Genndy Tartakovsky Was Only Offered ‘Clone Wars’ Because George Lucas’ Prequel Trilogy Tanked Star Wars Sales
Image
Genndy Tartakovsky is a legend of the animation medium, having created some of the most popular Cartoon Network shows. During the early 2000s, Tartakovsky was fresh off the success of Samurai Jack when he was tapped to helm an animated series set in the Star Wars universe and focusing on the Clone Wars event.

The proposed animated series was created to explore the titular conflict in the space opera saga’s prequel trilogy. However, in an interview, Tartakovsky revealed the real reason he secured the gig. The animator explained how the franchise’s declining sales in one department were the reason for the animated show’s creation, and here is what Tartakovsky said.

Genndy Tartakovsky revealed he was offered Clone Wars to boost Star Wars sales

Before the beloved Dave Filoni version of The Clone Wars, filmmaker George Lucas sought to explore the titular conflict in a 2D animated series.

Graveyard Season 2 Review: Crime Drama with a Reflective Twist
Image
Graveyard Season 2 emerges as a Turkish Netflix original that redefines its narrative format with four two-part episodes—a shift that reinvents the way its intricate cases unfold.

This series introduces us to Istanbul’s layered streets, where modernity and tradition coalesce in a setting that is both bustling and steeped in history. The titular “Graveyard”—a moniker for the cold case department—stands as a metaphor for the unresolved tragedies embedded in the city’s collective memory (one might even call it a repository of forgotten voices).

Here, the investigation centers on crimes that have long left deep scars, particularly those affecting women, and exposes institutional practices that have silently permitted injustice.

The portrayal of detectives balancing their professional duties with personal burdens brings to light the internal conflicts within those sworn to protect. With its narrative shift from long, uninterrupted episodes to segmented investigations, the series crafts a rhythm...

‘Graveyard’ Season 2 Recap & Ending Explained: How Did Onem Solve The Four Cases?
Image
Directed by Abdullah Oguz, Graveyard, the 8-part investigative drama, introduces us to the Special Crimes Division that was tasked with solving cases of femicide. Well, I have to say here that Graveyard season 2 is an extremely tedious watch. The problem is not the length of the episodes but the absurdity of the subplots that are created just to mislead the police officers, which was what made it a task to watch it. That said, let’s find out what happened in the various episodes and how Onem Ozulku and her team found out the truth.

Spoiler Alert

Case 1: Silent Devil

The first case that the Special Crimes Division handled was that of Yasemin Turanli, who worked as a house help at the Sadoglu mansion. Generally, Onem and her team took charge of a case after it happened, but this time around, they were present at the crime scene as it was happening.

Netflix adding 19 movies and shows this week
Image
Time to reload your binge list, gang. Netflix has more movies and shows, both new and *kinda* old for you this week. Catch old favorites and find new ones this week on your favorite streaming service. It is Netflix, right? Right.

I'm sure you'll be shocked, but there's something for everyone this week. Comedies, thrillers, dramas, family fare - although there is one shocking development. For the first time in what feels like a decade, you won't see a new stand-up comedy special debut this week. There are already several great specials to watch, just no new ones this week. Don't worry, the week is packed with laughs.

One of the best comedy series ever adds two more seasons to the rotation this week, and sequels to a pair of the top family films of the past few years arrive as well. There's a new season of an acclaimed sports...

‘Graveyard’ Netflix Recap & Ending Explained: What Does ‘Toprak’ Symbolize?
Image
The Netflix series Graveyard, through its gripping accounts, tackles the still dispassionate treatment of the growing cases of femicide in Turkey. Everything from deeply seated patriarchal values and state and corporate collusion to the tunnel vision of the bureaucratic system has nourished the seedbed of gender-based aggression. It is at this juncture that Önem Özülkü is introduced to oversee the new Special Crimes Unit as captain. Earlier orders stemmed from a leadership that was deeply entrenched in unprogressive masculine ideals. Önem’s appointment is expected to bring some parity to the unequal balance of the state of affairs. A commentary on the dilapidated bureaucratic system of the nation, Graveyard presents a somewhat gloomy and dismal picture of law enforcement as hundreds of women passively drift into nothingness without justice.

Spoilers Ahead

What can we expect from the new unit?

Norse Mythology, Vol. 1 by Neil Gaiman, P. Craig Russell, & various artists
Image
Comics artists of a certain age always want to draw Loki in a helmet with big twisty ram’s horns. I know why, they know why – we all know why. But reminding readers of bombastic comics for kids, hacked out monthly and printed on the cheapest paper available, might not be the mental connection you want to make in your classy hardcover collection of retold myths. I’m just saying.

Norse Mythology, Volume 1 is the latest in the long line of floppies and sturdier-formatted objects intending to, as far as I can tell, create sequential pictures for every last word Neil Gaiman has ever written in his long career. (Look out for Duran Duran by Neil Gaiman: The Graphic Novel!)

As is usual for this project, Gaiman wrote the original thing and is not credited with anything at all related to this book. P. Craig Russell adapted the original thing into comics,...

10 Terrible Stephen King Adaptations That Are Begging for Remakes
Image
With over four hundred writing credits on IMDb, there is no disputing that Stephen King is one of the world's most influential authors. His novels, short stories, and novellas have been adapted into wildly successful films, like The Shining, Misery, and The Shawshank Redemption. Unfortunately, not every adaptation of King's works has been a home run.

Given the sheer volume of films and miniseries inspired by King, some are bound to be underwhelming. There are multiple ways an adaptation can miss the mark. In the most common scenario, a film will follow the plot of a story while missing its emotional underpinning and deeper meaning. Conversely, some films use the name of a famous novel to grab attention but abandon the details. And other times it's a simple matter of miscast characters or improper timing.

The Worst Stephen King Movie, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Everyone has their own unique choice for the best Stephen King movie — but what's the worst?

Before Stephen King became a best selling millionaire novelist, he scratched by a meager living selling short stories on the side. Some of those early short stories appeared in the University of Maine literary journal "Ubris," but King finally made one of his first professional sales with "Graveyard Shift," a horror story purchased and published by the magazine "Cavalier" in 1970. The story would later end up in King's well-loved short story collection "Night Shift," a book that served as a kind of gateway drug to budding King fans. And as long as there have been Stephen King books there have been Stephen King movies — his 1974 debut novel "Carrie" was adapted to the screen by 1976. From there, Hollywood was off and running, bring King's work to the movies left and right.

When 1990 rolled around, it...

“I went home with a few bruises”: Lightsaber Battles Were Not the Only Star Wars Scenes That Nearly Broke Hayden Christensen
Image
Hayden Christensen is a widespread name in pop culture for his role as Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise. He featured in the second and the third installments of the Prequel Trilogy Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith before returning to his role in the Disney+ Star Wars shows Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka.

The Prequel Trilogy focused on Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker’s slow descent into the dark side until he ultimately becomes Darth Vader. Although the actor did a lot to make his performance as iconic as possible, Christensen’s work always resulted in a mixed reception among critics and fans.

Hayden Christensen has spoken repeatedly about his injuries while filming Star Wars. From the lightsaber battles to flying a shaky speeder, the Shattered Glass actor admitted that his role in the space opera epic was physically demanding.

Rod Serling's Wax Museum: The Twilight Zone Sequel That Was Buried Before It Began
Image
True lightning-in-a-bottle phenomena are immensely difficult to recapture. 60 years after "The Twilight Zone" completed its initial run in 1964, subsequent attempts to resuscitate the property -- either with an anthology film or reboot series -- have failed to match its cultural impact, even with vaunted directors Steven Spielberg, George Miller, Wes Craven, William Friedkin, Jonathan Frakes, Ana Lily Amirpour, Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, and Osgood Perkins lending their talents behind the camera. It's a testament to everything the late Rod Serling accomplished with his surreal amalgamation of genre storytelling and social commentary that we tend to overlook his many other significant contributions as an artist (which include co-penning the 1968 "Planet of the Apes" movie).

When the original "Twilight Zone" ended, however, its legacy seemed far from assured. Serling had burnt himself out after writing so many episodes for the series, with the consensus being that the show's final two seasons were...

Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again Is Resurrecting Bullseye From The Netflix Graveyard
Image
In case it wasn't already clear by now, Marvel Studios is doubling down on its connections to the Marvel Netflix universe of streaming shows. Next up on the reunion tour for "Daredevil: Born Again"? The Devil of Hell's Kitchen imposter known as Bullseye, portrayed by Wilson Bethel in season 3 of "Daredevil." The news comes from ComicBook.com, which reports only that he'll make some sort of appearance in the retooled series -- but "it's unclear how extensive his role will be."

Fans will remember that the rather tortured character of Benjamin Poindexter played an integral role in the war against Matt Murdock and Wilson "Kingpin" Fisk in the Netflix series. Season 3 ultimately ended with Bullseye on the wrong end of a fight between the two foes, shattering his spine and left paralyzed. It's unclear exactly how or even if Marvel will incorporate all these prior events into their new series, but...

Lion King's Prequel Reveals Scar Was An Even Worse Ruler Than Fans Thought
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Disney Villains – Scar #4 One of the more significant takeaways from Disney's The Lion King is that Scar was an ineffective leader, resulting from his failure to respect the Circle of Life. Although the movie's new prequel comic recently made an effort to portray Scar as a more effective king, the latest issue from the same series confirms that Scar actually had no excuse for his later failings.

Disney Villains – Scar #4 – by writer Chuck Brown, artist Trevor Fraley, colorist Chiara Di Francia and letterer Jeff Eckleberry – features the villain at the height of his power, yet plagued by visions of a desolate Pride Lands, one that will be familiar to viewers of the film.

King on Screen Trailer Showcases New Documentary About Stephen King Movies and TV Shows
Image
If his near-fatal accident in 1999 had ended differently, Stephen King would still have been one of the greatest horror writers of his generation. Thankfully, King survived the incident, which not only allowed him to continue delivering stories for over two decades and counting, but inspired him to complete his Dark Tower novels and incorporate his own trauma into the story. Now a new documentary, King on Screen, is delving into the many adaptations of King’s work including some of his most memorable and forgettable movie and TV offerings.

Darkstar Pictures have released a new trailer for the Daphné Baiwir-directed documentary, which is described as:

“1976, Brian de Palma directs Carrie, the first novel by Stephen King. Since then, more than 50 directors have adapted the master of horror's books, in more than 80 films and series, making him the most adapted author alive in the world . What's so fascinating about him...

Review: Fukasaku Kinji’s Crime Thriller Yakuza Graveyard on Radiance Films Blu-ray
Submitted in loving memory by Keiko's handlers who were helping to reintroduce him to the sea.
There are more than enough corpses to fill a cemetery once the smoke clears in Yakuza Graveyard, but in Fukasaku Kinji’s caustic thriller national honor is the central casualty. With Japan’s severe economical crisis spreading across both sides of the law, a shooting can become a transaction. “If you kill someone, you owe damages” is how a drug-addicted prostitute justifies detective Kuroiwa’s (Watari Tetsuya) responsibility for her after he’s killed her pimp—just one of the film’s many relationships defined in business as opposed to moral terms.

Assigned to the local crime beat to cool his rogue-cop jets, Kuroiwa quickly finds himself wedged between the Nishida and Ushin families, warring yakuza groups with unsavory links to the police department. His allies include Iwata (Umemiya Tetsuo), a bellicose underworld torpedo with whom the detective bonds over bruises, booze, and Yankee hookers, and Lady Snowblood herself, Kaji Meiko,...

Movie of the Week #30: Jc Cansdale-Cook Picks Graveyard of Honour (1975) by Kinji Fukasaku
Tetsuya Watari in Tôkyô nagaremono (1966)
Emerging from the rubble of two war-ending weapons of mass destruction as well as its own barbarism, Japan was reduced to its knees. With a cascade of constitutional changes at the hands of their occupiers, as well as the liberation of so-called “Sangokujin” whom Japan had spent the century systematically oppressing and obliterating, the people looked on in punishment as their country underwent rapid reformation once again. It is against this backdrop Rikio Ishikawa (a soul-destroyingly evil performance from Tetsuya Watari), the son of a country humiliated beyond defeat, the product of the pillaging of a national identity, violently defies salvation as a modern-day Ryunosuke Tsukue in Kinji Fukasaku’s most abyssal picture of his ferociously graphic career; enter the “Graveyard of Honour”.

Following Ishikawa’s tumultuous descent into oblivion over the span of the Japanese Occupation, “Graveyard of Honour “endeavours to plunder the lowest depths of immorality, deliberately finding...

What You Need To Watch (And Read) Before Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities
Image
Like most hardcore horror fans, Guillermo del Toro loves a good anthology series. From "The Twilight Zone" to "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," which del Toro produced, the notion of getting a completely different tale of terror each week is too tantalizing to resist. So genre fans should be giddily anticipating the October 25, 2022, Netflix premiere of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," which boasts eight episodes of spine-tingling fright from some of the most talented horror directors working today.

In the newly released teaser, del Toro promises, "Each of the episodes has a whole world." Though he is presenting the series, he has given all eight directors free rein to tell their stories on their own creative terms. Perhaps the most exciting element of the series is its focus on the construction of "beautiful, practical creatures." In an industry where CG dominates, it's an absolute joy to hear...

Netflix and Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Blade 2, Hellboy) have teamed up for new anthology series “Cabinet of Curiosities,” a collection of live-action stories that Netflix says “is meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror.”

“From macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy, the eight sinister tales — including two original works by del Toro — will be brought to life by a team of writers and directors personally chosen by the Shape of Water filmmaker.”

Netflix has announced today that the series will debut Tuesday, October 25, launching a special four day, double episode Netflix & Chills Halloween event. Two all-new “Cabinet of Curiosities” tales will debut daily through Friday, October 28, when the entire collection of eight stories will be available to Netflix members around the world.
