ZEE5 Global, a streaming platform which focuses on South Asian content, has grown 35% year-on-year in viewership among its target audience in the U.S., according to data released by the service.

The South Asian diaspora in the U.S. took the most to drama, with the genre accounting for 60% of the viewership on the platform during the first half of 2023. Theatrically released films “Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan,” starring Salman Khan, “Uunchai,” headlined by Amitabh Bachchan and “Salaam Venky,” featuring Aamir Khan and ZEE5 originals “Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai,” starring Manoj Bajpayee, “Tarla,” with Huma Qureshi, “Ayali,” “Taj: Divided by Blood” and “Vyavastha” were heavy hitters for the service.

“Raanjhanaa,” an intense Hindu-Muslim romantic drama, was the Hindi-language debut of Tamil cinema star Dhanush and featured chartbusting music by Oscar-, BAFTA-, Grammy- and Golden Globe-winner A.R. Rahman.

While keeping the plot under wraps, Rai told Variety, “When we were working on the ‘Tere Ishk Mein’ script, we realized that we are catching on to the same aggression. Exclusive: India’s Zee Studios and Roy Kapur Films are collaborating on an action thriller featuring Shahid Kapoor in the lead.

The as-yet-untitled film will be directed by Rosshan Andrrews, known for Malayalam blockbusters such as Salute and Kayamkulam Kochunni, making his first foray into Hindi-language film. The project also marks the first time that Zee Studios and Roy Kapur Films have worked together.

Scheduled to start shooting in the second half of 2023, the film revolves around a brilliant yet rebellious police officer who uncovers a web of deceit and betrayal while investigating a high-profile case.

Anshu said: “It is expensive to live in a city like Mumbai and that, too, when you are struggling. When I shifted to Mumbai, I didn’t have any source of income because I didn’t have a job. The actor took to his Twitter and shared the picture on his feed with the comment: “This pic is fascinating! The first-ever batch of women cadets undergoing training at the National Defence Academy Khadakwasla. More power to you, girls! God bless.”

NDA, the world’s first tri-service academy located in Khadakwasla, Pune, is where cadets aiming to be officers of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force train together. After completing their training, the cadets progress to their respective service academies for further pre-commission training.

Admitted in June this year, the first batch of women cadets at the NDA has a strength of 19. This batch, which is part of the 148th course, is set to graduate in May 2025.

Ayan Mukerji’s Bollywood action fantasy “Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva” was one of the leading films at the global box office over the weekend, grossing 28.2 million, according to its producers, Disney’s Star Studios India and Dharma Productions.

The film released in India across 5,019 screens and debuted at No. 1 with a three-day weekend of 18.9 million. The film’s overseas screen count was 3,894.

In the U.S., where the film is distributed by Disney, it released in 810 theaters and debuted at No. 2 with 4.4 million.

However, the film needs to sustain its momentum to break even, with its budget approximately 51 million.

People now just refuse to come to the cinemas. This changed attitude was demonstrated recently when few people turned up to watch either Akshay Kumar’s ‘Raksha Bandhan’ or Aamir Khan’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’. A week later, the same reluctance was evident for the comparatively smaller film, ‘Do Baaraa’.

‘Raksha Bandhan’ and ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ were both released in the same week to cash in on the extended holiday period starting with the festival of Raksha Bandhan on August 11, leading up to Independence Day, and ending with the Parsi New Year on August 16. When two high-profile films have been released in the same week at other times, often both have proved to be successful and there was no reason why these two should not have taken advantage of this long weekend and reap the benefit. In the wake of mixed reviews on its release day, the makers of ‘Liger’ announced on Friday that the movie has grossed Rs 33.12 crore worldwide on Day One in all the languages.

That may be bigger than the opening-day collection of ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, Bollywood’s biggest mainstream hit this year, which gained traction as the days went by. Trade news sites, however, are being cautious with their figures.

Bollymoviereviewz.com reports that worldwide, ‘Liger’ has grossed Rs 28.1 crore, including Rs 3.63 crore from America, and of this, the all-India share is Rs 19 crore.

That, again, is more than what ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, ‘Shamshera’, ‘Raksha Bandhan’ and ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ each made on their first day, but it is clear from all available figures that ‘Liger’ has done well only in the two Telugu-speaking states.

Despite the star wattage of A-listers Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar, the underwhelming box office performance of “Forrest Gump” adaptation “Laal Singh Chaddha” and “Raksha Bandhan,” respectively, have set the alarm bells ringing in Bollywood.

Both films released on Aug. 11. The date was tailor-made for “Raksha Bandhan,” a film about brother-sister relationships, as it coincided with the festival of Raksha Bandhan, which celebrates siblinghood. Headlined by Kumar, one of India’s most bankable stars, the film, which was made on a budget of approximately 9 million, has collected some 6 million in a week of release, according to industry estimates.

The numbers are starker for “Laal Singh Chaddha.” Khan headlined three of India’s all-time box office champions, including No. 1 “Dangal” (311 million); No. 6 “Secret Superstar” (154 million), by “Laal Singh Chaddha” director Advait Chandan; and No. 7 “Pk” (140 million). With a loaded release calendar, starting with the VFX-heavy ‘Brahmastra’ and going up to Shah Rukh Khan’s much-anticipated ‘Jawan’ and the Salman Khan-starrer ‘Tiger 3’, riding on its broke back, Bollywood is facing the double whammy of its established stars all seeming to be well past their sell-by date and its scriptwriters appearing to be completely out of touch with the paradigm shift in consumer preferences.

After disaster struck the two Independence Day long weekend releases — Aamir Khan’s long-awaited, mega-hyped ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Raksha Bandhan’ — a wag commented that Bollywood has become like the Congress: it has only its past to live on and stares at a dim future, unless a miracle happens.

For Aamir, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ has been his worst commercially since his 2000 film ‘Mela’, despite getting a five-day holiday weekend, starting with Raksha Bandhan on August 11 and ending with Independence Day. And it has been his second successive flop after the ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, which bombed despite the additional presence of Amitabh Bachchan.

‘Love In Ukraine’ filmmaker Nitin Kumar Gupta talks about his latest music video ‘Rakshabandhan’ which depicts the story of a brother and sister who were separated during childhood days.

He has composed, directed and also acted in the music video. The song has been written by Shadab Akhtar and sung by Rani Indrani Sharma.

Nitin talks about the song filmed aboard a luxury cruise ship: “It was during a recce trip for my upcoming action film ‘Cruise’ that the idea of this music video struck me. It is my first ever non-film music video. Lyricist Shadab Akhtar came up with some very touching lines which inspired me to compose the song in a completely traditional style and instrumentation.”

“Rani Indrani Sharma sang it with a beautiful understanding that made the emotions of every line stand out. French-Algerian model Abir Benchaa and the child actor Kristine were a delight to work with.

The nearly moribund Bollywood family drama genre is set for a revival with “Raksha Bandhan,” directed by Aanand. L. Rai (“Atrangi Re”) and starring Akshay Kumar (“Sooryavanshi”) and Bhumi Pednekar (“Badhaai Do”).

Films revolving around the family unit, which used to be a staple in Bollywood, peaked with blockbuster “Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!” (1994), starring Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit, and made a brief reappearance with “Badhaai Ho” (2018) featuring Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao and Ayushmann Khurrana. “Raksha Bandhan” hopes to emulate the heydays of the genre.

Days after the Najafi group’s buyout of STX Entertainment, the Eros STX Global Corporation is changing its name to Eros Media World Plc. The newly renamed company has also revealed a new management structure and some financial projections.

Eros will retain a 15 non-voting stake in STX and the company said it has “fully repaid 152 million of outstanding Jp Morgan credit facility and subordinated credit facilities at STX level.”
