Ted Sarandos: The ‘Bigger Opportunity’ with AI in Filmmaking Is ‘If You Can Make Movies 10% Better,’ Not Just Cheaper
Image
Artificial or not, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos has some ideas on how artificial intelligence could make films “better.” During the company’s first-quarter earnings call on Thursday, Sarandos said that he believes that the real opportunity for AI in filmmaking is if they can help films be “10 percent better,” not just “50 percent cheaper.” Sarandos cited James Cameron’s recent comments about how the technology could cut production costs in half.

“There’s a ton of excitement about what AI can do for content creators,” Sarandos said on the call. “I read the article too about what Jim Cameron said about making movies 50 percent cheaper. I remain convinced that there’s an even bigger opportunity if you can make movies 10 percent better. So, our talent today is using AI tools to do set references, pre-vis, VFX sequence prep, shot planning, all kinds of things today that kind of make the process better.

Melania Trump’s Hat Steals The Show At Husband’s Second Inauguration
Image
Melania Trump opted for a timeless patriotic look at husband Donald Trump‘s presidential inauguration on Monday, wearing a custom double-breasted navy coat by American designer Adam Lippes and a matching boater hat by Eric Javits.

The ensemble reflected a classic and sophisticated style, with Lippes expressing his pride in dressing the First Lady for the historic event.

“The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honor to dress our first lady, Mrs. Melania Trump,” Lippes said in a statement. “Mrs. Trump’s outfit was created by some of America’s finest craftsmen and I take great pride in showing such work to the world.”

Melania completed her look with black leather gloves and dark blue suede pumps, complementing President Trump’s navy coat. Ivanka Trump also made an appearance at the morning’s church service, donning a forest green skirt suit and a coordinating hat.

‘Jeopardy!’ Boss Reveals Colin Jost’s Most ‘Impressive’ Skill & Big Challenge as ‘Pop Culture’ Host
Image
Jeopardy! fans who are clueless about Shakespeare and First Ladies are patiently awaiting Pop Culture Jeopardy!. Ahead of its December 4, 2024 premiere, longtime franchise producer Sarah Whitcomb Foss has shed some light on how Colin Jost is as the host. “Over the weekend, SNL premiered its 50th season,” Foss shared on the latest installment of the Inside Jeopardy! podcast. “I tuned in to Weekend Update with a whole new point of view having worked with Jost taping those 40 episodes of Pop Culture Jeopardy!, and really I’m a fan.” The former Clue Crew member gushed over Jost having worked with him first-hand on the Amazon Prime Video series — the first-ever version of Jeopardy! to be exclusively on streaming (not cable). “He is a joy,” Foss continued. “He took it very seriously. He was really making sure that not only did he know the material and how to deliver it but that...

‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Call Out Inconsistency Game Rules
Image
Jeopardy! fans have been getting tired of the show’s inconsistent rules lately. Over the last two weeks, the judges have reversed decisions based on mispronouncing words in some cases. In others, the judges allow the mispronunciations to stand. Now, it appears the show has made inconsistent decisions on how names are said.

Here is the latest Jeopardy! controversy and what fans had to say about it.

Jeopardy! Has Inconsistent Rule On Names

Jeopardy! has frustrated fans this year with some very inconsistent rules, where some contestants get breaks and others don’t. This mostly happens when someone mispronounces a word.

Isaac Hirsch playing Jeopardy! | YouTube

Earlier in the year, someone said “Salt and Pepper” when it should have been “Salt ‘n’ Pepa” and got it right. Another person said “Bridalveil Falls” and missed it because it was “Bridalveil Fall.” There was also a game where someone said “char-grilled” and...

‘Jeopardy!’ Fan Blasts ‘Awfully Inconsistent’ First Name Ruling
Image
Is Jeopardy! pulling a fast one with some unstated new answer expectations? Some fans seem to think so after Friday’s (July 12) episode. The episode saw Isaac Hirsch face a new set of competitors — chemistry professor Mike Ferguson and attorney Ashley Weaver — and notch his eighth consecutive victory with $34,001 added to his winnings for an 8-day total of $195,389. A point of controversy arose during the episode’s Double Jeopardy round regarding the “First Ladies” category. In response to Weaver being deemed wrong for not including Ida McKinley’s first name in an answer, one fan wrote on Reddit, “Ok, so apparently now they’re requiring first names for First Ladies?” The commenter then referenced a previous complaint about the same issue, which included pointing out several instances where the same category did not require the use of the first name, including a game in 2022 and another in 2018. In the latter,...

Discovery+ Launches CNN Originals Hub
Image
The CNN Originals hub debuted on Discovery+ on Friday, as the new home for the news channel’s streaming library following the abrupt closure of CNN+.

The hub was announced earlier this month, and features over 800 episodes of content from CNN Original Series, CNN Films, and Hln Original Series. Additional content will be added after their linear run on the CNN cable networks.

Some of the original content that appeared on CNN+ has popped up elsewhere. The documentary The Last Movie Stars, about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, debuted this summer on HBO Max. Chris Wallace’s talk show, one of the marquee offerings, will return in September on CNN on Sunday nights and on HBO Max.

Among the original library titles offered on the new hub are 1968: The Year That Changed America, American Dynasties: The Kennedys, American Style, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (Seasons 1-12), The Bush Years: Family, Duty, Power,...

CNN Originals Hub Launches on Discovery+ with Over 800 TV Episodes
Image
Starting today, Discovery+ subscribers will have access to many of CNN’s most popular evergreen television series, including popular food shows “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” and “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” and documentaries like “The History of Comedy” and “Diana.” The series can be found under a new CNN Originals hub on Discovery+, the latest addition to the popular documentary-heavy streaming service.

Since WarnerMedia and Discovery merged to become Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this year, CEO David Zaslav has made the consolidation of the conglomerate’s streaming services a top priority. One of his first moves was to scrap CNN+, a streaming service that the company had invested over 100 million into, just a month after it launched. CNN+ primarily focused on content made by CNN personalities that was not strictly news-related. While the service failed to find a significant subscriber base, much of the content produced for it is now...

The First Lady Canceled at Showtime
Gillian Anderson, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Viola Davis in The First Lady (2022)
The First Lady is one and done at Showtime.

The premium cabler has canceled the Viola Davis, Gillian Anderson, and Michelle Pfeiffer anthology after one season, according to Deadline.

“Showtime can confirm that the anthology series The First Lady will not be moving forward with another season,” a network spokesperson said in a statement.

“We would like to applaud the artistry and commitment of our showrunner Cathy Schulman, director Susanne Bier, their fellow executive producers, our amazing cast, led by executive producer Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson, and our studio partner Lionsgate for their dedicated work in telling the unique stories of three remarkable leaders.”

News of the cancellation is somewhat surprising.

While the show premiered to a tepid response from critics and viewers, it was thought that a renewal with a new story and cast would have been a slam dunk.

Portraying ‘The First Lady’ is a sure-fire way to win an Emmy
Image
One year after winning an Emmy for portraying U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on “The Crown,” Gillian Anderson could pick up a bookend for her role as another famous woman: Eleanor Roosevelt on “The First Lady.” Compared to her competitors, Anderson has an advantage: portraying Roosevelt has already brought four women recognition from the TV academy.

Since 1976, portrayals of 11 U.S. presidential spouses have led to 24 Emmy bids, six of which resulted in wins. Take a scroll through our photo gallery of past First Ladies Emmy winners and nominees, presented in order from most to least recent.

Showtime’s “The First Lady” also showcases Michelle Pfeiffer and Viola Davis as presidential spouses Betty Ford and Michelle Obama respectively. Alongside Anderson, both of these actresses are also vying for spots in the limited series lineup. This would be the first Emmy bid for a portrayal of Obama and the second for that of Ford.

‘The First Lady’ Review: Michelle Pfeiffer Is Mvp of Showtime’s Clunky Presidential Anthology
Image
On the surface, a show like Showtime’s “The First Lady” has potential. As we’ve heard time and again behind every great man is a great woman, so why not tell that story through the most powerful men in America? But it requires a sense of delicacy.

Every president has had their successes and failures, but it’s far too easy to cast these women as just moral arbiters of the creator’s own perception of said president’s accomplishments or misjudgments. Director Susanne Bier’s anthology falls into this category.

The series blends the stories of three First Ladies: Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis). Each woman navigates issues, both personal and professional, as they enter into the ill-defined job that comes of being married to a man voted president.

It’s that question that is at the heart, and lays unanswered,...

‘The First Lady’: Composer Geoff Zanelli to Score Upcoming White House Drama Series (Exclusive)

Emmy-award winning composer Geoff Zanelli is slated to compose the music for “The First Lady,” premiering on Showtime. The new hour-long anthology drama follows the lives of three of America’s First Ladies and stars Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford and Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt.

Zanelli served as composer of films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Christopher Robin,” and he won an Emmy award for his work in the Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks miniseries “Into the West.” He also was nominated for HBO’s “The Pacific,” another Spielberg collaboration.

“I’ve had the honor of writing music for ‘The Pacific’ and ‘Into The West,’ both shows about distinct times in America’s history, but nothing as intimate as ‘The First Lady,'” Zanelli said. “We’re so up close and personal in this show.

‘The First Lady’ EPs Talk Potential Future Installments On Jackie Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, & Melania Trump
Image
The executive producers of the upcoming Showtime anthology series The First Lady are already thinking about what historical women to focus on in Season 2. Its debut season, centering Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis), premieres on April 17.

Cathy Schulman and Susanne Bier teased during the show’s TCA presentation on Wednesday that viewers could see appearances from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Hillary Clinton, Hillary Melania Trump, Dolly Madison, Edith Wilson, Martha Washington, and Rosalynn Carter in future installments.

“I would be very intrigued to depict Hillary Clinton because I think that her position was so complicated… I think that would be incredibly interesting,” said Bier.

Schulman added, “If we could figure out a way to do Jackie Kennedy that didn’t tell the same old story again—particularly the latter part of her life— I’m fascinated by that.”

When asked whether or not they’d consider Melania Trump,...

Being the First Lady is never the second hardest job.

Showtime’s anthology drama series “The First Lady” captures the legacy of three former FLOTUSes: Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis).

“The First Lady has to be a special kind of woman,” Pfeiffer as Ford explains in the trailer, while Davis’ Obama pushes back against being branded as the “Black Martha Stewart.”

“The First Lady” premieres Sunday, April 17, with a special Presidents’ Day weekend installation featuring out-of-home advertising and digital projections, near federal landmarks in highly trafficked travel locations, including New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Programmers were once challenged to figure out which night and time slot would be best to turn a new show into a big hit. Today, execs stare at grids of multiple platform options and strategize how quickly, or not, to give a show a second (or third) window on a sibling channel.
