creators
Image
2025 will be a great year for Stephen King fans, as not only will there be a plethora of film adaptations hitting theaters across the country, but we’re also being treated to not one, but two TV series based on the works of the prolific author. HBO will bring us Welcome to Derry, while MGM+ is producing an eight-episode thriller based on the 2019 novel, The Institute. Ahead of next year’s premiere, we now have our first glimpse into the series thanks to director Jack Bender and creator Benjamin Cavell, who recently explained the decision to age-up the kids, and how it connects to the broader King universe.

King’s novel follows twelve-year-old genius Luke Ellis, who – after his parents are murdered – is kidnapped and taken to a facility that houses other young kids who have the gifts of telepathy and telekinesis. Bender explained at Content London today (via Variety...

Creature Commandos Owes A Huge Debt To This Horror Superhero Comic
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Spoilers for "Creature Commandos" to follow.

"Creature Commandos," and the new DC Universe with it, is here. This animated show has a plot in the same vein as creator James Gunn's 2021 film "The Suicide Squad": U.S. black ops bigwig Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) recruits an eccentric cast of superpowered convicts from across the DC Universe and remakes them into (creature) commandos.

So, government-employed superheroes who are modeled on classic horror movie monsters. Are we talking about the Creature Commandos or the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.)? That organization originates from Mike Mignola's "Hellboy" comics, the best take on the "monsters as superheroes" idea also found in "Creature Commandos."

During the first batch of "Hellboy" stories, from 1994 to 2001, Hellboy was employed by the B.P.R.D. as a monster investigator/hunter.

Mike Flanagan Is Right About One Of The Most Underrated Stephen King Movies Of All Time
Image
Dozens of Stephen King's literary works have received movie and TV adaptations, but modern horror master Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) recently highlighted an oft-overlooked adaptation that definitely deserves more attention in Christine. King has produced well over 100 novels, collections, screenplays, and other assorted works, and some have been adapted into all-time great movies, like The Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile. Others have been complete misfires, like Silver Bullet or Firestarter. Still others have been reappraised recently and are evolving into cult classics.

Mike Flanagan recently spoke about King's most underrated adaptations, and highlighted four very specific choices, some of which make more sense than others. Flanagan's opinion on the matter certainly means something, given that he has produced some incredible King adaptations himself, including Doctor Sleep, Gerald's Game, and the upcoming Life of Chuck. Of the four choices he gave, one really stands out as...

A Divisive Stephen King Adaptation With 16% Rt Score Finds A New Streaming Home
Image
Author Stephen King is one of the most recognized and prolific authors of this era. Best known as a horror writer, King began his work as a published author through 1974's Carrie, which earned him massive acclaim. He has since gone on to publish The Shining (1977), Firestarter (1980), Pet Sematary (1983), and countless other legendary works. Throughout his career, he has released dozens of books and hundreds of short stories.

Unsurprisingly, having so much attention on King's works brought Hollywood to his doorstep. The renowned author has seen numerous adaptations. Children of the Corn (1984), Misery (1990), It (2017), and Kubrick's The Shining (1980) were all inspired by his stories. While some of his movies have failed, King's name generally serves as a boon for any project that bears it. There are, however, some works that have not seen success. One of them is now coming to a new streaming home.

Drew Barrymore's Career Came Full Circle With A Certain Stephen King Cameo
Image
Peter and Bobby Farrelly's 2005 romantic comedy "Fever Pitch," based on the Nick Hornby novel, was about the relationship travails of a level-headed businesswoman named Lindsey (Drew Barrymore) as she attempted to date a funny and charming schoolteacher named Ben (Jimmy Fallon). Ben admits early in their courtship that he is a fan of the Boston Red Sox. Nay, not just a fan, but an embarrassingly devoted superfan who attends all their games. Lindsey doesn't know much about baseball, and she has to accept that, if she wants to keep seeing Ben, she'll have to attend many, many baseball games with him. She'll also have to follow his emotional ups and downs as his favorite team wins or loses.

Curiously, Hornby's original book wasn't about a baseball team, but Arsenal, an English football club. The title "Fever Pitch" makes more sense with baseball.

"Fever Pitch" was fine, and nothing more.

First Stephen King Written Animated Short Adapts Short Story From 1968
Image
One of Stephen King's earliest short stories, "Here There Be Tygers," has now been turned into an animated short film. King remains one of the most iconic and prolific horror authors of all time, writing novels like It, Carrie, The Shining, and Misery, among others, as well as many short stories. "Here There Be Tygers" was first published in Ubris magazine in 1968 before appearing in his Skeleton Crew collection in 1985. The short story follows a third-grader who discovers a tiger hiding out in the school bathroom.

Dark Corners Films now releases an animated short film called Lily, which adapts the events of King's "Here There Be Tygers." The short film, which clocks in at just under 10 minutes, is told mostly in black-and-white, with splashes of bold red and green to convey some of the story's key themes. Kate Siegel, who is best known for appearing in Mike Flanagan projects...

This Underrated Stephen King Book Missed The Chance For A Carrie Connection
Image
Firestarter is a hugely underrated Stephen King book that follows a young girl named Charlie, who displays pyrokinetic abilities that allow her to manipulate fire. The general details of Charlie's powers, and her quest to protect herself from them, are plot lines that King has used before in his works - namely, in Carrie. Firestarter's ending may not directly connect to any other of King's works, but it includes several thematic connections and aesthetic allusions that are fairly easy to spot given some familiarity with the author's bibliography.

This is likely a coincidence, as the two stories have completely different sets of characters and culminate differently, but the author easily could have tied them together with a fun Easter egg. When the powers become too dangerous for Charlie to maintain alone, the government seeks her out to harness them for their own purposes. It's a gripping thriller that manifests...

This Hellboy Heroine Is A Homage To A Classic Stephen King Story
Image
Stephen King is primarily a prose writer, but he loves comic books too. He's dipped his toes into the graphic medium, contributing to 1985 one-shot "Heroes for Hope: Starring the X-Men" (a "comic jam" featuring writing from Alan Moore and George R. R. Martin too), and co-writing the horror comic "American Vampire" with Scott Snyder.

Before those, King's eighth novel — "Firestarter" — was him telling a superhero story in the horror space. "Firestarter" follows the McGees, a father (Andy) and daughter (Charlie) on the run from a government agency called the Shop. Years prior, Andy and his wife Vicky volunteered for experiments with the drug Lot 6, which turned him into a psychic and made Charlie born a "firestarter," able to spark flames with a thought.

King's seventh novel, "The Dead Zone," was about a man gaining clairvoyance and ultimately trying to assassinate a political candidate he foresees causing a nuclear war. "Firestarter" feels like a spiritual sequel,...
