Kristen Kish on Finding Her Confidence Hosting ‘Top Chef,’ Her Least Favorite Food and Agreeing to Do ‘The Traitors’: ‘It Was a Business Decision’
Image
“Top Chef” host and chef Kristen Kish has eaten her fair share of culinary delights, but there’s one dish she’s not a fan of: smoked salmon.

“You could probably pay me, because if I’m on ‘Top Chef ’ and if someone serves this to me, I’m going to eat it,” she laughs. “But outside of my job, smoked salmon, especially the ones you buy in the grocery stores that are in the packages, and you open it and it’s so oddly slimy and like wet with salmon fat? I don’t know that smoked salmon’s ever been my thing.”

The disdain stems from her days as an apprentice cook when she “had to make a lot of smoked salmon mousse for canapés.”

Kish is now in her second year hosting the Emmy-nominated reality competition show, and she has settled in and found her groove. “In the first season,...

Reality Rematch: Alan or RuPaul? Emmy voters have a whole host of choices
Image
The two most recent winners for Best Reality Host are facing off for the second consecutive year: Alan Cumming (The Traitors), who triumphed in 2024, and RuPaul Charles (RuPaul's Drag Race), who holds the record with eight victories between 2016 and 2023. While Cumming claimed a second trophy last year when The Traitors won Best Competition Program, he has a long road ahead to match RuPaul's staggering career total of 14 Emmys — the most ever for a person of color.

The Best Reality Host category has favored repeat winners since its creation in 2008, with Jeff Probst (Survivor), Jane Lynch (Hollywood Game Night), and RuPaul all stepping up to the podium more than once.

‘I was petrified to be me’: Kristen Kish on her road from ‘Top Chef’ winner to Emmy-nominated host
Image
Stepping into Padma Lakshmi’s high heels as the host of Top Chef after 20 seasons couldn’t have been more daunting. But Kristen Kish had already proven her competitive spirit — fearlessly cooking her way back into the competition after being bounced in the “Restaurant Wars” episode, and going on to be crowned the Season 10 champion.

“I certainly could have never imagined holding this position,” she said of hosting Top Chef during a recent Q&a at the Television Academy’s Televerse Festival, celebrating her second Emmy nomination as host and the show’s 19th nomination for reality competition program overall. “The second you step on to Top Chef, even if you're the first one eliminated, the fact that you just had that experience, it is unlike anything you will ever do. There aren't words to explain what it feels like to go through that process. I mean, my life completely...

‘It’s chaos — a reflection of America right now’: Alan Cumming on ‘The Traitors,’ Emmys success, and ‘Doomsday’ secrets
Image
Alan Cumming is savoring his return to Emmy glory. Peacock’s The Traitors is nominated for five awards this year, including Best Reality Competition Program and Best Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program — both categories it won last year.

“Life is sweet. What can I say?” Cumming says when asked about the recognition. “I feel like whatever happens, I’ve still won Emmys. But if we win, of course it’s like, how lovely, we’ve won again. And also, I feel like we’re in a great stride with the show and we feel really good about it. So it’s a really great time actually.”

Friendly rivalries and reality shows he won't do

One of his competitors for Best Host this year is Top Chef’s Kristen Kish, who also appears in the upcoming fourth season of The Traitors. “She is indeed [on the show],” Cumming confirms. “It’s sort of funny.

Inside Track: How campaigns are embracing live events ahead of final Emmy voting
Image
The final weeks of summer are traditionally a time for rest and relaxation before the fall sprint to the Halloween-to-Christmas holiday corridor beings. But Emmy nominees and their awards teams have to spend the end of August on a rinse-and-repeat cycle of events and panels before they get to take advantage of the other kind of R&r. With the final voting period kicking off on Monday, a flurry of last-minute FYC gatherings are taking place on both coasts as contenders try to stay top of mind before voters take their proverbial pencils to their ballots.

As Inside Track has previously noted, the newest kid on the FYC block is Televerse, the first authorized event organized and hosted by the TV Academy. The lights went up on the three-day affair — held at the Jw Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live — on Aug. 14 with star-studded panels and screenings for Top Chef,...

Image
Exclusive: Kevin Hart is teaming with Netflix for a new competition series to crown the next big name in stand-up.

Guided by Hart and a crew of comedy titans, to be announced at a later date, the currently untitled eight-episode series is billed as an unfiltered, uncensored and unapologetic competition that will pull back the curtain on the gritty, hilarious and often unpredictable path of a stand-up career.

The competition will give viewers an unvarnished look behind the curtain of comedy’s darkest corners and brightest spotlights with the challenges inspired by comics’ actual career trajectories.

Hartbeat and Alfred Street Industries will produce the show, which is set to debut in 2026. Hart will exec produce alongside Jane Lipsitz,...

Peacock's TV show library offers much more than NBC reruns
Image
It might not have the flashiest originals, but Peacock delivers comfort, consistency, and 80,000 hours of bingeable TV.

When I think of Peacock TV shows, I think NBC comedies. My brain goes to classics like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.” But I think that’s a product of what I like to watch because there’s a lot more to be found on Peacock if you dig a little deeper. I’m not a reality TV guy, but my wife is, and Peacock is quietly stacked with reality shows, true-crime series, along with some really great originals (looking at you “Poker Face”) that have helped carve out its brand a little more clearly.

Peacock doesn’t lock itself into one lane — it’s got a little of everything, even if its identity feels a bit more like NBCUniversal’s greatest hits than a curated vibe like Apple TV+ or Max. Still,...

The Emmys Love Was Expected, Babe — but ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Is Still a Modern TV Miracle
Image
When IndieWire sat down with “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winner Onya Nurve and first runner-up Jewels Sparkles after that dazzling Season 17 finale this spring, we held our interview until after the 2025 Emmy nominees got announced. We were confident the five-time Outstanding Reality Competition winner would have another chance at more Emmys, and we were right! So, we’re running the conversation now.

But just because anyone who follows the unscripted category — which also includes “Survivor,” “The Traitors,” “The Amazing Race,” and “Top Chef” — had the MTV show’s nomination on their radar, that doesn’t mean the ongoing success of “Drag Race” isn’t real news. Since 2009, the legendary variety competition show hosted by RuPaul has put the formerly fringe art of drag on pop culture’s main stage. Audiences have spent not just hours and weeks but years asking, “Who will be America’s next drag super star?” And, for a select contingent,...

Colombian Studios Tis, Rcn and Caracol Open Doors Ever Wider for International Business
Image
Colombia’s three major studios, Tis Studios, Rcn and Caracol, have opened their doors ever wider to the growing influx of international projects, lured by the country’s generous incentives.

Since about five years ago, Rcn transitioned from being “a TV network with studios to a studio with a network,” said Alex Marín, VP of Distribution, who took up his post at Rcn after 20 years at Sony Pictures Entertainment. “Our three-pillar approach is 1. To produce for our channel, 2. Produce content with partners or for partners and 3. provide production services,” he pointed out.

Established some 30 years ago, all three companies boast a depth of experience, sprawling facilities and multiple sound stages, with Rcn claiming the largest in Latin America.

Tis Studios (formerly FoxTelecolombia) boasts a standing jail set, the only one of its kind in Colombia where “Sound of Freedom” and “Perfil Falso” shot some scenes, while Rcn has housed various cooking reality shows for years,...

“I’m authentic”: Survivor’s Jeff Probst Has One Solid Reason Why Survivor Deserves to Win Emmys 2025
Image
Even after 48-plus seasons, over 700 episodes, and endless fire-making battles, Survivor still hasn’t taken home an Emmy for best competition series. That might sound absurd for a show that practically invented the modern reality genre. But Jeff Probst, the long-time host and executive producer, isn’t bitter.

He just thinks the show is overdue and has one clean reason why it deserves the trophy this time: it’s real. Probst said in a September 2023 GQ interview:

I don’t need anyone to write for me. I just watch and react in real time. You might not like the way I talk or how I comment during a challenge. But I hope that when you watch me, you do believe that I’m authentic, because it is me.

In an era of overproduced reality TV and scripted moments, Survivor still runs on the simple fuel of people and pressure. This...

As irony would have it, Kish is set to compete on the fourth season of Cumming's show, set to air early next year.

wThis Reality Show Just Made A Major Emmy Comeback - Ending 13-Year Nomination Streak
Image
Fan-favorite reality TV show, Survivor has been nominated for the Emmy Awards again after being shockingly snubbed last year. The Outstanding Reality Competition Program category debuted in 2003, with The Amazing Race dominating the early years. Iconic series like Dancing with the Stars, Top Chef, and RuPaul’s Drag Race followed, earning multiple nominations and wins and showing that reality TV is now taken more seriously.

Survivor, the genre pioneer, has stood the test of time with 69 Emmy nominations and seven wins, largely in technical and hosting categories. Though it went unrecognized in the main competition category from 2006 to 2023, its 2023 nomination marked a triumphant return to prominence after 17 years. However, in 2024, Survivor was left off the Emmy ballot entirely, receiving no nomination.

Survivor has bagged an Emmy nomination in 2025, replacing a show that seemingly took its place last year.

EW has released the full list of 2025 nominations for the 77th Annual Emmy Awards.

It marks a step change for the unscripted world with Peacock’s The Traitors also competing again after winning last year.

The other nominees in the category are RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Amazing Race and Top Chef.

‘Traitors,’ ‘Daily Show’ Among 2025 Emmy Nominees Announced Early
Image
Alan Cumming and Jon Stewart are once again Emmy nominees.

As are “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” “Survivor” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

On Tuesday, at the totally reasonable hour of 7:47 a.m. Et/4:47 a.m. Pt, which is just shy of four hours before Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song officially announce the nominees for the 77th Emmy Awards, “CBS Mornings” revealed two categories: Outstanding Reality Competition Program and Outstanding Talk Series.

There were few surprises in either. Last year’s winners in those categories, “The Traitors” and “The Daily Show,” were shoo-ins; “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” was also expected to make the cut again in talk series. The only question mark was which show would take the third spot. It turned out to be “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

In addition to “The Traitors” and five-time winner “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” reality competition made space for “The Amazing Race,...

Emmy Nominations 2025: ‘Severance’ Leads All Shows With 27 Nods, ‘The Penguin,’ ‘The Studio’ and ‘White Lotus’ Close Behind
Image
Emmy voters sure know how to take a bite of the Apple. As the Television Academy unveiled nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards on Tuesday, Apple TV+’s hits “Severance” and “The Studio” led the tallies for both drama and comedy series, respectively.

HBO Max, meanwhile, led the overall network tally at 142 — thanks to shows including “The Penguin” (the most in limited/anthology), “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us” and “Hacks.” That’s up from the outlet’s previous best, 140 in 2022.

But “Severance,” which scored 27 noms, and “The Studio,” which landed 23 noms, were undeniable. In particular, “The Studio” has now earned the most comedy nominations in a single year, ever — tying Season 3 of “The Bear,” which earned 23 nods in 2024.

HBO Max’s massive tally puts it back on top, a place where it has spent the majority of the last two decades. In more recent years, it has battled...
